Intrinsic Dynamical Fluctuation Assisted Symmetry Breaking in Adiabatic Following

Classical adiabatic invariants in actual adiabatic processes possess intrinsic dynamical fluctuations. The magnitude of such intrinsic fluctuations is often thought to be negligible. This widely believed physical picture is contested here. For adiabatic following of a moving stable fixed-point solution facing a pitchfork bifurcation, we show that intrinsic dynamical fluctuations in an adiabatic process can assist in a deterministic and robust selection between two symmetry-connected fixed-point solutions, irrespective of the rate of change of adiabatic parameters. Using a classical model Hamiltonian also relevant to a two-mode quantum system, we further demonstrate the formation of an adiabatic hysteresis loop in purely Hamiltonian mechanics and the generation of a Berry phase via changing one single-valued parameter only.

An experimental test of the non-classicality of quantum mechanics using an unmovable and indivisible system

Quantum mechanics provides a statistical description about nature, and thus would be incomplete if its statistical predictions could not be accounted for by some realistic models with hidden variables. There are, however, two powerful theorems against the hidden-variable theories showing that certain quantum features cannot be reproduced based on two rationale premises of locality, Bell's theorem, and noncontextuality, due to Bell, Kochen and Specker (BKS). Noncontextuality is independent of nonlocality, and the contextuality manifests itself even in a single object. Here we report an experimental verification of quantum contextuality by a single spin-1 electron system at room temperature. Such a three-level system is indivisible and then we close the compatibility loophole which exists in the experiments performed on bipartite systems. Our results confirm the quantum contextuality to be the intrinsic property of single particles.

Synthetic Spin-Orbit Coupling in Two-level Cold Atoms

Synthetic spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in controlled quantum systems such as cold atoms or trapped ions has been of great interest. Here we show, both theoretically and computationally, a simplest realization of SOC using two-level cold atoms interacting with only one laser beam. The underlying mechanism is based upon the non-adiabatic nature of laser-atom interaction, with the Rabi frequency and atom's kinetic energy being comparable to each other. We use the Zitterbewegung (ZB) oscillation to further illustrate the effects of the synthesized SOC on the quantum dynamics of the two-level cold atoms. We expect our proposal to be of experimental interest in quantum simulation of SOC-related physics.

On a question of Demailly-Peternell-Schneider

This note aims to give an affirmative answer to an open question posed by Demailly-Peternell-Schneider [DPS] in 2001 and recently by Peternell [P] again. Let $f:X\mapsto Y$ be a surjective morphism from a log canonical pair (X,D) onto a ${\mathbb Q}$-Gorenstein variety $Y$. If $-(K_X+D)$ is nef, we show that $-K_Y$ is pseudo-effective.

Terahertz and Infrared Spectroscopy of Gated Large-Area Graphene

We have fabricated a centimeter-size single-layer graphene device, with a gate electrode, which can modulate the transmission of terahertz and infrared waves. Using time-domain terahertz spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy in a wide frequency range (10-10000 cm^{-1}), we measured the dynamic conductivity change induced by electrical gating and thermal annealing. Both methods were able to effectively tune the Fermi energy, E_F, which in turn modified the Drude-like intraband absorption in the terahertz as well as the '2E_F onset' for interband absorption in the mid-infrared. These results not only provide fundamental insight into the electromagnetic response of Dirac fermions in graphene but also demonstrate the key functionalities of large-area graphene devices that are desired for components in terahertz and infrared optoelectronics.

Dynamical fluctuations in classical adiabatic processes: General description and their implications

Dynamical fluctuations in classical adiabatic processes are not considered by the conventional classical adiabatic theorem. In this work a general result is derived to describe the intrinsic dynamical fluctuations in classical adiabatic processes. Interesting implications of our general result are discussed via two subtopics, namely, an intriguing adiabatic geometric phase in a dynamical model with an adiabatically moving fixed-point solution, and the possible "pollution" to Hannay's angle or to other adiabatic phase objects for adiabatic processes involving non-fixed-point solutions.

