Interlayer Topological Transport and Devices based on Layer Pseudospins in Photonic Valley-Hall Phases

Valley-Hall phases, first proposed in two-dimensional (2D) materials, originate from nontrivial topologies around valleys which denote local extrema in momentum space. Since they are extended into classical systems, their designs draw inspirations from existing quantum counterparts, and their transports show similar topological protections. In contrast, it is recently established in acoustics that layer pseudospins in valley-Hall phases can give rise to special valley-Hall edge states with fundamentally different transport behaviors at the interfaces compared with various 2D materials. Their realization in other classical systems, such as photonics, would allow us to design topological insulators beyond quantum inspirations. In this work, we show that layer pseudospins exist in photonic valley-Hall phases, using vertically coupled designer surface plasmon crystals, a non-radiative system in open environment supporting tightly-confined propagating modes. The negligible thermal and radiative losses in our structure pave the way for our direct observations of the layer pseudospins and associated topological phenomena stemmed from them in both real and reciprocal spaces. Photonic devices that manipulate signals based on layer pseudospins of the topological phases, such as layer convertors and layer-selected delay lines, are experimentally demonstrated, confirming the potential applications of layer pseudospins as a new degree of freedom carrying information.

Effective and efficient ROI-wise visual encoding using an end-to-end CNN regression model and selective optimization

Recently, visual encoding based on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have realized many achievements with the rapid development of deep network computation. Visual encoding model is aimed at predicting brain activity in response to presented image stimuli. Currently, visual encoding is accomplished mainly by firstly extracting image features through convolutional neural network (CNN) model pre-trained on computer vision task, and secondly training a linear regression model to map specific layer of CNN features to each voxel, namely voxel-wise encoding. However, the two-step manner model, essentially, is hard to determine which kind of well features are well linearly matched for beforehand unknown fMRI data with little understanding of human visual representation. Analogizing computer vision mostly related human vision, we proposed the end-to-end convolution regression model (ETECRM) in the region of interest (ROI)-wise manner to accomplish effective and efficient visual encoding. The end-to-end manner was introduced to make the model automatically learn better matching features to improve encoding performance. The ROI-wise manner was used to improve the encoding efficiency for many voxels. In addition, we designed the selective optimization including self-adapting weight learning and weighted correlation loss, noise regularization to avoid interfering of ineffective voxels in ROI-wise encoding. Experiment demonstrated that the proposed model obtained better predicting accuracy than the two-step manner of encoding models. Comparative analysis implied that end-to-end manner and large volume of fMRI data may drive the future development of visual encoding.

What Do People See in a Twenty-Second Glimpse of Bivariate Vector Field Visualizations?

Little is known about how people learn from a brief glimpse of three-dimensional (3D) bivariate vector field visualizations and about how well visual features can guide behavior. Here we report empirical study results on the use of color, texture, and length to guide viewing of bivariate glyphs: these three visual features are mapped to the first integer variable (v1) and length to the second quantitative variable (v2). Participants performed two tasks within 20 seconds: (1) MAX: find the largest v2 when v1 is fixed; (2) SEARCH: find a specific bivariate variable shown on the screen in a vector field. Our first study with eighteen participants performing these tasks showed that the randomized vector positions, although they lessened viewers' ability to group vectors, did not reduce task accuracy compared to structured vector fields. This result may support that these color, texture, and length can provide to a certain degree, guide viewers' attention to task-relevant regions. The second study measured eye movement to quantify viewers' behaviors with three-errors (scanning, recognition, and decision errors) and one-behavior (refixation) metrics. Our results showed two dominant search strategies: drilling and scanning. Coloring tended to restrict eye movement to the task-relevant regions of interest, enabling drilling. Length tended to support scanners who quickly wandered around at different v1 levels. Drillers had significantly less errors than scanners and the error rates for color and texture were also lowest. And length had limited discrimination power than color and texture as a 3D visual guidance. Our experiment results may suggest that using categorical visual feature could help obtain the global structure of a vector field visualization. We provide the first benchmark of the attention cost of seeing a bivariate vector on average about 5 items per second.

