Stacked Intelligent Metasurface-Aided MIMO Transceiver Design

Next-generation wireless networks are expected to utilize the limited radio frequency (RF) resources more efficiently with the aid of intelligent transceivers. To this end, we propose a promising transceiver architecture relying on stacked intelligent metasurfaces (SIM). An SIM is constructed by stacking an array of programmable metasurface layers, where each layer consists of a massive number of low-cost passive meta-atoms that individually manipulate the electromagnetic (EM) waves. By appropriately configuring the passive meta-atoms, an SIM is capable of accomplishing advanced computation and signal processing tasks, such as multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) precoding/combining, multi-user interference mitigation, and radar sensing, as the EM wave propagates through the multiple layers of the metasurface, which effectively reduces both the RF-related energy consumption and processing delay. Inspired by this, we provide an overview of the SIM-aided MIMO transceiver design, which encompasses its hardware architecture and its potential benefits over state-of-the-art solutions. Furthermore, we discuss promising application scenarios and identify the open research challenges associated with the design of advanced SIM architectures for next-generation wireless networks. Finally, numerical results are provided for quantifying the benefits of wave-based signal processing in wireless systems.

One-2-3-45++: Fast Single Image to 3D Objects with Consistent Multi-View Generation and 3D Diffusion

Recent advancements in open-world 3D object generation have been remarkable, with image-to-3D methods offering superior fine-grained control over their text-to-3D counterparts. However, most existing models fall short in simultaneously providing rapid generation speeds and high fidelity to input images - two features essential for practical applications. In this paper, we present One-2-3-45++, an innovative method that transforms a single image into a detailed 3D textured mesh in approximately one minute. Our approach aims to fully harness the extensive knowledge embedded in 2D diffusion models and priors from valuable yet limited 3D data. This is achieved by initially finetuning a 2D diffusion model for consistent multi-view image generation, followed by elevating these images to 3D with the aid of multi-view conditioned 3D native diffusion models. Extensive experimental evaluations demonstrate that our method can produce high-quality, diverse 3D assets that closely mirror the original input image. Collaborative Planning for Catching and Transporting Objects in Unstructured Environments

Multi-robot teams have attracted attention from industry and academia for their ability to perform collaborative tasks in unstructured environments, such as wilderness rescue and collaborative transportation. In this paper, we propose a trajectory planning method for a non-holonomic robotic team with collaboration in unstructured environments. For the adaptive state collaboration of a robot team to catch and transport targets to be rescued using a net, we model the process of catching the falling target with a net in a continuous and differentiable form. This enables the robot team to fully exploit the kinematic potential, thereby adaptively catching the target in an appropriate state.Furthermore, the size safety and topological safety of the net, resulting from the collaborative support of the robots, are guaranteed through geometric constraints. We integrate our algorithm on a car-like robot team and test it in simulations and real-world experiments to validate our performance. Our method is compared to state-of-the-art multi-vehicle trajectory planning methods, demonstrating significant performance in efficiency and trajectory quality.

Training A Multi-stage Deep Classifier with Feedback Signals

Multi-Stage Classifier (MSC) - several classifiers working sequentially in an arranged order and classification decision is partially made at each step - is widely used in industrial applications for various resource limitation reasons. The classifiers of a multi-stage process are usually Neural Network (NN) models trained independently or in their inference order without considering the signals from the latter stages. Aimed at two-stage binary classification process, the most common type of MSC, we propose a novel training framework, named Feedback Training. The classifiers are trained in an order reverse to their actual working order, and the classifier at the later stage is used to guide the training of initial-stage classifier via a sample weighting method. We experimentally show the efficacy of our proposed approach, and its great superiority under the scenario of few-shot training.

Simultaneous Time Synchronization and Mutual Localization for Multi-robot System

Mutual localization stands as a foundational component within various domains of multi-robot systems. Nevertheless, in relative pose estimation, time synchronization is usually underappreciated and rarely addressed, although it significantly influences estimation accuracy. In this paper, we introduce time synchronization into mutual localization to recover the time offset and relative poses between robots simultaneously. Under a constant velocity assumption in a short time, we fuse time offset estimation with our previous bearing-based mutual localization by a novel error representation. Based on the error model, we formulate a joint optimization problem and utilize semi-definite relaxation (SDR) to furnish a lossless relaxation. By solving the relaxed problem, time synchronization and relative pose estimation can be achieved when time drift between robots is limited. To enhance the application range of time offset estimation, we further propose an iterative method to recover the time offset from coarse to fine. Comparisons between the proposed method and the existing ones through extensive simulation tests present prominent benefits of time synchronization on mutual localization. Moreover, real-world experiments are conducted to show the practicality and robustness.

