Phase transitions and bump solutions of the Keller-Segel model with volume exclusion

We show that the Keller-Segel model in one dimension with Neumann boundary conditions and quadratic cellular diffusion has an intricate phase transition diagram depending on the chemosensitivity strength. Explicit computations allow us to find a myriad of symmetric and asymmetric stationary states whose stability properties are mostly studied via free energy decreasing numerical schemes. The metastability behavior and staircased free energy decay are also illustrated via these numerical simulations.

A new approach to a network of congruences on an inverse semigroup

This paper enriches the list of known properties of congruence sequences starting from the universal relation and successively performing the operators lower $k$ and lower $t$. Two series of inverse semigroups, namely $\ker{α_n}$-is-Clifford semigroups and $β_n$-is-over-$E$-unitary semigroups, are investigated. Two congruences, namely $α_{n+2}$ and $β_{n+2}$, are found to be the least $\ker{α_n}$-is-Clifford and least $β_n$-is-over-$E$-unitary congruences on $S$, respectively. A new system of implications is established for the quasivarieties of inverse semigroups induced by the min network.

An energy-based discontinuous Galerkin method for the wave equation with advection

An energy-based discontinuous Galerkin method for the advective wave equation is proposed and analyzed. Energy-conserving or energy-dissipating methods follow from simple, mesh-independent choices of the inter-element fluxes, and both subsonic and supersonic advection is allowed. Error estimates in the energy norm are established, and numerical experiments on structured grids display optimal convergence in the $L^2$ norm for upwind fluxes. The method generalizes earlier work on energy-based discontinuous Galerkin methods for second order wave equations which was restricted to energy forms written as a simple sum of kinetic and potential energy.

An Empirical Study of Fault Localization Families and Their Combinations

The performance of fault localization techniques is critical to their adoption in practice. This paper reports on an empirical study of a wide range of fault localization techniques on real-world faults. Different from previous studies, this paper (1) considers a wide range of techniques from different families, (2) combines different techniques, and (3) considers the execution time of different techniques. Our results reveal that a combined technique significantly outperforms any individual technique (200% increase in faults localized in Top 1), suggesting that combination may be a desirable way to apply fault localization techniques and that future techniques should also be evaluated in the combined setting. Our implementation is publicly available for evaluating and combining fault localization techniques.

A new asymptotical flat and spherically symmetric solution in the generalized Einstein-Cartan-Kibble-Sciama gravity and gravitational lensing

We firstly present a new asymptotical flat and spherically symmetric solution in the generalized Einstein-Cartan-Kibble-Sciama (ECKS) theory of gravity and then investigate the propagation of photon in this background. This solution possesses three independent parameters which affect sharply photon sphere, deflection angle of light ray and gravitational lensing. Since the condition of existence of horizons is not inconsistent with that of photon sphere, there exists a special case where there is horizon but no photon sphere in this spacetime. Especially, we find that in this special case, the deflection angle of a light ray near the event horizon tends to a finite value rather than diverges, which is not explored in other spacetimes. We also study the strong gravitational lensing in this spacetime with the photon sphere and then probe how the spacetime parameters affect the coefficients in the strong field limit.

A Grammar-Based Structural CNN Decoder for Code Generation

Code generation maps a program description to executable source code in a programming language. Existing approaches mainly rely on a recurrent neural network (RNN) as the decoder. However, we find that a program contains significantly more tokens than a natural language sentence, and thus it may be inappropriate for RNN to capture such a long sequence. In this paper, we propose a grammar-based structural convolutional neural network (CNN) for code generation. Our model generates a program by predicting the grammar rules of the programming language; we design several CNN modules, including the tree-based convolution and pre-order convolution, whose information is further aggregated by dedicated attentive pooling layers. Experimental results on the HearthStone benchmark dataset show that our CNN code generator significantly outperforms the previous state-of-the-art method by 5 percentage points; additional experiments on several semantic parsing tasks demonstrate the robustness of our model. We also conduct in-depth ablation test to better understand each component of our model.

