Segmentation of histological images and fibrosis identification with a convolutional neural network

Segmentation of histological images is one of the most crucial tasks for many biomedical analyses including quantification of certain tissue type. However, challenges are posed by high variability and complexity of structural features in such images, in addition to imaging artifacts. Further, the conventional approach of manual thresholding is labor-intensive, and highly sensitive to inter- and intra-image intensity variations. An accurate and robust automated segmentation method is of high interest. We propose and evaluate an elegant convolutional neural network (CNN) designed for segmentation of histological images, particularly those with Masson's trichrome stain. The network comprises of 11 successive convolutional - rectified linear unit - batch normalization layers, and outperformed state-of-the-art CNNs on a dataset of cardiac histological images (labeling fibrosis, myocytes, and background) with a Dice similarity coefficient of 0.947. With 100 times fewer (only 300 thousand) trainable parameters, our CNN is less susceptible to overfitting, and is efficient. Additionally, it retains image resolution from input to output, captures fine-grained details, and can be trained end-to-end smoothly. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first deep CNN tailored for the problem of concern, and may be extended to solve similar segmentation tasks to facilitate investigations into pathology and clinical treatment.

Loose crystalline lifts and overconvergence of étale $(φ, τ)$-modules

Let $p$ be a prime, $K$ a finite extension of $\mathbb Q_p$, and let $G_K$ be the absolute Galois group of $K$. The category of étale $(φ, τ)$-modules is equivalent to the category of $p$-adic Galois representations of $G_K$. In this paper, we show that all étale $(φ, τ)$-modules are overconvergent; this answers a question of Caruso. Our result is an analogy of the classical overconvergence result of Cherbonnier and Colmez in the setting of étale $(φ, Γ)$-modules. However, our method is completely different from theirs. Indeed, we first show that all $p$-power-torsion representations admit loose crystalline lifts; this allows us to construct certain Kisin models in these torsion representations. We study the structure of these Kisin models, and use them to build an overconvergence basis.

First Electromagnetic Pulse Associated with a Gravitational-Wave Event: Profile, Duration, and Delay

We study the first electromagnetic pulse after the gravitational wave chirp signal, focusing on the profile and duration. It is found that the light curve, especially the steep decay (SD) phase, can be very different by adopting different viewing angle $θ_{\rm view}$ on the jet shell. For an on-axis jet with a power-law radiation spectrum, the observed flux in the SD is proportional to $t_{\rm{obs}}^{-2-β}$ with $β$ being the spectral index and $t_{\rm{obs}}$ being the observer time. Here, $t_{\rm{obs}}=0$ is set at the observed time of the jet ejected from the central engine. The SD may become steep by increasing $θ_{\rm view}$. We also study the bolometric luminosity $L$ from a jet shell with a non-power-law radiation spectrum. For an on-axis jet, $L{\propto}t_{\rm{obs}}^{-3}$ is found in the SD. However, the SD is steeper than $L{\propto}t_{\rm{obs}}^{-3}$ for the radiation from an off-axis jet. The higher value of $θ_{\rm view}$ is, the steeper of SD would be. Then, we suggest that the SD phase can be used to discriminate an off-axis jet from an on-axis jet. The reason for above behaviors is discussed. In addition, we find that the duration of first electromagnetic pulse is close to its peak time, especially for $θ_{\rm{view}}\sim20^\circ$. This result is consistent with that found in GW~170817/GRB~170817A. Thus, the jet corresponding to the prompt emission of GRB~170817A should be immediately ejected after the merger. Our results also reveal that the duration of the first electromagnetic pulse can provide the information of the time to search gravitational waves.

Deterministic transfer of an unknown qutrit state assisted by the low-Q microwave resonators

Qutrits (i.e., three-level quantum systems) can be used to achieve many quantum information and communication tasks due to their large Hilbert spaces. In this work, we propose a scheme to transfer an unknown quantum state between two flux qutrits coupled to two superconducting coplanar waveguide resonators. The quantum state transfer can be deterministically achieved without measurements. Because resonator photons are virtually excited during the operation time, the decoherences caused by the resonator decay and the unwanted inter-resonator crosstalk are greatly suppressed. Moreover, our approach can be adapted to other solid-state qutrits coupled to circuit resonators. Numerical simulations show that the high-fidelity transfer of quantum state between the two qutrits is feasible with current circuit QED technology.

