Emotion recognition by fusing time synchronous and time asynchronous representations

In this paper, a novel two-branch neural network model structure is proposed for multimodal emotion recognition, which consists of a time synchronous branch (TSB) and a time asynchronous branch (TAB). To capture correlations between each word and its acoustic realisation, the TSB combines speech and text modalities at each input window frame and then does pooling across time to form a single embedding vector. The TAB, by contrast, provides cross-utterance information by integrating sentence text embeddings from a number of context utterances into another embedding vector. The final emotion classification uses both the TSB and the TAB embeddings. Experimental results on the IEMOCAP dataset demonstrate that the two-branch structure achieves state-of-the-art results in 4-way classification with all common test setups. When using automatic speech recognition (ASR) output instead of manually transcribed reference text, it is shown that the cross-utterance information considerably improves the robustness against ASR errors. Furthermore, by incorporating an extra class for all the other emotions, the final 5-way classification system with ASR hypotheses can be viewed as a prototype for more realistic emotion recognition systems.

Regularity theory for mixed local and nonlocal parabolic p-Laplace equations

We investigate the mixed local and nonlocal parabolic $p$-Laplace equation \begin{align*} \partial_t u(x,t)-Δ_p u(x,t)+\mathcal{L}u(x,t)=0, \end{align*} where $Δ_p$ is the local $p$-Laplace operator and $\mathcal{L}$ is the nonlocal $p$-Laplace operator. Based on the combination of suitable Caccioppoli-type inequality and Logarithmic Lemma with a De Giorgi-Nash-Moser iteration, we establish the local boundedness and Hölder continuity of weak solutions for such equations.

Planck Galactic Cold Clumps at High Galactic Latitude-A Study with CO Lines

Gas at high Galactic latitude is a relatively little-noticed component of the interstellar medium. In an effort to address this, forty-one Planck Galactic Cold Clumps at high Galactic latitude (HGal; $|b|>25^{\circ}$) were observed in $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO and C$^{18}$O J=1-0 lines, using the Purple Mountain Observatory 13.7-m telescope. $^{12}$CO (1-0) and $^{13}$CO (1-0) emission was detected in all clumps while C$^{18}$O (1-0) emission was only seen in sixteen clumps. The highest and average latitudes are $71.4^{\circ}$ and $37.8^{\circ}$, respectively. Fifty-one velocity components were obtained and then each was identified as a single clump. Thirty-three clumps were further mapped at 1$^\prime$ resolution and 54 dense cores were extracted. Among dense cores, the average excitation temperature $T_{\mathrm{ex}}$ of $^{12}$CO is 10.3 K. The average line widths of thermal and non-thermal velocity dispersions are $0.19$ km s$^{-1}$ and $0.46$ km s$^{-1}$ respectively, suggesting that these cores are dominated by turbulence. Distances of the HGal clumps given by Gaia dust reddening are about $120-360$ pc. The ratio of $X_{13}$/$X_{18}$ is significantly higher than that in the solar neighbourhood, implying that HGal gas has a different star formation history compared to the gas in the Galactic disk. HGal cores with sizes from $0.01-0.1$ pc show no notable Larson's relation and the turbulence remains supersonic down to a scale of slightly below $0.1$ pc. None of the HGal cores which bear masses from 0.01-1 $M_{\odot}$ are gravitationally bound and all appear to be confined by outer pressure.

STAR-IOS Aided NOMA Networks: Channel Model Approximation and Performance Analysis

