Excitation of exciton-polariton vortices in pillar microcavities by a Gaussian beam

With coupled Gross-Piteavskii equations we study excitation of exciton-polariton vortices and antivortices in a pillar microcavity by a Gaussian pump beam. The structure of vortices and antivortices shows a strong dependence on the microcavity radius, pump geometry, and nonlinear exciton-exciton interaction. Due to the nonlinear interaction the strong Gaussian beam cannot excite more polariton vortices or antivortices with respect to the weak one. The calculation demonstrates that the weak Gaussian beam can excite vortex-antivortex pairs, vortices with high angular momentum, and superposition states of vortex and antivortex with high opposite angular momentum. The pump geometry for the Gaussian beam to excite these vortex structures are analyzed in detail, which holds a potential application for Sagnac interferometry and generating the optical beams with high angular momentum.

Fate of topological states and mobility edges in one-dimensional slowly varying incommensurate potentials

We investigate the interplay between disorder and superconducting pairing for a one-dimensional $p$-wave superconductor subject to slowly varying incommensurate potentials with mobility edges. With amplitude increments of the incommensurate potentials, the system can undergo a transition from a topological phase to a topologically trivial localized phase. Interestingly, we find that there are four mobility edges in the spectrum when the strength of the incommensurate potential is below a critical threshold, and a novel topologically nontrivial localized phase emerges in a certain region. We reveal this energy-dependent metal-insulator transition by applying several numerical diagnostic techniques, including the inverse participation ratio, the density of states and the Lyapunov exponent. Nowadays, precise control of the background potential and the $p$-wave superfluid can be realized in the ultracold atomic systems, we believe that these novel mobility edges can be observed experimentally.

Superconductivity at 5 K in quasi-one-dimensional Cr-based KCr3As3 single crystals

Recently a new family of Cr-based A2Cr3As3 (A = K, Rb, Cs) superconductors were reported, which own a rare quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) crystal structure with infinite (Cr3As3)2- chains and exhibit intriguing superconducting characteristics possibly derived from spin-triplet electron pairing. The crystal structure of A2Cr3As3 is actually a slight variation of the hexagonal TlFe3Te3 prototype although they have different lattice symmetry. Here we report superconductivity in a 133-type KCr3As3 compound that belongs to the latter structure. The single crystals of KCr3As3 were prepared by the deintercalation of K ions from K2Cr3As3 crystals which were grown from a high-temperature solution growth method, and it owns a centrosymmetric lattice in contrast to the non-centrosymmetric K2Cr3As3. After annealing at a moderate temperature, the KCr3As3 crystals show bulk superconductivity at 5 K revealed by electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements. The discovery of this KCr3As3 superconductor provides a different structural instance to study the exotic superconductivity in these Q1D Cr-based superconductors.

Neutrino-dominated accretion flows as the central engine of gamma-ray bursts

Neutrino-dominated accretion flows (NDAFs) around rotating stellar-mass black holes (BHs) are plausible candidates for the central engines of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). NDAFs are hyperaccretion disks with accretion rates in the range of around 0.001-10 $M_\odot ~\rm s^{-1}$, which have high density and temperature and therefore are extremely optically thick and geometrically slim or even thick. We review the theoretical progresses in studying the properties of NDAFs as well as their applications to the GRB phenomenology. The topics include: the steady radial and vertical structure of NDAFs and the implications for calculating neutrino luminosity and annihilation luminosity, jet power due to neutrino-antineutrino annihilation and Blandford-Znajek mechanism and their dependences on parameters such as BH mass, spin, and accretion rate, time evolution of NDAFs, effect of magnetic fields, applications of NDAF theories to the GRB phenomenology such as lightcurve variability, extended emission, X-ray flares, kilonovae, etc., as well as probing NDAFs using multi-messenger signals such as MeV neutrinos and gravitational waves.

Phase diagram of a generalized off-diagonal Aubry-André model with p-wave pairing

Off-diagonal Aubry-André (AA) model has recently attracted a great deal of attention as they provide condensed matter realization of topological phases. We numerically study a generalized off-diagonal AA model with p-wave superfluid pairing in the presence of both commensurate and incommensurate hopping modulations. The phase diagram as functions of the modulation strength of incommensurate hopping and the strength of the p-wave pairing is obtained by using the multifractal analysis. We show that with the appearance of the p-wave pairing, the system exhibits mobility-edge phases and critical phases with various number of topologically protected zero-energy modes. Predicted topological nature of these exotic phases can be realized in a cold atomic system of incommensurate bichromatic optical lattice with induced p-wave superfluid pairing by using a Raman laser in proximity to a molecular Bose-Einstein condensation.

