Nonperturbative Renormalization Group for the Landau-de Gennes Model

We studied the nematic isotropic phase transition by applying the functional renormalization group to the Landau-de Gennes model. We derived the flow equations for the effective potential as well as the cubic and quartic "couplings" and the anomalous dimension. We then solved the coupled flow equations on a grid using Newton Raphson method. A first order phase transition is observed. We also investigated the nematic isotropic puzzle (the NI puzzle) in this paper. We obtained the NI transition temperature difference ${T_c-T^*}=5.85K$ with sizable improvement over previous results.

A Class of Iterative Solvers for the Helmholtz Equation: Factorizations, Sweeping Preconditioners, Source Transfer, Single Layer Potentials, Polarized Traces, and Optimized Schwarz Methods

Solving time-harmonic wave propagation problems by iterative methods is a difficult task, and over the last two decades, an important research effort has gone into developing preconditioners for the simplest representative of such wave propagation problems, the Helmholtz equation. A specific class of these new preconditioners are considered here. They were developed by researchers with various backgrounds using formulations and notations that are very different, and all are among the most promising preconditioners for the Helmholtz equation. The goal of the present manuscript is to show that this class of preconditioners are based on a common mathematical principle, and they can all be formulated in the context of domain decomposition methods called optimized Schwarz methods. This common formulation allows us to explain in detail how and why all these methods work. The domain decomposition formulation also allows us to avoid technicalities in the implementation description we give of these recent methods. The equivalence of these methods with optimized Schwarz methods translates at the discrete level into equivalence with approximate block LU decomposition preconditioners, and we give in each case the algebraic version, including a detailed description of the approximations used. While we chose to use the Helmholtz equation for which these methods were developed, our notation is completely general and the algorithms we give are written for an arbitrary second order elliptic operator. The algebraic versions are even more general, assuming only a connectivity pattern in the discretization matrix.

The Profiles of Fe Kα Line From the Inhomogeneous Accretion Flow

The clumpy disc, or inhomogeneous accretion flow, has been proposed to explain the properties of accreting black hole systems. However, the observational evidences remain to be explored. In this work, we calculate the profiles of Fe Kα lines emitted from the inhomogeneous accretion flow through the ray-tracing technique, in order to find possible observable signals of the clumps. Compared with the skewed doublepeaked profile of the continuous standard accretion disc, the lines show a multi-peak structure when the emissivity index is not very steep. The peaks and wings are affected by the position and size of the cold clumps. When the clump is small and is located in the innermost region, due to the significant gravitational redshift, the blue wing can overlap with the red wing of the outer cold disc/clump, forming a fake peak or greatly enhancing the red peak. Given high enough resolution, it is easier to constrain the clumps around the supermassive black holes than the clumps in stellar mass black holes due to the thermal Doppler effect.

Structure Re-determination and Superconductivity Observation of Bulk 1T MoS2

2H MoS2 has been intensively studied because of layer-dependent electronic structures and novel physical properties. Though the metastable 1T MoS2 with the [MoS6] octahedron was observed from the microscopic area, the true crystal structure of 1T phase has not been determined strictly. Moreover, the true physical properties have not been demonstrated from experiments due to the challenge for the preparation of pure 1T MoS2 crystals. Here, we successfully synthesized the 1T MoS2 single crystals and re-determined the crystal structure of 1T MoS2 from single-crystal X-ray diffraction. 1T MoS2 crystalizes in space group P-3m1 with a cell of a = b = 3.190(3) Å and c = 5.945(6) Å. The individual MoS2 layer consists of MoS6 octahedron sharing edge with each other. More surprisingly, the bulk 1T MoS2 crystals undergo a superconducting transition of Tc = 4 K, which is the first observation of superconductivity in pure 1T MoS2 phase.

