Disentangled Graph Neural Networks for Session-based Recommendation

Session-based recommendation (SBR) has drawn increasingly research attention in recent years, due to its great practical value by only exploiting the limited user behavior history in the current session. Existing methods typically learn the session embedding at the item level, namely, aggregating the embeddings of items with or without the attention weights assigned to items. However, they ignore the fact that a user's intent on adopting an item is driven by certain factors of the item (e.g., the leading actors of an movie). In other words, they have not explored finer-granularity interests of users at the factor level to generate the session embedding, leading to sub-optimal performance. To address the problem, we propose a novel method called Disentangled Graph Neural Network (Disen-GNN) to capture the session purpose with the consideration of factor-level attention on each item. Specifically, we first employ the disentangled learning technique to cast item embeddings into the embedding of multiple factors, and then use the gated graph neural network (GGNN) to learn the embedding factor-wisely based on the item adjacent similarity matrix computed for each factor. Moreover, the distance correlation is adopted to enhance the independence between each pair of factors. After representing each item with independent factors, an attention mechanism is designed to learn user intent to different factors of each item in the session. The session embedding is then generated by aggregating the item embeddings with attention weights of each item's factors. To this end, our model takes user intents at the factor level into account to infer the user purpose in a session. Extensive experiments on three benchmark datasets demonstrate the superiority of our method over existing methods.

Chemo-dynamics and asteroseismic ages of seven metal-poor red giants from the Kepler field

In this work we combine information from solar-like oscillations, high-resolution spectroscopy and Gaia astrometry to derive stellar ages, chemical abundances and kinematics for a group of seven metal-poor Red Giants and characterise them in a multidimensional chrono-chemo-dynamical space. Chemical abundance ratios were derived through classical spectroscopic analysis employing 1D LTE atmospheres on Keck/HIRES spectra. Stellar ages, masses and radii were calculated with grid-based modelling, taking advantage of availability of asteroseismic information from Kepler. The dynamical properties were determined with Galpy using Gaia EDR3 astrometric solutions. Our results suggest that underestimated parallax errors make the effect of Gaia parallaxes more important than different choices of model grid or -- in the case of stars ascending the RGB -- mass-loss prescription. Two of the stars in this study are identified as potentially evolved halo blue stragglers. Four objects are likely members of the accreted Milky Way halo, and their possible relationship with known accretion events is discussed.

Integrated Sensing and Communications for V2I Networks: Dynamic Predictive Beamforming for Extended Vehicle Targets

We investigate sensing-assisted predictive beamforming schemes for vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication by exploiting the integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) functionalities at the roadside unit (RSU). The RSU deploys a massive multi-input-multi-output (mMIMO) array and operates at millimeter wave (mmWave) frequencies. The pencil-sharp mMIMO beams and fine range resolution achieved at mmWave, implicates that the point target assumption is impractical in such V2I networks, as the volume and shape of the vehicles become essential for beamforming. Simply pointing a beam to the vehicle may result in the communication receiver (CR) never lying in the beam, even when the vehicle's trajectory is accurately tracked. To tackle this problem, we consider the extended vehicle target with two novel beam tracking schemes. For the first scheme, the beamwidth is adjusted in real-time to cover the entire vehicle, followed by an extended Kalman filtering (EKF) algorithm to predict and track the position of CR according to the resolved high-resolution scatterers. An upgraded scheme is further proposed by splitting each transmission block into two stages. The first stage is exploited for ISAC transmission, where a wide beam is adopted for both communication and sensing. Based on the sensed results at the first stage, the second stage is dedicated to communication by adopting a pencil-sharp beam, yielding a significant improvement of the achievable rate. We further reveal the inherent tradeoff between the two stages in terms of their durations, and develop an optimal time allocation strategy that maximizes the average achievable rate. Finally, numerical results are provided to verify the superiorities of proposed schemes over the state-of-the-art methods.

Feature-level Attentive ICF for Recommendation

Item-based collaborative filtering (ICF) enjoys the advantages of high recommendation accuracy and ease in online penalization and thus is favored by the industrial recommender systems. ICF recommends items to a target user based on their similarities to the previously interacted items of the user. Great progresses have been achieved for ICF in recent years by applying advanced machine learning techniques (e.g., deep neural networks) to learn the item similarity from data. The early methods simply treat all the historical items equally and recently proposed methods attempt to distinguish the different importance of historical items when recommending a target item. Despite the progress, we argue that those ICF models neglect the diverse intents of users on adopting items (e.g., watching a movie because of the director, leading actors, or the visual effects). As a result, they fail to estimate the item similarity on a finer-grained level to predict the user's preference to an item, resulting in sub-optimal recommendation. In this work, we propose a general feature-level attention method for ICF models. The key of our method is to distinguish the importance of different factors when computing the item similarity for a prediction. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our method, we design a light attention neural network to integrate both item-level and feature-level attention for neural ICF models. It is model-agnostic and easy-to-implement. We apply it to two baseline ICF models and evaluate its effectiveness on six public datasets. Extensive experiments show the feature-level attention enhanced models consistently outperform their counterparts, demonstrating the potential of differentiating user intents on the feature-level for ICF recommendation models.