SPDEs with Polynomial Growth Coefficients and Malliavin Calculus Method

In this paper we study the existence and uniqueness of the $L_ρ^{2p}(\mathbb{R}^d;\mathbb{R}^1)\times L_ρ^2(\mathbb{R}^d;\mathbb{R}^d)$ valued solution of backward doubly stochastic differential equations with polynomial growth coefficients using week convergence, equivalence of norm principle and Wiener-Sobolev compactness arguments. Then we establish a new probabilistic representation of the weak solutions of SPDEs with polynomial growth coefficients through the solutions of the corresponding backward doubly stochastic differential equations (BDSDEs). This probabilistic representation is then used to prove the existence of stationary solution of SPDEs on $\mathbb{R}^d$ via infinite horizon BDSDEs. The convergence of the solution of BDSDE to the solution of infinite horizon BDSDEs is shown to be equivalent to the convergence of the pull-back of the solutions of SPDEs. With this we obtain the stability of the stationary solutions as well.

A General Construction to Stationary Weak Solutions of Parabolic SPDEs

In this paper we construct the stationary weak solutions of parabolic SPDEs by a general infinite horizon backward doubly stochastic differential equations (BDSDEs for short) with non-degenerate terminal functions. For this, we first study the existence, uniqueness and stationarity of solutions of such kind of BDSDEs in weighted $L^p(dx)\bigotimes L^2(dx)$ space ($p>2$). Then the corresponding stationary solutions of parabolic SPDEs can be obtained by the connection between the solutions of BDSDEs in weighted $L^p(dx)\bigotimes L^2(dx)$ space and the weak solutions of parabolic SPDEs. This result shows that the stationary solutions of SPDEs can be constructed by their corresponding infinite horizon BDSDEs with any Lipschitz continuous terminal function.

Semi-linear Degenerate Backward Stochastic Partial Differential Equations and Associated Forward Backward Stochastic Differential Equations

In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem of semi-linear degenerate backward stochastic partial differential equations (BSPDEs in short) under general settings without technical assumptions on the coefficients. For the solution of semi-linear degenerate BSPDE, we first give a proof for its existence and uniqueness, as well as regularity. Then the connection between semi-linear degenerate BSPDEs and forward backward stochastic differential equations (FBSDEs in short) is established, which can be regarded as an extension of Feynman-Kac formula to non-Markov frame.

Converting Zitterbewegung Oscillation to Directed Motion

Zitterbewegung oscillation (ZB), namely, the jittering center-of-mass motion predicted by free space Dirac (or Dirac-like) equations, has been studied in several different contexts. It is shown here that ZB can be converted to directed center-of-mass motion by a modulation of the Dirac-like equation, if the modulation is on resonance with the ZB frequency. Tailored modulation may also stop, re-launch or even reverse the directed motion of a wavepacket with negligible distortion. The predictions may be examined by current ZB experiments using trapped-ion systems.

$W^{m,p}$-Solution ($p\geq2$) of Linear Degenerate Backward Stochastic Partial Differential Equations in the Whole Space

In this paper, we consider the backward Cauchy problem of linear degenerate stochastic partial differential equations. We obtain the existence and uniqueness results in Sobolev space $L^p(Ω; C([0,T];W^{m,p}))$ with both $m\geq 1$ and $p\geq 2$ being arbitrary, without imposing the symmetry condition for the coefficient $σ$ of the gradient of the second unknown---which was introduced by Ma and Yong [Prob. Theor. Relat. Fields 113 (1999)] in the case of $p=2$. To illustrate the application, we give a maximum principle for optimal control of degenerate stochastic partial differential equations.

