Variational Bayesian Line Spectral Estimation with Multiple Measurement Vectors

In this paper, the line spectral estimation (LSE) problem with multiple measurement vectors (MMVs) is studied utilizing the Bayesian methods. Motivated by the recently proposed variational line spectral estimation (VALSE) method, we develop the multisnapshot VALSE (MVALSE) for multi snapshot scenarios, which is especially important in array signal processing. The MVALSE shares the advantages of the VALSE method, such as automatically estimating the model order, noise variance, weight variance, and providing the uncertain degrees of the frequency estimates. It is shown that the MVALSE can be viewed as applying the VALSE with single measurement vector (SMV) to each snapshot, and combining the intermediate data appropriately. Furthermore, the Seq-MVALSE is developed to perform sequential estimation. Finally, numerical results are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the MVALSE method, compared to the state-of-the-art methods in the MMVs setting.

Gridless Line Spectral Estimation with Multiple Measurement Vector via Variational Bayesian Inference

Line spectral estimation (LSE) from multi snapshot samples is studied utilizing the variational Bayesian methods. Motivated by the recently proposed variational line spectral estimation (VALSE) method for a single snapshot, we develop the multisnapshot VALSE (MVALSE) for multi snapshot scenarios, which is important for array processing. The MVALSE shares the advantages of the VALSE method, such as automatically estimating the model order, noise variance and weight variance, closed-form updates of the posterior probability density function (PDF) of the frequencies. By using multiple snapshots, MVALSE improves the recovery performance and it encodes the prior distribution naturally. Finally, numerical results demonstrate the competitive performance of the MVALSE compared to state-of-the-art methods.

Anisotropic structural dynamics of monolayer crystals revealed by femtosecond surface x-ray scattering

X-ray scattering is one of the primary tools to determine crystallographic configuration with atomic accuracy. However, the measurement of ultrafast structural dynamics in monolayer crystals remains a long-standing challenge due to a significant reduction of diffraction volume and complexity of data analysis, prohibiting the application of ultrafast x-ray scattering to study nonequilibrium structural properties at the two-dimensional limit. Here, we demonstrate femtosecond surface x-ray diffraction in combination with crystallographic model-refinement calculations to quantify the ultrafast structural dynamics of monolayer WSe$_2$ crystals supported on a substrate. We found the absorbed optical photon energy is preferably coupled to the in-plane lattice vibrations within 2 picoseconds while the out-of-plane lattice vibration amplitude remains unchanged during the first 10 picoseconds. The model-assisted fitting suggests an asymmetric intralayer spacing change upon excitation. The observed nonequilibrium anisotropic structural dynamics in two-dimensional materials agrees with first-principles nonadiabatic modeling in both real and momentum space, marking the distinct structural dynamics of monolayer crystals from their bulk counterparts. The demonstrated methods unlock the benefit of surface sensitive x-ray scattering to quantitatively measure ultrafast structural dynamics in atomically thin materials and across interfaces.

Long Short-Term Memory with Dynamic Skip Connections

In recent years, long short-term memory (LSTM) has been successfully used to model sequential data of variable length. However, LSTM can still experience difficulty in capturing long-term dependencies. In this work, we tried to alleviate this problem by introducing a dynamic skip connection, which can learn to directly connect two dependent words. Since there is no dependency information in the training data, we propose a novel reinforcement learning-based method to model the dependency relationship and connect dependent words. The proposed model computes the recurrent transition functions based on the skip connections, which provides a dynamic skipping advantage over RNNs that always tackle entire sentences sequentially. Our experimental results on three natural language processing tasks demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve better performance than existing methods. In the number prediction experiment, the proposed model outperformed LSTM with respect to accuracy by nearly 20%.

Non-Hermitian quantum systems and their geometric phases

We discuss the basic theoretical framework for non-Hermitian quantum systems with particular emphasis on the diagonalizability of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians and their $GL(1,\mathbb{C})$ gauge freedom, which are relevant to the adiabatic evolution of non-Hermitian quantum systems. We find that the adiabatic evolution is possible only when the eigen-energies are real. The accompanying geometric phase is found to be generally complex and associated with not only the phase of a wavefunction but also its amplitude. The condition for the real geometric phase is laid out. Our results are illustrated with two examples of non-Hermitian $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric systems, the two-dimensional non-Hermitian Dirac fermion model and bosonic Bogoliubov quasi-particles.

