Low-Latency and Secure Computation Offloading Assisted by Hybrid Relay-Reflecting Intelligent Surface

Recently, the hybrid relay-reflecting intelligent surface (HRRIS) has been introduced as a spectral- and energy-efficient architecture to assist wireless communication systems. In the HRRIS, a single or few active relay elements are deployed along with a large number of passive reflecting elements, allowing it to not only reflect but also amplify the incident signals. In this work, we investigate the potential of the HRRIS in aiding the computation offloading in a single-user mobile edge computing system. The objective is to minimize the offloading latency while ensuring the secrecy of user data against a malicious eavesdropper. We develop efficient solutions to this latency minimization problem based on alternating optimization. Through numerical results, we show that the deployment of the HRRIS can result in a considerable reduction in latency. Furthermore, the latency reduction gain offered by the HRRIS is much more significant than that of the conventional reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS).

Closed-Form Hybrid Beamforming Solution for Spectral Efficiency Upper Bound Maximization in mmWave MIMO-OFDM Systems

Hybrid beamforming is considered a key enabler to realize millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications due to its capability of considerably reducing the number of costly and power-hungry radio frequency chains in the transceiver. However, in mmWave MIMO orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) systems, hybrid beamforming design is challenging because the analog precoder and combiner are required to be shared across the whole employed bandwidth. In this paper, we propose closed-form solutions to the problem of designing the analog precoder/combiner in a mmWave MIMO-OFDM system by maximizing the upper bound of the spectral efficiency. The closed-form solutions facilitate the design of analog beamformers while guaranteeing state-of-art performance. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm attains a slightly improved performance with much lower computational complexity compared to the considered benchmarks.

Two-Stage Channel Estimation for Hybrid RIS Assisted MIMO Systems

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have been proposed as a key enabler to improve the coverage of the signals and mitigate the frequent blockages in millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications. However, the channel state information (CSI) acquisition is one of the major challenges for the practical deployment of the RIS. The passive RIS without any baseband processing capabilities brings difficulty on the channel estimation (CE), since the individual channels or the cascaded one can be estimated only at base station (BS) via uplink training or mobile station (MS) via downlink training. In order to facilitate the CSI acquisition, we focus on the hybrid RIS architecture, where a small number of elements are active and able to receive and process the pilot signals at the RIS. The CE is performed in two stages by following the atomic norm minimization to recover the channel parameters, i.e., angles of departure (AoDs), angles of arrival (AoAs), and propagation path gains. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can outperform the passive RIS CE under the same training overhead. Furthermore, we also study the theoretical performance limits in terms of mean square error (MSE) via Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) analyses.

Stochastic Geometry based Interference Analysis of Multiuser mmWave Networks with RIS

In this paper, we utilize tools from stochastic geometry to estimate the interference propagation via reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) in the millimeter wave (mmWave, 30-300 GHz) band and specifically on the D band (110-170 GHz). The RISs have been of great interest lately to maximize the channel gains in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) communication situations. We derive expressions for stochastic interference level in RIS powered systems and validate those with simulations. It will be shown that the interference levels via RIS link are rather small compared to the designed RIS link or the LOS interference as the random interference loses significant part of the RIS gain. We also analyse the validity of far field channel and antenna gains in the near field of a large array. It is shown that, while the high frequency systems require large arrays that push the far field far away from the antenna, the far field equations are very accurate up to about half way of the near field.

Channel Estimation for Hybrid RIS Aided MIMO Communications via Atomic Norm Minimization

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have been introduced as a remedy for mitigating frequent blockages in millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication networks. However, perfect or nearly perfect channel state information (CSI) is fundamental in order to achieve their full potential. Traditionally, an RIS is fully passive without any baseband processing capabilities, which poses great challenges for CSI acquisition. Thus, we focus on the hybrid RIS architecture, where a small portion of RIS elements are active and able to processing the received pilot signals for estimating the corresponding channel. The channel estimation (CE) is done by resorting to off-the-grid compressive sensing technique, i.e., atomic norm minimization, for exacting channel parameters through two stages. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the passive RIS CE under the same training overhead.