High-speed PAM4-based Optical SDM Interconnects with Directly Modulated Long-wavelength VCSEL

This paper reports the demonstration of high-speed PAM-4 transmission using a 1.5-μm single-mode vertical cavity surface emitting laser (SM-VCSEL) over multicore fiber with 7 cores over different distances. We have successfully generated up to 70 Gbaud 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4) signals with a VCSEL in optical back-to-back, and transmitted 50 Gbaud PAM-4 signals over both 1-km dispersion-uncompensated and 10-km dispersion-compensated in each core, enabling a total data throughput of 700 Gbps over the 7-core fiber. Moreover, 56 Gbaud PAM-4 over 1-km has also been shown, whereby unfortunately not all cores provide the required 3.8 $\times$ 10 $^{-3}$ bit error rate (BER) for the 7% overhead-hard decision forward error correction (7% OH HDFEC). The limited bandwidth of the VCSEL and the adverse chromatic dispersion of the fiber are suppressed with pre-equalization based on accurate end-to-end channel characterizations. With a digital post-equalization, BER performance below the 7% OH-HDFEC limit is achieved over all cores. The demonstrated results show a great potential to realize high-capacity and compact short-reach optical interconnects for data centers.

A Note on the comparison of Nearest Neighbor Gaussian Process (NNGP) based models

This note is devoted to the comparison between two Nearest-neighbor Gaussian processes (NNGP) based models: the response NNGP model and the latent NNGP model. We exhibit that the comparison based on the Kullback-Leibler divergence (KL-D) from the NNGP based models to their parent GP based model can result in reverse conclusions in different parameter spaces. And we suggest a heuristic explanation on the phenomenon that the latent NNGP model tends to outperform the response NNGP model in approximating their parent GP based model.

Asymptotic Upper Capacity Bound for Receive Antenna Selection in Massive MIMO Systems

This paper studies the receive antenna selection in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. The receiver, equipped with a large-scale antenna array whose size is much larger than that of the transmitter, selects a subset of antennas to receive messages. A low-complexity asymptotic approximated upper capacity bound is derived in the limit of massive MIMO systems over independent and identical distributed flat fading Rayleigh channel, assuming that the channel side information (CSI) is only available at the receiver. Furthermore, the asymptotic theory is separately applied to two scenarios which is based on whether the total amount of the selected antennas exceed that of the transmit antennas. Besides analytical derivations, simulation results are provided to demonstrate the approximation precision of the asymptotic results and the tightness of the capacity bound.

Contrast and visual saliency similarity-induced index for assessing image quality

Image quality that is consistent with human opinion is assessed by a perceptual image quality assessment (IQA) that defines/utilizes a computational model. A good model should take effectiveness and efficiency into consideration, but most of the previously proposed IQA models do not simultaneously consider these factors. Therefore, this study attempts to develop an effective and efficient IQA metric. Contrast is an inherent visual attribute that indicates image quality, and visual saliency (VS) is a quality that attracts the attention of human beings. The proposed model utilized these two features to characterize the image local quality. After obtaining the local contrast quality map and the global VS quality map, we added the weighted standard deviation of the previous two quality maps together to yield the final quality score. The experimental results for three benchmark databases (LIVE, TID2008, and CSIQ) demonstrated that our model performs the best in terms of a correlation with the human judgment of visual quality. Furthermore, compared with competing IQA models, this proposed model is more efficient.

