Multi-Slot Over-The-Air Computation in Fading Channels

IoT systems typically involve separate data collection and processing, and the former faces the scalability issue when the number of nodes increases. For some tasks, only the result of data fusion is needed. Then, the whole process can be realized in an efficient way, integrating the data collection and fusion in one step by over-the-air computation (AirComp). Its shortcoming, however, is signal distortion when channel gains of nodes are different, which cannot be well solved by transmission power control alone in times of deep fading. To address this issue, in this paper, we propose a multi-slot over-the-air computation (MS-AirComp) framework for the sum estimation in fading channels. Compared with conventional data collection (one slot for each node) and AirComp (one slot for all nodes), MS-AirComp is an alternative policy that lies between them, exploiting multiple slots to improve channel gains so as to facilitate power control. Specifically, the transmissions are distributed over multiple slots and a threshold of channel gain is set for distributed transmission scheduling. Each node transmits its signal only once, in the slot when its channel gain first gets above the threshold, or in the last slot when its channel gain remains below the threshold. Theoretical analysis gives the closed-form of the computation error in fading channels, based on which the optimal parameters are found. Noticing that computation error tends to be reduced at the cost of more transmission power, a method is suggested to control the increase of transmission power. Simulations confirm that the proposed method can effectively reduce computation error, compared with state-of-the-art methods.

Reliable Over-the-Air Computation by Amplify-and-Forward Based Relay

In typical sensor networks, data collection and processing are separated. A sink collects data from all nodes sequentially, which is very time consuming. Over-the-air computation, as a new diagram of sensor networks, integrates data collection and processing in one slot: all nodes transmit their signals simultaneously in the analog wave and the processing is done in the air. This method, although efficient, requires that signals from all nodes arrive at the sink, aligned in signal magnitude so as to enable an unbiased estimation. For nodes far away from the sink with a low channel gain, misalignment in signal magnitude is unavoidable. To solve this problem, in this paper, we investigate the amplify-and-forward based relay, in which a relay node amplifies signals from many nodes at the same time. We first discuss the general relay model and a simple relay policy. Then, a coherent relay policy is proposed to reduce relay transmission power. Directly minimizing the computation error tends to over-increase node transmission power. Therefore, the two relay policies are further refined with a new metric, and the transmission power is reduced while the computation error is kept low. In addition, the coherent relay policy helps to reduce the relay transmission power by half, to below the limit, which makes it one step ahead towards practical applications.

Boundedness of operators generated by fractional semigroups associated with Schrödinger operators on Campanato type spaces via $T1$ theorem

Let $\mathcal{L}=-Δ+V$ be a Schrödinger operator, where the nonnegative potential $V$ belongs to the reverse Hölder class $B_{q}$. By the aid of the subordinative formula, we estimate the regularities of the fractional heat semigroup, $\{e^{-t\mathcal{L}^α}\}_{t>0},$ associated with $\mathcal{L}$. As an application, we obtain the $BMO^γ_{\mathcal{L}}$-boundedness of the maximal function, and the Littlewood-Paley $g$-functions associated with $\mathcal{L}$ via $T1$ theorem, respectively.

ATOMS:ALMA Three-millimeter Observations of Massive Star-forming regions -- III :Catalogues of candidate hot molecular cores and Hyper/Ultra compact HII regions

We have identified 453 compact dense cores in 3 mm continuum emission maps in the ATOMS (ALMA Three-millimeter Observations of Massive Star-forming regions) survey, and compiled three catalogues of high-mass star forming cores. One catalogue, referred to as H/UC-HII catalogue, includes 89 cores that enshroud hyper/ultra compact (H/UC) HII regions as characterized by associated compact H40alpha emission. A second catalogue, referred to as pure s-cHMC, includes 32 candidate Hot Molecular Cores (HMCs) showing rich spectra (N>20lines) of complex organic molecules (COMs) but not associated with H/UC-HII regions. The third catalogue, referred to as pure w-cHMC, includes 58 candidate HMCs with relatively low levels of COM richness and not associated with H/UC-HII regions. These three catalogues of dense cores provide an important foundation for future studies of the early stages of high-mass star formation across the Milky Way. We also find that nearly half of H/UC-HII cores are candidate HMCs. From the number counts of COM-containing and H/UC-HII cores, we suggest that the duration of high-mass protostellar cores showing chemically rich features is at least comparable to the lifetime of H/UC-HII regions. For cores in the H/UC-HII catalogue, the width of the H40alpha line increases as the core size decreases, suggesting that the non-thermal dynamical and/or pressure line-broadening mechanisms dominate on the smaller scales of the H/UC-HII cores.