One-step implementation of a hybrid Fredkin gate with quantum memories and single superconducting qubit in circuit QED and its applications

In a recent remarkable experiment [R. B. Patel et al., Science advances 2, e1501531 (2016)], a 3-qubit quantum Fredkin (i.e., controlled-SWAP) gate was demonstrated by using linear optics. Here we propose a simple experimental scheme by utilizing the dispersive interaction in superconducting quantum circuit to implement a hybrid Fredkin gate with a superconducting flux qubit as the control qubit and two separated quantum memories as the target qudits. The quantum memories considered here are prepared by the superconducting coplanar waveguide resonators or nitrogen-vacancy center ensembles. In particular, it is shown that this Fredkin gate can be realized using a single-step operation and more importantly, each target qudit can be in an arbitrary state with arbitrary degrees of freedom. Furthermore, we show that this experimental scheme has many potential applications in quantum computation and quantum information processing such as generating arbitrary entangled states (discrete-variable states or continuous-variable states) of the two memories, measuring the fidelity and the entanglement between the two memories. With state-of-the-art circuit QED technology, the numerical simulation is performed to demonstrate that two-memory NOON states, entangled coherent states, and entangled cat states can be efficiently synthesized.

Compact binary merger and kilonova: outflows from remnant disc

Outflows launched from a remnant disc of compact binary merger may have essential contribution to the kilonova emission. Numerical calculations are conducted in this work to study the structure of accretion flows and outflows. By the incorporation of limited-energy advection in the hyper-accretion discs, outflows occur naturally from accretion flows due to imbalance between the viscous heating and the sum of the advective and radiative cooling. Following this spirit, we revisit the properties of the merger outflow ejecta. Our results show that around $10^{-3} \sim 10^{-1} M_\odot$ of the disc mass can be launched as powerful outflows. The amount of unbound mass varies with the disc mass and the viscosity. The outflow-contributed peak luminosity is around $10^{40} \sim 10^{41}$ erg/s. Such a scenario can account for the observed kilonovae associated with short gamma-ray bursts, including the recent event AT2017gfo (GW170817).

X-ray light curve in GRB 170714A: evidence for quark star?

Two plateaus and one following bump in the X-ray light curve of GRB 170714A have been detected by the \textit{Swift}/X-Ray Telescope, which could be very meaningful for the central engine of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), implying that the origin of this burst might be different from that of other ultra-long GRBs. We propose that merging two neutron stars into a hyper-massive quark star (QS) and then collapsing into a black hole (BH), with a delay time around $10^4$~s, could be responsible for those X-ray components. The hyper-massive QS is initially in a fluid state, being turbulent and differentially rotating, but would be solidified and release its latent heat injected into the GRB fireball (lasting about $10^3$~s during the liquid-solid phase transition). Magnetic field as high as $\sim 10^{15}$~G could be created by dynamo action of the newborn liquid QS, and a magnetar-like central engine (after solidification) supplies significant energy for the second plateau. More energy could be released during a fall-back accretion after the post-merger QS collapses to a BH, and the X-ray bump forms. This post-merger QS model might be tested by future observations, with either advanced gravitational wave detectors (e.g., advanced LIGO and VIRGO) or X-ray/optical telescopes.

A Black Hole - White Dwarf Compact Binary Model for Long Gamma-ray Bursts without Supernova Association

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are luminous and violent phenomena in the universe. Traditionally, long GRBs are expected to be produced by the collapse of massive stars and associated with supernovae. However, some low-redshift long GRBs have no detection of supernova association, such as GRBs 060505, 060614 and 111005A. It is hard to classify these events convincingly according to usual classifications, and the lack of the supernova implies a non-massive star origin. We propose a new path to produce long GRBs without supernova association, the unstable and extremely violent accretion in a contact binary system consisting of a stellar-mass black hole and a white dwarf, which fills an important gap in compact binary evolution.

Ion-exchange synthesis and superconductivity at 8.6 K of Na2Cr3As3 with quasi-one-dimensional crystal structure

A new Cr-based quasi-one-dimensional superconductor Na2Cr3As3 was synthesized by an ion-exchange method in sodium naphthalenide solution. The crystals are thread-like and the structure was analyzed by X-ray diffraction with a noncentrosymmetric hexagonal space group P-6m2 (No. 187), in which the (Cr3As3)2- linear chains are separated by Na+ ions, and the refined lattice parameters are a = 9.239(2) Å and c = 4.209(6) Å. The measurements for electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity reveal a superconducting transition with unconventional characteristic at the Tc of 8.6 K, which exceeds that of all previously reported Cr-based superconductors.

