Quantum thermal transistor based on the qubit-qutrit coupling

A quantum thermal transistor is designed by the strong coupling between one qubit and one qutrit which are in contact with three heat baths with different temperatures. The thermal behavior is analyzed based on the master equation by both the numerical and the approximately analytic methods. It is shown that the thermal transistor, as a three-terminal device, allows a weak modulation heat current (at the modulation terminal) to switch on/off and effectively modulate the heat current between the other two terminals. In particular, the weak modulation heat current can induce the strong heat current between the other two terminals with the multiple-region amplification of heat current. Furthermore, the heat currents are quite robust to the temperature (current) fluctuation at the lower-temperature terminal within certain range of temperature, so it can behave as a heat current stabilizer.

Superconductivity in Bi3O2S2Cl with Bi-Cl Planar Layers

A quaternary compound Bi3O2S2Cl, which consists of novel [BiS2Cl]2-layers, is reported. It adopts a layered structure of the space group I4/mmm (No. 139) with lattice parameters: a = 3.927(1) Å, c = 21.720(5) Å. In this compound, bismuth and chlorine atoms form an infinite planar layer, which is unique among the bismuth halides. Superconductivity is observed in both polycrystals and single crystals, and is significantly enhanced in the samples prepared with less sulfur or at higher temperatures. By tuning the content of sulfur, Bi3O2S2Cl can be converted from a semiconductor into a superconductor. The superconducting critical temperature ranges from 2.6 K to 3.5 K. Our discovery of the [BiS2Cl]2- layer opens another door in searching for the bismuth compounds with novel physical properties.

Multifunctional quantum thermal device utilizing three qubits

Quantum thermal devices which can manage heat as their electronic analogues for the electronic currents have attracted increasing attention. Here a three-terminal quantum thermal device is designed by three coupling qubits interacting with three heat baths with different temperatures. Based on the steady-state behavior solved from the dynamics of this system, it is demonstrated that such a device integrates multiple interesting thermodynamic functions. It can serve as a heat current transistor to use the weak heat current at one terminal to effectively amplify the currents through the other two terminals, to continuously modulate them ranging in a large amplitude, and even to switch on/off the heat currents. It is also found that the three currents are not sensitive to the fluctuation of the temperature at the low temperature terminal, so it can behave as a thermal stabilizer. In addition, we can utilize one terminal temperature to ideally turn off the heat current at any one terminal and to allow the heat currents through the other two terminals, so it can be used as a thermal valve. Finally, we illustrate that this thermal device can control the heat currents to flow unidirectionally, so it has the function as a thermal rectifier.

Heat kernel approach for confined quantum gas

In this paper, based on the heat kernel technique, we calculate equations of state and thermodynamic quantities for ideal quantum gases in confined space with external potential. Concretely, we provide expressions for equations of state and thermodynamic quantities by means of heat kernel coefficients for ideal quantum gases. Especially, using an analytic continuation treatment, we discuss the application of the heat kernel technique to Fermi gases in which the expansion diverges when the fugacity $z>1$. In order to calculate the modification of heat kernel coefficients caused by external potentials, we suggest an approach for calculating the expansion of the global heat kernel of the operator $-Δ+U\left( x\right) $ based on an approximate method of the calculation of spectrum in quantum mechanics. At last, we discuss the properties of quantum gases under the condition of weak and complete degeneration, respectively.

Creation of superposition of arbitrary states encoded in two three-dimensional cavities

The principle of superposition is a key ingredient for quantum mechanics. A recent work [M. Oszmaniec et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 110403 (2016)] has shown that a quantum adder that deterministically generates a superposition of two unknown states is forbidden. Here we propose a probabilistic approach for creating a superposition state of two arbitrary states encoded in two three-dimensional cavities. Our implementation is based on a three-level superconducting transmon qubit dispersively coupled to two cavities. Numerical simulations show that high-fidelity generation of the superposition of two coherent states is feasible with current circuit QED technology. Our method also works for other physical systems such as other types of superconducting qubits, natural atoms, quantum dots, and nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers.

A possible feedback mechanism of outflows from a black hole hyperaccretion disk in the center of jet-driven iPTF14hls

iPTF14hls is an unusually bright, long-lived II-P supernova (SN), whose light curve has at least five peaks. We propose that the outflows from the black hole hyperaccretion systems in the center of the collapsars should continuously inject into the envelope. For a jet-driven core-collapsar model, the outflow feedback results in prolonging the accretion timescale and fluctuating accretion rates in our analytic solutions. Thus, the long period of luminous, varying SN iPTF14hls might originate from the choked jets, which are regulated by the feedback of the strong disk outflows in a massive core-collapsar. One can expect that jet-driven iPTF14hls may last no more than approximately 3,000 days, and the luminosity may quickly decrease in the later stages. Moreover, the double-peak light curves in some SNe might be explained by the outflow feedback mechanism.

