Gravitational waves from the quasi-circular inspiral of compact binaries in Einstein-aether theory

We study gravitational waves emitted by a binary system of non-spinning bodies in a quasi-circular inspiral within the framework of Einstein-aether theory. In particular, we compute explicitly and analytically the expressions for the time-domain and frequency-domain waveforms, gravitational wave polarizations, and response functions for both ground- and space-based detectors in the post-Newtonian approximation. We find that, when going beyond leading-order in the post-Newtonian approximation, the non-Einsteinian polarization modes contain terms that depend on both the first and the second harmonics of the orbital phase. We also calculate analytically the corresponding parameterized post-Einsteinian parameters, generalizing the existing framework to allow for different propagation speeds among scalar, vector and tensor modes, without assumptions about the magnitude of its coupling parameters, and meanwhile allowing the binary system to have relative motions with respect to the aether field. Such results allow for the easy construction of Einstein-aether templates that could be used in Bayesian tests of General Relativity in the future.

Stratifications in good reductions of Shimura varieties of abelian type

In this paper we study the geometry of good reductions of Shimura varieties of abelian type. More precisely, we construct the Newton stratification, Ekedahl-Oort stratification, and central leaves on the special fiber of a Shimura variety of abelian type at a good prime. We establish several basic properties of these stratifications, including the non-emptiness, closure relation and dimension formula, generalizing those previously known in the PEL and Hodge type cases. We also study the relations between these stratifications, both in general and in some special cases, such as those of fully Hodge-Newton decomposable type. We investigate the examples of quaternionic and orthogonal Shimura varieties in details.

Two-stage Fourth-order Gas Kinetic Solver-based Compact Subcell Finite Volume Method for Compressible Flows over Triangular Meshes

To meet the demand for complex geometries and high resolutions of small-scale flow structures, a two-stage fourth-order subcell finite volume (SCFV) method combining the gas-kinetic solver (GKS) with subcell techniques for compressible flows over (unstructured) triangular meshes was developed to improve the compactness and efficiency. Compared to the fourth-order GKS-based traditional finite volume (FV) method, the proposed method realizes compactness effectively by subdividing each cell into a set of subcells or control volumes (CVs) and selecting only face-neighboring cells for high-order compact reconstruction. Because a set of CVs share a solution polynomial, the reconstruction is more efficient than that for traditional FV-GKS, where each CV needs to be separately reconstructed. Unlike in the single-stage third-order SCFV-GKS, both accuracy and efficiency are improved significantly by two-stage fourth-order temporal discretization, for which only a second-order gas distribution function is needed to simplify the construction of the flux function and reduce computational costs. For viscous flows, it is not necessary to compute the viscous term with GKS. Compared to the fourth-stage Runge--Kutta method, one half of the stage is saved for achieving fourth-order time accuracy, which also helps to improve the efficiency. Therefore, a new high-order method with compactness, efficiency, and robustness is proposed by combining the SCFV method with the two-stage gas-kinetic flux. Several benchmark cases were tested to demonstrate the performance of the method in compressible flow simulations.

Adapting GPT, GPT-2 and BERT Language Models for Speech Recognition

Language models (LMs) pre-trained on massive amounts of text, in particular bidirectional encoder representations from Transformers (BERT), generative pre-training (GPT), and GPT-2, have become a key technology for many natural language processing tasks. In this paper, we present results using fine-tuned GPT, GPT-2, and their combination for automatic speech recognition (ASR). Unlike unidirectional LM GPT and GPT-2, BERT is bidirectional whose direct product of the output probabilities is no longer a valid language prior probability. A conversion method is proposed to compute the correct language prior probability based on bidirectional LM outputs in a mathematically exact way. Experimental results on the widely used AMI and Switchboard ASR tasks showed that the combination of the fine-tuned GPT and GPT-2 outperformed the combination of three neural LMs with different architectures trained from scratch on the in-domain text by up to a 12% relative word error rate reduction (WERR). Furthermore, on the AMI corpus, the proposed conversion for language prior probabilities enables BERT to obtain an extra 3% relative WERR, and the combination of BERT, GPT and GPT-2 results in further improvements.