Beam distribution reconstruction simulation for electron beam probe

Electron beam probe (EBP) is a new principle detector, which makes use of a low-intensity and low-energy electron beam to measure the transverse profile, bunch shape, beam neutralization and beam wake field of an intense beam with small dimensions. While can be applied to many aspects, we limit our analysis to beam distribution reconstruction. This kind of detector is almost non-interceptive for all of the beam and does not disturb the machine environment. In this paper, we present the theoretical aspects behind this technique for beam distribution measurement and some simulation results of the detector involved. First, a method to obtain parallel electron beam is introduced and a simulation code is developed. And then, EBP as a profile monitor for dense beam is simulated using fast scan method under various target beam profile, such as KV distribution, waterbag distribution, parabolic distribution, Gaussian distribution and halo distribution. Profile reconstruction from the deflected electron beam trajectory is implemented and compared with the actual one, and an expected agreement is achieved. Furthermore, Instead of fast scan, a slow scan, i.e. step-by-step scan, is considered, which lows the requirement for hardware, i.e. Radio Frequency deflector. we calculate the three dimensional electric field of Gaussian distribution and simulate the electron motion under this field. In addition, fast scan along the target beam direction and slow scan across the beam is also presented, and can provide a measurement of longitudinal distribution as well as transverse profile simultaneously. Final, simulation results for China Accelerator Driven Sub-critical System (CADS) and High Intensity Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF) are given to investigate the quantitative behavior of EBP.

Steep Decay Phase Shaped by the Curvature Effect. II. Spectral Evolution

We derive a simple analytical formula to describe the evolution of spectral index $β$ in the steep decay phase shaped by the curvature effect with assumption that the spectral parameters and Lorentz factor of jet shell is the same for different latitude. Here, the value of $β$ is estimated in 0.3$-$10keV energy band. For a spherical thin shell with a cutoff power law (CPL) intrinsic radiation spectrum, the spectral evolution can be read as a linear function of observer time. For the situation with Band function intrinsic radiation spectrum, the spectral evolution may be complex. If the observed break energy of radiation spectrum is larger than 10keV, the spectral evolution is the same as that shaped by jet shells with a CPL spectrum. If the observed break energy is less than 0.3keV, the value of $β$ would be a constant. Others, the spectral evolution can be approximated as a logarithmal function of the observer time in generally.

Steep Decay Phase Shaped by the Curvature Effect. I. Flux Evolution

The curvature effect may be responsible for the steep decay phase observed in gamma-ray bursts. For testing the curvature effect with observations, the zero time point $t_0$ adopted to plot observer time and flux on a logarithmic scale should be appropriately selected. In practice, however, the true $t_0$ cannot be directly constrained from the data. Then, we move $t_0$ to a certain time in the steep decay phase, which can be easily identified. In this situation, we derive an analytical formula to describe the flux evolution of the steep decay phase. The analytical formula is read as $F_ν\propto (1+\tilde t_{\rm obs}/{\tilde t_c})^{-α}$ with $α(\tilde{t}_{\rm obs})=2+{\int_{0}^{\log (1+\tilde{t}_{\rm obs}/{\tilde{t}_c})} {β(τ)d[\log(1+τ/{\tilde{t}_c})]}}/{\log (1 + {\tilde t}_{\rm obs}/{{\tilde t}_c})}$, where $F_ν$ is the flux observed at frequency $ν$, $\tilde t_{\rm obs}$ is the observer time by setting zero time point $t_0$ at a certain time in the steep decay phase, $β$ is the spectral index estimated around $ν$, and ${\tilde t}_c$ is the decay timescale of the phase with $\tilde{t}_{\rm obs}{\geqslant}0$. We test the analytical formula with the data from numerical calculations. It is found that the analytical formula presents a well estimation about the evolution of flux shaped by the curvature effect. Our analytical formula can be used to confront the curvature effect with observations and estimate the decay timescale of the steep decay phase.

Potentially crystalline lifts of certain prescribed types

We prove several results concerning the existence of potentially crystalline lifts with prescribed Hodge-Tate weights and inertial types of a given n-dimensional mod p representation of the absolute Galois group of K, where K/Q_p is a finite extension. Some of these results are proved by purely local methods, and are expected to be useful in the application of automorphy lifting theorems. The proofs of the other results are global, making use of automorphy lifting theorems.