Combination of Deep Speaker Embeddings for Diarisation

Significant progress has recently been made in speaker diarisation after the introduction of d-vectors as speaker embeddings extracted from neural network (NN) speaker classifiers for clustering speech segments. To extract better-performing and more robust speaker embeddings, this paper proposes a c-vector method by combining multiple sets of complementary d-vectors derived from systems with different NN components. Three structures are used to implement the c-vectors, namely 2D self-attentive, gated additive, and bilinear pooling structures, relying on attention mechanisms, a gating mechanism, and a low-rank bilinear pooling mechanism respectively. Furthermore, a neural-based single-pass speaker diarisation pipeline is also proposed in this paper, which uses NNs to achieve voice activity detection, speaker change point detection, and speaker embedding extraction. Experiments and detailed analyses are conducted on the challenging AMI and NIST RT05 datasets which consist of real meetings with 4--10 speakers and a wide range of acoustic conditions. For systems trained on the AMI training set, relative speaker error rate (SER) reductions of 13% and 29% are obtained by using c-vectors instead of d-vectors on the AMI dev and eval sets respectively, and a relative reduction of 15% in SER is observed on RT05, which shows the robustness of the proposed methods. By incorporating VoxCeleb data into the training set, the best c-vector system achieved 7%, 17% and16% relative SER reduction compared to the d-vector on the AMI dev, eval, and RT05 sets respectively

SumGNN: Multi-typed Drug Interaction Prediction via Efficient Knowledge Graph Summarization

Thanks to the increasing availability of drug-drug interactions (DDI) datasets and large biomedical knowledge graphs (KGs), accurate detection of adverse DDI using machine learning models becomes possible. However, it remains largely an open problem how to effectively utilize large and noisy biomedical KG for DDI detection. Due to its sheer size and amount of noise in KGs, it is often less beneficial to directly integrate KGs with other smaller but higher quality data (e.g., experimental data). Most of the existing approaches ignore KGs altogether. Some try to directly integrate KGs with other data via graph neural networks with limited success. Furthermore, most previous works focus on binary DDI prediction whereas the multi-typed DDI pharmacological effect prediction is a more meaningful but harder task. To fill the gaps, we propose a new method SumGNN: knowledge summarization graph neural network, which is enabled by a subgraph extraction module that can efficiently anchor on relevant subgraphs from a KG, a self-attention based subgraph summarization scheme to generate a reasoning path within the subgraph, and a multi-channel knowledge and data integration module that utilizes massive external biomedical knowledge for significantly improved multi-typed DDI predictions. SumGNN outperforms the best baseline by up to 5.54\%, and the performance gain is particularly significant in low data relation types. In addition, SumGNN provides interpretable prediction via the generated reasoning paths for each prediction.

Sky localization of space-based gravitational wave detectors

Localizing the sky position of the gravitational wave source is a key scientific goal for gravitational wave observations. Employing the Fisher information matrix approximation, we compute the angular resolutions of LISA and TianQin, two planned space-based gravitational wave detectors and examine how detectors' configuration properties, such as the orientation change of the detector plane, heliocentric or geocentric motion and the arm length etc. affect the accuracy of source localization. We find that the amplitude modulation due to the annual changing orientation of the detector plane helps LISA get better accuracy in the sky localization and better sky coverage at frequencies below several mHz, and its effect on TianQin is negligible although the orientation of TianQin's detector plane is fixed. At frequencies above roughly 30mHz, TianQin's ability in the sky localization is better than LISA. Further we explore potential space detector networks for fast and accurate localization of the gravitational wave sources. The LISA-TianQin network has better ability in sky localization for sources with frequencies in the range 1-100 mHz and the network has larger sky coverage for the angular resolution than the individual detector.