Safeguarding UAV Networks Through Integrated Sensing, Jamming, and Communications

This paper proposes an integrated sensing, jamming, and communications (ISJC) framework for securing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled wireless networks. The proposed framework advocates the dual use of artificial noise transmitted by an information UAV for simultaneous jamming and sensing of an eavesdropping UAV. Based on the information sensed in the previous time slot, an optimization problem for online resource allocation design is formulated to maximize the number of securely served users in the current time slot, while taking into account a tracking performance constraint and quality-of-service (QoS) requirements regarding the leakage information rate to the eavesdropper and the downlink data rate to the legitimate users. A channel correlation-based algorithm is proposed to obtain a suboptimal solution for the design problem. Simulation results demonstrate the security benefits of integrating sensing into UAV communication systems.

MIMO-OFDM Dual-Functional Radar-Communication Systems: Low-PAPR Waveform Design

In this paper, we explore a dual-functional radar-communication (DFRC) system for achieving integrated sensing and communications (ISAC). The technique of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is leveraged to overcome the frequency-selective fading of the wideband multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with one multi-antenna DFRC base station (BS) and multiple single-antenna user equipment (UEs). In order to restrain the high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of OFDM signals, we aim to jointly design low-PAPR DFRC MIMO-OFDM waveforms. This is done by utilizing a weighted objective function on both communication and radar performance metrics under power and PAPR constraints. The formulated optimization problems can be equivalently transformed into standard semi-definite programming (SDP) and can be effectively solved by semi-definite relaxation (SDR) method, where we prove that globally optimal rank-1 solution can be obtained in general. We further develop a low-complexity method to solve the problems with much reduced overheads. Moreover, the practical scenario with oversampling on OFDM signals is further considered, which has a significant effect on the resulting PAPR levels. The feasibility, effectiveness, and flexibility of the proposed low- PAPR DFRC MIMO-OFDM waveform design methods are demonstrated by a range of simulations on communication sum rate, symbol error rate as well as radar beampattern and detection probability.

Detailed elemental abundances of binary stars: Searching for signatures of planet formation and atomic diffusion

Binary star systems are assumed to be co-natal and coeval, thus to have identical chemical composition. In this work we aim to test the hypothesis that there is a connection between observed element abundance patterns and the formation of planets using binary stars. Moreover, we also want to test how atomic diffusion might influence the observed abundance patterns. We conduct a strictly line-by-line differential chemical abundance analysis of 7 binary systems. Stellar atmospheric parameters and elemental abundances are obtained with extremely high precision (< 3.5%) using the high quality spectra from VLT/UVES and Keck/HIRES. We find that 4 of 7 binary systems show subtle abundance differences (0.01 - 0.03 dex) without clear correlations with the condensation temperature, including two planet-hosting pairs. The other 3 binary systems exhibit similar degree of abundance differences correlating with the condensation temperature. We do not find any clear relation between the abundance differences and the occurrence of known planets in our systems. Instead, the overall abundance offsets observed in the binary systems (4 of 7) could be due to the effects of atomic diffusion. Although giant planet formation does not necessarily imprint chemical signatures onto the host star, the differences in the observed abundance trends with condensation temperature, on the other hand, are likely associated with diverse histories of planet formation (e.g., formation location). Furthermore, we find a weak correlation between abundance differences and binary separation, which may provide a new constraint on the formation of binary systems.

Integrated Sensing and Communications: Towards Dual-functional Wireless Networks for 6G and Beyond

As the standardization of 5G is being solidified, researchers are speculating what 6G will be. Integrating sensing functionality is emerging as a key feature of the 6G Radio Access Network (RAN), allowing to exploit the dense cell infrastructure of 5G for constructing a perceptive network. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview on the background, range of key applications and state-of-the-art approaches of Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC). We commence by discussing the interplay between sensing and communications (S&C) from a historical point of view, and then consider multiple facets of ISAC and its performance gains. By introducing both ongoing and potential use cases, we shed light on industrial progress and standardization activities related to ISAC. We analyze a number of performance tradeoffs between S&C, spanning from information theoretical limits, tradeoffs in physical layer performance, to the tradeoff in cross-layer designs. Next, we discuss signal processing aspects of ISAC, namely ISAC waveform design and receive signal processing. As a step further, we provide our vision on the deeper integration between S&C within the framework of perceptive networks, where the two functionalities are expected to mutually assist each other, i.e., communication-assisted sensing and sensing-assisted communications. Finally, we summarize the paper by identifying the potential integration between ISAC and other emerging communication technologies, and their positive impact on the future of wireless networks.