Learning from various labeling strategies for suicide-related messages on social media: An experimental study

Suicide is an important but often misunderstood problem, one that researchers are now seeking to better understand through social media. Due in large part to the fuzzy nature of what constitutes suicidal risks, most supervised approaches for learning to automatically detect suicide-related activity in social media require a great deal of human labor to train. However, humans themselves have diverse or conflicting views on what constitutes suicidal thoughts. So how to obtain reliable gold standard labels is fundamentally challenging and, we hypothesize, depends largely on what is asked of the annotators and what slice of the data they label. We conducted multiple rounds of data labeling and collected annotations from crowdsourcing workers and domain experts. We aggregated the resulting labels in various ways to train a series of supervised models. Our preliminary evaluations show that using unanimously agreed labels from multiple annotators is helpful to achieve robust machine models.

Vertical Advection Effects on Hyper-accretion Disks and Potential Link between Gamma-ray Bursts and Kilonovae

Recent simulations on super-Eddington accretion flows have shown that, apart from the diffusion process, the vertical advection based on magnetic buoyancy can be a more efficient process to release the trapped photons in the optically thick disk. As a consequence, the radiative luminosity from the accretion disk can be far beyond the Eddington value. Following this spirit, we revisit the structure and radiation of hyper-accretion disks with mass accretion rates in the range $10^{-3}\sim 10~M_{\sun}~{\rm s}^{-1}$. Our results show that, due to the strong cooling through the vertical advection, the disk temperature becomes lower than that in the classic model without the vertical advection process, and therefore the neutrino luminosity from the disk is lower. On the other hand, the gamma-ray photons released through the vertical advection can be extremely super-Eddington. We argue that the large amount of escaped gamma-ray photons may have more significant contribution to the primordial fireball than the neutrino annihilation, and may hint a link between gamma-ray bursts and kilonovae in the black hole hyper-accretion scenario.

Massive Neutral Gas Outflow in Reddened Quasar SDSS J072910.34+333634.3

SDSS J072910.34+333634.3 is a reddened quasar at z=0.96. The archivel Keck/ESI spectrum and our new P200/TripleSpec spectrum reveal an absorption line system in He I*, Ca II H\&K and Na ID. The absorption line system has a width of $\sim$600 km/s and a blueshift velocity of $\sim$800 km/s relative to the core of narrow emission lines, indicating an outflow. Using the Ca II doublet, we determined that the outflowing gas covers $\sim$70\% of the continuum. On the other hand, the HST/ACS image which taken in rest-frame 4130 Å show that the fraction of the quasar emission in ESI aperture was $<$40\%. We thus conclude that the absorbing gas covers a significant fraction of extended starlight emission, and the best-estimated fraction of $\sim$50\% yields a lower limit of the crosssectional area of the outflowing gas to be $>$8 kpc$^2$. The strong Na\&Ca absorption suggests that the absorbing gas is thick and mostly neutral, which is also supported by dust extinction $A_V\sim3$. Using the best-estimated hydrogen column density $N_H\sim3\times10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$, the total mass of the outflowing gas is $>3\times10^9 M_\odot$. The outflow is likely to be driven by AGN because of the $\sim$800 km/s blueshift velocity, suggesting SDSS J072910.34+333634.3 is undergoing one of the most violent AGN feedback we have seen. In the future, one can find more such massive neutral gas outflows in other reddened quasars using similar method, and this can shed new light on the study of AGN feedback.

Circuit QED: Cross-Kerr-effect induced by a superconducting qutrit without classical pulses

The realization of cross-Kerr nonlinearity is an important task for many applications in quantum information processing. In this work, we propose a method for realizing cross-Kerr nonlinearity interaction between two superconducting coplanar waveguide resonators coupled by a three-level superconducting flux qutrit (coupler). By employing the qutrit-resonator dispersive interaction, we derive an effective Hamiltonian involving two-photon number operators and a coupler operator. This Hamiltonian can be used to describe a cross-Kerr nonlinearity interaction between two resonators when the coupler is in the ground state. Because the coupler is unexcited during the entire process, the effect of coupler decoherence can be greatly minimized. More importantly, compared with the previous proposals, our proposal does not require classical pulses. Furthermore, due to use of only a three-level qutrit, the experimental setup is much simplified when compared with previous proposals requiring a four-level artificial atomic systems. Based on our Hamiltonian, we implement a two-resonator qubits controlled-phase gate and generate a two-resonator entangled coherent state. Numerical simulation shows that the high-fidelity implementation of the phase gate and creation of the entangled coherent state are feasible with current circuit QED technology.

