Study of the Crosstalk Evaluation for Cavity BPM

In order to pursue high-precision beam position measurements for the free-electron laser (FEL) facilities, cavity beam position monitor (CBPM) is employed to measure the transverse position which can meet the requirement of position resolution with a sub-micrometer or even nanometer scale. But for the pill-box cavity BPM, the possible existed crosstalk between the cavities will have effects on the accurate measurement of beam position. Two methods, the principle component analysis (PCA) method and the method of harmonic analysis, are proposed in this paper to evaluate the crosstalk based on the experiment dates from the low quality CBPM prototype in Shanghai Deep ultraviolet free electron laser (SDUV-FEL) facility and high quality CBPM in Dalian Coherent Light Source (DCLS), respectively. The results demonstrated that these two methods are feasible in evaluating the crosstalk between the cavities.

Heavy fermion quantum criticality at dilute carrier limit in CeNi$_{2-δ}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$

We study the quantum phase transitions in the nickel pnctides, CeNi$_{2-δ}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ ($δ$ $\approx$ 0.07-0.22). This series displays the distinct heavy fermion behavior in the rarely studied parameter regime of dilute carrier limit. We systematically investigate the magnetization, specific heat and electrical transport down to low temperatures. Upon increasing the P-content, the antiferromagnetic order of the Ce-4$f$ moment is suppressed continuously and vanishes at $x_c \sim$ 0.55. At this doping, the temperature dependences of the specific heat and longitudinal resistivity display non-Fermi liquid behavior. Both the residual resistivity $ρ_0$ and the Sommerfeld coefficient $γ_0$ are sharply peaked around $x_c$. When the P-content reaches close to 100\%, we observe a clear low-temperature crossover into the Fermi liquid regime. In contrast to what happens in the parent compound $x$ = 0.0 as a function of pressure, we find a surprising result that the non-Fermi liquid behavior persists over a nonzero range of doping concentration, $x_c<x<0.9$. In this doping range, at the lowest measured temperatures, the temperature dependence of the specific-heat coefficient is logarithmically divergent and that of the electrical resistivity is linear. We discuss the properties of CeNi$_{2-δ}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ in comparison with those of its 1111 counterpart, CeNi(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)O. Our results indicate a non-Fermi liquid phase in the global phase diagram of heavy fermion metals.

Improving Efficiency of SVM k-fold Cross-validation by Alpha Seeding

The k-fold cross-validation is commonly used to evaluate the effectiveness of SVMs with the selected hyper-parameters. It is known that the SVM k-fold cross-validation is expensive, since it requires training k SVMs. However, little work has explored reusing the h-th SVM for training the (h+1)-th SVM for improving the efficiency of k-fold cross-validation. In this paper, we propose three algorithms that reuse the h-th SVM for improving the efficiency of training the (h+1)-th SVM. Our key idea is to efficiently identify the support vectors and to accurately estimate their associated weights (also called alpha values) of the next SVM by using the previous SVM. Our experimental results show that our algorithms are several times faster than the k-fold cross-validation which does not make use of the previously trained SVM. Moreover, our algorithms produce the same results (hence same accuracy) as the k-fold cross-validation which does not make use of the previously trained SVM.

High-efficiency spontaneous terahertz emission from electrically-excited plasmons in AlGaN/GaN two-dimensional electron gas

The advance of terahertz science and technology yet lays wait for the breakthrough in high-efficiency and high-power solid-state terahertz sources applicable at room temperature. Plasmon in two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) has long been pursued as a type of promising active medium for terahertz emitters. However, a high wall-plug efficiency sufficient for high-power operation has not been achieved. Here we report spontaneous terahertz emission tunable in a frequency range from 0.3 to 2.5 THz through electrical excitation of plasmon or plasmon-polariton modes in a grating-gate coupled AlGaN/GaN 2DEG at 7 K. A wall-plug efficiency ranging from $10^{-6}$ to $10^{-1}$ is found by tuning the energy (4.5 eV to 0.5 eV) of tunneling electrons between the grating gates and the 2DEG. The total emission power, albeit below 15 nW, is already detectable by using a direct terahertz field-effect transistor detector based on the same type of 2DEG. The findings indicate that both high-efficiency and high-power terahertz plasmon-polariton emission could be obtained by a proper injection of tunneling electrons with low energy and high current density.

Bandwidth and Offset Launch Investigations on a 1.4 m Multimode Polymer Spiral Waveguide

Bandwidth measurements are conducted on a 1.4 m long spiral polymer multimode waveguide for a SMF and 50/125 um MMF launch and for different input offsets. The waveguide exhibits a bandwidth of at least 30 GHz for all input types, yielding a bandwidth-length product of at least 42 GHzxm, while no impact is observed on the waveguide performance due to the different spatial input offsets. The results indicate that data transmission at data rates even higher than 25 Gb/s can be achieved over such structures, thereby demonstrating the potential of multimode polymer waveguide technologies in short-reach board-level datacommunication links.