Picturing Bivariate Separable-Features for Univariate Vector Magnitudes in Large-Magnitude-Range Quantum Physics Data

We present study results from two experiments to empirically validate that separable bivariate pairs for univariate representations of large-magnitude-range vectors are more efficient than integral pairs. The first experiment with 20 participants compared: one integral pair, three separable pairs, and one redundant pair, which is a mix of the integral and separable features. Participants performed three local tasks requiring reading numerical values, estimating ratio, and comparing two points. The second 18-participant study compared three separable pairs using three global tasks when participants must look at the entire field to get an answer: find a specific target in 20 seconds, find the maximum magnitude in 20 seconds, and estimate the total number of vector exponents within 2 seconds. Our results also reveal the following: separable pairs led to the most accurate answers and the shortest task execution time, while integral dimensions were among the least accurate; it achieved high performance only when a pop-out separable feature (here color) was added. To reconcile this finding with the existing literature, our second experiment suggests that the higher the separability, the higher the accuracy; the reason is probably that the emergent global scene created by the separable pairs reduces the subsequent search space.

Cycle-Consistent Adversarial GAN: the integration of adversarial attack and defense

In image classification of deep learning, adversarial examples where inputs intended to add small magnitude perturbations may mislead deep neural networks (DNNs) to incorrect results, which means DNNs are vulnerable to them. Different attack and defense strategies have been proposed to better research the mechanism of deep learning. However, those research in these networks are only for one aspect, either an attack or a defense, not considering that attacks and defenses should be interdependent and mutually reinforcing, just like the relationship between spears and shields. In this paper, we propose Cycle-Consistent Adversarial GAN (CycleAdvGAN) to generate adversarial examples, which can learn and approximate the distribution of original instances and adversarial examples. For CycleAdvGAN, once the Generator and are trained, can generate adversarial perturbations efficiently for any instance, so as to make DNNs predict wrong, and recovery adversarial examples to clean instances, so as to make DNNs predict correct. We apply CycleAdvGAN under semi-white box and black-box settings on two public datasets MNIST and CIFAR10. Using the extensive experiments, we show that our method has achieved the state-of-the-art adversarial attack method and also efficiently improve the defense ability, which make the integration of adversarial attack and defense come true. In additional, it has improved attack effect only trained on the adversarial dataset generated by any kind of adversarial attack.

Auto-Embedding Generative Adversarial Networks for High Resolution Image Synthesis

Generating images via the generative adversarial network (GAN) has attracted much attention recently. However, most of the existing GAN-based methods can only produce low-resolution images of limited quality. Directly generating high-resolution images using GANs is nontrivial, and often produces problematic images with incomplete objects. To address this issue, we develop a novel GAN called Auto-Embedding Generative Adversarial Network (AEGAN), which simultaneously encodes the global structure features and captures the fine-grained details. In our network, we use an autoencoder to learn the intrinsic high-level structure of real images and design a novel denoiser network to provide photo-realistic details for the generated images. In the experiments, we are able to produce 512x512 images of promising quality directly from the input noise. The resultant images exhibit better perceptual photo-realism, i.e., with sharper structure and richer details, than other baselines on several datasets, including Oxford-102 Flowers, Caltech-UCSD Birds (CUB), High-Quality Large-scale CelebFaces Attributes (CelebA-HQ), Large-scale Scene Understanding (LSUN) and ImageNet.