Twitter Job/Employment Corpus: A Dataset of Job-Related Discourse Built with Humans in the Loop

We present the Twitter Job/Employment Corpus, a collection of tweets annotated by a humans-in-the-loop supervised learning framework that integrates crowdsourcing contributions and expertise on the local community and employment environment. Previous computational studies of job-related phenomena have used corpora collected from workplace social media that are hosted internally by the employers, and so lacks independence from latent job-related coercion and the broader context that an open domain, general-purpose medium such as Twitter provides. Our new corpus promises to be a benchmark for the extraction of job-related topics and advanced analysis and modeling, and can potentially benefit a wide range of research communities in the future.

Constraint programming for flexible Service Function Chaining deployment

Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Software Defined Networking (SDN) are technologies that recently acquired a great momentum thanks to their promise of being a flexible and cost-effective solution for replacing hardware-based, vendor-dependent network middleboxes with software appliances running on general purpose hardware in the cloud. Delivering end-to-end networking services across multiple NFV/SDN network domains by implementing the so-called Service Function Chain (SFC) i.e., a sequence of Virtual Network Functions (VNF) that composes the service, is a challenging task. In this paper we address two crucial sub-problems of this task: i) the language to formalize the request of a given SFC to the network and ii) the solution of the SFC design problem, once the request is received. As for i) in our solution the request is built upon the intent-based approach, with a syntax that focuses on asking the user "what" she needs and not "how" it should be implemented, in a simple and high level language. Concerning ii) we define a formal model describing network architectures and VNF properties that is then used to solve the SFC design problem by means of Constraint Programming (CP), a programming paradigm which is often used in Artificial Intelligence applications. We argue that CP can be effectively used to address this kind of problems because it provides very expressive and flexible modeling languages which come with powerful solvers, thus providing efficient and scalable performance. We substantiate this claim by validating our tool on some typical and non trivial SFC design problems.

Black hole hyperaccretion inflow-outflow model. II. Long-duration gamma-ray bursts and supernova $\rm ^{56}Ni$ bumps

Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) associated with supernovae (SNe) are possibly born out of the death of a massive star. After the star collapses, a stellar-mass black hole (BH) is formed, surrounded by a hyperaccretion disk with outflows. Blandford-Znajek jets can be launched and then break out from the envelope to power LGRBs. The jet luminosity depends on the net inflow accretion rate at the inner radius of the disk. Furthermore, $\rm ^{56}Ni$ synthesis should occur in the strong outflows from the accretion disk. The decay of $\rm ^{56}Ni$ is considered to be the possible origin of SN bumps in the subsequent optical afterglows of LGRBs. If $\rm ^{56}Ni$ originates entirely from the outflows, there is competition between the luminosities of LGRBs and those of the corresponding $\rm ^{56}Ni$ bumps because of the material distribution between the disk inflows and outflows. In this paper, we investigated these two luminosities based on 15 cases of LGRB-SN in the framework of the BH hyperaccretion inflow-outflow model. Then, one can constrain the characteristics of the progenitor stars of these LGRBs. The results indicate that these LGRBs may originate from the low-metallicity ($Z\lesssim 10^{-2}Z_{\odot}$, where $Z$ and $Z_{\odot}$ are the metallicities of the stars and the Sun, respectively) stars or some massive solar-metallicity stars. For ultra-LGRBs (ULGRBs), such as GRB 111209A, most of the massive low-metallicity stars with $Z \lesssim 10^{-2}Z_{\odot}$ could be progenitors only if very strong outflows are launched from the disks. When the contributions of nucleosynthesis in the disk outflows are considered, there is no shortage of $\rm ^{56}Ni$ mass for luminous SNe associated with ULGRBs.

Superconductivity in LaPd2Bi2 with CaBe2Ge2-type structure

Here we report the synthesis and superconductivity of a novel ternary compound LaPd2Bi2. Shiny plate-like single crystals of LaPd2Bi2 were first synthesized by high-temperature solution method with PdBi flux. X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that LaPd2Bi2 belongs to the primitive tetragonal CaBe2Ge2-type structure with the space group P4/nmm (No. 129), and the refined lattice parameters are a = 4.717(2) Å, c = 9.957(3) Å. Electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal that LaPd2Bi2 undergoes a superconducting transition at 2.83 K and exhibits the characteristics of type-II superconductivity. The discovery of superconductivity in LaPd2Bi2 with CaBe2Ge2-type structure may help to further understand the possible relationship between the occurrence of superconductivity and the crystal structures in 122-type materials.

