Low dose SPECT image denoising using a generative adversarial network

The image noise level and resolution of SPECT images are relatively poor attributed to the limited number of detected counts and various physical degradation factors during acquisitions. This study aims to apply and evaluate the use of generative adversarial network (GAN) method in static SPECT image denoising. A population of 4D extended cardiac-torso (XCAT) phantoms were used to simulate 10 male and female patients with different organ sizes and activity uptakes. An analytical projector was applied to simulate 120 projections from right anterior oblique to left posterior oblique positions with two noise levels. The first noise level was based on a standard clinical count rate of 987 MBq injection and 16 min acquisition (low noise) while the other was 1/8 of the previous count rate (high noise). The high noise and low noise SPECT reconstructed images of 9 patients, i.e., 1026 images (9*114 axial slices) respectively, were paired for training. High noise SPECT images of 1 patient were tested using the trained GAN. The noise level is substantially reduced in high noise SPECT reconstructed images after using the GAN. Our method has the potential to decrease the noise level of SPECT images, which could be traded for a reduced injection dose or acquisition time while still maintaining the similar image quality as compared to the original low noise images for clinical diagnosis.

Image Super-Resolution Using a Wavelet-based Generative Adversarial Network

In this paper, we consider the problem of super-resolution recons-truction. This is a hot topic because super-resolution reconstruction has a wide range of applications in the medical field, remote sensing monitoring, and criminal investigation. Compared with traditional algorithms, the current super-resolution reconstruction algorithm based on deep learning greatly improves the clarity of reconstructed pictures. Existing work like Super-Resolution Using a Generative Adversarial Network (SRGAN) can effectively restore the texture details of the image. However, experimentally verified that the texture details of the image recovered by the SRGAN are not robust. In order to get super-resolution reconstructed images with richer high-frequency details, we improve the network structure and propose a super-resolution reconstruction algorithm combining wavelet transform and Generative Adversarial Network. The proposed algorithm can efficiently reconstruct high-resolution images with rich global information and local texture details. We have trained our model by PyTorch framework and VOC2012 dataset, and tested it by Set5, Set14, BSD100 and Urban100 test datasets.

Beamforming Design in Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output Symbiotic Radio Backscatter Systems

Symbiotic radio (SR) backscatter systems are possible techniques for the future low-power wireless communications for Internet of Things devices. In this paper, we propose a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) SR backscatter system, where the secondary multi-antenna transmission from the backscatter device (BD) to the receiver is riding on the primary multi-antenna transmission from the transmitter to the receiver. We investigate the beamforming design optimization problem which maximizes the achievable rate of secondary transmission under the achievable rate constraint of primary transmission. In the MIMO SR backscatter system, each antenna of the SR BD reflects its received ambient radio frequency signals from all the transmitting antennas of the transmitter, which causes the globally optimal solution is difficult to obtain. In this paper, we propose a method to obtain the achievable rate upper bound. Furthermore, considering both primary and secondary transmissions, we propose an exact penalty method based locally optimal solution. Simulation results illustrate that our proposed exact penalty method based locally optimal solution performs close to the upper bound.

StackVault: Protection from Untrusted Functions

Data exfiltration attacks have led to huge data breaches. Recently, the Equifax attack affected 147M users and a third-party library - Apache Struts - was alleged to be responsible for it. These attacks often exploit the fact that sensitive data are stored unencrypted in process memory and can be accessed by any function executing within the same process, including untrusted third-party library functions. This paper presents StackVault, a kernel-based system to prevent sensitive stack-based data from being accessed in an unauthorized manner by intra-process functions. Stack-based data includes data on stack as well as data pointed to by pointer variables on stack. StackVault consists of three components: (1) a set of programming APIs to allow users to specify which data needs to be protected, (2) a kernel module which uses unforgeable function identities to reliably carry out the sensitive data protection, and (3) an LLVM compiler extension that enables transparent placement of stack protection operations. The StackVault system automatically enforces stack protection through spatial and temporal access monitoring and control over both sensitive stack data and untrusted functions. We implemented StackVault and evaluated it using a number of popular real-world applications, including gRPC. The results show that StackVault is effective and efficient, incurring only up to 2.4% runtime overhead.