ATOMS: ALMA Three-millimeter Observations of Massive Star-forming regions -- VI. On the formation of the "L" type filament in G286.21+0.17

Filaments play an important role in star formation, but the formation process of filaments themselves is still unclear. The high-mass star forming clump G286.21+0.17 (G286 for short) that contains an "L" type filament was thought to undergo global collapse. Our high resolution ALMA band 3 observations resolve the gas kinematics of G286 and reveal two sub-clumps with very different velocities inside it. We find that the "blue profile" (an indicator of gas infall) of HCO+ lines in single dish observations of G286 is actually caused by gas emission from the two sub-clumps rather than gas infall. We advise great caution in interpreting gas kinematics (e.g., infall) from line profiles toward distant massive clumps in single dish observations. Energetic outflows are identified in G286 but the outflows are not strong enough to drive expansion of the two sub-clumps. The two parts of the "L" type filament ("NW-SE" and "NE-SW" filaments) show prominent velocity gradients perpendicular to their major axes, indicating that they are likely formed due to large-scale compression flows. We argue that the large-scale compression flows could be induced by the expansion of nearby giant HII regions. The "NW-SE" and "NE-SW" filaments seem to be in collision, and a large amount of gas has been accumulated in the junction region where the most massive core G286c1 forms.

Tree-constrained Pointer Generator for End-to-end Contextual Speech Recognition

Contextual knowledge is important for real-world automatic speech recognition (ASR) applications. In this paper, a novel tree-constrained pointer generator (TCPGen) component is proposed that incorporates such knowledge as a list of biasing words into both attention-based encoder-decoder and transducer end-to-end ASR models in a neural-symbolic way. TCPGen structures the biasing words into an efficient prefix tree to serve as its symbolic input and creates a neural shortcut between the tree and the final ASR output distribution to facilitate recognising biasing words during decoding. Systems were trained and evaluated on the Librispeech corpus where biasing words were extracted at the scales of an utterance, a chapter, or a book to simulate different application scenarios. Experimental results showed that TCPGen consistently improved word error rates (WERs) compared to the baselines, and in particular, achieved significant WER reductions on the biasing words. TCPGen is highly efficient: it can handle 5,000 biasing words and distractors and only add a small overhead to memory use and computation cost.

Mini-batch stochastic Nesterov's smoothing method for constrained convex stochastic composite optimization

This paper considers a class of constrained convex stochastic composite optimization problems whose objective function is given by the summation of a differentiable convex component, together with a nonsmooth but convex component. The nonsmooth component has an explicit max structure that may not easy to compute its proximal mapping. In order to solve these problems, we propose a mini-batch stochastic Nesterov's smoothing (MSNS) method. Convergence and the optimal iteration complexity of the method are established. Numerical results are provided to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed MSNS method for a support vector machine (SVM) model.

Learning from Language Description: Low-shot Named Entity Recognition via Decomposed Framework

In this work, we study the problem of named entity recognition (NER) in a low resource scenario, focusing on few-shot and zero-shot settings. Built upon large-scale pre-trained language models, we propose a novel NER framework, namely SpanNER, which learns from natural language supervision and enables the identification of never-seen entity classes without using in-domain labeled data. We perform extensive experiments on 5 benchmark datasets and evaluate the proposed method in the few-shot learning, domain transfer and zero-shot learning settings. The experimental results show that the proposed method can bring 10%, 23% and 26% improvements in average over the best baselines in few-shot learning, domain transfer and zero-shot learning settings respectively.

Pathways for entanglement based quantum communication in the face of high noise

Entanglement based quantum communication offers an increased level of security in practical secret shared key distribution. One of the fundamental principles enabling this security -- the fact that interfering with one photon will destroy entanglement and thus be detectable -- is also the greatest obstacle. Random encounters of traveling photons, losses and technical imperfections make noise an inevitable part of any quantum communication scheme, severely limiting distance, key rate and environmental conditions in which QKD can be employed. Using photons entangled in their spatial degree of freedom, we show that the increased noise resistance of high-dimensional entanglement, can indeed be harnessed for practical key distribution schemes. We perform quantum key distribution in eight entangled paths at various levels of environmental noise and show key rates that, even after error correction and privacy amplification, still exceed $1$ bit per photon pair and furthermore certify a secure key at noise levels that would prohibit comparable qubit based schemes from working.