Category decoding of visual stimuli from human brain activity using a bidirectional recurrent neural network to simulate bidirectional information flows in human visual cortices

Recently, visual encoding and decoding based on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have realized many achievements with the rapid development of deep network computation. Despite the hierarchically similar representations of deep network and human vision, visual information flows from primary visual cortices to high visual cortices and vice versa based on the bottom-up and top-down manners, respectively. Inspired by the bidirectional information flows, we proposed a bidirectional recurrent neural network (BRNN)-based method to decode the categories from fMRI data. The forward and backward directions in the BRNN module characterized the bottom-up and top-down manners, respectively. The proposed method regarded the selected voxels of each visual cortex region (V1, V2, V3, V4, and LO) as one node in the sequence fed into the BRNN module and combined the output of the BRNN module to decode the categories with the subsequent fully connected layer. This new method allows the efficient utilization of hierarchical information representations and bidirectional information flows in human visual cortices. Experiment results demonstrated that our method improved the accuracy of three-level category decoding than other methods, which implicitly validated the hierarchical and bidirectional human visual representations. Comparative analysis revealed that the category representations of human visual cortices were hierarchical, distributed, complementary, and correlative.

A 16-pixel NbN nanowire single photon detector coupled with 300 micrometer fiber

Niobium Nitride (NbN) nanowire is the most popular detection material of superconducting nanowire single photon detectors (SNSPDs) for high repetition rate and high efficiency. However, it has been assumed to be difficult for fabricating SNSPDs with arrays over large area, which are critical components of quantum imaging, linear optical quantum computing, satellite laser ranging, and high-speed quantum key distribution. This paper reported a 4*4 pixel NbN SNSPDs array with an equivalent receiving aperture of 300 micrometer associated with beam compression technology, which is the first NbN SNSPD coupled by 300 micrometer fiber according to our knowledge. The designed pixel was compact with a filling factor of 98.5%, resulting in a high quantum efficiency of 94.5%, a system efficiency of 46% for photons coupled from 300 micrometer fiber without optimizing polarization, and a system time resolution of 92 ps. This work demonstrates the feasibility of a large SNSPDs array, and paves the way for developing efficient photon camera with NbN nanowires.

Measuring the Effects of Scalar and Spherical Colormaps on Ensembles of DMRI Tubes

We report empirical study results on the color encoding of ensemble scalar and orientation to visualize diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (DMRI) tubes. The experiment tested six scalar colormaps for average fractional anisotropy (FA) tasks (grayscale, blackbody, diverging, isoluminant-rainbow, extended-blackbody, and coolwarm) and four three-dimensional (3D) directional encodings for tract tracing tasks (uniform gray, absolute, eigenmap, and Boy's surface embedding). We found that extended-blackbody, coolwarm, and blackbody remain the best three approaches for identifying ensemble average in 3D. Isoluminant-rainbow coloring led to the same ensemble mean accuracy as other colormaps. However, more than 50% of the answers consistently had higher estimates of the ensemble average, independent of the mean values. Hue, not luminance, influences ensemble estimates of mean values. For ensemble orientation-tracing tasks, we found that the Boy's surface embedding (greatest spatial resolution and contrast) and absolute color (lowest spatial resolution and contrast) schemes led to more accurate answers than the eigenmaps scheme (medium resolution and contrast), acting as the uncanny-valley phenomenon of visualization design in terms of accuracy.

Dual Reconstruction Nets for Image Super-Resolution with Gradient Sensitive Loss

Deep neural networks have exhibited promising performance in image super-resolution (SR) due to the power in learning the non-linear mapping from low-resolution (LR) images to high-resolution (HR) images. However, most deep learning methods employ feed-forward architectures, and thus the dependencies between LR and HR images are not fully exploited, leading to limited learning performance. Moreover, most deep learning based SR methods apply the pixel-wise reconstruction error as the loss, which, however, may fail to capture high-frequency information and produce perceptually unsatisfying results, whilst the recent perceptual loss relies on some pre-trained deep model and they may not generalize well. In this paper, we introduce a mask to separate the image into low- and high-frequency parts based on image gradient magnitude, and then devise a gradient sensitive loss to well capture the structures in the image without sacrificing the recovery of low-frequency content. Moreover, by investigating the duality in SR, we develop a dual reconstruction network (DRN) to improve the SR performance. We provide theoretical analysis on the generalization performance of our method and demonstrate its effectiveness and superiority with thorough experiments.