Sequence Block based Compressed Sensing Multiuser Detection for 5G

Compressed sensing based multiuser detection (CSMUD) is a promising candidate to cope with the massive connectivity requirements of the massive machine type communication (mMTC) in the fifth generation (5G) wireless communication system. It facilitates grant-free non-orthogonal code division multiple access (CDMA) to accommodate massive number of IoT devices. In non-orthogonal CDMA, the users are assigned with non-orthogonal sequences which serve as their signatures. However, the activity detection which is based on the correlation between the spreading sequences, degrades with increase in the number of users, especially in the lower SNR region. In this paper, to improve the performance of the CSMUD, we propose a sequence block based CSMUD, in which block of sequences is used as signature of the user instead of single sequence. A sequence block based group orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm is proposed to jointly detect the activity and data. The proposed scheme reduces the detection error rate (DER) by a magnitude of two at SNR = 10 dB in a system where the number of users are three times more than the number of available resources with each user having activity probability of 0.1. The DER of the proposed scheme is below 10^-2 even at activity probability of 0.16 for sequence length of 20 and overloading factor of 300%. Furthermore, at SNR = 10 dB, the DER of the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional scheme by a magnitude of one for a system with overloading factor of 500%.

Novel Codebook-based MC-CDMA with Compressive Sensing Multiuser Detection for Sporadic mMTC

Massive machine type communication (mMTC) is one of the basic components of the future fifth generation (5G) wireless communication system. In mMTC, the information processing at the sensor nodes is required to be simple, low power consuming and spectral efficient. In order to increase the spectral efficiency at the cost of minimum performance loss and to simplify the information processing at the sensor node, in this paper a codebook based spreading technique is proposed. In the proposed scheme, first, the modulation and spreading are combined into a direct symbol-to-sequence spreader, which directly maps the input bits into a codeword from the user specific codebook. Secondly, utilizing the sporadic node activity of the mMTC a compressive sensing based algorithm is designed for multiuser activity and data detection. Exploiting the multidimensional structure of the codebook, the required signal to noise ratio (SNR) to increase the modulation order, is reduced as compared to the conventional scheme. Besides reducing the power consumption, it is shown that for modulation order of eight, the proposed scheme achieves a gain of 1 dB over the conventional scheme at bit error rate (BER) of 10^-5. However, more sophisticated decoding algorithm is required to achieve the performance gain at a lower modulation order.

Permissioned Blockchain Technologies for Academic Publishing

Academic publishing is continuously evolving with the gradual adoption of new technologies. Blockchain is a new technology that promises to change how individuals and organizations interact across various boundaries. The adoption of blockchains is beginning to transform diverse industries such as finance, supply chain, international trade, as well as energy and resource management and many others. Through trust, data immutability, decentralized distribution of data, and facilitation of collaboration without the need for centralized management and authority, blockchains have the potential to transform the academic publishing domain and to address some of the current problems such as productivity and reputation management, predatory publishing, transparent peer-review processes and many others. In this paper, we outline the technologies available in the domain of permissioned blockchains with focus on Hyperledger Fabric and discuss how they can be leveraged in the domain of academic publishing.

Predicting protein inter-residue contacts using composite likelihood maximization and deep learning