Simultaneous transmitting and reflecting intelligent omini-surfaces (STAR-IOSs) are able to achieve full coverage "smart radio environments". By splitting the energy or altering the active number of STAR-IOS elements, STAR-IOSs provide high flexibility of successive interference cancellation (SIC) orders for non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems. Based on the aforementioned advantages, this paper investigates a STAR-IOS-aided downlink NOMA network with randomly deployed users. We first propose three tractable channel models for different application scenarios, namely the central limit model, the curve fitting model, and the M-fold convolution model. More specifically, the central limit model fits the scenarios with large-size STAR-IOSs while the curve fitting model is extended to evaluate multi-cell networks. However, these two models cannot obtain accurate diversity orders. Hence, we figure out the M-fold convolution model to derive accurate diversity orders. We consider three protocols for STAR-IOSs, namely, the energy splitting (ES) protocol, the time switching (TS) protocol, and the mode switching (MS) protocol. Based on the ES protocol, we derive analytical outage probability expressions for the paired NOMA users by the central limit model and the curve fitting model. Based on three STAR-IOS protocols, we derive the diversity gains of NOMA users by the M-fold convolution model. The analytical results reveal that the diversity gain of NOMA users is equal to the active number of STAR-IOS elements. Numerical results indicate that 1) in high signal-to-noise ratio regions, the central limit model performs as an upper bound, while a lower bound is obtained by the curve fitting model; 2) the TS protocol has the best performance but requesting more time blocks than other protocols; 3) the ES protocol outperforms the MS protocol as the ES protocol has higher diversity gains.

Combining Frame-Synchronous and Label-Synchronous Systems for Speech Recognition

Commonly used automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems can be classified into frame-synchronous and label-synchronous categories, based on whether the speech is decoded on a per-frame or per-label basis. Frame-synchronous systems, such as traditional hidden Markov model systems, can easily incorporate existing knowledge and can support streaming ASR applications. Label-synchronous systems, based on attention-based encoder-decoder models, can jointly learn the acoustic and language information with a single model, which can be regarded as audio-grounded language models. In this paper, we propose rescoring the N-best hypotheses or lattices produced by a first-pass frame-synchronous system with a label-synchronous system in a second-pass. By exploiting the complementary modelling of the different approaches, the combined two-pass systems achieve competitive performance without using any extra speech or text data on two standard ASR tasks. For the 80-hour AMI IHM dataset, the combined system has a 13.7% word error rate (WER) on the evaluation set, which is up to a 29% relative WER reduction over the individual systems. For the 300-hour Switchboard dataset, the WERs of the combined system are 5.7% and 12.1% on Switchboard and CallHome subsets of Hub5'00, and 13.2% and 7.6% on Switchboard Cellular and Fisher subsets of RT03, up to a 33% relative reduction in WER over the individual systems.

MFR 2021: Masked Face Recognition Competition

This paper presents a summary of the Masked Face Recognition Competitions (MFR) held within the 2021 International Joint Conference on Biometrics (IJCB 2021). The competition attracted a total of 10 participating teams with valid submissions. The affiliations of these teams are diverse and associated with academia and industry in nine different countries. These teams successfully submitted 18 valid solutions. The competition is designed to motivate solutions aiming at enhancing the face recognition accuracy of masked faces. Moreover, the competition considered the deployability of the proposed solutions by taking the compactness of the face recognition models into account. A private dataset representing a collaborative, multi-session, real masked, capture scenario is used to evaluate the submitted solutions. In comparison to one of the top-performing academic face recognition solutions, 10 out of the 18 submitted solutions did score higher masked face verification accuracy.

GAN-MDF: A Method for Multi-fidelity Data Fusion in Digital Twins

The Internet of Things (IoT) collects real-time data of physical systems, such as smart factory, intelligent robot and healtcare system, and provide necessary support for digital twins. Depending on the quality and accuracy, these multi-source data are divided into different fidelity levels. High-fidelity (HF) responses describe the system of interest accurately but are computed costly. In contrast, low-fidelity (LF) responses have a low computational cost but could not meet the required accuracy. Multi-fidelity data fusion (MDF) methods aims to use massive LF samples and small amounts of HF samples to develop an accurate and efficient model for describing the system with a reasonable computation burden. In this paper, we propose a novel generative adversarial network for MDF in digital twins (GAN-MDF). The generator of GAN-MDF is composed of two sub-networks: one extracts the LF features from an input; and the other integrates the input and the extracted LF features to form the input of the subsequent discriminator. The discriminator of GAN-MDF identifies whether the generator output is a real sample generated from HF model. To enhance the stability of GAN-MDF's training, we also introduce the supervised-loss trick to refine the generator weights during each iteration of the adversarial training. Compared with the state-of-the-art methods, the proposed GAN-MDF has the following advantages: 1) it performs well in the case of either nested or unnested sample structure; 2) there is no specific assumption on the data distribution; and 3) it has high robustness even when very few HF samples are provided. The experimental results also support the validity of GAN-MDF.

