The third- and fourth-order orbital angular momentum multiplexed amplification with ultra-low differential mode gain

In this Letter, a ring-core erbium-doped fiber (RC-EDF), with two-layer erbium-doped structure, supporting up to the fourth-order orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode is designed and fabricated for OAM mode multiplexed amplification. Using the RC-EDF, the third- and fourth-order OAM modes amplification with ultra-low differential mode gain (DMG) is demonstrated by observing both the modal intensity and phase distribution and measuring the modal gain under the fundamental mode core-pumping. The measured average gain of four modes (l=+3, -3, +4, -4) multiplexed amplification is higher than 19dB cover the C-band and the DMG is less than 1dB. Additionally, the gain of two conjugate OAM modes are almost the same under different pump power no matter they are amplified simultaneously or separately.

Multi defect detection and analysis of electron microscopy images with deep learning

Electron microscopy is widely used to explore defects in crystal structures, but human detecting of defects is often time-consuming, error-prone, and unreliable, and is not scalable to large numbers of images or real-time analysis. In this work, we discuss the application of machine learning approaches to find the location and geometry of different defect clusters in irradiated steels. We show that a deep learning based Faster R-CNN analysis system has a performance comparable to human analysis with relatively small training data sets. This study proves the promising ability to apply deep learning to assist the development of automated microscopy data analysis even when multiple features are present and paves the way for fast, scalable, and reliable analysis systems for massive amounts of modern electron microscopy data.

Semantic Concentration for Domain Adaptation

Domain adaptation (DA) paves the way for label annotation and dataset bias issues by the knowledge transfer from a label-rich source domain to a related but unlabeled target domain. A mainstream of DA methods is to align the feature distributions of the two domains. However, the majority of them focus on the entire image features where irrelevant semantic information, e.g., the messy background, is inevitably embedded. Enforcing feature alignments in such case will negatively influence the correct matching of objects and consequently lead to the semantically negative transfer due to the confusion of irrelevant semantics. To tackle this issue, we propose Semantic Concentration for Domain Adaptation (SCDA), which encourages the model to concentrate on the most principal features via the pair-wise adversarial alignment of prediction distributions. Specifically, we train the classifier to class-wisely maximize the prediction distribution divergence of each sample pair, which enables the model to find the region with large differences among the same class of samples. Meanwhile, the feature extractor attempts to minimize that discrepancy, which suppresses the features of dissimilar regions among the same class of samples and accentuates the features of principal parts. As a general method, SCDA can be easily integrated into various DA methods as a regularizer to further boost their performance. Extensive experiments on the cross-domain benchmarks show the efficacy of SCDA.

ASFM-Net: Asymmetrical Siamese Feature Matching Network for Point Completion

We tackle the problem of object completion from point clouds and propose a novel point cloud completion network employing an Asymmetrical Siamese Feature Matching strategy, termed as ASFM-Net. Specifically, the Siamese auto-encoder neural network is adopted to map the partial and complete input point cloud into a shared latent space, which can capture detailed shape prior. Then we design an iterative refinement unit to generate complete shapes with fine-grained details by integrating prior information. Experiments are conducted on the PCN dataset and the Completion3D benchmark, demonstrating the state-of-the-art performance of the proposed ASFM-Net. Our method achieves the 1st place in the leaderboard of Completion3D and outperforms existing methods with a large margin, about 12%. The codes and trained models are released publicly at https://github.com/Yan-Xia/ASFM-Net.

Infinitely many embedded eigenvalues for the Neumann-Poincaré operator in 3D

This article constructs a surface whose Neumann-Poincaré (NP) integral operator has infinitely many eigenvalues embedded in its essential spectrum. The surface is a sphere perturbed by smoothly attaching a conical singularity, which imparts essential spectrum. Rotational symmetry allows a decomposition of the operator into Fourier components. Eigenvalues of infinitely many Fourier components are constructed so that they lie within the essential spectrum of other Fourier components and thus within the essential spectrum of the full NP operator. The proof requires the perturbation to be sufficiently small, with controlled curvature, and the conical singularity to be sufficiently flat.