Accurate prediction of inter-residue contacts of a protein is important to calcu- lating its tertiary structure. Analysis of co-evolutionary events among residues has been proved effective to inferring inter-residue contacts. The Markov ran- dom field (MRF) technique, although being widely used for contact prediction, suffers from the following dilemma: the actual likelihood function of MRF is accurate but time-consuming to calculate, in contrast, approximations to the actual likelihood, say pseudo-likelihood, are efficient to calculate but inaccu- rate. Thus, how to achieve both accuracy and efficiency simultaneously remains a challenge. In this study, we present such an approach (called clmDCA) for contact prediction. Unlike plmDCA using pseudo-likelihood, i.e., the product of conditional probability of individual residues, our approach uses composite- likelihood, i.e., the product of conditional probability of all residue pairs. Com- posite likelihood has been theoretically proved as a better approximation to the actual likelihood function than pseudo-likelihood. Meanwhile, composite likelihood is still efficient to maximize, thus ensuring the efficiency of clmDCA. We present comprehensive experiments on popular benchmark datasets, includ- ing PSICOV dataset and CASP-11 dataset, to show that: i) clmDCA alone outperforms the existing MRF-based approaches in prediction accuracy. ii) When equipped with deep learning technique for refinement, the prediction ac- curacy of clmDCA was further significantly improved, suggesting the suitability of clmDCA for subsequent refinement procedure. We further present successful application of the predicted contacts to accurately build tertiary structures for proteins in the PSICOV dataset. Accessibility: The software clmDCA and a server are publicly accessible through http://protein.ict.ac.cn/clmDCA/.

Vector Approximate Message Passing Algorithm for Structured Perturbed Sensing Matrix

In this paper, we consider a general form of noisy compressive sensing (CS) where the sensing matrix is not precisely known. Such cases exist when there are imperfections or unknown calibration parameters during the measurement process. Particularly, the sensing matrix may have some structure, which makes the perturbation follow a fixed pattern. While previous work has focused on extending the approximate message passing (AMP) and LASSO algorithm to deal with the independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) perturbation, we propose the robust variant vector approximate message passing (VAMP) algorithm with the perturbation being structured, based on the recent VAMP algorithm. The performance of the robust version of VAMP is demonstrated numerically.

A Generic Multi-Projection-Center Model and Calibration Method for Light Field Cameras

Light field cameras can capture both spatial and angular information of light rays, enabling 3D reconstruction by a single exposure. The geometry of 3D reconstruction is affected by intrinsic parameters of a light field camera significantly. In the paper, we propose a multi-projection-center (MPC) model with 6 intrinsic parameters to characterize light field cameras based on traditional two-parallel-plane (TPP) representation. The MPC model can generally parameterize light field in different imaging formations, including conventional and focused light field cameras. By the constraints of 4D ray and 3D geometry, a 3D projective transformation is deduced to describe the relationship between geometric structure and the MPC coordinates. Based on the MPC model and projective transformation, we propose a calibration algorithm to verify our light field camera model. Our calibration method includes a close-form solution and a non-linear optimization by minimizing re-projection errors. Experimental results on both simulated and real scene data have verified the performance of our algorithm.

Experimental Observation of a Generalized Thouless Pump with a Single Spin

Adiabatic cyclic modulation of a one-dimensional periodic potential will result in quantized charge transport, which is termed the Thouless pump. In contrast to the original Thouless pump restricted by the topology of the energy band, here we experimentally observe a generalized Thouless pump that can be extensively and continuously controlled. The extraordinary features of the new pump originate from interband coherence in nonequilibrium initial states, and this fact indicates that a quantum superposition of different eigenstates individually undergoing quantum adiabatic following can also be an important ingredient unavailable in classical physics. The quantum simulation of this generalized Thouless pump in a two-band insulator is achieved by applying delicate control fields to a single spin in diamond. The experimental results demonstrate all principal characteristics of the generalized Thouless pump. Because the pumping in our system is most pronounced around a band-touching point, this work also suggests an alternative means to detect quantum or topological phase transitions.

A Comparative Study of Containers and Virtual Machines in Big Data Environment

Container technique is gaining increasing attention in recent years and has become an alternative to traditional virtual machines. Some of the primary motivations for the enterprise to adopt the container technology include its convenience to encapsulate and deploy applications, lightweight operations, as well as efficiency and flexibility in resources sharing. However, there still lacks an in-depth and systematic comparison study on how big data applications, such as Spark jobs, perform between a container environment and a virtual machine environment. In this paper, by running various Spark applications with different configurations, we evaluate the two environments from many interesting aspects, such as how convenient the execution environment can be set up, what are makespans of different workloads running in each setup, how efficient the hardware resources, such as CPU and memory, are utilized, and how well each environment can scale. The results show that compared with virtual machines, containers provide a more easy-to-deploy and scalable environment for big data workloads. The research work in this paper can help practitioners and researchers to make more informed decisions on tuning their cloud environment and configuring the big data applications, so as to achieve better performance and higher resources utilization.