Optimal Status Updates for Minimizing Age of Correlated Information in IoT Networks with Energy Harvesting Sensors

Many real-time applications of the Internet of Things (IoT) need to deal with correlated information generated by multiple sensors. The design of efficient status update strategies that minimize the Age of Correlated Information (AoCI) is a key factor. In this paper, we consider an IoT network consisting of sensors equipped with the energy harvesting (EH) capability. We optimize the average AoCI at the data fusion center (DFC) by appropriately managing the energy harvested by sensors, whose true battery states are unobservable during the decision-making process. Particularly, we first formulate the dynamic status update procedure as a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP), where the environmental dynamics are unknown to the DFC. In order to address the challenges arising from the causality of energy usage, unknown environmental dynamics, unobservability of sensors'true battery states, and large-scale discrete action space, we devise a deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based dynamic status update algorithm. The algorithm leverages the advantages of the soft actor-critic and long short-term memory techniques. Meanwhile, it incorporates our proposed action decomposition and mapping mechanism. Extensive simulations are conducted to validate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm by comparing it with available DRL algorithms for POMDPs.

Learning with Noisy Labels Using Collaborative Sample Selection and Contrastive Semi-Supervised Learning

Learning with noisy labels (LNL) has been extensively studied, with existing approaches typically following a framework that alternates between clean sample selection and semi-supervised learning (SSL). However, this approach has a limitation: the clean set selected by the Deep Neural Network (DNN) classifier, trained through self-training, inevitably contains noisy samples. This mixture of clean and noisy samples leads to misguidance in DNN training during SSL, resulting in impaired generalization performance due to confirmation bias caused by error accumulation in sample selection. To address this issue, we propose a method called Collaborative Sample Selection (CSS), which leverages the large-scale pre-trained model CLIP. CSS aims to remove the mixed noisy samples from the identified clean set. We achieve this by training a 2-Dimensional Gaussian Mixture Model (2D-GMM) that combines the probabilities from CLIP with the predictions from the DNN classifier. To further enhance the adaptation of CLIP to LNL, we introduce a co-training mechanism with a contrastive loss in semi-supervised learning. This allows us to jointly train the prompt of CLIP and the DNN classifier, resulting in improved feature representation, boosted classification performance of DNNs, and reciprocal benefits to our Collaborative Sample Selection. By incorporating auxiliary information from CLIP and utilizing prompt fine-tuning, we effectively eliminate noisy samples from the clean set and mitigate confirmation bias during training. Experimental results on multiple benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method in comparison with the state-of-the-art approaches.

ColAG: A Collaborative Air-Ground Framework for Perception-Limited UGVs' Navigation

Perception is necessary for autonomous navigation in an unknown area crowded with obstacles. It's challenging for a robot to navigate safely without any sensors that can sense the environment, resulting in a $\textit{blind}$ robot, and becomes more difficult when comes to a group of robots. However, it could be costly to equip all robots with expensive perception or SLAM systems. In this paper, we propose a novel system named $\textbf{ColAG}$, to solve the problem of autonomous navigation for a group of $\textit{blind}$ UGVs by introducing cooperation with one UAV, which is the only robot that has full perception capabilities in the group. The UAV uses SLAM for its odometry and mapping while sharing this information with UGVs via limited relative pose estimation. The UGVs plan their trajectories in the received map and predict possible failures caused by the uncertainty of its wheel odometry and unknown risky areas. The UAV dynamically schedules waypoints to prevent UGVs from collisions, formulated as a Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Windows to optimize the UAV's trajectories and minimize time when UGVs have to wait to guarantee safety. We validate our system through extensive simulation with up to 7 UGVs and real-world experiments with 3 UGVs.

DIDO: Deep Inertial Quadrotor Dynamical Odometry

In this work, we propose an interoceptive-only state estimation system for a quadrotor with deep neural network processing, where the quadrotor dynamics is considered as a perceptive supplement of the inertial kinematics. To improve the precision of multi-sensor fusion, we train cascaded networks on real-world quadrotor flight data to learn IMU kinematic properties, quadrotor dynamic characteristics, and motion states of the quadrotor along with their uncertainty information, respectively. This encoded information empowers us to address the issues of IMU bias stability, quadrotor dynamics, and multi-sensor calibration during sensor fusion. The above multi-source information is fused into a two-stage Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) framework for better estimation. Experiments have demonstrated the advantages of our proposed work over several conventional and learning-based methods.