Hybrid Relay-Reflecting Intelligent Surface-Aided Wireless Communications: Opportunities, Challenges, and Future Perspectives

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have emerged as a cost- and energy-efficient technology that can customize and program the physical propagation environment by reflecting radio waves in preferred directions. However, the purely passive reflection of RISs not only limits the end-to-end channel beamforming gains, but also hinders the acquisition of accurate channel state information for the phase control at RISs. In this paper, we provide an overview of a hybrid relay-reflecting intelligent surface (HR-RIS) architecture, in which only a few elements are active and connected to power amplifiers and radio frequency chains. The introduction of a small number of active elements enables a remarkable system performance improvement which can also compensate for losses due to hardware impairments such as the deployment of limited-resolution phase shifters. Particularly, the active processing facilitates efficient channel estimation and localization at HR-RISs. We present two practical architectures for HR-RISs, namely, fixed and dynamic HR-RISs, and discuss their applications to beamforming, channel estimation, and localization. The benefits, key challenges, and future research directions for HR-RIS-aided communications are also highlighted. Numerical results for an exemplary deployment scenario show that HR-RISs with only four active elements can attain up to 42.8 percent and 41.8 percent improvement in spectral efficiency and energy efficiency, respectively, compared with conventional RISs.

Spectral Efficiency Optimization for Hybrid Relay-Reflecting Intelligent Surface

We propose a novel concept of hybrid relay-reflecting intelligent surface (HR-RIS), in which a single or few elements are deployed with power amplifiers (PAs) to serve as active relays, while the remaining elements only reflect the incident signals. The design and optimization of the HR-RIS is formulated in a spectral efficiency (SE) maximization problem, which is efficiently solved by the alternating optimization (AO) method. The simulation results show that a significant improvement in the SE can be attained by the proposed HR-RIS, even with a limited power budget, with respect to the conventional reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). In particular, the favorable design and deployment of the HR-RIS are analytically derived and numerically justified.

Machine Learning-based Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-aided MIMO Systems

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technology has recently emerged as a spectral- and cost-efficient approach for wireless communications systems. However, existing hand-engineered schemes for passive beamforming design and optimization of RIS, such as the alternating optimization (AO) approaches, require a high computational complexity, especially for multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems. To overcome this challenge, we propose a low-complexity unsupervised learning scheme, referred to as learning-phase-shift neural network (LPSNet), to efficiently find the solution to the spectral efficiency maximization problem in RIS-aided MIMO systems. In particular, the proposed LPSNet has an optimized input structure and requires a small number of layers and nodes to produce efficient phase shifts for the RIS. Simulation results for a 16x2 MIMO system assisted by an RIS with 40 elements show that the LPSNet achieves 97.25% of the SE provided by the AO counterpart with more than a 95% reduction in complexity.

Exploiting Spatial Correlation for Pilot Reuse in Single-Cell mMTC

As a key enabler for massive machine-type communications (mMTC), spatial multiplexing relies on massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) technology to serve the massive number of user equipments (UEs). To exploit spatial multiplexing, accurate channel estimation through pilot signals is needed. In mMTC systems, it is impractical to allocate a unique orthogonal pilot sequence to each UE as it would require too long pilot sequences, degrading the spectral efficiency. This work addresses the design of channel features from correlated fading channels to assist the pilot assignment in multi-sector mMTC systems under pilot reuse of orthogonal sequences. In order to reduce pilot collisions and to enable pilot reuse, we propose to extract features from the channel covariance matrices that reflect the level of orthogonality between the UEs channels. Two features are investigated: covariance matrix distance (CMD) feature and CMD-aided channel charting (CC) feature. In terms of symbol error rate and achievable rate, the CC-based feature shows superior performance than the CMD-based feature and baseline pilot assignment algorithms.