Fast and robust control of two interacting spins

Rapid preparation, manipulation, and correction of spin states with high fidelity are requisite for quantum information processing and quantum computing. In this paper, we propose a fast and robust approach for controlling two spins with Heisenberg and Ising interactions. By using the concept of shortcuts to adiabaticity, we first inverse design the driving magnetic fields for achieving fast spin flip or generating the entangled Bell state, and further optimize them with respect to the error and fluctuation. In particular, the designed shortcut protocols can efficiently suppress the unwanted transition or control error induced by anisotropic antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange. Several examples and comparisons are illustrated, showing the advantages of our methods. Finally, we emphasize that the results can be naturally extended to multiple interacting spins and other quantum systems in an analogous fashion.

LedgerGuard: Improving Blockchain Ledger Dependability

The rise of crypto-currencies has spawned great interest in their underlying technology, namely, Blockchain. The central component in a Blockchain is a shared distributed ledger. A ledger comprises series of blocks, which in turns contains a series of transactions. An identical copy of the ledger is stored on all nodes in a blockchain network. Maintaining ledger integrity and security is one of the crucial design aspects of any blockchain platform. Thus, there are typically built-in validation mechanisms leveraging cryptography to ensure the validity of incoming blocks before committing them into the ledger. However, a blockchain node may run over an extended period of time, during which the blocks on the disk can may become corrupted due to software or hardware failures, or due to malicious activity. This paper proposes LedgerGuard, a tool to maintain ledger integrity by detecting corrupted blocks and recovering these blocks by synchronizing with rest of the network. The experimental implementation of LedgerGuard is based on Hyperledger Fabric, which is a popular open source permissioned blockchain platform.

Hybrid Point Cloud Attribute Compression Using Slice-based Layered Structure and Block-based Intra Prediction

Point cloud compression is a key enabler for the emerging applications of immersive visual communication, autonomous driving and smart cities, etc. In this paper, we propose a hybrid point cloud attribute compression scheme built on an original layered data structure. First, a slice-partition scheme and geometry-adaptive k dimensional-tree (kd-tree) method are devised to generate the four-layer structure. Second, we introduce an efficient block-based intra prediction scheme containing a DC prediction mode and several angular modes, in order to exploit the spatial correlation between adjacent points. Third, an adaptive transform scheme based on Graph Fourier Transform (GFT) is Lagrangian optimized to achieve better transform efficiency. The Lagrange multiplier is off-line derived based on the statistics of color attribute coding. Last but not least, multiple reordering scan modes are dedicated to improve coding efficiency for entropy coding. In intra-frame compression of point cloud color attributes, results demonstrate that our method performs better than the state-of-the-art region-adaptive hierarchical transform (RAHT) system, and on average a 29.37$\%$ BD-rate gain is achieved. Comparing with the test model for category 1 (TMC1) anchor's coding results, which were recently published by MPEG-3DG group on 121st meeting, a 16.37$\%$ BD-rate gain is obtained.

Fast-Responding Property of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in Rydberg Atoms

We investigate the transient optical response property of an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a cold Rydberg atomic gas. We show that both the transient behavior and the steady-state EIT spectrum of the system depend strongly on Rydberg interaction. Especially, the response speed of the Rydberg-EIT can be five-times faster (and even higher) than the conventional EIT without the Rydberg interaction. For comparison, two different theoretical approaches (i.e. two-atom model and many-atom model) are considered, revealing that Rydberg blockade effect plays a significant role for increasing the response speed of the Rydberg-EIT. The fast-responding Rydberg-EIT by using the strong, tunable Rydberg interaction uncovered here is not only helpful for enhancing the understanding of the many-body dynamics of Rydberg atoms but also useful for practical applications in quantum information processing by using Rydberg atoms.