Peierls/Su-Schrieffer-Heeger polarons in two dimensions

Polarons with different types of electron-phonon coupling have fundamentally different properties. When the dominant interaction is between the electron density and lattice displacement, the momentum of the ground state does not change and the polaron gets exponentially heavy at strong coupling. In contrast, one-dimensional Peierls/Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (PSSH) polarons with interaction originating from displacement-modulated hopping feature a shift of the ground-state momentum to finite values and moderate values of effective mass as coupling is increased REF[Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 266605 (2010)]. Based on Diagrammatic Monte Carlo method, we investigate whether unusual properties of PSSH polarons depend on the type of the displacement-modulated hopping and to what degree they survive in higher dimension. We study two different PSSH models: with bosonic degrees of freedom residing on sites (model A) and bonds (model B) of the two-dimensional square lattice. For model A, we find that in both adiabatic and intermediate regimes, the momentum of the ground state experiences a continuous transition from zero to a finite value as a function of coupling strength. The transition is driven by quadratic instability of the dispersion function, implying that effective mass diverges at the critical point, and then decreases in an anisotropic fashion with increasing coupling. Unexpectedly, for model B, the momentum of the ground state always stays at zero and the effective mass increases monotonously with coupling. The increase is far from exponential and tends to level-off at strong interaction, resulting in relatively light polarons. Having light polarons in the strong coupling regime is crucial for the bi-polaron mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity REF[Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 247001 (2018)].

Accuracy of estimation of parameters with space-borne gravitational wave observatory

Employing the Fisher information matrix analysis, we estimate parameter errors of TianQin and LISA for monochromatic gravitational waves. With the long-wavelength approximation we derive analytical formulas for the parameter estimation errors. We separately analyze the effects of the amplitude modulation due to the changing orientation of the detector plane and the Doppler modulation due to the translational motion of the center of the detector around the Sun. We disclose that in the low frequency regime there exist different patterns in angular resolutions and estimation errors of sources' parameters between LISA and TianQin, the angular resolution falls off as $S_n(f)/f^2$ for TianQin but $S_n(f)$ for LISA, and the estimation errors of the other parameters fall off as $\sqrt{S_n(f)}/f$ for TianQin but $\sqrt{S_n(f)}$ for LISA. In the medium frequency regime we observe the same pattern where the angular resolution falls off as $S_n(f)/f^2$ and the estimation errors of the other parameters fall off as $\sqrt{S_n(f)}$ for both TianQin and LISA. In the high frequency regime, the long-wavelength approximation fails, we numerically calculate the parameter estimation errors for LISA and TianQin and find that the parameter estimation errors measured by TianQin are smaller than those by LISA.

PanGu-$α$: Large-scale Autoregressive Pretrained Chinese Language Models with Auto-parallel Computation

Large-scale Pretrained Language Models (PLMs) have become the new paradigm for Natural Language Processing (NLP). PLMs with hundreds of billions parameters such as GPT-3 have demonstrated strong performances on natural language understanding and generation with \textit{few-shot in-context} learning. In this work, we present our practice on training large-scale autoregressive language models named PanGu-$α$, with up to 200 billion parameters. PanGu-$α$ is developed under the MindSpore and trained on a cluster of 2048 Ascend 910 AI processors. The training parallelism strategy is implemented based on MindSpore Auto-parallel, which composes five parallelism dimensions to scale the training task to 2048 processors efficiently, including data parallelism, op-level model parallelism, pipeline model parallelism, optimizer model parallelism and rematerialization. To enhance the generalization ability of PanGu-$α$, we collect 1.1TB high-quality Chinese data from a wide range of domains to pretrain the model. We empirically test the generation ability of PanGu-$α$ in various scenarios including text summarization, question answering, dialogue generation, etc. Moreover, we investigate the effect of model scales on the few-shot performances across a broad range of Chinese NLP tasks. The experimental results demonstrate the superior capabilities of PanGu-$α$ in performing various tasks under few-shot or zero-shot settings.