Certification of Genuine Multipartite Entanglement with General and Robust Device-independent Witnesses

Genuine multipartite entanglement represents the strongest type of entanglement, which is an essential resource for quantum information processing. Standard methods to detect genuine multipartite entanglement, e.g., entanglement witnesses, state tomography, or quantum state verification, require full knowledge of the Hilbert space dimension and precise calibration of measurement devices, which are usually difficult to acquire in an experiment. The most radical way to overcome these problems is to detect entanglement solely based on the Bell-like correlations of measurement outcomes collected in the experiment, namely, device-independently (DI). However, it is difficult to certify genuine entanglement of practical multipartite states in this way, and even more difficult to quantify it, due to the difficulty to identify optimal multipartite Bell inequalities and protocols tolerant to state impurity. In this work, we explore a general and robust DI method which can be applied to various realistic multipartite quantum state in arbitrary finite dimension, while merely relying on bipartite Bell inequalities. Our method allows us both to certify the presence of genuine multipartite entanglement and to quantify it. Several important classes of entangled states are tested with this method, leading to the detection of genuinely entangled states. We also certify genuine multipartite entanglement in weakly-entangled GHZ states, thus showing that the method applies equally well to less standard states.

Importance of the ion-pair lifetime in polymer electrolytes

Ion-pairing is commonly considered as a culprit for the reduced ionic conductivity in polymer electrolyte systems. However, this simple thermodynamic picture should not be taken literally, as ion-pairing is a dynamical phenomenon. Here we construct model PEO-LiTFSI systems with different degree of ion-pairing by tuning solvent polarity, and examine the relation between the cation-anion distinct conductivity $σ^\rm{d}_{+-}$ and the lifetime of ion-pairs $τ_{+-}$ using molecular dynamics simulations. It is found that there exist two distinct regimes where $σ^\rm{d}_{+-}$ scales with $1/τ_{+-}$ and $τ_{+-}$ respectively, and the latter is a signature of longer-lived ion-pairs which contribute negatively to the total ionic conductivity. This suggests that ion-pairs are kinetically different depending on the solvent polarity, which renders the ion-pair lifetime highly important when discussing its effect on ion transport in polymer electrolyte systems.

Deep Discriminative Feature Learning for Accent Recognition

Accent recognition with deep learning framework is a similar work to deep speaker identification, they're both expected to give the input speech an identifiable representation. Compared with the individual-level features learned by speaker identification network, the deep accent recognition work throws a more challenging point that forging group-level accent features for speakers. In this paper, we borrow and improve the deep speaker identification framework to recognize accents, in detail, we adopt Convolutional Recurrent Neural Network as front-end encoder and integrate local features using Recurrent Neural Network to make an utterance-level accent representation. Novelly, to address overfitting, we simply add Connectionist Temporal Classification based speech recognition auxiliary task during training, and for ambiguous accent discrimination, we introduce some powerful discriminative loss functions in face recognition works to enhance the discriminative power of accent features. We show that our proposed network with discriminative training method (without data-augment) is significantly ahead of the baseline system on the accent classification track in the Accented English Speech Recognition Challenge 2020, where the loss function Circle-Loss has achieved the best discriminative optimization for accent representation.

A reduced model for compressible viscous heat-conducting multicomponent flows

In the present paper we propose a reduced temperature non-equilibrium model for simulating multicomponent flows with inter-phase heat transfer, diffusion processes (including the viscosity and the heat conduction) and external energy sources. We derive three equivalent formulations for the proposed model. All the three formulations assume velocity and pressure equilibrium across the material interface. These equivalent forms provide different physical perspectives and numerical conveniences. Temperature equilibration and continuity across the material interfaces are achieved with the instantaneous thermal relaxation. Temperature equilibrium is maintained during the heat conduction process. The proposed models are proved to respect the thermodynamical laws. For numerical solution, the model is split into a hyperbolic partial differential equation (PDE) system and parabolic PDE systems. The former is solved with the high-order Godunov finite volume method that ensures the pressure-velocity-temperature (PVT) equilibrium conduction. The parabolic PDEs are solved with both the implicit and the explicit locally iterative method (LIM) based on Chebyshev parameters. Numerical results are presented for several multicomponent flow problems with diffusion processes. Furthermore, we apply the proposed model to simulate the target ablation problem that is of significance to inertial confinement fusion. Comparisons with one-temperature models in literature demonstrate the ability to maintain the PVT property and superior convergence performance of the proposed model in solving multicomponent problems with diffusions.