Surpassing the Ambient Packing Limit of Energetic Crystals: Squeezing Effect of Molecular Level "Net-fishing"

High energy density is always a key goal for developments of energy storage or energetic materials (EMs). Except exploring novel EMs with high chemical energy, it is also desirable if the traditional EMs could be assembled at a higher density. However, it is very difficult to surpass their theoretical maximum molecular packing density under ambient conditions, even though a higher density could be achieved under ultra-high pressure (Gigapascals). Such solid-state phase changes are reversible, and hence this high density packing is not able to maintain under ambient conditions. Alternatively, in this research, we demonstrated a molecular level compression effect by stacking of 2-D TAGP, resulting in a higher density packing of the HMX molecules with changed conformation. The HMX crystal formed under compression in the solvent has a unit cell parameter very close to the reported one observed under pressure of 0.2 GPa. It shows that the compressed HMX molecules are trapped in the TAGP layers, resulting in a higher density (e.g. 2.13 g cm-3) and also higher heat of formation. The resulted HMX crystals are free of defects, and unlike the pristine HMX, no polymorphic transition and melting point were observed upon heating. Experiments and relevant calculations show that the best resulted hybrid HMX crystal has a detonation velocity of 10.40 km s-1 and pressure of 53.9 GPa, respectively. Its ground specific impulse reaches about 292 s, even much better than CL-20, making it a promising propellant component for future space explorations.

Toward A Deep Understanding of What Makes a Scientific Visualization Memorable

We report results from a preliminary study exploring the memorability of spatial scientific visualizations, the goal of which is to understand the visual features that contribute to memorability. The evaluation metrics include three objective measures (entropy, feature congestion, the number of edges), four subjective ratings (clutter, the number of distinct colors, familiarity, and realism), and two sentiment ratings (interestingness and happiness). We curate 1142 scientific visualization (SciVis) images from the original 2231 images in published IEEE SciVis papers from 2008 to 2017 and compute memorability scores of 228 SciVis images from data collected on Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk). Results showed that the memorability of SciVis images is mostly correlated with clutter and the number of distinct colors. We further investigate the differences between scientific visualization and infographics as a means to understand memorability differences by data attributes.

Pressure induced superconductivity bordering a charge-density-wave state in NbTe4 with strong spinorbit coupling

Transition-metal chalcogenides host various phases of matter, such as charge-density wave (CDW), superconductors, and topological insulators or semimetals. Superconductivity and its competition with CDW in low-dimensional compounds have attracted much interest and stimulated considerable research. Here we report pressure induced superconductivity in a strong spin-orbit (SO) coupled quasi-one-dimensional (1D) transition-metal chalcogenide NbTe$_4$, which is a CDW material under ambient pressure. With increasing pressure, the CDW transition temperature is gradually suppressed, and superconducting transition, which is fingerprinted by a steep resistivity drop, emerges at pressures above 12.4 GPa. Under pressure $p$ = 69 GPa, zero resistance is detected with a transition temperature $T_c$ = 2.2 K and an upper critical field $H_{c2}$= 2 T. We also find large magnetoresistance (MR) up to 102\% at low temperatures, which is a distinct feature differentiating NbTe$_4$ from other conventional CDW materials.

Cognitive Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access with Cooperative Relaying: A New Wireless Frontier for 5G Spectrum Sharing

Two emerging technologies towards 5G wireless networks, namely non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and cognitive radio (CR), will provide more efficient utilization of wireless spectrum in the future. In this article, we investigate the integration of NOMA with CR into a holistic system, namely cognitive NOMA network, for more intelligent spectrum sharing. Design principles of cognitive NOMA networks are perfectly aligned to functionality requirements of 5G wireless networks, such as high spectrum efficiency, massive connectivity, low latency, and better fairness. Three different cognitive NOMA architectures are presented, including underlay NOMA networks, overlay NOMA networks, and CR-inspired NOMA networks. To address inter- and intra-network interference which largely degrade the performance of cognitive NOMA networks, cooperative relaying strategies are proposed. For each cognitive NOMA architecture, our proposed cooperative relaying strategy shows its potential to significantly lower outage probabilities. Furthermore, we discuss open challenges and future research directions on implementation of cognitive NOMA networks.