DeepfakeUCL: Deepfake Detection via Unsupervised Contrastive Learning

Face deepfake detection has seen impressive results recently. Nearly all existing deep learning techniques for face deepfake detection are fully supervised and require labels during training. In this paper, we design a novel deepfake detection method via unsupervised contrastive learning. We first generate two different transformed versions of an image and feed them into two sequential sub-networks, i.e., an encoder and a projection head. The unsupervised training is achieved by maximizing the correspondence degree of the outputs of the projection head. To evaluate the detection performance of our unsupervised method, we further use the unsupervised features to train an efficient linear classification network. Extensive experiments show that our unsupervised learning method enables comparable detection performance to state-of-the-art supervised techniques, in both the intra- and inter-dataset settings. We also conduct ablation studies for our method.

Sketch-based Normal Map Generation with Geometric Sampling

Normal map is an important and efficient way to represent complex 3D models. A designer may benefit from the auto-generation of high quality and accurate normal maps from freehand sketches in 3D content creation. This paper proposes a deep generative model for generating normal maps from users sketch with geometric sampling. Our generative model is based on Conditional Generative Adversarial Network with the curvature-sensitive points sampling of conditional masks. This sampling process can help eliminate the ambiguity of generation results as network input. In addition, we adopted a U-Net structure discriminator to help the generator be better trained. It is verified that the proposed framework can generate more accurate normal maps.

Neural Kalman Filtering for Speech Enhancement

Statistical signal processing based speech enhancement methods adopt expert knowledge to design the statistical models and linear filters, which is complementary to the deep neural network (DNN) based methods which are data-driven. In this paper, by using expert knowledge from statistical signal processing for network design and optimization, we extend the conventional Kalman filtering (KF) to the supervised learning scheme, and propose the neural Kalman filtering (NKF) for speech enhancement. Two intermediate clean speech estimates are first produced from recurrent neural networks (RNN) and linear Wiener filtering (WF) separately and are then linearly combined by a learned NKF gain to yield the NKF output. Supervised joint training is applied to NKF to learn to automatically trade-off between the instantaneous linear estimation made by the WF and the long-term non-linear estimation made by the RNN. The NKF method can be seen as using expert knowledge from WF to regularize the RNN estimations to improve its generalization ability to the noise conditions unseen in the training. Experiments in different noisy conditions show that the proposed method outperforms the baseline methods both in terms of objective evaluation metrics and automatic speech recognition (ASR) word error rates (WERs).

Simulating noisy variational quantum eigensolver with local noise models

Variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) is promising to show quantum advantage on near-term noisy-intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) computers. One central problem of VQE is the effect of noise, especially the physical noise on realistic quantum computers. We study systematically the effect of noise for the VQE algorithm, by performing numerical simulations with various local noise models, including the amplitude damping, dephasing, and depolarizing noise. We show that the ground state energy will deviate from the exact value as the noise probability increase and normally noise will accumulate as the circuit depth increase. We build a noise model to capture the noise in a real quantum computer. Our numerical simulation is consistent with the quantum experiment results on IBM Quantum computers through Cloud. Our work sheds new light on the practical research of noisy VQE. The deep understanding of the noise effect of VQE may help to develop quantum error mitigation techniques on near team quantum computers.

Evolutions of CH$_3$CN abundance in molecular clumps

To investigate the effects of massive star evolution on surrounding molecules, we select 9 massive clumps previously observed with the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) telescope and the Submillimeter Array (SMA) telescope. Based on the observations of APEX, we obtain luminosity to mass ratio L$_{\rm clump}$/M$_{\rm clump}$ that range from 10 to 154 L$_{\sun}$/M$_{\sun}$, where some of them embedded Ultra Compact (UC) H\,{\footnotesize II} region. Using the SMA, CH$_3$CN (12$_{\rm K}$--11$_{\rm K}$) transitions were observed toward 9 massive star-forming regions. We derive the CH$_3$CN rotational temperature and column density using XCLASS program, and calculate its fractional abundance. We find that CH$_3$CN temperature seems to increase with the increase of L$_{\rm clump}$/M$_{\rm clump}$ when the ratio is between 10 to 40 L$_{\sun}$/M$_{\sun}$, then decrease when L$_{\rm clump}$/M$_{\rm clump}$ $\ge$ 40 L$_{\sun}$/M$_{\sun}$. Assuming the CH$_3$CN gas is heated by radiation from the central star, the effective distance of CH$_3$CN relative to the central star is estimated. The distance range from $\sim$ 0.003 to $\sim$ 0.083 pc, which accounts for $\sim$ 1/100 to $\sim$ 1/1000 of clump size. The effective distance increases slightly as L$_{\rm clump}$/M$_{\rm clump}$ increases (R$_{\rm eff}$ $\sim$ (L$_{\rm clump}$/M$_{\rm clump}$)$^{0.5\pm0.2}$). Overall, the CH$_3$CN abundance is found to decrease as the clumps evolve, e.g., X$_{\rm CH_3CN}$ $\sim$ (L$_{\rm clump}$/M$_{\rm clump}$)$^{-1.0\pm0.7}$. The steady decline of CH$_3$CN abundance as the clumps evolution can be interpreted as a result of photodissociation.