Coverage Analysis for 3D Terahertz Communication Systems

We conduct novel coverage probability analysis of downlink transmission in a three-dimensional (3D) terahertz (THz) communication (THzCom) system. In this system, we address the unique propagation properties in THz band, e.g., absorption loss, super-narrow directional beams, and high vulnerability towards blockage, which are fundamentally different from those at lower frequencies. Different from existing studies, we characterize the performance while considering the effect of 3D directional antennas at both access points (APs) and user equipments (UEs), and the joint impact of the blockage caused by the user itself, moving humans, and wall blockers in a 3D environment. Under such consideration, we develop a tractable analytical framework to derive a new expression for the coverage probability by examining the regions where dominant interferers (i.e., those can cause outage by themselves) can exist, and the average number of interferers existing in these regions. Aided by numerical results, we validate our analysis and reveal that ignoring the impact of the vertical heights of THz devices in the analysis leads to a substantial underestimation of the coverage probability. We also show that it is more worthwhile to increase the antenna directivity at the APs than at the UEs, to produce a more reliable THzCom system.

Channel Estimation and Hybrid Architectures for RIS-Assisted Communications

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are considered as potential technologies for the upcoming sixth-generation (6G) wireless communication system. Various benefits brought by deploying one or multiple RISs include increased spectrum and energy efficiency, enhanced connectivity, extended communication coverage, reduced complexity at transceivers, and even improved localization accuracy. However, to unleash their full potential, fundamentals related to RISs, ranging from physical-layer (PHY) modelling to RIS phase control, need to be addressed thoroughly. In this paper, we provide an overview of some timely research problems related to the RIS technology, i.e., PHY modelling (including also physics), channel estimation, potential RIS architectures, and RIS phase control (via both model-based and data-driven approaches), along with recent numerical results. We envision that more efforts will be devoted towards intelligent wireless environments, enabled by RISs.

Leveraging Location Information for RIS-aided mmWave MIMO Communications

Location information offered by external positioning systems, e.g., satellite navigation, can be used as prior information in the process of beam alignment and channel parameter estimation for reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output networks. Benefiting from the availability of such prior information, albeit imperfect, the beam alignment and channel parameter estimation processes can be significantly accelerated with less candidate beams explored at all the terminals. We propose a practical channel parameter estimation method via atomic norm minimization, which outperforms the standard beam alignment in terms of both the mean square error and the effective spectrum efficiency for the same training overhead.

Iterative Reweighted Algorithms for Joint User Identification and Channel Estimation in Spatially Correlated Massive MTC

Joint user identification and channel estimation (JUICE) is a main challenge in grant-free massive machine-type communications (mMTC). The sparse pattern in users' activity allows to solve the JUICE as a compressed sensing problem in a multiple measurement vector (MMV) setup. This paper addresses the JUICE under the practical spatially correlated fading channel. We formulate the JUICE as an iterative reweighted $\ell_{2,1}$-norm optimization. We develop a computationally efficient alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) approach to solve it. In particular, by leveraging the second-order statistics of the channels, we reformulate the JUICE problem to exploit the covariance information and we derive its ADMM-based solution. The simulation results highlight the significant improvements brought by the proposed approach in terms of channel estimation and activity detection performances.

Hybrid Relay-Reflecting Intelligent Surface-Assisted Wireless Communication

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has emerged as a cost- and energy-efficient solution to enhance the wireless communication capacity. However, recent studies show that a very large surface is required for a RIS-assisted communication system; otherwise, they may be outperformed by the conventional relay. Furthermore, the performance gain of a RIS can be considerably degraded by hardware impairments such as limited-resolution phase shifters. To overcome those challenges, we propose a novel concept of hybrid relay-reflecting intelligent surface (HR-RIS), in which a single or few elements are deployed with power amplifiers (PAs) to serve as active relays, while the remaining elements only reflect the incident signals. Two architectures are proposed, including the fixed and dynamic HR-RIS. Their coefficient matrices are obtained based on alternating optimization (AO) and power allocation strategies, which enable understanding the fundamental performances of RIS and relaying-based systems with a trade-off between the two. The simulation results show that a significant improvement in both the spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE) with respect to the conventional RIS-aided system can be attained by the proposed schemes, especially, by the dynamic HR-RIS. In particular, the favorable design and deployment of the HR-RIS are analytically derived and numerically justified.