Functional renormalization group study of the Quark-Meson model with $ω$ meson

We study the phase diagram of two-flavor massless QCD at finite baryon density by applying the functional renormalization group (FRG) for a quark-meson model with $σ, π$, and $ω$ mesons. The dynamical fluctuations of quarks, $σ$, and $π$ are included into the flow equations, while the amplitudes of $ω$-fields are also allowed to fluctuate. At high temperature the effects of the $ω$-field on the phase boundary are qualitatively similar to the mean-field calculations; the phase boundary is shifted to the higher chemical potential region. As the temperature is lowered, however, the transition line bends back to the lower chemical potential region, irrespective to the strength of the vector coupling. In our FRG calculations, the driving force of the low temperature first order line is the fluctuations rather the quark density, and the effects of $ω$-fields have little impact. At low temperature, the effective potential at small $σ$ field is very sensitive to the infrared cutoff scale, and this significantly affects our determination of the phase boundaries. The critical chemical potential at the tricritical point is affected by the $ω$-field effects but its critical temperature stays around the similar value. Some caveats are given in interpreting our model results.

Inertial Proximal Incremental Aggregated Gradient Method

In this paper, we introduce an inertial version of the Proximal Incremental Aggregated Gradient method (PIAG) for minimizing the sum of smooth convex component functions and a possibly nonsmooth convex regularization function. Theoretically, we show that the inertial Proximal Incremental Aggregated Gradiend (iPIAG) method enjoys a global linear convergence under a quadratic growth condition, which is strictly weaker than strong convexity, provided that the stepsize is not larger than a constant. Moreover, we present two numerical expreiments which demonstrate that iPIAG outperforms the original PIAG.

Transiting Exoplanet Monitoring Project (TEMP). III. On the Relocation of the Kepler-9~b Transit

The Kepler-9 system harbors three known transiting planets. The system holds significant interest for several reasons. First, the outer two planets exhibit a period ratio that is close to a 2:1 orbital commensurability, with attendant dynamical consequences. Second, both planets lie in the planetary mass "desert" that is generally associated with the rapid gas agglomeration phase of the core accretion process. Third, there exist attractive prospects for accurately measuring both the sky-projected stellar spin-orbit angles as well as the mutual orbital inclination between the planets in the system. Following the original \textit{Kepler} detection announcement in 2010, the initially reported orbital ephemerides for Kepler-9~b and c have degraded significantly, due to the limited time base-line of observations on which the discovery of the system rested. Here, we report new ground-based photometric observations and extensive dynamical modeling of the system. These efforts allow us to photometrically recover the transit of Kepler-9~b, and thereby greatly improve the predictions for upcoming transit mid-times. Accurate ephemerides of this system are important in order to confidently schedule follow-up observations of this system, for both in-transit Doppler measurements as well as for atmospheric transmission spectra taken during transit.

In situ annealing effects on the iron-based ladder material BaFe_2S_3: A route to improve the crystal quality

We have grown single crystals of the iron-based ladder material BaFe_2S_3, which is superconductive under high pressure, adopting different conditions. By comparing the behaviors of these samples, it is found that the in situ annealing process can affect the crystal structure and the electrical transport, enhance the antiferromagnetic transition temperature, and reduce the extrinsic ferromagnetic component of the system. An in-depth analysis indicates that the crystal quality is improved by the in situ annealing in terms of reducing both the Fe deficiency and the Fe impurity in the samples. The improvement of the sample quality will facilitate the investigations on the intrinsic properties of this material.

Chiral phase transition in linear sigma model with non-extensive statistical mechanics

From the non-extensive statistical mechanics, we investigate the chiral phase transition at finite temperature $T$ and baryon chemical potential $μ_B$ in the framework of the linear sigma model. The corresponding non-extensive distribution, based on Tsallis' statistics, is characterized by a dimensionless non-extensive parameter, $q$, and the results in the usual Boltzmann-Gibbs case are recovered when $q\to 1$. The thermodynamics of the linear sigma model and its correspodning phase diagram are analysed. At high temperature region, the critical temperature $T_c$ is shown to decrease with increasing $q$ from the phase diagram in the $(T,~μ)$ plane. However, larger values of $q$ causes the rise of $T_c$ at low temperature but high chemical potential. Moreover, it is found that $μ$ different from zero corresponds to a first-order phase transition while $μ=0$ to a crossover one. The critical endpoint (CEP) carries higher chemical potential but lower temperature with $q$ increasing due to the non-extensive effects.