Probabilistic Representation of Weak Solutions of Partial Differential Equations with Polynomial Growth Coefficients

In this paper we develop a new weak convergence and compact embedding method to study the existence and uniqueness of the $L_ρ^2({\mathbb{R}^{d}};{\mathbb{R}^{1}})\otimes L_ρ^2({\mathbb{R}^{d}};{\mathbb{R}^{d}})$ valued solution of backward stochastic differential equations with p-growth coefficients. Then we establish the probabilistic representation of the weak solution of PDEs with p-growth coefficients via corresponding BSDEs.

Optimal Variational Principle for Backward Stochastic Control Systems Associated with Lévy Processes

The paper is concerned with optimal control of backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE) driven by Teugel's martingales and an independent multi-dimensional Brownian motion, where Teugel's martingales are a family of pairwise strongly orthonormal martingales associated with Lévy processes (see Nualart and Schoutens \cite{NuSc}). We derive the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of the optimal control by means of convex variation methods and duality techniques. As an application, the optimal control problem of linear backward stochastic differential equation with a quadratic cost criteria (called backward linear-quadratic problem, or BLQ problem for short) is discussed and characterized by stochastic Hamilton system.

Control of Tripod-Scheme Cold-Atom Wavepackets by Manipulating a non-Abelian Vector Potential

Tripod-scheme cold atoms interacting with laser beams have attracted considerable interest for their role in synthesizing effective non-Abelian vector potentials. Such effective vector potentials can be exploited to realize an all-optical imprinting of geometric phases onto matter waves. By working on carefully designed extensions of our previous work, we show that coherent lattice structure of cold-atom sub-wavepackets can be formed and that the non-Abelian Aharonov-Bohm effect can be easily manifested via the translational motion of cold atoms. We also show that by changing the frame of reference, effects due to a non-Abelian vector potential may be connected with a simple dynamical phase effect, and that under certain conditions it can be understood as an Abelian geometric phase in a different frame of reference. Results should help design better schemes for the control of cold-atom matter waves.

Driven Dirac-like Equation via Mirror Oscillation: Controlled Cold-Atom Zitterbewegung

By considering mirror oscillation in a "tripod-scheme" laser-atom system, we advocate explorative studies of driven Dirac-like equations. Both analytical and numerical studies show that mirror oscillation can be used to drive an effective spin-orbit interaction and hence control the amplitude, the frequency, and the damping of the cold-atom Zitterbewegung oscillation. Our results demonstrate an interesting coupling between the mirror mechanical motion and a fundamental quantum coherent oscillation, opening up new means of matter wave manipulation.

Stationary Stochastic Viscosity Solutions of SPDEs

In this paper we aim to find the stationary stochastic viscosity solutions of a parabolic type SPDEs through the infinite horizon backward doubly stochastic differential equations (BDSDEs). For this, we study the existence, uniqueness and regularity of solutions of the corresponding infinite horizon BDSDEs as well as the "perfection procedure" applied to the solutions of BDSDEs. At last the "perfect" stationary stochastic viscosity solutions of SPDEs constructed by solutions of corresponding BDSDEs are obtained.

All-optical Imprinting of Geometric Phases onto Matter Waves

Traditional optical phase imprinting of matter waves is of a dynamical nature. In this paper we show that both Abelian and non-Abelian geometric phases can be optically imprinted onto matter waves, yielding a number of interesting phenomena such as wavepacket re-directing and wavepacket splitting. In addition to their fundamental interest, our results open up new opportunities for robust optical control of matter waves.

Superconductivity and quantum oscillations in crystalline Bi nanowires

While bulk bismuth (Bi) is a semimetal, we have found clear evidence of superconductivity in a crystalline 72 nm diameter Bi nanowire below 1.3 K. In a parallel magnetic field (H), the residual resistance of the nanowire below Tc displays periodic oscillations with H, and the period corresponds to the superconducting flux quantum. This result provides evidence that the superconductivity comes from the interface shell between Bi and the surface oxide. In a perpendicular H, the resistance in the superconducting state shows Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations, a signature of a normal metal. These results indicate a novel coexistence of Bosonic and Fermionic states in the surface shell of nanowires.