Multi-color blackbody emission in GRB 081221

The radiation mechanism of the prompt emission of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) remains an open question. Although their spectra are usually well fitted with the empirical Band function, which is widely believed to be fully non-thermal and interpreted as an optically thin synchrotron emission, accumulating evidence shows that a thermal component actually exists. In this paper, a multi-color blackbody (mBB) model is proposed for the time-integrated spectrum of GRB 081221 by assuming a power-law distribution of the thermal luminosities with temperature, which manifests photospheric emissions from a different radius and/or angle. The effects of the minimum temperature $kT_{\min }$, the maximum temperature $kT_{\max }$ and the power law index $m$ of the luminosity distribution of an mBB are discussed. The fitting to the time-integrated spectrum during the bright phase (from 20s to 30s since the trigger) of GRB 081221 by the mBB model yields $kT_{\min }$ = $4.4\pm 0.3$ keV, $kT_{\max }$ = 57.0 $_{-1.4}^{+1.6}$ keV, and $m=-0.46_{-0.06}^{+0.05}$. When the time bin is small enough, the time-resolved spectra of GRB 081221 are well fitted with a series of single-temperature blackbodies. Our results imply the prompt emission of GRB 081221 is dominated by the photosphere emission and its time-integrated spectrum is a superposition of pure blackbody components at different times, indicating that some empirical Band spectra may be interpreted as mBB if the temperature is widely distributed.

Superconductivity in novel quasi-one-dimensional ternary molybdenum pnictides Rb2Mo3As3 and Cs2Mo3As3

By replacing the alkali element in the newly discovered K2Mo3As3 superconductor, we successfully synthesized ternary molybdenum pnictides Rb2Mo3As3 and Cs2Mo3As3 through solid state reaction method. Powder X-ray diffraction analysis reveals the same quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) hexagonal crystal structure and space group of P-6m2 (No. 187) as K2Mo3As3. The refined lattice parameters are a = 10.432 (1) Å, c = 4.4615 (6) Å for Rb2Mo3As3 and a = 10.7405 (6) Å, c = 4.4654 (5) Å for Cs2Mo3As3. Electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility characterizations exhibit the occurrence of superconductivity in both compounds with the onset Tc at 10.6 K and 11.5 K for Rb2Mo3As3 and Cs2Mo3As3 respectively, which exhibit weak negative chemical pressure effect in these A2Mo3As3 (A = K, Rb, Cs) superconductors contrary to the isostructural A2Cr3As3 superconductors. More interestingly, the Cs2Mo3As3 superconductor exhibits much higher upper critical field around 60 T at zero temperature. The discovery of these MoAs/CrAs-based superconductors provide a unique platform for the study of exotic superconductivity correlated with both 3d and 4d electrons in these Q1D compounds.

A lower occurrence rate of bright X-ray flares in SN-GRBs than $z<1$ GRBs: evidence of energy partitions?

The occurrence rates of bright X-ray flares in z<1 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with or without observed supernovae (SNe) association were compared. Our Sample I: the z<1 long GRBs (LGRBs) with SNe association (SN-GRBs) and with early Swift/X-Ray Telescope (XRT) observations, consists of 18 GRBs, among which only two GRBs have bright X-ray flares. Our Sample II: for comparison, all the z<1 LGRBs without observed SNe association and with early Swift/XRT observations, consists of 45 GRBs, among which 16 GRBs present bright X-ray flares. Thus, the study indicates a lower occurrence rate of bright X-ray flares in Sample I (11.1%) than in Sample II (35.6%). In addition, if dim X-ray fluctuations are included as flares, then 16.7% of Sample I and 55.6% of Sample II are found to have flares, again showing the discrepancy between these two samples. We examined the physical origin of these bright X-ray flares and found that most of them are probably related to the central engine reactivity. To understand the discrepancy, we propose that such a lower occurrence rate of flares in the SN-GRB sample may hint at an energy partition among the GRB, SNe, and X-ray flares under a saturated energy budget of massive star explosion.