Loss and Bandwidth Studies on Multimode Polymer Waveguide Components for On-Board High-Speed Optical Interconnects

Optical interconnects play a key role in the implementation of high-speed short-reach communication links within high-performance electronic systems. Multimode polymer waveguides in particular are strong candidates for use in passive optical backplanes as they can be cost-effectively integrated onto standard PCBs. Various optical backplanes using this technology and featuring a large number of multimode polymer waveguide components have been recently demonstrated. The optimisation of the loss performance of these complex waveguide layouts becomes particularly important at high data rates (>=25 Gb/s) due to the associated stringent power budget requirements. Moreover, launch conditions have to be carefully considered in such systems due to the highly-multimoded nature of this waveguide technology. In this paper therefore, we present thorough loss and bandwidth studies on siloxane-based multimode waveguides and waveguide components (i.e. bends and crossings) that enable the implementation of passive optical backplanes. The performance of these components is experimentally investigated under different launch conditions for different waveguide profiles that can be readily achieved through fabrication. Useful design rules on the use of waveguide bends and crossings are derived for each waveguide type. It is shown that the choice of waveguide parameters depends on the particular waveguide layout, assumed launch conditions and desired link bandwidth. As an application of these studies, the obtained results are employed to optimise the loss performance of a 10-card shuffle router and enable >=40 Gb/s data transmission.

Antiferromagnetic Kondo lattice compound CePt$_{3}$P

A new ternary platinum phosphide CePt$_{3}$P was synthesized and characterized by means of magnetic, thermodynamic and transport measurements. The compound crystallizes in an antiperovskite tetragonal structure similar to that in the canonical family of platinum-based superconductors $A$Pt$_{3}$P ($A$ = Sr, Ca, La) and closely related to the noncentrosymmetric heavy fermion superconductor CePt$_{3}$Si. In contrast to all the superconducting counterparts, however, no superconductivity is observed in CePt$_{3}$P down to 0.5 K. Instead, CePt$_{3}$P displays a coexistence of antiferromagnetic ordering, Kondo effect and crystalline electric field effect. A field-induced spin-flop transition is observed below the magnetic ordering temperature $T_{N1}$ of 3.0 K while the Kondo temperature is of similar magnitude as $T_{N1}$. The obtained Sommerfeld coefficient of electronic specific heat is $γ_{Ce}$ = 86 mJ/molK$^{2}$ indicating that CePt$_{3}$P is a moderately correlated antiferromagnetic Kondo lattice compound.

Maximizing switching current of superconductor nanowires via improved impedance matching

The temporary resistance triggered by phase slip will result in the switching of superconductor nanowire to a permanent normal state, decreasing the switching current. In this letter, we propose an improved impedance matching circuit that releases the transition triggered by phase slips to the load resistor through the RF port of a bias tee. The transportation properties with different load resistors indicate that the switching current decreases due to the reflection caused by impedance mismatching, and is maximized by optimized impedance matching. Compared to the same setup without impedance matching circuit, the switching current was increased from 8.0 micro A to 12.2 micro A in a niobium nitride nanowire after releasing the temporary transition triggered by phase slips. The leakage process with impedance matching outputs a voltage pulse which enables the user to directly register the transition triggered by phase slips. The technique for maximizing the switching current has potential practical application in superconductor devices, and the technique for counting phase slips may be applied to explore the quantum behavior of phase slips.

High-Bandwidth and Large Coupling Tolerance Graded-Index Multimode Polymer Waveguides for On-board High-Speed Optical Interconnects

Optical interconnects have attracted significant research interest for use in short-reach board-level optical communication links in supercomputers and data centres. Multimode polymer waveguides in particular constitute an attractive technology for on-board optical interconnects as they provide high bandwidth, offer relaxed alignment tolerances, and can be cost-effectively integrated onto standard printed circuit boards (PCBs). However, the continuing improvements in bandwidth performance of optical sources make it important to investigate approaches to develop high bandwidth polymer waveguides. In this paper, we present dispersion studies on a graded-index (GI) waveguide in siloxane materials designed to deliver high bandwidth over a range of launch conditions. Bandwidth-length products of >70 GHzxm and ~65 GHzxm are observed using a 50/125 um multimode fibre (MMF) launch for input offsets of +/- 10 um without and with the use of a mode mixer respectively; and enhanced values of >100 GHzxm are found under a 10x microscope objective launch for input offsets of ~18 x 20 um^2. The large range of offsets is within the -1 dB alignment tolerances. A theoretical model is developed using the measured refractive index profile of the waveguide, and general agreement is found with experimental bandwidth measurements. The reported results clearly demonstrate the potential of this technology for use in high-speed board-level optical links, and indicate that data transmission of 100 Gb/s over a multimode polymer waveguide is feasible with appropriate refractive index engineering.

Beam Test Results of High Q CBPM prototype for SXFEL

Aiming at high precision beam position measurement of micron or sub-micron for Shanghai Soft X-ray free electron laser (SXFEL) facility which is being built in site of the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF), Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics has developed a high Q cavity beam position monitor (CBPM) that the resonant frequency is 4.7 GHz and relevant BPM electronics include dedicated RF front-end and home-made digital BPM (DBPM) also has been done. The cavity design, cold test, system architecture and the beam test with three adjacent pickups has been performed in Shanghai Deep ultraviolet free electron laser(SDUV-FEL) facility are included. The beam experiment results show that the physical design of our CBPM is consistent with the expectations basically and the beam position resolution can fulfill the resolution requirements for the SXFEL project if we optimize the beam conditions.