External Shock in a Multi-Bursting Gamma-ray Burst: Energy Injection Phase induced by the Later Launched Ejecta

Central engine of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) may be intermittent and launch several episodes of ejecta separated by a long quiescent interval. In this scenario, an external shock is formed due to the propagation of the first launched ejecta into the circum-burst medium and the later launched ejecta may interact with the external shock at later period. Owing to the internal dissipation, the later launched ejecta may be observed at a later time ($t_{\rm{jet}}$). In this paper, we study the relation of $t_{\rm{b}}$ and $t_{\rm{jet}}$, where $t_{\rm{b}}$ is the collision time of the later launched ejecta with the formed external shock. It is found that the relation of $t_{\rm{b}}$ and $t_{\rm{jet}}$ depends on the bulk Lorentz factor ($Γ_{\rm{jet}}$) of the later launched ejecta and the density ($ρ$) of the circum-burst medium. If the value of $Γ_{\rm{jet}}$ or $ρ$ is low, the $t_{\rm{b}}$ would be significantly larger than $t_{\rm{jet}}$. However, the $t_{\rm{b}}\sim t_{\rm{jet}}$ can be found if the value of $Γ_{\rm{jet}}$ or $ρ$ is significantly large. Our results can explain the large lag of the optical emission relative to the $γ$-ray/X-ray emission in GRBs, e.g., GRB~111209A. For GRBs with a precursor, our results suggest that the energy injection into the external shock and thus more than one external-reverse shock may appear in the main prompt emission phase. According to our model, we estimate the Lorentz factor of the second launched ejecta in GRB~160625B.

Black hole hyperaccretion inflow-outflow model. I. long and ultra-long gamma-ray bursts

Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) and ultra-LGRBs (ULGRBs) originate from collapsars, in the center of which a newborn rotating stellar-mass black hole (BH) surrounded by a massive accretion disk may form. In the scenario of BH hyperaccretion inflow-outflow model and Blandford-Znajek (BZ) mechanism to trigger gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), the real accretion rate to power a BZ jet is far lower than the mass supply rate from the progenitor star. The characteristics of the progenitor stars can be constrained by GRB luminosity observations, and the results exceed usual expectations. LGRBs lasting from several seconds to tens of seconds in the rest frame may originate from solar-metallicity ($Z \sim 1~ Z_\odot$, where $Z$ and $Z_\odot$ are the metallicities of progenitor stars and the Sun), massive ($M \gtrsim 34 ~M_\odot$, where $M$ and $M_\odot$ are the masses of progenitor stars and the Sun) stars or some zero-metallicity ($Z \sim 0$) stars. A fraction of low-metallicity ($Z \lesssim 10^{-2}~Z_\odot$) stars, including Population III stars, can produce ULGRBs such as GRB 111209A. The fraction of LGRBs lasting less than tens of seconds in the rest frame is more than 40$\%$, which cannot conform to the fraction of the demanded type of progenitor star. It possibly implies that the activity timescale of central engine may be much longer than the observed timescale of prompt emission phase, as indicated by X-ray late-time activities. Alternatively, LGRBs and ULGRBs may be powered by a millisecond magnetar central engine.

Superconductivity at 7.3 K in the 133-type Cr-based RbCr3As3 single crystals

Here we report the preparation and superconductivity of the 133-type Cr-based quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) RbCr3As3 single crystals. The samples were prepared by the deintercalation of Rb+ ions from the 233-type Rb2Cr3As3 crystals which were grown from a high-temperature solution growth method. The RbCr3As3 compound crystallizes in a centrosymmetric structure with the space group of P63/m (No. 176) different with its non-centrosymmetric Rb2Cr3As3 superconducting precursor, and the refined lattice parameters are a = 9.373(3) Å and c = 4.203(7) Å. Electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility characterizations reveal the occurrence of superconductivity with an interestingly higher onset Tc of 7.3 K than other Cr-based superconductors, and a high upper critical field Hc2(0) near 70 T in this 133-type RbCr3As3 crystals.

Revisiting the electron-doped SmFeAsO: enhanced superconductivity up to 58.6 K by Th and F codoping

In the iron-based high-Tc bulk superconductors, Tc above 50K was only observed in the electron-doped 1111-type compounds. Here we revisit the electron-doped SmFeAsO polycrystals to make a further investigation for the highest T-c in these materials. To introduce more electron carriers and less crystal lattice distortions, we study the Th and F codoping effects into the Sm-O layers with heavy electron doping. Dozens of Sm1-x Th-x FeAsO1-y F-y samples are synthesized through the solid state reaction method, and these samples are carefully characterized by the structural, resistive, and magnetic measurements. We find that the codoping of Th and F clearly enhances the superconducting T-c more than the Th or F single-doped samples, with the highest record T-c up to 58.6K when x= 0.2 and y= 0.225. Further element doping causes more impurities and lattice distortions in the samples with a weakened superconductivity.