Fairness-aware Classification: Criterion, Convexity, and Bounds

Fairness-aware classification is receiving increasing attention in the machine learning fields. Recently research proposes to formulate the fairness-aware classification as constrained optimization problems. However, several limitations exist in previous works due to the lack of a theoretical framework for guiding the formulation. In this paper, we propose a general framework for learning fair classifiers which addresses previous limitations. The framework formulates various commonly-used fairness metrics as convex constraints that can be directly incorporated into classic classification models. Within the framework, we propose a constraint-free criterion on the training data which ensures that any classifier learned from the data is fair. We also derive the constraints which ensure that the real fairness metric is satisfied when surrogate functions are used to achieve convexity. Our framework can be used to for formulating fairness-aware classification with fairness guarantee and computational efficiency. The experiments using real-world datasets demonstrate our theoretical results and show the effectiveness of proposed framework and methods.

First Investigation on the Radiation Field of the Gas-Filled Three-Axis Cylindrical Hohlraum

A novel ignition hohlraum named three-axis cylindrical hohlraum (TACH) is designed for indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion. TACH is a kind of 6 laser entrance holes (LEHs) hohlraum, which is orthogonally jointed of three cylindrical hohlraums. The first experiment on the radiation field of TACH was performed on Shenguang III laser facility. 24 laser beams were elected and injected into 6 LEHs quasi-symmetrically. Total laser energy was about 59 kJ, and the peak radiation temperature reached about 192 eV. Radiation temperature and pinhole images in gas-filled hohlraum are largely identical but with minor differences with those in vacuum hohlraum. All laser energy can be totally delivered into hohlraum in 3 ns duration even without filled gas in the hohlraum of 1.4 mm diameter. Plasma filling cannot be obviously suppressed even with 0.5 atm pressure gas in the small hohlraum. Backscattering fractions of vacuum hohlraum and gas-filled hohlraum are both lower than 2%. Experimental study of this new kind of hohlraum can provide guidance for future target design and implosion experiment.

First Integrated Implosion Experiment of Three-Axis Cylindrical Hohlraum at the SGIII Laser Facility

The first integrated implosion experiment of three-axis cylindrical hohlraum (TACH) was accomplished at the SGIII laser facility. 24 laser beams of the SGIII laser facility were carefully chosen and quasi-symmetrically injected into the TACH, in which a highly symmetric radiation filed was generated with a peak radiation temperature of ~190eV. Driven by the radiation field, the neutron yield of a deuterium gas filled capsule reached ~1e9, and the corresponding yield over clean (YOC) was ~40% for a convergence ratio (Cr) of ~17. The X-ray self-emission image of imploded capsule cores was nearly round, and the backscatter fraction of laser beams was less than 1.25%. This experiment preliminarily demonstrated the major performance of TACH, such as the robustness of symmetry, and a laser plasma instability (LPI) behavior similar to that of the outer ring of traditional cylindrical hohlraum.

Precise Condition Synthesis for Program Repair

Due to the difficulty of repairing defect, many research efforts have been devoted into automatic defect repair. Given a buggy program that fails some test cases, a typical automatic repair technique tries to modify the program to make all tests pass. However, since the test suites in real world projects are usually insufficient, aiming at passing the test suites often leads to incorrect patches. In this paper we aim to produce precise patches, that is, any patch we produce has a relatively high probability to be correct. More concretely, we focus on condition synthesis, which was shown to be able to repair more than half of the defects in existing approaches. Our key insight is threefold. First, it is important to know what variables in a local context should be used in an "if" condition, and we propose a sorting method based on the dependency relations between variables. Second, we observe that the API document can be used to guide the repair process, and propose document analysis technique to further filter the variables. Third, it is important to know what predicates should be performed on the set of variables, and we propose to mine a set of frequently used predicates in similar contexts from existing projects. We develop a novel program repair system, ACS, that could generate precise conditions at faulty locations. Furthermore, given the generated conditions are very precise, we can perform a repair operation that is previously deemed to be too overfitting: directly returning the test oracle to repair the defect. Using our approach, we successfully repaired 17 defects on four projects of Defects4J, which is the largest number of fully automatically repaired defects reported on the dataset so far. More importantly, the precision of our approach in the evaluation is 73.9%, which is significantly higher than previous approaches, which are usually less than 40%.