Passive RIS vs.Hybrid RIS: A Comparative Study on Channel Estimation

The reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) plays an important role in maintaining the connectivity in millimeter wave (mmWave) MIMO systems when the direct channel between the transceivers is blocked. However, it is difficult to acquire the channel state information (CSI), which is essential for the design of RIS phase control matrix and beamforming vectors at the transceivers. In this paper, we compare the channel estimation (CE) performance and achieved spectral efficiency (SE) of the purely passive and hybrid RIS architectures. CE is done via atomic norm minimization (ANM). For the purely passive RIS, we follow a two-stage procedure to sequentially estimate the channel parameters, while for the hybrid RIS we estimate the individual channels at the RIS based on the observations from active RIS elements assuming alternating uplink and downlink training. The simulation results show that the purely passive RIS brings better CE and SE performance compared to the hybrid RIS under the same training overhead. We further consider different setups for the hybrid RIS and study the tradeoffs among them.

Channel Estimation for RIS-Aided mmWave MIMO Systems via Atomic Norm Minimization

A reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) can shape the radio propagation environment by virtue of changing the impinging electromagnetic waves towards any desired directions, thus, breaking the general Snell's reflection law. However, the optimal control of the RIS requires perfect channel state information (CSI) of the individual channels that link the base station (BS) and the mobile station (MS) to each other via the RIS. Thereby super-resolution channel (parameter) estimation needs to be efficiently conducted at the BS or MS with CSI feedback to the RIS controller. In this paper, we adopt a two-stage channel estimation scheme for RIS-aided millimeter wave (mmWave) MIMO systems without a direct BS-MS channel, using atomic norm minimization to sequentially estimate the channel parameters, i.e., angular parameters, angle differences, and products of propagation path gains. We evaluate the mean square error of the parameter estimates, the RIS gains, the average effective spectrum efficiency bound, and average squared distance between the designed beamforming and combining vectors and the optimal ones. The results demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieves super-resolution estimation compared to the existing benchmark schemes, thus offering promising performance in the subsequent data transmission phase.

Latency Minimization in Intelligent Reflecting Surface Assisted D2D Offloading Systems

In this letter, we investigate an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided device-to-device (D2D) offloading system, where an IRS is employed to assist in computation offloading from a group of users with intensive tasks to another group of idle users. We propose a new two-timescale joint passive beamforming and resource allocation algorithm based on stochastic successive convex approximation to minimize the system latency while cutting down the heavy overhead in exchange of channel state information (CSI). Specifically, the high-dimensional passive beamforming vector at the IRS is updated in a frame-based manner based on the channel statistics, where each frame consists of a number of time slots, while the offloading ratio and user matching strategy are optimized relied on the low-dimensional real-time effective channel coefficients in each time slot. The convergence property and the computational complexity of the proposed algorithm are also examined. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm significantly outperforms the conventional benchmarks.

FPGA Implementation of Stair Matrix based Massive MIMO Detection

Approximate matrix inversion based methods is widely used for linear massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) received symbol vector detection. Such detectors typically utilize the diagonally dominant channel matrix of a massive MIMO system. Instead of diagonal matrix, a stair matrix can be utilized to improve the error-rate performance of a massive MIMO detector. In this paper, we present very large-scale integration (VLSI) architecture and field programmable gate array (FPGA) implementation of a stair matrix based iterative detection algorithm. The architecture supports a base station with 128 antennas, 8 users with single antenna, and 256 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). The stair matrix based detector can deliver a 142.34 Mbps data rate and reach a clock frequency of 258 MHz in a Xilinx Virtex-7 FPGA. The detector provides superior error-rate performance and higher scaled throughput than most contemporary massive MIMO detectors.