A Data-driven Explainable Case-based Reasoning Approach for Financial Risk Detection

The rapid development of artificial intelligence methods contributes to their wide applications for forecasting various financial risks in recent years. This study introduces a novel explainable case-based reasoning (CBR) approach without a requirement of rich expertise in financial risk. Compared with other black-box algorithms, the explainable CBR system allows a natural economic interpretation of results. Indeed, the empirical results emphasize the interpretability of the CBR system in predicting financial risk, which is essential for both financial companies and their customers. In addition, our results show that the proposed automatic design CBR system has a good prediction performance compared to other artificial intelligence methods, overcoming the main drawback of a standard CBR system of highly depending on prior domain knowledge about the corresponding field.

Day-ahead electricity price prediction applying hybrid models of LSTM-based deep learning methods and feature selection algorithms under consideration of market coupling

The availability of accurate day-ahead electricity price forecasts is pivotal for electricity market participants. In the context of trade liberalisation and market harmonisation in the European markets, accurate price forecasting becomes difficult for electricity market participants to obtain because electricity forecasting requires the consideration of features from ever-growing coupling markets. This study provides a method of exploring the influence of market coupling on electricity price prediction. We apply state-of-the-art long short-term memory (LSTM) deep neural networks combined with feature selection algorithms for electricity price prediction under the consideration of market coupling. LSTM models have a good performance in handling nonlinear and complex problems and processing time series data. In our empirical study of the Nordic market, the proposed models obtain considerably accurate results. The results show that feature selection is essential to achieving accurate prediction, and features from integrated markets have an impact on prediction. The feature importance analysis implies that the German market has a salient role in the price generation of Nord Pool.

Residual Attention Based Network for Automatic Classification of Phonation Modes

Phonation mode is an essential characteristic of singing style as well as an important expression of performance. It can be classified into four categories, called neutral, breathy, pressed and flow. Previous studies used voice quality features and feature engineering for classification. While deep learning has achieved significant progress in other fields of music information retrieval (MIR), there are few attempts in the classification of phonation modes. In this study, a Residual Attention based network is proposed for automatic classification of phonation modes. The network consists of a convolutional network performing feature processing and a soft mask branch enabling the network focus on a specific area. In comparison experiments, the models with proposed network achieve better results in three of the four datasets than previous works, among which the highest classification accuracy is 94.58%, 2.29% higher than the baseline.

Significant Inverse Magnetocaloric Effect induced by Quantum Criticality

The criticality-enhanced magnetocaloric effect (MCE) near a field-induced quantum critical point (QCP) in the spin systems constitutes a very promising and highly tunable alternative to conventional adiabatic demagnetization refrigeration. Strong fluctuations in the low-$T$ quantum critical regime can give rise to a large thermal entropy change and thus significant cooling effect when approaching the QCP. In this work, through efficient and accurate many-body calculations, we show there exists a significant inverse MCE(iMCE) in the spin-1 quantum chain materials(CH$_3$)$_4$NNi(NO$_2$)$_3$ (TMNIN) and NiCl$_2$-4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$ (DTN), where DTN has substantial low-$T$ refrigeration capacity while requiring only moderate magnetic fields. The iMCE characteristics, including the adiabatic temperature change $ΔT_{\rm ad}$, isothermal entropy change $ΔS$, differential Grüneisen parameter, and the entropy change rate, are obtained with quantum many-body calculations at finite temperature. The cooling performance, i.e., the efficiency factor and hold time, of the two compounds is also discussed. Based on the many-body calculations on realistic models for the spin-chain materials, we conclude that the compound DTN constitutes a very promising and highly efficient quantum magnetic coolant with pronounced iMCE properties. We advocate that such quantum magnets can be used in cryofree refrigeration for space applications and quantum computing environments.