Optical Observations of LIGO Source GW 170817 by the Antarctic Survey Telescopes at Dome A, Antarctica

The LIGO detection of gravitational waves (GW) from merging black holes in 2015 marked the beginning of a new era in observational astronomy. The detection of an electromagnetic signal from a GW source is the critical next step to explore in detail the physics involved. The Antarctic Survey Telescopes (AST3), located at Dome A, Antarctica, is uniquely situated for rapid response time-domain astronomy with its continuous night-time coverage during the austral winter. We report optical observations of the GW source (GW~170817) in the nearby galaxy NGC 4993 using AST3. The data show a rapidly fading transient at around 1 day after the GW trigger, with the $i$-band magnitude declining from $17.23\pm0.13$ magnitude to $17.72\pm0.09$ magnitude in $\sim 1.8$ hour. The brightness and time evolution of the optical transient associated with GW~170817 are broadly consistent with the predictions of models involving merging binary neutron stars. We infer from our data that the merging process ejected about $\sim 10^{-2}$ solar mass of radioactive material at a speed of up to $30\%$ the speed of light.

Second Order, linear and unconditionally energy stable schemes for a hydrodynamic model of Smectic-A Liquid Crystals

In this paper, we consider the numerical approximations for a hydrodynamical model of smectic-A liquid crystals. The model, derived from the variational approach of the modified Oseen-Frank energy, is a highly nonlinear system that couples the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and a constitutive equation for the layer variable. We develop two linear, second-order time-marching schemes based on the "Invariant Energy Quadratization" method for nonlinear terms in the constitutive equation, the projection method for the Navier-Stokes equations, and some subtle implicit-explicit treatments for the convective and stress terms. Moreover, we prove the well-posedness of the linear system and their unconditionally energy stabilities rigorously. Various numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the stability and the accuracy of the numerical schemes in simulating the dynamics under shear flow and the magnetic field.

High efficiently numerical simulation of the TDGL equation with reticular free energy in hydrogel

In this paper, we focus on the numerical simulation of phase separation about macromolecule microsphere composite (MMC) hydrogel. The model equation is based on Time-Dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) equation with reticular free energy. We have put forward two $L^2$ stable schemes to simulate simplified TDGL equation. In numerical experiments, we observe that simulating the whole process of phase separation requires a considerably long time. We also notice that the total free energy changes significantly in initial time and varies slightly in the following time. Based on these properties, we introduce an adaptive strategy based on one of stable scheme mentioned. It is found that the introduction of the time adaptivity cannot only resolve the dynamical changes of the solution accurately but also can significantly save CPU time for the long time simulation.

How To Identify Plasmons from the Optical Response of Nanostructures

A promising trend in plasmonics involves shrinking the size of plasmon-supporting structures down to a few nanometers, thus enabling control over light-matter interaction at extreme-subwavelength scales. In this limit, quantum mechanical effects, such as nonlocal screening and size quantization, strongly affect the plasmonic response, rendering it substantially different from classical predictions. For very small clusters and molecules, collective plasmonic modes are hard to distinguish from other excitations such as single-electron transitions. Using rigorous quantum mechanical computational techniques for a wide variety of physical systems, we describe how an optical resonance of a nanostructure can be classified as either plasmonic or nonplasmonic. More precisely, we define a universal metric for such classification, the generalized plasmonicity index (GPI), which can be straightforwardly implemented in any computational electronic-structure method or classical electromagnetic approach to discriminate plasmons from single-particle excitations and photonic modes. Using the GPI, we investigate the plasmonicity of optical resonances in a wide range of systems including: the emergence of plasmonic behavior in small jellium spheres as the size and the number of electrons increase; atomic-scale metallic clusters as a function of the number of atoms; and nanostructured graphene as a function of size and doping down to the molecular plasmons in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Our study provides a rigorous foundation for the further development of ultrasmall nanostructures based on molecular plasmonics

Integrated Speech Enhancement Method Based on Weighted Prediction Error and DNN for Dereverberation and Denoising