Superconductivity at 3.1 K in the orthorhombic ternary silicide ScRuSi

We report the synthesis, crystal structure, superconductivity and physical property characterizations of the ternary equiatomic compound ScRuSi. Polycrystalline samples of ScRuSi were prepared by an arc-melting method. The as-prepared samples were identified as the orthorhombic Co2P-type o-ScRuSi by the powder X-ray diffraction analysis. Electrical resistivity measurement shows o-ScRuSi to be a metal which superconducts below a Tc of 3.1 K, and the upper critical field μ0Hc2(0) is estimated to be 0.87 T. The magnetization and specific heat measurements confirm the bulk type-II superconductivity in o-ScRuSi, with the specific heat jump within the BCS weak coupling limit. o-ScRuSi is the first Co2P-type superconductor containing scandium. After annealing at 1273 K for a week, o-ScRuSi transforms into the hexagonal Fe2P-type h-ScRuSi, and the latter is a Pauli-paramagnetic metal with no superconductivity observed above 1.8 K.

Searching for the doubly-charged Higgs bosons in the Georgi-Machacek model at the electron-proton colliders

The Georgi-Machacek model is one of many beyond Standard Model scenarios with an extended scalar sector which can group under the custodial $\rm SU(2)_C$ symmetry. There are 5-plet, 3-plet and singlet Higgs bosons under the classification of such symmetry in addition to the Standard Model Higgs boson. In this paper, we study the prospects for detecting the doubly-charged Higgs boson ($\rm H_5^{\pm\pm}$) through the vector boson fusion production at the electron-proton (ep) colliders. We concentrate on our analysis through $μ$-lepton pair production via pair of same-sign W bosons decay. The $\rm H_5^{\pm\pm}$ discovery potentials at the ep colliders are presented.

Comparison of gravitational waves from central engines of gamma-ray bursts: neutrino-dominated accretion flows, Blandford-Znajek mechanisms, and millisecond magnetars

Neutrino-dominated accretion flow (NDAF) around a rotating stellar-mass black hole (BH) is one of the plausible candidates for the central engines of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Because the time-variant and anisotropic emission of neutrinos from NDAFs leads to GRB variability, NDAFs can be regarded as the sources of the strong gravitational waves (GWs). We calculate the dependences of the GW strains on both the BH spin and the accretion rate. We demonstrate that for typical GRBs with either single pulse or multiple pulses, the GWs from NDAFs might be detected at a distance of $\sim 100$ kpc/$\sim 1$ Mpc by advanced LIGO/Einstein Telescope with a typical frequency of $\sim 10-100$ Hz. Besides NDAFs, the other two competitive candidates for GRB central engine are Blandford-Znajek (BZ) mechanism and millisecond magnetars. We explore the GW signals from these two as well, and compare the corresponding results with NDAFs'. We find that for a certain GRB, the possible detected distance from NDAFs is about two orders of magnitude higher than that from BZ mechanism, but at least two orders of magnitude lower than that from magnetars. The typical GW frequency for BZ mechanism is the same with that of NDAFs, $\sim 10-100$ Hz, while the typical frequency for magnetars is $\sim 2000$ Hz. Therefore, the GWs released by the central engines of adjacent GRBs might be used to determine whether there is an NDAF, a BZ jet or a magnetar in GRB center.

Localization and mobility edges in the off-diagonal quasiperiodic model with slowly varying potentials

We study a one-dimensional system that includes both a commensurate off-diagonal modulation of the hopping amplitude and an incommensurate, slowly varying diagonal on-site modulation. By using asymptotic heuristic arguments, we identify four closed form expressions for the mobility edges. We further study numerically the inverse participation ratio, the density of states and the Lyapunov exponent. The numerical results are in exact agreement with our theoretical predictions. Besides a metal-insulator transition driven by the strength of the slowly varying potential, another four insulator-metal transitions are found in this model as the energy is increased in magnitude from the band center ($E =0$) to the mobility edges ($\pm E_{c2}, \pm E_{c1}$).

Potentially $\text{GL}_2$-type Galois representations associated to noncongruence modular forms

In this paper, we consider Galois representations of the absolute Galois group $\text{Gal}(\overline {\mathbb Q}/\mathbb Q)$ attached to modular forms for noncongruence subgroups of $\text{SL}_2(\mathbb Z)$. When the underlying modular curves have a model over $\mathbb Q$, these representations are constructed by Scholl and are referred to as Scholl representations, which form a large class of motivic Galois representations. In particular, by a result of Belyi, Scholl representations include the Galois actions on the Jacobian varieties of algebraic curves defined over $\mathbb Q$. As Scholl representations are motivic, they are expected to correspond to automorphic representations according to the Langlands philosophy. Using recent developments in the automorphy lifting theorem, we obtain various automphy and potential automorphy results for potentially $\text{GL}_2$-type Galois representations associated to noncongruence modular forms. Our results are applied to various kinds of examples. Especially, we obtain potential automorphy results for Galois representations attached to an infinite family of spaces of weight 3 noncongruence cusp forms of arbitrarily large dimensions.