Multi-view Depth Estimation using Epipolar Spatio-Temporal Networks

We present a novel method for multi-view depth estimation from a single video, which is a critical task in various applications, such as perception, reconstruction and robot navigation. Although previous learning-based methods have demonstrated compelling results, most works estimate depth maps of individual video frames independently, without taking into consideration the strong geometric and temporal coherence among the frames. Moreover, current state-of-the-art (SOTA) models mostly adopt a fully 3D convolution network for cost regularization and therefore require high computational cost, thus limiting their deployment in real-world applications. Our method achieves temporally coherent depth estimation results by using a novel Epipolar Spatio-Temporal (EST) transformer to explicitly associate geometric and temporal correlation with multiple estimated depth maps. Furthermore, to reduce the computational cost, inspired by recent Mixture-of-Experts models, we design a compact hybrid network consisting of a 2D context-aware network and a 3D matching network which learn 2D context information and 3D disparity cues separately. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method achieves higher accuracy in depth estimation and significant speedup than the SOTA methods.

Adaptive Surface Normal Constraint for Depth Estimation

We present a novel method for single image depth estimation using surface normal constraints. Existing depth estimation methods either suffer from the lack of geometric constraints, or are limited to the difficulty of reliably capturing geometric context, which leads to a bottleneck of depth estimation quality. We therefore introduce a simple yet effective method, named Adaptive Surface Normal (ASN) constraint, to effectively correlate the depth estimation with geometric consistency. Our key idea is to adaptively determine the reliable local geometry from a set of randomly sampled candidates to derive surface normal constraint, for which we measure the consistency of the geometric contextual features. As a result, our method can faithfully reconstruct the 3D geometry and is robust to local shape variations, such as boundaries, sharp corners and noises. We conduct extensive evaluations and comparisons using public datasets. The experimental results demonstrate our method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods and has superior efficiency and robustness.

Video 3D Sampling for Self-supervised Representation Learning

Most of the existing video self-supervised methods mainly leverage temporal signals of videos, ignoring that the semantics of moving objects and environmental information are all critical for video-related tasks. In this paper, we propose a novel self-supervised method for video representation learning, referred to as Video 3D Sampling (V3S). In order to sufficiently utilize the information (spatial and temporal) provided in videos, we pre-process a video from three dimensions (width, height, time). As a result, we can leverage the spatial information (the size of objects), temporal information (the direction and magnitude of motions) as our learning target. In our implementation, we combine the sampling of the three dimensions and propose the scale and projection transformations in space and time respectively. The experimental results show that, when applied to action recognition, video retrieval and action similarity labeling, our approach improves the state-of-the-arts with significant margins.

Multi-peak solitons in nonlocal nonlinear system with sine-oscillation response

The multi-peak solitons and their stability are investigated for the nonlocal nonlinear system with the sine-oscillation response, including both the cases of positive and negative Kerr coefficients. The Hermite-Gaussian-type multi-peak solitons and the ranges of the degree of nonlocality within which the solitons exist are analytically obtained by the variational approach. This is the first time, to our knowledge at least, to discuss the solution existence range of the multi-peak solitons analytically, although approximately. The variational analytical results are confirmed by the numerical ones. The stability of the multi-peak solitons are addressed by the linear stability analysis. It is found that the upper thresholds of the peak-number of the stable solitons are five and four for the system with negative and positive Kerr coefficients, respectively.

Semi-TCL: Semi-Supervised Track Contrastive Representation Learning

Online tracking of multiple objects in videos requires strong capacity of modeling and matching object appearances. Previous methods for learning appearance embedding mostly rely on instance-level matching without considering the temporal continuity provided by videos. We design a new instance-to-track matching objective to learn appearance embedding that compares a candidate detection to the embedding of the tracks persisted in the tracker. It enables us to learn not only from videos labeled with complete tracks, but also unlabeled or partially labeled videos. We implement this learning objective in a unified form following the spirit of constrastive loss. Experiments on multiple object tracking datasets demonstrate that our method can effectively learning discriminative appearance embeddings in a semi-supervised fashion and outperform state of the art methods on representative benchmarks.