Distantly Supervised Named Entity Recognition using Positive-Unlabeled Learning

In this work, we explore the way to perform named entity recognition (NER) using only unlabeled data and named entity dictionaries. To this end, we formulate the task as a positive-unlabeled (PU) learning problem and accordingly propose a novel PU learning algorithm to perform the task. We prove that the proposed algorithm can unbiasedly and consistently estimate the task loss as if there is fully labeled data. A key feature of the proposed method is that it does not require the dictionaries to label every entity within a sentence, and it even does not require the dictionaries to label all of the words constituting an entity. This greatly reduces the requirement on the quality of the dictionaries and makes our method generalize well with quite simple dictionaries. Empirical studies on four public NER datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method. We have published the source code at \url{https://github.com/v-mipeng/LexiconNER}.

Time-Series Anomaly Detection Service at Microsoft

Large companies need to monitor various metrics (for example, Page Views and Revenue) of their applications and services in real time. At Microsoft, we develop a time-series anomaly detection service which helps customers to monitor the time-series continuously and alert for potential incidents on time. In this paper, we introduce the pipeline and algorithm of our anomaly detection service, which is designed to be accurate, efficient and general. The pipeline consists of three major modules, including data ingestion, experimentation platform and online compute. To tackle the problem of time-series anomaly detection, we propose a novel algorithm based on Spectral Residual (SR) and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). Our work is the first attempt to borrow the SR model from visual saliency detection domain to time-series anomaly detection. Moreover, we innovatively combine SR and CNN together to improve the performance of SR model. Our approach achieves superior experimental results compared with state-of-the-art baselines on both public datasets and Microsoft production data.

Secure Beamforming in MISO NOMA Backscatter Device Aided Symbiotic Radio Networks

Symbiotic radio (SR) networks are possible solutions to the future low-power wireless communications for massive Internet of Things devices. In this paper, we investigate a multiple-input-single-output non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) backscatter device (BD) aided SR network with a potential eavesdropper. In the network, a base station (BS) broadcasts signals to a central user and a cell-edge user using the NOMA protocol. With ambient backscatter modulation, the BD transmits its own messages to the central user over incident signals from the BS. We propose a constrained concave convex procedure-based algorithm which maximizes the $ε$-outage secrecy rate from the BD to the central user under the achievable secrecy rate constraints from the BS to the central and cell-edge users. Simulation results illustrate that our proposed network achieves a much larger secrecy rate region than the orthogonal multiple access (OMA) network.

Joint Optimization of Cooperative Communication and Computation in Two-Way Relay MEC Systems

Considering two users exchange computational results through a two-way relay equipped with a mobile-edge computing server, we investigate the joint optimization problem of cooperative communication and computation, whose objective is the total energy consumption minimization subject to the delay constraint. To derive the low-complexity optimal solution, by assuming that the transmit power of the relay is given, we theoretically derive the optimal values of computation task partition factors. Thus, the optimal solution to the total energy consumption minimization problem can be found by one-dimensional search over the transmit power of the relay. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme performs better than that where all computational tasks are allocated to the relay or users.

Seq-SetNet: Exploring Sequence Sets for Inferring Structures

Sequence set is a widely-used type of data source in a large variety of fields. A typical example is protein structure prediction, which takes an multiple sequence alignment (MSA) as input and aims to infer structural information from it. Almost all of the existing approaches exploit MSAs in an indirect fashion, i.e., they transform MSAs into position-specific scoring matrices (PSSM) that represent the distribution of amino acid types at each column. PSSM could capture column-wise characteristics of MSA, however, the column-wise characteristics embedded in each individual component sequence were nearly totally neglected. The drawback of PSSM is rooted in the fact that an MSA is essentially an unordered sequence set rather than a matrix. Specifically, the interchange of any two sequences will not affect the whole MSA. In contrast, the pixels in an image essentially form a matrix since any two rows of pixels cannot be interchanged. Therefore, the traditional deep neural networks designed for image processing cannot be directly applied on sequence sets. Here, we proposed a novel deep neural network framework (called Seq-SetNet) for sequence set processing. By employing a {\it symmetric function} module to integrate features calculated from preceding layers, Seq-SetNet are immune to the order of sequences in the input MSA. This advantage enables us to directly and fully exploit MSAs by considering each component protein individually. We evaluated Seq-SetNet by using it to extract structural information from MSA for protein secondary structure prediction. Experimental results on popular benchmark sets suggests that Seq-SetNet outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches by 3.6% in precision. These results clearly suggest the advantages of Seq-SetNet in sequence set processing and it can be readily used in a wide range of fields, say natural language processing.