Accurate reconstruction of image stimuli from human fMRI based on the decoding model with capsule network architecture

In neuroscience, all kinds of computation models were designed to answer the open question of how sensory stimuli are encoded by neurons and conversely, how sensory stimuli can be decoded from neuronal activities. Especially, functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) studies have made many great achievements with the rapid development of the deep network computation. However, comparing with the goal of decoding orientation, position and object category from activities in visual cortex, accurate reconstruction of image stimuli from human fMRI is a still challenging work. In this paper, the capsule network (CapsNet) architecture based visual reconstruction (CNAVR) method is developed to reconstruct image stimuli. The capsule means containing a group of neurons to perform the better organization of feature structure and representation, inspired by the structure of cortical mini column including several hundred neurons in primates. The high-level capsule features in the CapsNet includes diverse features of image stimuli such as semantic class, orientation, location and so on. We used these features to bridge between human fMRI and image stimuli. We firstly employed the CapsNet to train the nonlinear mapping from image stimuli to high-level capsule features, and from high-level capsule features to image stimuli again in an end-to-end manner. After estimating the serviceability of each voxel by encoding performance to accomplish the selecting of voxels, we secondly trained the nonlinear mapping from dimension-decreasing fMRI data to high-level capsule features. Finally, we can predict the high-level capsule features with fMRI data, and reconstruct image stimuli with the CapsNet. We evaluated the proposed CNAVR method on the dataset of handwritten digital images, and exceeded about 10% than the accuracy of all existing state-of-the-art methods on the structural similarity index (SSIM).

Overlaying Quantitative Measurement on Networks: An Evaluation of Three Positioning and Nine Visual Marker Techniques

We report results from an experiment on ranking visual markers and node positioning techniques for network visualizations. Inspired by prior ranking studies, we rethink the ranking when the dataset size increases and when the markers are distributed in space. Centrality indices are visualized as node attributes. Our experiment studies nine visual markers and three positioning methods. Our results suggest that direct encoding of quantities improves accuracy by about 20% compared to previous results. Of the three positioning techniques, circular was always in the top group, and matrix and projection switch orders depending on two factors: whether or not the tasks demand symmetry, or the nodes are within closely proximity. Among the most interesting results of ranking the visual markers for comparison tasks are that hue and area fall into the top groups for nearly all multi-scale comparison tasks; Shape (ordered by curvature) is perhaps not as scalable as we have thought and can support more accurate answers only when two quantities are compared; Lightness and slope are least accurate for quantitative comparisons regardless of scale of the comparison tasks. Our experiment is among the first to acquire a complete picture of ranking visual markers in different scales for comparison tasks.

Information-Centric Wireless Networks with Mobile Edge Computing

In order to better accommodate the dramatically increasing demand for data caching and computing services, storage and computation capabilities should be endowed to some of the intermediate nodes within the network. In this paper, we design a novel virtualized heterogeneous networks framework aiming at enabling content caching and computing. With the virtualization of the whole system, the communication, computing and caching resources can be shared among all users associated with different virtual service providers. We formulate the virtual resource allocation strategy as a joint optimization problem, where the gains of not only virtualization but also caching and computing are taken into consideration in the proposed architecture. In addition, a distributed algorithm based on alternating direction method of multipliers is adopted to solve the formulated problem, in order to reduce the computational complexity and signaling overhead. Finally, extensive simulations are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme under different system parameters.

Quantum interference induced by multiple Landau-Zener transitions in a strongly driven rf-SQUID qubit

We irradiated an rf-SQUID qubit with large-amplitude and high frequency electromagnetic field. Population transitions between macroscopic distinctive quantum states due to Landau-Zener transitions at energy-level avoided crossings were observed. The qubit population on the excited states as a function of flux detuning and microwave power exhibits interference patterns. Some novel features are found in the interference and a model based on rate equations can well address the features.