Zero-Sum Triangles for Involutory, Idempotent, Nilpotent and Unipotent Matrices

In some matrix formations, factorizations and transformations, we need special matrices with some properties and we wish that such matrices should be easily and simply generated and of integers. In this paper, we propose a zero-sum rule for the recurrence relations to construct integer triangles as triangular matrices with involutory, idempotent, nilpotent and unipotent properties, especially nilpotent and unipotent matrices of index 2. With the zero-sum rule we also give the conditions for the special matrices and the generic methods for the generation of those special matrices. The generated integer triangles are mostly newly discovered, and more combinatorial identities can be found with them.

On weak and viscosity solutions of nonlocal double phase equations

We consider the nonlocal double phase equation \begin{align*} \mathrm{P.V.} &\int_{\mathbb{R}^n}|u(x)-u(y)|^{p-2}(u(x)-u(y))K_{sp}(x,y)\,dy\\ &+\mathrm{P.V.} \int_{\mathbb{R}^n} a(x,y)|u(x)-u(y)|^{q-2}(u(x)-u(y))K_{tq}(x,y)\,dy=0, \end{align*} where $1<p\leq q$ and the modulating coefficient $a(\cdot,\cdot)\geq0$. Under some suitable hypotheses, we first use the De Giorgi-Nash-Moser methods to derive the local Hölder continuity for bounded weak solutions, and then establish the relationship between weak solutions and viscosity solutions to such equations.

Semantic Scene Completion via Integrating Instances and Scene in-the-Loop

Semantic Scene Completion aims at reconstructing a complete 3D scene with precise voxel-wise semantics from a single-view depth or RGBD image. It is a crucial but challenging problem for indoor scene understanding. In this work, we present a novel framework named Scene-Instance-Scene Network (\textit{SISNet}), which takes advantages of both instance and scene level semantic information. Our method is capable of inferring fine-grained shape details as well as nearby objects whose semantic categories are easily mixed-up. The key insight is that we decouple the instances from a coarsely completed semantic scene instead of a raw input image to guide the reconstruction of instances and the overall scene. SISNet conducts iterative scene-to-instance (SI) and instance-to-scene (IS) semantic completion. Specifically, the SI is able to encode objects' surrounding context for effectively decoupling instances from the scene and each instance could be voxelized into higher resolution to capture finer details. With IS, fine-grained instance information can be integrated back into the 3D scene and thus leads to more accurate semantic scene completion. Utilizing such an iterative mechanism, the scene and instance completion benefits each other to achieve higher completion accuracy. Extensively experiments show that our proposed method consistently outperforms state-of-the-art methods on both real NYU, NYUCAD and synthetic SUNCG-RGBD datasets. The code and the supplementary material will be available at \url{https://github.com/yjcaimeow/SISNet}.

Decision-making Oriented Clustering: Application to Pricing and Power Consumption Scheduling

Data clustering is an instrumental tool in the area of energy resource management. One problem with conventional clustering is that it does not take the final use of the clustered data into account, which may lead to a very suboptimal use of energy or computational resources. When clustered data are used by a decision-making entity, it turns out that significant gains can be obtained by tailoring the clustering scheme to the final task performed by the decision-making entity. The key to having good final performance is to automatically extract the important attributes of the data space that are inherently relevant to the subsequent decision-making entity, and partition the data space based on these attributes instead of partitioning the data space based on predefined conventional metrics. For this purpose, we formulate the framework of decision-making oriented clustering and propose an algorithm providing a decision-based partition of the data space and good representative decisions. By applying this novel framework and algorithm to a typical problem of real-time pricing and that of power consumption scheduling, we obtain several insightful analytical results such as the expression of the best representative price profiles for real-time pricing and a very significant reduction in terms of required clusters to perform power consumption scheduling as shown by our simulations.