Address Instance-level Label Prediction in Multiple Instance Learning

\textit{Multiple Instance Learning} (MIL) is concerned with learning from bags of instances, where only bag labels are given and instance labels are unknown. Existent approaches in this field were mainly designed for the bag-level label prediction (predict labels for bags) but not the instance-level (predict labels for instances), with the task loss being only defined at the bag level. This restricts their application in many tasks, where the instance-level labels are more interested. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm, whose loss is specifically defined at the instance level, to address instance-level label prediction in MIL. We prove that the loss of this algorithm can be unbiasedly and consistently estimated without using instance labels, under the i.i.d assumption. Empirical study validates the above statements and shows that the proposed algorithm can achieve superior instance-level and comparative bag-level performance, compared to state-of-the-art MIL methods. In addition, it shows that the proposed method can achieve similar results as the fully supervised model (trained with instance labels) for label prediction at the instance level.

Learning Task-specific Representation for Novel Words in Sequence Labeling

Word representation is a key component in neural-network-based sequence labeling systems. However, representations of unseen or rare words trained on the end task are usually poor for appreciable performance. This is commonly referred to as the out-of-vocabulary (OOV) problem. In this work, we address the OOV problem in sequence labeling using only training data of the task. To this end, we propose a novel method to predict representations for OOV words from their surface-forms (e.g., character sequence) and contexts. The method is specifically designed to avoid the error propagation problem suffered by existing approaches in the same paradigm. To evaluate its effectiveness, we performed extensive empirical studies on four part-of-speech tagging (POS) tasks and four named entity recognition (NER) tasks. Experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve better or competitive performance on the OOV problem compared with existing state-of-the-art methods.

Spin-Orbit Torque in a Single Ferromagnetic Layer with Large Spin-Orbit Coupling

Spin-orbit torque in heavy metal/ferromagnet heterostructures with broken spatial inversion symmetry provides an efficient mechanism for manipulating magnetization using a charge current. Here, we report the presence of a spin torque in a single ferromagnetic layer in both asymmetric MgO/Fe0.8Mn0.2 and symmetric MgO/Fe0.8Mn0.2/MgO structures, which manifests itself in the form of an effective field transverse to the charge current. The current to effective field conversion efficiency, which is characterized using both the nonlinear magnetoresistance and second-order planar Hall effect methods, is comparable to the efficiency in typical heavy metal/ferromagnet bilayers. We argue that the torque is caused by spin rotation in the vicinity of the surface via impurity scattering in the presence of a strong spin-orbit coupling. Instead of cancelling off with each other, the torques from the top and bottom surfaces simply add up, leading to a fairly large net torque, which is readily observed experimentally.

Switching 2D Magnetic States via Pressure Tuning of Layer Stacking

The physical properties of two-dimensional van der Waals (2D vdW) crystals depend sensitively on the interlayer coupling, which is intimately connected to the stacking arrangement and the interlayer spacing. For example, simply changing the twist angle between graphene layers can induce a variety of correlated electronic phases, which can be controlled further in a continuous manner by applying hydrostatic pressure to decrease the interlayer spacing. In the recently discovered 2D magnets, theory suggests that the interlayer exchange coupling strongly depends on layer separation, while the stacking arrangement can even change the sign of the magnetic exchange, thus drastically modifying the ground state. Here, we demonstrate pressure tuning of magnetic order in the 2D magnet CrI3. We probe the magnetic states using tunneling and scanning magnetic circular dichroism microscopy measurements. We find that the interlayer magnetic coupling can be more than doubled by hydrostatic pressure. In bilayer CrI3, pressure induces a transition from layered antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic phases. In trilayer CrI3, pressure can create coexisting domains of three phases, one ferromagnetic and two distinct antiferromagnetic. The observed changes in magnetic order can be explained by changes in the stacking arrangement. Such coupling between stacking order and magnetism provides ample opportunities for designer magnetic phases and functionalities.

