Dark-field Search for Quantum Vacuum Signals in the Low-Energy Regime

Abstract

We report on the experimental details of a dark-field search for light-by-light scattering signals performed at the High Energy Density (HED) instrument of the European XFEL (EuXFEL) in a pump-probe type experiment colliding the EuXFEL beam with the 300-TW-class near-infrared Relativistic Laser at XFEL (ReLaX) at a center-of-mass photon energy of $ω_\star = 116\,\mathrm{eV}$. Especially in combination with polarization filtering, the dark-field concept allows the signal-to-background ratio to be significantly enhanced and both polarization channels to be recorded. This work elaborates on the experimental setup and the diagnostics used, from the per-shot spatiotemporal-overlap diagnostics, via the polarizing beam splitter, to the characterization of the residual background. Moreover, it provides details on the start-to-end simulations of the setup used for analysis. Accumulating 2751 pump-probe collisions, no excess above background is observed, and an upper limit on the light-by-light scattering cross section of $7\times10^{4}$ times the QED prediction at a 95% confidence level is derived. This is the most stringent bound on low-energy light-by-light scattering achieved to date, representing an improvement by ten orders of magnitude upon previous experimental limits.

First measurement of the masses of the $Υ_1(1D)$ and $Υ_3(1D)$ states and the energy dependence of the cross sections for $e^+e^-\toΥ_J(1D)η$ and $e^+e^-\toΥ_J(1D)π^+π^-$

We study the processes $e^+e^-\toΥ_J(1D)η$ and $e^+e^-\toΥ_J(1D)π^+π^-$ at center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}$=(10.73 -- 11.02) GeV using a $142.5\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ data sample, including 122~fb$^{-1}$ near the $Υ$(10860) peak ($\sqrt{s}$ = 10.866 GeV), collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. From the peak sample, the products of Born cross section times branching fraction are obtained for $σ_{\rm Born}(e^+e^-\toΥ_J(1D)η)$ or $σ_{\rm Born}(e^+e^-\toΥ_J(1D)π^+π^-)$ and ${\cal B}(Υ_J(1D)\toχ_{b1}γ)$ or ${\cal B}(Υ_J(1D)\toχ_{b2}γ)$ for each $Υ_J(1D)$ state. The corresponding branching fractions for $Υ(10860)$ decays are also obtained. The significances of the $Υ_1(1D)$, $Υ_2(1D)$, and $Υ_3(1D)$ signals are 4.8$σ$, ${>}10σ$, and 3.0$σ$, respectively, including systematic uncertainties. The mass for $Υ_2(1D)$ is measured to be $(10167.0\pm 1.0\pm 0.2)$ MeV/$c^2$, where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic. The mass splittings $Δm_{12}=m(Υ_2(1D))-m(Υ_1(1D))$ and $Δm_{23}=m(Υ_3(1D))-m(Υ_2(1D))$ are $(11.8\pm1.5\pm0.4)$ MeV/$c^2$ and $(7.6\pm2.4\pm0.6)$ MeV/$c^2$, respectively.~We determine the energy dependence of the cross sections for $e^+e^-\toΥ_J(1D)η$ and $e^+e^-\toΥ_J(1D)π^+π^-$ for the $Υ_1(1D)$, $Υ_2(1D)$, and $Υ_3(1D)$ states, combined.

Dark sector searches at BESIII

Large samples of charmonia, charm mesons, hyperons and light mesons collected by BESIII offer sensitive tests of dark sector interactions with charm and light quarks. This contribution reviews recent searches for sub-GeV dark matter in $η\toπ^0+\mathrm{invisible}$ and $J/ψ\toϕ+\mathrm{invisible}$, massless dark photons in $D^0\toωγ'$ and $D^0\toγγ'$, invisible $K^0_S$ decays, dark baryons in $Ξ^-\toπ^-χ$, and light vector bosons in $χ_{cJ}\to J/ψV$, $V\to e^+e^-$. Particular attention is given to the $η$ search, which constrains scalar-mediated dark matter and tests thermal relic benchmarks.

First search for sidereal and annual modulation of $Z$-pole asymmetries with the recovered SLD data set

We report what is, to our knowledge, the first time-resolved analysis of electroweak asymmetries at the $Z$ pole, using the public release of the recovered SLD collision data: $6.6\times10^5$ polarized $e^+e^-\to Z$ events from the 1996-1998 SLC runs, with 385583 selected hadronic $Z$ decays spanning 782 sidereal cycles. The left-right asymmetry $A_{LR}$, reconstructed with the published SLD selection and per-event signed Compton polarization, shows no sidereal, solar-diurnal, or annual modulation; a simultaneous unbinned likelihood fit bounds the sidereal first-harmonic amplitude at 0.0086 (95% C.L., statistical). The analysis, frozen on the initial partial release, applied unchanged to the 229833 events of the later-released 1998 run confirms the null (amplitude 0.0018, p=0.90). Using the as-built SLC beam azimuth from the release's documentation corpus, we bound the asymmetry's anisotropy tensor in the Sun-centered frame: $ρ_1\le0.060$, $ρ_2\le0.18$, and, for vector backgrounds, $ρ_0\le0.092$ (95% C.L.). A leading-order matching maps these onto minimal Standard-Model-Extension coefficients as $10^{-2}$-level sensitivities to the two-time-index block of the electroweak gauge-sector coefficient $k_W$ (components with no existing laboratory constraint) and to the Higgs-sector coefficient $k_{ϕϕ}$; the insertions split the $Z$ pole by polarization, so for the tensor families assessed the resonance saturates the sidereal amplitude near $10^{-2}$ and the Born-model bounds exclude finite coefficient bands rather than set an upper limit. We also derive a previously unpublished $Z$-pole birefringence channel in the helicity-odd azimuthal modulation of the thrust axis, with response enhanced by about $2M_Z/Γ_Z$; a Born-level pilot is null. First sidereal analyses of hadronization and leptonic asymmetries bound instrumental drifts at the $10^{-4}$-$10^{-3}$ fractional level.