Superconductivity at 10.4 K in a novel quasi-one-dimensional ternary molybdenum pnictide K2Mo3As3

Here we report the discovery of the first ternary molybdenum pnictide based superconductor K2Mo3As3. Polycrystalline samples were synthesized by the conventional solid state reaction method. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals a quasi-one-dimensional hexagonal crystal structure with (Mo3As3)2- linear chains separated by K+ ions, similar as previously reported K2Cr3As3, with the space group of P-6m2 (No. 187) and the refined lattice parameters a = 10.145(5) Å and c = 4.453(8) Å. Electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements exhibit bulk superconductivity with the onset Tc at 10.4 K in K2Mo3As3 which is higher than the isostructural Cr-based superconductors. Being the same group VIB transition elements and with similar structural motifs, these Cr and Mo based superconductors may share some common underlying origins for the occurrence of superconductivity and need more investigations to uncover the electron pairing within a quasi-one-dimensional chain structure.

Topological phase transition in the quasiperiodic disordered Su-Schriffer-Heeger chain

We study the stability of the topological phase in one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain subject to the quasiperiodic hopping disorder. We investigate two different hopping disorder configurations, one is the Aubry-André quasiperiodic disorder without mobility edges and the other is the slowly varying quasiperiodic disorder with mobility edges. With the increment of the quasiperiodic disorder strength, the topological phase of the system transitions to a topologically trivial phase. Interestingly, we find the occurrence of the topological phase transition at the critical disorder strength which has an exact linear relation with the dimerization strength for both disorder configurations. We further investigate the localized property of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain with the slowly varying quasiperiodic disorder, and identify that there exist mobility edges in the spectrum when the dimerization strength is unequal to 1. These interesting features of models will shed light on the study of interplay between topological and disordered systems.

Outflows from black hole hyperaccretion systems: short and long-short gamma-ray bursts and "quasi-supernovae"

The detections of some long gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) relevant to mergers of neutron star (NS)-NS or black hole (BH)-NS, as well as some short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs) probably produced by collapsars, muddle the boundary of two categories of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). In both cases, a plausible candidate of central engine is a BH surrounded by a hyperaccretion disc with strong outflows, launching relativistic jets driven by Blandford-Znajek mechanism. In the framework of compact binary mergers, we test the applicability of the BH hyperaccretion inflow-outflow model on powering observed GRBs. We find that, for a low outflow ratio, $\sim 50\%$, postmerger hyperaccretion processes could power not only all SGRBs but also most of LGRBs. Some LGRBs might do originate from merger events in the BH hyperaccretion scenario, at least on the energy requirement. Moreover, kilonovae might be produced by neutron-rich outflows, and their luminosities and timescales significantly depend on the outflow strengths. GRBs and their associated kilonovae are competitive with each other on the disc mass and total energy budgets. The stronger the outflow, the more similar the characteristics of kilonovae to supernovae (SNe). This kind of `nova' might be called `quasi-SN'.

Novel mobility edges in the off-diagonal disordered tight-binding models

We study the one-dimensional tight-binding models which include a slowly varying, incommensurate off-diagonal modulation on the hopping amplitude. Interestingly, we find that the mobility edges can appear only when this off-diagonal (hopping) disorder is included in the model, which is different from the known results induced by the diagonal disorder. We further study the situation where the off-diagonal and diagonal disorder terms (the incommensurate potential) are both included and find that the locations of mobility edges change significantly and the varying trend of the mobility edge becomes nonsmooth. We first identify the exact expressions of mobility edges of both models by using asymptotic heuristic argument, and then verify the conclusions by utilizing several numerical diagnostic techniques, including the inverse participation ratio, the density of states and the Lyapunov exponent. This result will perspectives for future investigations on the mobility edge in low dimensional correlated disordered system.

Central Engine-Powered Bright X-ray Flares in Short Gamma-Ray Bursts: A Hint of Black Hole-Neutron Star Merger?

Short gamma-ray bursts may originate from the merger of double neutron stars (NS) or that of a black hole (BH) and an NS. We propose that the bright X-ray flare related to the central engine reactivity may hint a BH-NS merger, since such a merger can provide more fall-back materials and therefore a more massive accretion disk than the NS-NS merger. Based on the observed 49 short bursts with Swift/X-ray Telescope follow-up observations, we find that three bursts have bright X-ray flares, among which three flares from two bursts are probably related to the central engine reactivity. We argue that these two bursts may originate from the BH-NS merger rather than the NS-NS merger. Our suggested link between the central engine-powered bright X-ray flare and the BH-NS merger event can be checked by the future gravitational wave detections from advanced LIGO and Virgo.