Diffuse interface relaxation model for two-phase compressible flows with diffusion processes

The paper addresses a two-temperature model for simulating compressible two-phase flow taking into account diffusion processes related to the heat conduction and viscosity of the phases. This model is reduced from the two-phase Baer-Nunziato model in the limit of complete velocity relaxation and consists of the phase mass and energy balance equations, the mixture momentum equation, and a transport equation for the volume fraction.Terms describing effects of mechanical relaxation, temperature relaxation, and thermal conduction on volume fraction evolution are derived and demonstrated to be significant for heat conduction problems. The thermal conduction leads to instantaneous thermal relaxation so that the temperature equilibrium is always maintained in the interface region with meeting the entropy relations. A numerical method is developed to solve the model governing equations that ensures the pressure-velocity-temperature (PVT) equilibrium condition in its high-order extension. We solve the hyperbolic part of the governing equations with the Godunov method with the HLLC approximate Riemann solver. The non-linear parabolic part is solved with an efficient Chebyshev explicit iterative method without dealing with large sparse matrices. To verify the model and numerical methods proposed,we demonstrate numerical results of several numerical tests such as the multiphase shock tube problem, the multiphase impact problem, and the planar ablative Rayleigh-Taylor instability problem.

BERTifying the Hidden Markov Model for Multi-Source Weakly Supervised Named Entity Recognition

We study the problem of learning a named entity recognition (NER) tagger using noisy labels from multiple weak supervision sources. Though cheap to obtain, the labels from weak supervision sources are often incomplete, inaccurate, and contradictory, making it difficult to learn an accurate NER model. To address this challenge, we propose a conditional hidden Markov model (CHMM), which can effectively infer true labels from multi-source noisy labels in an unsupervised way. CHMM enhances the classic hidden Markov model with the contextual representation power of pre-trained language models. Specifically, CHMM learns token-wise transition and emission probabilities from the BERT embeddings of the input tokens to infer the latent true labels from noisy observations. We further refine CHMM with an alternate-training approach (CHMM-ALT). It fine-tunes a BERT-NER model with the labels inferred by CHMM, and this BERT-NER's output is regarded as an additional weak source to train the CHMM in return. Experiments on four NER benchmarks from various domains show that our method outperforms state-of-the-art weakly supervised NER models by wide margins.

Automatic View Selection in Graph Databases

Recently, several works have studied the problem of view selection in graph databases. However, existing methods cannot fully exploit the graph properties of views, e.g., supergraph views and common subgraph views, which leads to a low view utility and duplicate view content. To address the problem, we propose an end-to-end graph view selection tool, G-View, which can judiciously generate a view set from a query workload by exploring the graph properties of candidate views and considering their efficacy. Specifically, given a graph query set and a space budget, G-View translates each query to a candidate view pattern and checks the query containment via a filtering-and-verification framework. G-View then selects the views using a graph gene algorithm (GGA), which relies on a three-phase framework that explores graph view transformations to reduce the view space and optimize the view benefit. Finally, G-View generates the extended graph views that persist all the edge-induced subgraphs to answer the subgraph and supergraph queries simultaneously. Extensive experiments on real-life and synthetic datasets demonstrated G-View achieved averagely 21x and 2x query performance speedup over two view-based methods while having 2x and 5x smaller space overhead, respectively. Moreover, the proposed selection algorithm, GGA, outperformed other selection methods in both effectiveness and efficiency.

Anisotropic superconductivity in topological crystalline metal Pb$_{1/3}$TaS$_2$ with multiple Dirac fermions

Topological crystalline metals/semimetals (TCMs) have stimulated a great research interest, which broaden the classification of topological phases and provide a valuable platform to explore topological superconductivity. Here, we report the discovery of superconductivity and topological features in Pb-intercalated transition-metal dichalcogenide Pb$_{1/3}$TaS$_2$. Systematic measurements indicate that Pb$_{1/3}$TaS$_2$ is a quasi-two-dimensional (q-2D) type-II superconductor ({\em T}$_c \approx$ 2.8 K) with a significantly enhanced anisotropy of upper critical field ($γ_{H_{c2}}$ = $H_{c2}^{ab}/H_{c2}^{c}$ $\approx$ 17). In addition, first-principles calculations reveal that Pb$_{1/3}$TaS$_2$ hosts multiple topological Dirac fermions in the electronic band structure. We discover four groups of Dirac nodal lines on the $k_z = π$ plane and two sets of Dirac points on the rotation/screw axes, which are protected by crystalline symmetries and robust against spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Dirac-cone-like surface states emerge on the (001) surface because of band inversion. Our work shows that the TCM candidate Pb$_{1/3}$TaS$_2$ is a promising arena to study the interplay between superconductivity and topological Dirac fermions.