Odd-parity stability of black holes in Einstein-Aether gravity

In Einstein-Aether theory, we study the stability of black holes against odd-parity perturbations on a spherically symmetric and static background. For odd-parity modes, there are two dynamical degrees of freedom arising from the tensor gravitational sector and Aether vector field. We derive general conditions under which neither ghosts nor Laplacian instabilities are present for these dynamical fields. We apply these results to concrete black hole solutions known in the literature and show that some of those solutions can be excluded by the violation of stability conditions. The exact Schwarzschild solution present for $c_{13} = c_{14} = 0$, where $c_i$'s are the four coupling constants of the theory with $c_{ij}=c_i + c_j$, is prone to Laplacian instabilities along the angular direction throughout the horizon exterior. However, we find that the odd-parity instability of high radial and angular momentum modes is absent for black hole solutions with $c_{13} = c_4 = 0$ and $c_1 \geq 0$.

Bond Bipolarons: Sign-free Monte Carlo Approach

Polarons originating from phonon displacement modulated hopping have relatively light masses and, thus, are of significant current interest as candidates for bipolaron mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 121}, 247001 (2018)]. We observe that the bond model, when the dominant coupling comes from atomic vibrations on lattice bonds, can be solved by efficient sign-free Monte Carlo methods based on the path-integral formulation of the particle sector in combination with either the (real-space) diagrammatic or Fock-path-integral representation of the phonon sector. We introduce the corresponding algorithms and provide illustrative results for bipolarons in two dimensions. The results suggest that the route towards high-temperature superconductivity (if any) in the multiparametric space of the model lies between the Scylla of large size of moderately light bipolarons and Charybdis of large mass of compact bipolarons. As a result, on-site repulsion is helping $s$-wave superconductivity in sharp contrast with existing expectations.

Auto-encoder based Model for High-dimensional Imbalanced Industrial Data

With the proliferation of IoT devices, the distributed control systems are now capturing and processing more sensors at higher frequency than ever before. These new data, due to their volume and novelty, cannot be effectively consumed without the help of data-driven techniques. Deep learning is emerging as a promising technique to analyze these data, particularly in soft sensor modeling. The strong representational capabilities of complex data and the flexibility it offers from an architectural perspective make it a topic of active applied research in industrial settings. However, the successful applications of deep learning in soft sensing are still not widely integrated in factory control systems, because most of the research on soft sensing do not have access to large scale industrial data which are varied, noisy and incomplete. The results published in most research papers are therefore not easily reproduced when applied to the variety of data in industrial settings. Here we provide manufacturing data sets that are much larger and more complex than public open soft sensor data. Moreover, the data sets are from Seagate factories on active service with only necessary anonymization, so that they reflect the complex and noisy nature of real-world data. We introduce a variance weighted multi-headed auto-encoder classification model that fits well into the high-dimensional and highly imbalanced data. Besides the use of weighting or sampling methods to handle the highly imbalanced data, the model also simultaneously predicts multiple outputs by exploiting output-supervised representation learning and multi-task weighting.

Towards Making Deep Learning-based Vulnerability Detectors Robust

Automatically detecting software vulnerabilities in source code is an important problem that has attracted much attention. In particular, deep learning-based vulnerability detectors, or DL-based detectors, are attractive because they do not need human experts to define features or patterns of vulnerabilities. However, such detectors' robustness is unclear. In this paper, we initiate the study in this aspect by demonstrating that DL-based detectors are not robust against simple code transformations, dubbed attacks in this paper, as these transformations may be leveraged for malicious purposes. As a first step towards making DL-based detectors robust against such attacks, we propose an innovative framework, dubbed ZigZag, which is centered at (i) decoupling feature learning and classifier learning and (ii) using a ZigZag-style strategy to iteratively refine them until they converge to robust features and robust classifiers. Experimental results show that the ZigZag framework can substantially improve the robustness of DL-based detectors.