BiERU: Bidirectional Emotional Recurrent Unit for Conversational Sentiment Analysis

Sentiment analysis in conversations has gained increasing attention in recent years for the growing amount of applications it can serve, e.g., sentiment analysis, recommender systems, and human-robot interaction. The main difference between conversational sentiment analysis and single sentence sentiment analysis is the existence of context information which may influence the sentiment of an utterance in a dialogue. How to effectively encode contextual information in dialogues, however, remains a challenge. Existing approaches employ complicated deep learning structures to distinguish different parties in a conversation and then model the context information. In this paper, we propose a fast, compact and parameter-efficient party-ignorant framework named bidirectional emotional recurrent unit for conversational sentiment analysis. In our system, a generalized neural tensor block followed by a two-channel classifier is designed to perform context compositionality and sentiment classification, respectively. Extensive experiments on three standard datasets demonstrate that our model outperforms the state of the art in most cases.

Quantum compressed sensing of ultra-wideband radio-frequency signal

Real-time sensing of ultra-wideband radio-frequency signal with high frequency resolution is challenging, which is confined by the sampling rate of electronic analog-to-digital converter and the capability of digital signal processing. By combining quantum mechanics with compressed sensing, quantum compressed sensing is proposed for wideband radio-frequency signal frequency measurement. By using an electro-optical crystal as a sensor which modulates the wave function of the coherent photons with the signal to be measured. The frequency spectrum could be recovered by detecting the modulated sparse photons with a low time-jitter single-photon detector and a time-to-digital converter. More than 50 GHz real-time analysis bandwidth is demonstrated with the Fourier transform limit resolution. The further simulation shows it can be extended to more than 300 GHz with the present technologies.

Toward Less Hidden Cost of Code Completion with Acceptance and Ranking Models

Code completion is widely used by software developers to provide coding suggestions given a partially written code snippet. Apart from the traditional code completion methods, which only support single token completion at minimal positions, recent studies show the ability to provide longer code completion at more flexible positions. However, such frequently triggered and longer completion results reduce the overall precision as they generate more invalid results. Moreover, different studies are mostly incompatible with each other. Thus, it is vital to develop an ensemble framework that can combine results from multiple models to draw merits and offset defects of each model. This paper conducts a coding simulation to collect data from code context and different code completion models and then apply the data in two tasks. First, we introduce an acceptance model which can dynamically control whether to display completion results to the developer. It uses simulation features to predict whether correct results exist in the output of these models. Our best model reduces the percentage of false-positive completion from 55.09% to 17.44%. Second, we design a fusion ranking scheme that can automatically identify the priority of the completion results and reorder the candidates from multiple code completion models. This scheme is flexible in dealing with various models, regardless of the type or the length of their completion results. We integrate this ranking scheme with two frequency models and a GPT-2 styled language model, along with the acceptance model to yield 27.80% and 37.64% increase in TOP1 and TOP5 accuracy, respectively. In addition, we propose a new code completion evaluation metric, Benefit-Cost Ratio(BCR), taking into account the benefit of keystrokes saving and hidden cost of completion list browsing, which is closer to real coder experience scenario.

Dipole blockade without dipole-dipole interaction

The dipole blockade phenomenon is a direct consequence of strong dipole-dipole interaction, where only single atom can be excited because the doubly excited state is shifted out of resonance. The corresponding two-body entanglement with non-zero concurrence induced by the dipole blockade effect is an important resource for quantum information processing. Here, we propose a novel physical mechanism for realizing dipole blockade without the dipole-dipole interaction, where two qubits coupled to a cavity, are driven by a coherent field. By suitably chosen placements of the qubits in the cavity and by adjusting the relative decay strengths of the qubits and cavity field, we kill many unwanted excitation pathways. This leads to dipole blockade. In addition, we show that these two qubits are strongly entangled over a broad regime of the system parameters. We show that a strong signature of this dipole blockade is the bunching property of the cavity photons which thus provides a possible measurement of the dipole blockade. We present dynamical features of the dipole blockade without dipole-dipole interaction. The proposal presented in this work can be realized not only in traditional cavity QED, but also in non-cavity topological photonics involving edge modes.