Monopoles in non-Hermitian systems

The monopole for the geometric curvature is studied for non-Hermitian systems. We find that the monopole contains not only the exceptional points but also branch cuts. As the mathematical choice of branch cut in the complex plane is rather arbitrary, the monopole changes with the branch-cut choice. Despite this branch-cut dependence, our monopole is invariant under the $GL(l,\mathbb{C})$ gauge transformation that is inherent in non-Hermitian systems. Although our results are generic, they are presented in the context of a two-mode non-Hermitian Dirac model. A corresponding two-mode Hermitian system is also discussed to illustrate the essential difference between monopoles in Hermitian systems and non-Hermitian systems.

A Unified Framework for Marketing Budget Allocation

While marketing budget allocation has been studied for decades in traditional business, nowadays online business brings much more challenges due to the dynamic environment and complex decision-making process. In this paper, we present a novel unified framework for marketing budget allocation. By leveraging abundant data, the proposed data-driven approach can help us to overcome the challenges and make more informed decisions. In our approach, a semi-black-box model is built to forecast the dynamic market response and an efficient optimization method is proposed to solve the complex allocation task. First, the response in each market-segment is forecasted by exploring historical data through a semi-black-box model, where the capability of logit demand curve is enhanced by neural networks. The response model reveals relationship between sales and marketing cost. Based on the learned model, budget allocation is then formulated as an optimization problem, and we design efficient algorithms to solve it in both continuous and discrete settings. Several kinds of business constraints are supported in one unified optimization paradigm, including cost upper bound, profit lower bound, or ROI lower bound. The proposed framework is easy to implement and readily to handle large-scale problems. It has been successfully applied to many scenarios in Alibaba Group. The results of both offline experiments and online A/B testing demonstrate its effectiveness.

Learning Fast Matching Models from Weak Annotations

This paper proposes a novel training scheme for fast matching models in Search Ads, which is motivated by the real challenges in model training. The first challenge stems from the pursuit of high throughput, which prohibits the deployment of inseparable architectures, and hence greatly limits the model accuracy. The second problem arises from the heavy dependency on human provided labels, which are expensive and time-consuming to collect, yet how to leverage unlabeled search log data is rarely studied. The proposed training framework targets on mitigating both issues, by treating the stronger but undeployable models as annotators, and learning a deployable model from both human provided relevance labels and weakly annotated search log data. Specifically, we first construct multiple auxiliary tasks from the enumerated relevance labels, and train the annotators by jointly learning from those related tasks. The annotation models are then used to assign scores to both labeled and unlabeled training samples. The deployable model is firstly learnt on the scored unlabeled data, and then fine-tuned on scored labeled data, by leveraging both labels and scores via minimizing the proposed label-aware weighted loss. According to our experiments, compared with the baseline that directly learns from relevance labels, training by the proposed framework outperforms it by a large margin, and improves data efficiency substantially by dispensing with 80% labeled samples. The proposed framework allows us to improve the fast matching model by learning from stronger annotators while keeping its architecture unchanged. Meanwhile, our training framework offers a principled manner to leverage search log data in the training phase, which could effectively alleviate our dependency on human provided labels.

Posterior-regularized REINFORCE for Instance Selection in Distant Supervision

This paper provides a new way to improve the efficiency of the REINFORCE training process. We apply it to the task of instance selection in distant supervision. Modeling the instance selection in one bag as a sequential decision process, a reinforcement learning agent is trained to determine whether an instance is valuable or not and construct a new bag with less noisy instances. However unbiased methods, such as REINFORCE, could usually take much time to train. This paper adopts posterior regularization (PR) to integrate some domain-specific rules in instance selection using REINFORCE. As the experiment results show, this method remarkably improves the performance of the relation classifier trained on cleaned distant supervision dataset as well as the efficiency of the REINFORCE training.