WanJuan: A Comprehensive Multimodal Dataset for Advancing English and Chinese Large Models

The rise in popularity of ChatGPT and GPT-4 has significantly accelerated the development of large models, leading to the creation of numerous impressive large language models(LLMs) and multimodal large language models (MLLMs). These cutting-edge models owe their remarkable performance to high-quality data. However, the details of the training data used in leading paradigms are often kept confidential. This lack of transparency, coupled with the scarcity of open-source data, impedes further developments within the community. As a response, this paper presents "Wan Juan", a large-scale multimodal dataset composed of both Chinese and English data, collected from a wide range of web sources. The dataset incorporates text, image-text, and video modalities, with a total volume exceeding 2TB. It was utilized in the training of InternLM, a model that demonstrated significant advantages in multi-dimensional evaluations when compared to models of a similar scale. All data can be accessed at https://opendatalab.org.cn/WanJuan1.0.

An Efficient Trajectory Planner for Car-like Robots on Uneven Terrain

Autonomous navigation of ground robots on uneven terrain is being considered in more and more tasks. However, uneven terrain will bring two problems to motion planning: how to assess the traversability of the terrain and how to cope with the dynamics model of the robot associated with the terrain. The trajectories generated by existing methods are often too conservative or cannot be tracked well by the controller since the second problem is not well solved. In this paper, we propose terrain pose mapping to describe the impact of terrain on the robot. With this mapping, we can obtain the SE(3) state of the robot on uneven terrain for a given state in SE(2). Then, based on it, we present a trajectory optimization framework for car-like robots on uneven terrain that can consider both of the above problems. The trajectories generated by our method conform to the dynamics model of the system without being overly conservative and yet able to be tracked well by the controller. We perform simulations and real-world experiments to validate the efficiency and trajectory quality of our algorithm.

CoNi-MPC: Cooperative Non-inertial Frame Based Model Predictive Control

This paper presents a novel solution for UAV control in cooperative multi-robot systems, which can be used in various scenarios such as leader-following, landing on a moving base, or specific relative motion with a target. Unlike classical methods that tackle UAV control in the world frame, we directly control the UAV in the target coordinate frame, without making motion assumptions about the target. In detail, we formulate a non-linear model predictive controller of a UAV, referred to as the agent, within a non-inertial frame (i.e., the target frame). The system requires the relative states (pose and velocity), the angular velocity and the accelerations of the target, which can be obtained by relative localization methods and ubiquitous MEMS IMU sensors, respectively. This framework eliminates dependencies that are vital in classical solutions, such as accurate state estimation for both the agent and target, prior knowledge of the target motion model, and continuous trajectory re-planning for some complex tasks. We have performed extensive simulations to investigate the control performance with varying motion characteristics of the target. Furthermore, we conducted real robot experiments, employing either simulated relative pose estimation from motion capture systems indoors or directly from our previous relative pose estimation devices outdoors, to validate the applicability and feasibility of the proposed approach.

Robust and Efficient Trajectory Planning for Formation Flight in Dense Environments

Formation flight has a vast potential for aerial robot swarms in various applications. However, existing methods lack the capability to achieve fully autonomous large-scale formation flight in dense environments. To bridge the gap, we present a complete formation flight system that effectively integrates real-world constraints into aerial formation navigation. This paper proposes a differentiable graph-based metric to quantify the overall similarity error between formations. This metric is invariant to rotation, translation, and scaling, providing more freedom for formation coordination. We design a distributed trajectory optimization framework that considers formation similarity, obstacle avoidance, and dynamic feasibility. The optimization is decoupled to make large-scale formation flights computationally feasible. To improve the elasticity of formation navigation in highly constrained scenes, we present a swarm reorganization method that adaptively adjusts the formation parameters and task assignments by generating local navigation goals. A novel swarm agreement strategy called global-remap-local-replan and a formation-level path planner is proposed in this work to coordinate the global planning and local trajectory optimizations. To validate the proposed method, we design comprehensive benchmarks and simulations with other cutting-edge works in terms of adaptability, predictability, elasticity, resilience, and efficiency. Finally, integrated with palm-sized swarm platforms with onboard computers and sensors, the proposed method demonstrates its efficiency and robustness by achieving the largest scale formation flight in dense outdoor environments.