Enhanced superconductivity in hole-doped Nb$_{2}$PdS$_{5}$

We synthesized a series of Nb$_{2}$Pd$_{1-x}$Ru$_{x}$S$_{5}$ polycrystalline samples by a solid-state reaction method and systematically investigated the Ru-doping effect on superconductivity by transport and magnetic measurements. It is found that superconductivity is enhanced with Ru doping and is quite robust upon disorder. Hall coefficient measurements indicate that the charge transport is dominated by hole-type charge carriers similar to the case of Ir doping, suggesting multi-band superconductivity. Upon Ru or Ir doping, \emph H$_{c2}$/$\emph T_c$ exhibits a significant enhancement, exceeding the Pauli paramagnetic limit value by a factor of approximately 4. A comparison of $T_c$ and the upper critical field ($H_{c2}$) amongst the different doping elements on Pd site, reveals a significant role of spin--orbit coupling.

Bio-Inspired Resource Allocation for Relay-Aided Device-to-Device Communications

The Device-to-Device (D2D) communication principle is a key enabler of direct localized communication between mobile nodes and is expected to propel a plethora of novel multimedia services. However, even though it offers a wide set of capabilities mainly due to the proximity and resource reuse gains, interference must be carefully controlled to maximize the achievable rate for coexisting cellular and D2D users. The scope of this work is to provide an interference-aware real-time resource allocation (RA) framework for relay-aided D2D communications that underlay cellular networks. The main objective is to maximize the overall network throughput by guaranteeing a minimum rate threshold for cellular and D2D links. To this direction, genetic algorithms (GAs) are proven to be powerful and versatile methodologies that account for not only enhanced performance but also reduced computational complexity in emerging wireless networks. Numerical investigations highlight the performance gains compared to baseline RA methods and especially in highly dense scenarios which will be the case in future 5G networks.

Giant Linear Magneto-resistance in Nonmagnetic PtBi2

We synthesized nonmagnetic PtBi$_2$ single crystals and observed a giant linear magneto-resistance (MR) up to 684\% under a magnetic field $μ_0H$ = 15 T at $T$ = 2 K. The linear MR decreases with increasing temperature, but it is still as large as 61\% under $μ_0H$ of 15 T at room temperature. Such a giant linear MR is unlikely to be described by the quantum model as the quantum condition is not satisfied. Instead, we found that the slope of MR scales with the Hall mobility, and it can be well explained by a classical disorder model.

Landau-Zener-Stuckelberg-Majorana interference in a 3D transmon driven by a chirped microwave

By driving a 3D transmon with microwave fields, we generate an effective avoided energy-level crossing. Then we chirp microwave frequency, which is equivalent to driving the system through the avoided energy-level crossing by sweeping the avoided crossing. A double-passage chirp produces Landau-Zener-Stückelberg-Majorana interference that agree well with the numerical results. Our method is fully applicable to other quantum systems that contain no intrinsic avoided level crossing, providing an alternative approach for quantum control and quantum simulation.

Point defects in epitaxial silicene on Ag(111) surface

Silicene, a counterpart of graphene, has achieved rapid development due to its exotic electronic properties and excellent compatibility with the mature silicon-based semiconductor technology. Its low room-temperature mobility of about 100 cm2V-1s-1, however, inhibits device applications such as in field-effect transistors. Generally, defects and grain boundaries would act as scattering centers and thus reduce the carrier mobility. In this paper, the morphologies of various point defects in epitaxial silicene on Ag(111) surfaces have been systematically investigated using first-principles calculations combined with experimental scanning tunneling microscope (STM) observations. The STM signatures for various defects in epitaxial silicene on Ag(111) surface are identified. In particular, the formation energies of point defects in Ag(111)-supported silicene sheets show an interesting dependence on the superstructures, which, in turn, may have implications for controlling the defect density during the synthesis of silicene. Through estimating the concentrations of various point defects in different silicene superstructures, the mystery of the defective appearance of v13*v13 silicene in experiments is revealed, and 4*4 silicene sheet is thought to be the most suitable structure for future device applications.

Optimal Power Allocation for A Massive MIMO Relay Aided Secure Communication

In this paper, we address the problem of optimal power allocation at the relay in two-hop secure communications under practical conditions. To guarantee secure communication during the long-distance transmission, the massive MIMO (M-MIMO) relaying techniques are explored to significantly enhance wireless security. The focus of this paper is on the analysis and design of optimal power assignment for a decode-and-forward (DF) M-MIMO relay, so as to maximize the secrecy outage capacity and minimize the interception probability, respectively. Our study reveals the condition for a nonnegative the secrecy outage capacity, obtains closed-form expressions for optimal power, and presents the asymptotic characteristics of secrecy performance. Finally, simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed schemes.