A Review of Automated Diagnosis of COVID-19 Based on Scanning Images

The pandemic of COVID-19 has caused millions of infections, which has led to a great loss all over the world, socially and economically. Due to the false-negative rate and the time-consuming of the conventional Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) tests, diagnosing based on X-ray images and Computed Tomography (CT) images has been widely adopted. Therefore, researchers of the computer vision area have developed many automatic diagnosing models based on machine learning or deep learning to assist the radiologists and improve the diagnosing accuracy. In this paper, we present a review of these recently emerging automatic diagnosing models. 70 models proposed from February 14, 2020, to July 21, 2020, are involved. We analyzed the models from the perspective of preprocessing, feature extraction, classification, and evaluation. Based on the limitation of existing models, we pointed out that domain adaption in transfer learning and interpretability promotion would be the possible future directions.

Significant Wave Height Prediction based on Wavelet Graph Neural Network

Computational intelligence-based ocean characteristics forecasting applications, such as Significant Wave Height (SWH) prediction, are crucial for avoiding social and economic loss in coastal cities. Compared to the traditional empirical-based or numerical-based forecasting models, "soft computing" approaches, including machine learning and deep learning models, have shown numerous success in recent years. In this paper, we focus on enabling the deep learning model to learn both short-term and long-term spatial-temporal dependencies for SWH prediction. A Wavelet Graph Neural Network (WGNN) approach is proposed to integrate the advantages of wavelet transform and graph neural network. Several parallel graph neural networks are separately trained on wavelet decomposed data, and the reconstruction of each model's prediction forms the final SWH prediction. Experimental results show that the proposed WGNN approach outperforms other models, including the numerical models, the machine learning models, and several deep learning models.

Towards Multi-Functional 6G Wireless Networks: Integrating Sensing, Communication and Security

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has recently emerged as a candidate 6G technology, aiming to unify the two key operations of the future network in spectrum/energy/cost efficient way. ISAC involves communicating information to receivers and simultaneously sensing targets, while both operations use the same waveforms, the same transmitter and ultimately the same network infrastructure. Nevertheless, the inclusion of information signalling into the probing waveform for target sensing raises unique and difficult challenges from the perspective of information security. At the same time, the sensing capability incorporated in the ISAC transmission offers unique opportunities to design secure ISAC techniques. This overview paper discusses these unique challenges and opportunities for the next generation of ISAC networks. We first briefly discuss the fundamentals of waveform design for sensing and communication. Then, we detail the challenges and contradictory objectives involved in securing ISAC transmission, along with state-of-the-art approaches to address them. We then identify the new opportunity of using the sensing capability to obtain knowledge of the targets, as an enabling approach against known weaknesses of PHY security. Finally, we illustrate a low-cost secure ISAC architecture, followed by a series of open research topics. This family of sensing-aided secure ISAC techniques brings a new insight on providing information security, with an eye on robust and hardware-constrained designs tailored for low-cost ISAC devices.

Secure Dual-Functional Radar-Communication Transmission: Exploiting Interference for Resilience Against Target Eavesdropping

We study security solutions for dual-functional radar communication (DFRC) systems, which detect the radar target and communicate with downlink cellular users in millimeter-wave (mmWave) wireless networks simultaneously. Uniquely for such scenarios, the radar target is regarded as a potential eavesdropper which might surveil the information sent from the base station (BS) to communication users (CUs), that is carried by the radar probing signal. Transmit waveform and receive beamforming are jointly designed to maximize the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of the radar under the security and power budget constraints. We apply a Directional Modulation (DM) approach to exploit constructive interference (CI), where the known multiuser interference (MUI) can be exploited as a source of useful signal. Moreover, to further deteriorate the eavesdropping signal at the radar target, we utilize destructive interference (DI) by pushing the received symbols at the target towards the destructive region of the signal constellation. Our numerical results verify the effectiveness of the proposed design showing a secure transmission with enhanced performance against benchmark DFRC techniques.