Real-time Forecast Models for TBM Load Parameters Based on Machine Learning Methods

Because of the fast advance rate and the improved personnel safety, tunnel boring machines (TBMs) have been widely used in a variety of tunnel construction projects. The dynamic modeling of TBM load parameters (including torque, advance rate and thrust) plays an essential part in the design, safe operation and fault prognostics of this complex engineering system. In this paper, based on in-situ TBM operational data, we use the machine-learning (ML) methods to build the real-time forecast models for TBM load parameters, which can instantaneously provide the future values of the TBM load parameters as long as the current data are collected. To decrease the model complexity and improve the generalization, we also apply the least absolute shrinkage and selection (Lasso) method to extract the essential features of the forecast task. The experimental results show that the forecast models based on deep-learning methods, {\it e.g.}, recurrent neural network and its variants, outperform the ones based on the shallow-learning methods, {\it e.g.}, support vector regression and random forest. Moreover, the Lasso-based feature extraction significantly improves the performance of the resultant models.

Analysis of the tradeoff between health and economic impacts of the Covid-19 epidemic

Various measures have been taken in different countries to mitigate the Covid-19 epidemic. But, throughout the world, many citizens don't understand well how these measures are taken and even question the decisions taken by their government. Should the measures be more (or less) restrictive? Are they taken for a too long (or too short) period of time? To provide some quantitative elements of response to these questions, we consider the well-known SEIR model for the Covid-19 epidemic propagation and propose a pragmatic model of the government decision-making operation. Although simple and obviously improvable, the proposed model allows us to study the tradeoff between health and economic aspects in a pragmatic and insightful way. Assuming a given number of phases for the epidemic and a desired tradeoff between health and economic aspects, it is then possible to determine the optimal duration of each phase and the optimal severity level for each of them. The numerical analysis is performed for the case of France but the adopted approach can be applied to any country. One of the takeaway messages of this analysis is that being able to implement the optimal 4-phase epidemic management strategy in France would have led to 1.05 million infected people and a GDP loss of 231 billion euro instead of 6.88 million of infected and a loss of 241 billion euro. This indicates that, seen from the proposed model perspective, the effectively implemented epidemic management strategy is good economically, whereas substantial improvements might have been obtained in terms of health impact. Our analysis indicates that the lockdown/severe phase should have been more severe but shorter, and the adjustment phase occurred earlier. Due to the natural tendency of people to deviate from the official rules, updating measures every month over the whole epidemic episode seems to be more appropriate.

A Riemannian smoothing steepest descent method for non-Lipschitz optimization on submanifolds

In this paper, we propose a Riemannian smoothing steepest descent method to minimize a nonconvex and non-Lipschitz function on submanifolds. The generalized subdifferentials on Riemannian manifold and the Riemannian gradient sub-consistency are defined and discussed. We prove that any accumulation point of the sequence generated by the Riemannian smoothing steepest descent method is a stationary point associated with the smoothing function employed in the method, which is necessary for the local optimality of the original non-Lipschitz problem. Under the Riemannian gradient sub-consistency condition, we also prove that any accumulation point is a Riemannian limiting stationary point of the original non-Lipschitz problem. Numerical experiments are conducted to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method.