Discovery of a novel 112-type iron-pnictide and La-doping induced superconductivity in Eu1-xLaxFeAs2 (x = 0 ~ 0.15)

We report the discovery and characterization of a novel 112-type iron pnictide EuFeAs2, with La-doping induced superconductivity in a series of Eu1-xLaxFeAs2. The polycrystalline samples were synthesized through solid state reaction method only within a very narrow temperature window around 1073 K. Small single crystals were also grown from a flux method with the size about 100 um. The crystal structure was identified by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis as a monoclinic structure with space group of P21/m. From resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements, we found that the parent compound EuFeAs2 shows a Fe2+ related antiferromagnetic/structural phase transition near 110 K and a Eu2+ related antiferromagnetic phase transition near 40 K. La doping suppressed the both phase transitions and induced superconducting transition with a Tc ~ 11 K for Eu0.85La0.15FeAs2.

Longitudinal RF capture simulation and BPM signal estimation

In this paper, the theoretical aspects behind longitudinal RF capture are reviewed and the capture process is simulated via a program based on this theory. Four kinds of cases with different initial distribution and capture curve are considered, i.e. uniform distribution with adiabatic capture, uniform distribution with non-adiabatic capture, Gaussian distribution with adiabatic capture and Gaussian distribution with non-adiabatic capture. The simulation results are compared each other and discussed, and Gaussian distribution with adiabatic capture is demonstrated having a higher capture efficiency and leading to a shorter bunch length. In addition, the BPM induced signal is simulated with high input impendence, i.e. $1MΩ$, and low input impendence, i.e. $50Ω$, respectively. Finally, the BPM signal of Heavy Ion Medical Machine (HIMM) is estimated and compared with measured one, and a good agreement is achieved.

Transferring arbitrary d-dimensional quantum states of a superconducting qudit in circuit QED

A qudit ($d$-level quantum systems) has a large Hilbert space and thus can be used to achieve many quantum information and communication tasks. Here, we propose a method to transfer arbitrary $d$-dimensional quantum states (known or unknown) between two superconducting qudits coupled to a single cavity. The state transfer can be performed fast because of employing resonant interactions only. In addition, quantum states can be deterministically transferred without measurement. Numerical simulations show that high-fidelity transfer of quantum states between two superconducting transmon qudits ($d\leq5$) is feasible with current circuit QED technology. This proposal is quite general and can be applied to accomplish the same task with various superconducting qudits, quantum dots, or natural atoms coupled to a cavity or resonator.

Internal X-ray plateau in short GRBs: Signature of supramassive fast-rotating quark stars?

A supramassive, strongly-magnetized millisecond neutron star (NS) has been proposed to be the candidate central engine of at least some short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs), based on the "internal plateau" commonly observed in the early X-ray afterglow. While a previous analysis shows a qualitative consistency between this suggestion and the Swift SGRB data, the distribution of observed break time $t_b$ is much narrower than the distribution of the collapse time of supramassive NSs for the several NS equations-of-state (EoSs) investigated. In this paper, we study four recently-constructed "unified" NS EoSs, as well as three developed strange quark star (QS) EoSs within the new confinement density-dependent mass model. All the EoSs chosen here satisfy the recent observational constraints of the two massive pulsars whose masses are precisely measured. We construct sequences of rigidly rotating NS/QS configurations with increasing spinning frequency $f$, from non-rotating ($f = 0$) to the Keplerian frequency ($f = f_{\rm K}$), and provide convenient analytical parametrizations of the results. Assuming that the cosmological NS-NS merger systems have the same mass distribution as the Galactic NS-NS systems, we demonstrate that all except the BCPM NS EoS can reproduce the current $22\%$ supramassive NS/QS fraction constraint as derived from the SGRB data. We simultaneously simulate the observed quantities (the break time $t_b$, the break time luminosity $L_b$ and the total energy in the electromagnetic channel $E_{\rm total}$) of SGRBs, and find that while equally well reproducing other observational constraints, QS EoSs predict a much narrower $t_b$ distribution than that of the NS EoSs, better matching the data. We therefore suggest that the post-merger product of NS-NS mergers might be fast-rotating supramassive QSs rather than NSs.

Efficient transfer of an arbitrary qutrit state in circuit QED

Compared with a qubit, a qutrit (i.e., three-level quantum system) has a larger Hilbert space and thus can be used to encode more information in quantum information processing and communication. Here, we propose a scheme to transfer an arbitrary quantum state between two flux qutrits coupled to two resonators. This scheme is simple because it only requires two basic operations. The state-transfer operation can be performed fast because of using resonant interactions only. Numerical simulations show that high-fidelity transfer of quantum states between the two qutrits is feasible with current circuit-QED technology. This scheme is quite general and can be applied to accomplish the same task for other solid-state qutrits coupled to resonators.