Long-term Cross Adversarial Training: A Robust Meta-learning Method for Few-shot Classification Tasks

Meta-learning model can quickly adapt to new tasks using few-shot labeled data. However, despite achieving good generalization on few-shot classification tasks, it is still challenging to improve the adversarial robustness of the meta-learning model in few-shot learning. Although adversarial training (AT) methods such as Adversarial Query (AQ) can improve the adversarially robust performance of meta-learning models, AT is still computationally expensive training. On the other hand, meta-learning models trained with AT will drop significant accuracy on the original clean images. This paper proposed a meta-learning method on the adversarially robust neural network called Long-term Cross Adversarial Training (LCAT). LCAT will update meta-learning model parameters cross along the natural and adversarial sample distribution direction with long-term to improve both adversarial and clean few-shot classification accuracy. Due to cross-adversarial training, LCAT only needs half of the adversarial training epoch than AQ, resulting in a low adversarial training computation. Experiment results show that LCAT achieves superior performance both on the clean and adversarial few-shot classification accuracy than SOTA adversarial training methods for meta-learning models.

Integrating Sensing and Communications for Ubiquitous IoT: Applications, Trends and Challenges

Recent advances in wireless communication and solid-state circuits together with the enormous demands of sensing ability have given rise to a new enabling technology, integrated sensing and communications (ISAC). The ISAC captures two main advantages over dedicated sensing and communication functionalities: 1) Integration gain to efficiently utilize congested resources, and even, 2) Coordination gain to balance dual-functional performance or/and perform mutual assistance. Meanwhile, triggered by ISAC, we are also witnessing a paradigm shift in the ubiquitous IoT architecture, in which the sensing and communication layers are tending to converge into a new layer, namely, the signaling layer. In this paper, we first attempt to introduce a definition of ISAC, analyze the various influencing forces, and present several novel use cases. Then, we complement the understanding of the signaling layer by presenting several key benefits in the IoT era. We classify existing dominant ISAC solutions based on the layers in which integration is applied. Finally, several challenges and opportunities are discussed. We hope that this overview article will serve as a primary starting point for new researchers and offer a bird's-eye view of the existing ISAC-related advances from academia and industry, ranging from solid-state circuitry, signal processing, and wireless communication to mobile computing.

By leveraging a combination of softmax neural networks, the proposed solution is able to achieve a desirable beampattern with high accuracy.

The ensemble of chemical element abundance measurements for stars, along with precision distances and orbit properties, provides high-dimensional data to study the evolution of the Milky Way. With this third data release of the Galactic Archaeology with HERMES (GALAH) survey, we publish 678 423 spectra for 588 571 mostly nearby stars (81.2% of stars are within <2 kpc), observed with the HERMES spectrograph at the Anglo-Australian Telescope. This release (hereafter GALAH+ DR3) includes all observations from GALAH Phase 1 (bright, main, and faint survey, 70%), K2-HERMES (17%), TESS-HERMES (5%), and a subset of ancillary observations (8%) including the bulge and >75 stellar clusters. We derive stellar parameters $T_\text{eff}$, $\log g$, [Fe/H], $v_\text{mic}$, $v_\text{broad}$ & $v_\text{rad}$ using our modified version of the spectrum synthesis code Spectroscopy Made Easy (SME) and 1D MARCS model atmospheres. We break spectroscopic degeneracies in our spectrum analysis with astrometry from $Gaia$ DR2 and photometry from 2MASS. We report abundance ratios [X/Fe] for 30 different elements (11 of which are based on non-LTE computations) covering five nucleosynthetic pathways. We describe validations for accuracy and precision, flagging of peculiar stars/measurements and recommendations for using our results. Our catalogue comprises 65% dwarfs, 34% giants, and 1% other/unclassified stars. Based on unflagged chemical composition and age, we find 62% young low-$α$, 9% young high-$α$, 27% old high-$α$, and 2% stars with $\mathrm{[Fe/H]} \leq -1$. Based on kinematics, 4% are halo stars. Several Value-Added-Catalogues, including stellar ages and dynamics, updated after $Gaia$ eDR3, accompany this release and allow chrono-chemodynamic analyses, as we showcase.

Hardware Efficient Joint Radar-Communications with Hybrid Precoding and RF Chain Optimization

In this paper, we aim to achieve energy efficient design with minimum hardware requirement for hybrid precoding, which enables a large number of antennas with minimal number of RF chains, and sub-arrayed multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar based joint radar-communication (JRC) systems. A dynamic active RF chain selection mechanism is implemented in the baseband processing and the energy efficiency (EE) maximization problem is solved using fractional programming to obtain the optimal number of RF chains at the current channel state. Subsequently hybrid precoders are computed employing a sub-arrayed MIMO structure for EE maximization with weighted formulation of the communication and radar metrics, and the solution is based on alternating minimization. The simulation results show that the proposed method with minimum hardware achieves the best EE while maintaining the rate performance, and an efficient trade-off between sensing and communication.