Machine Learning Inference of Molecular Dipole Moment in Liquid Water

Molecular dipole moment in liquid water is an intriguing property, partly due to the fact that there is no unique way to partition the total electron density into individual molecular contributions. The prevailing method to circumvent this problem is to use maximally localized Wannier functions, which perform a unitary transformation of the occupied molecular orbitals by minimizing the spread function of Boys. Here we revisit this problem using a data-driven approach satisfying two physical constraints, namely: i) The displacement of the atomic charges is proportional to the Berry phase polarization; ii) Each water molecule has a formal charge of zero. It turns out that the distribution of molecular dipole moments in liquid water inferred from latent variables is surprisingly similar to that obtained from maximally localized Wannier functions. Apart from putting a maximum-likelihood footnote to the established method, this work highlights the capability of graph convolution based charge models and the importance of physical constraints on improving the interpretability.

Regularity for quasi-linear parabolic equations with nonhomogeneous degeneracy or singularity

We introduce a new class of quasi-linear parabolic equations involving nonhomogeneous degeneracy or/and singularity $$ \partial_t u=[|D u|^q+a(x,t)|D u|^s]\left(Δu+(p-2)\left\langle D^2 u\frac{D u}{|D u|},\frac{D u}{|D u|}\right\rangle\right), $$ where $1<p<\infty$, $-1<q\leq s<\infty$ and $a(x,t)\ge 0$. The motivation to investigate this model stems not only from the connections to tug-of-war like stochastic games with noise, but also from the non-standard growth problems of double phase type. According to different values of $q,s$, such equations include nonhomogeneous degeneracy or singularity, and may involve these two features simultaneously. In particular, when $q=p-2$ and $q<s$, it will encompass the parabolic $p$-Laplacian both in divergence form and in non-divergence form. We aim to explore the from $L^\infty$ to $C^{1,α}$ regularity theory for the aforementioned problem. To be precise, under some proper assumptions, we use geometrical methods to establish the local Hölder regularity of spatial gradients of viscosity solutions.

Convergent Filaments Contracting Towards an Intermediate-mass Prestellar Core

Filamentary structures are closely associated with star-forming cores, but their detailed physical connections are still not clear. We studied the dense gas in the region of OMC-3 MMS-7 in Orion A molecular cloud using the molecular lines observed with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and the Submillimeter Array (SMA). The ALMA N$_2$H$^+$ (1-0) emission has revealed three dense filaments intersected at the center, coincident with the central core MMS-7, which has a mass of $3.6\,M_\odot$. The filaments and cores are embedded in a parental clump with total mass of $29\,M_\odot$. The N$_2$H$^+$ velocity field exhibits a noticeable increasing trend along the filaments towards the central core MMS-7 with a scale of $v-v_{\rm lsr} \simeq 1.5$ ${\rm km\, s^{-1}}$ over a spatial range of $\sim$20 arcsec ($8\times 10^3$ AU), corresponding to a gradient of $40\,{\rm km\, s^{-1}}\,{\rm pc}^{-1}$. This feature is most likely to indicate an infall motion towards the center. The derived infall rate ($8\times 10^{-5}\,M_\odot$ year$^{-1}$) and timescale ($3.6\times 10^5$ years) are much lower than that in a spherical free-fall collapse and more consistent with the contraction of filament structures. The filaments also exhibit a possible fragmentation, but it does not seem to largely interrupt the gas structure or the infall motion towards the center. MMS-7 thus provides an example of filamentary infall into an individual prestellar core. The filament contraction could be less intense but more steady than the global spherical collapse, and may help generate an intermediate- or even high-mass star.