Variational Tensor Wavefunctions for the Interacting Quantum Spin Hall Phase

The quantum spin hall (QSH) phase, also known as the 2D topological insulator, is characterized by protected helical edge modes arising from time reversal symmetry. While initially proposed for band insulators, this phase can also manifest in strongly-correlated systems where conventional band theory fails. To overcome the challenge of simulating this phase in realistic correlated models, we propose a novel framework utilizing fermionic tensor network states. Our approach involves constructing a tensor representation of the fixed-point wavefunction based on an exact solvable model, enabling us to derive a set of tensor equations governing the transformation rules of local tensors under symmetry operations. These tensor equations lead to the anomalous edge theory, which provides a comprehensive description of the QSH phase. By solving these tensor equations, we obtain variational ansatz for the QSH phase, which we subsequently verify through numerical calculations. This method serves as an initial step towards employing tensor algorithms to simulate the QSH phase in strongly-correlated systems, opening new avenues for investigating and understanding topological phenomena in complex materials.

Automated Exploration of Reaction Network and Mechanism via Meta-dynamics Nanoreactor

We developed an automated approach to construct the complex reaction network and explore the reaction mechanism for several reactant molecules. The nanoreactor type molecular dynamics was employed to generate possible chemical reactions, in which the meta-dynamics was taken to overcome reaction barriers and the semi-empirical GFN2-xTB method was used to reduce computational cost. The identification of reaction events from trajectories was conducted by using the hidden Markov model based on the evolution of the molecular connectivity. This provided the starting points for the further transition state searches at the more accurate electronic structure levels to obtain the reaction mechanism. Then the whole reaction network with multiply pathways was obtained. The feasibility and efficiency of this automated construction of the reaction network was examined by two examples. The first reaction under study was the HCHO + NH3 biomolecular reaction. The second example focused on the reaction network for a multi-species system composed of dozens of HCN and H2O compounds. The result indicated that the proposed approach was a valuable and effective tool for the automated exploration of reaction networks.

Decentralized Planning for Car-Like Robotic Swarm in Cluttered Environments

Robot swarm is a hot spot in robotic research community. In this paper, we propose a decentralized framework for car-like robotic swarm which is capable of real-time planning in cluttered environments. In this system, path finding is guided by environmental topology information to avoid frequent topological change, and search-based speed planning is leveraged to escape from infeasible initial value's local minima. Then spatial-temporal optimization is employed to generate a safe, smooth and dynamically feasible trajectory. During optimization, the trajectory is discretized by fixed time steps. Penalty is imposed on the signed distance between agents to realize collision avoidance, and differential flatness cooperated with limitation on front steer angle satisfies the non-holonomic constraints. With trajectories broadcast to the wireless network, agents are able to check and prevent potential collisions. We validate the robustness of our system in simulation and real-world experiments. Code will be released as open-source packages.

One-2-3-45: Any Single Image to 3D Mesh in 45 Seconds without Per-Shape Optimization

Single image 3D reconstruction is an important but challenging task that requires extensive knowledge of our natural world. Many existing methods solve this problem by optimizing a neural radiance field under the guidance of 2D diffusion models but suffer from lengthy optimization time, 3D inconsistency results, and poor geometry. In this work, we propose a novel method that takes a single image of any object as input and generates a full 360-degree 3D textured mesh in a single feed-forward pass. Given a single image, we first use a view-conditioned 2D diffusion model, Zero123, to generate multi-view images for the input view, and then aim to lift them up to 3D space. Since traditional reconstruction methods struggle with inconsistent multi-view predictions, we build our 3D reconstruction module upon an SDF-based generalizable neural surface reconstruction method and propose several critical training strategies to enable the reconstruction of 360-degree meshes. Without costly optimizations, our method reconstructs 3D shapes in significantly less time than existing methods. Moreover, our method favors better geometry, generates more 3D consistent results, and adheres more closely to the input image. We evaluate our approach on both synthetic data and in-the-wild images and demonstrate its superiority in terms of both mesh quality and runtime. In addition, our approach can seamlessly support the text-to-3D task by integrating with off-the-shelf text-to-image diffusion models.