Both reverberation and additive noises degrade the speech quality and intelligibility. Weighted prediction error (WPE) method performs well on the dereverberation but with limitations. First, WPE doesn't consider the influence of the additive noise which degrades the performance of dereverberation. Second, it relies on a time-consuming iterative process, and there is no guarantee or a widely accepted criterion on its convergence. In this paper, we integrate deep neural network (DNN) into WPE for dereverberation and denoising. DNN is used to suppress the background noise to meet the noise-free assumption of WPE. Meanwhile, DNN is applied to directly predict spectral variance of the target speech to make the WPE work without iteration. The experimental results show that the proposed method has a significant improvement in speech quality and runs fast.

Multitude of phases in correlated lattice fermion systems with spin-dependent disorder

The magnetic phases induced by the interplay between disorder acting only on particles with a given spin projection ("spin-dependent disorder") and a local repulsive interaction is explored. To this end the magnetic ground state phase diagram of the Hubbard model at half-filling is computed within dynamical mean-field theory combined with the geometric average over disorder, which is able to describe Anderson localization. Five distinct phases are identified: a ferromagnetically polarized metal, two types of insulators, and two types of spin-selective localized phases. The latter four phases possess different long-range order of the spins. The predicted phase diagram may be tested experimentally using cold fermions in optical lattices subject to spin-dependent random potentials.

Gross beta determination using a scintillating fiber array detector for drinking water

A scintillating fiber array measurement system for gross beta is developed to achieve real-time monitoring of radioactivity in drinking water. The detector consists of 1,096 scintillating fibers, both sides of the fibers connect to a photomultiplier tube, and they are placed in a stainless steel tank. The detector parameters of working voltage, background counting rate and stability of the detector were tested, and the detection efficiency was calibrated using a standard solution of potassium chloride. Through experiment, the background counting rate of the detector is 38.31 cps and the detection efficiency for $β$ particles is 0.37 cps per Bq per liter; the detector can reach its detection limit of 1.0 Bq per liter for $β$ particles within 100 minutes without pre-concentration.

Aluminum Nanoparticles with Hot Spots for Plasmon-Induced Circular Dichroism of Chiral Molecules in the UV Spectral Interval

Plasmonic nanocrystals with hot spots are able to localize optical energy in small spaces. In such physical systems, near-field interactions between molecules and plasmons can become especially strong. This paper considers the case of a nanoparticle dimer and a chiral biomolecule. In our model, a chiral molecule is placed in the gap between two plasmonic nanoparticles, where the electromagnetic hot spot occurs. Since many important biomolecules have optical transitions in the UV, we consider the case of Aluminum nanoparticles, as they offer strong electromagnetic enhancements in the blue and UV spectral intervals. Our calculations show that the complex composed of a chiral molecule and an Al-dimer exhibits strong CD signals in the plasmonic spectral region. In contrast to the standard Au- and Ag-nanocrystals, the Al system may have a much better spectral overlap between the typical biomolecule's optical transitions and the nanocrystals' plasmonic band. Overall, we found that Al nanocrystals used as CD antennas exhibit unique properties as compared to other commonly studied plasmonic and dielectric materials. The plasmonic systems investigated in this study can be potentially used for sensing chirality of biomolecules, which is of interest in applications such as drug development.

Decoupled, Energy Stable Scheme for Hydrodynamic Allen-Cahn Phase Field Moving Contact Line Model

In this paper, we present an efficient energy stable scheme to solve a phase field model incorporating contact line condition. Instead of the usually used Cahn-Hilliard type phase equation, we adopt the Allen-Cahn type phase field model with the static contact line boundary condition that coupled with incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with Navier boundary condition. The projection method is used to deal with the Navier-Stokes equa- tions and an auxiliary function is introduced for the non-convex Ginzburg-Landau bulk potential. We show that the scheme is linear, decoupled and energy stable. Moreover, we prove that fully discrete scheme is also energy stable. An efficient finite element spatial discretization method is implemented to verify the accuracy and efficiency of proposed schemes. Numerical results show that the proposed scheme is very efficient and accurate
