Evidences for the random singlet phase in a new honeycomb iridate SrIr$_2$O$_{6-δ}$

Strong spin-orbital-coupling magnetic systems with the honeycomb structure can provide bond-directional interactions which may result in Kitaev quantum spin liquids and exotic anyonic excitations. However, one of the key ingredients in real materials$-$disorders$-$has been much less studied in Kitaev systems. Here we synthesized a trigonal SrIr$_2$O$_{6-δ}$ with $δ\approx 0.25$, which consists of two-dimensional honeycomb Ir planes with edge-sharing IrO$_6$ octahedra. First-principles computation and experimental measurements suggest that the electronic system is gapped, and there should be no magnetic moment as the Ir$^{5+}$ ion has no unpaired electrons. However, significant magnetism has been observed in the material, and it can be attributed to disorders that are most likely from oxygen vacancies. No magnetic order is found down to 0.05 K, and the low-temperature magnetic properties exhibit power-law behaviors in magnetic susceptibility and zero-field specific heat, and a single-parameter scaling of the specific heat under magnetic fields. These results provide strong evidence for the existence of the random singlet phase in SrIr$_2$O$_{6-δ}$, which offers a different member to the family of spin-orbital entangled iridates and Kitaev materials.

Learnability and Positive Equivalence Relations

Prior work of Gavryushkin, Khoussainov, Jain and Stephan investigated what algebraic structures can be realised in worlds given by a positive (= recursively enumerable) equivalence relation which partitions the natural numbers into infinitely many equivalence classes. The present work investigates the infinite one-one numbered recursively enumerable (r.e.) families realised by such relations and asks how the choice of the equivalence relation impacts the learnability properties of these classes when studying learnability in the limit from positive examples, also known as learning from text. For all choices of such positive equivalence relations, for each of the following entries, there are one-one numbered r.e. families which satisfy it: (a) they are behaviourally correctly learnable but not vacillatorily learnable; (b) they are explanatorily learnable but not confidently learnable; (c) they are not behaviourally correctly learnable. Furthermore, there is a positive equivalence relation which enforces that (d) every vacillatorily learnable one-one numbered family of languages closed under this equivalence relation is already explanatorily learnable and cannot be confidently learnable.

Identification of Magnetic Interactions and High-field Quantum Spin Liquid in $α$-RuCl$_3$

The frustrated magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$ constitutes a fascinating quantum material platform that harbors the intriguing Kitaev physics. However, a consensus on its intricate spin interactions and field-induced quantum phases has not been reached yet. Here we exploit multiple state-of-the-art many-body methods and determine the microscopic spin model that quantitatively explains major observations in $α$-RuCl$_3$, including the zigzag order, double-peak specific heat, magnetic anisotropy, and the characteristic M-star dynamical spin structure, etc. According to our model simulations, the in-plane field drives the system into the polarized phase at about 7 T and a thermal fractionalization occurs at finite temperature, reconciling observations in different experiments. Under out-of-plane fields, the zigzag order is suppressed at 35 T, above which, and below a polarization field of 100 T level, there emerges a field-induced quantum spin liquid. The fractional entropy and algebraic low-temperature specific heat unveil the nature of a gapless spin liquid, which can be explored in high-field measurements on $α$-RuCl$_3$.

Generative Adversarial Networks: A Survey Towards Private and Secure Applications

Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) have promoted a variety of applications in computer vision, natural language processing, etc. due to its generative model's compelling ability to generate realistic examples plausibly drawn from an existing distribution of samples. GAN not only provides impressive performance on data generation-based tasks but also stimulates fertilization for privacy and security oriented research because of its game theoretic optimization strategy. Unfortunately, there are no comprehensive surveys on GAN in privacy and security, which motivates this survey paper to summarize those state-of-the-art works systematically. The existing works are classified into proper categories based on privacy and security functions, and this survey paper conducts a comprehensive analysis of their advantages and drawbacks. Considering that GAN in privacy and security is still at a very initial stage and has imposed unique challenges that are yet to be well addressed, this paper also sheds light on some potential privacy and security applications with GAN and elaborates on some future research directions.

Search from History and Reason for Future: Two-stage Reasoning on Temporal Knowledge Graphs

Temporal Knowledge Graphs (TKGs) have been developed and used in many different areas. Reasoning on TKGs that predicts potential facts (events) in the future brings great challenges to existing models. When facing a prediction task, human beings usually search useful historical information (i.e., clues) in their memories and then reason for future meticulously. Inspired by this mechanism, we propose CluSTeR to predict future facts in a two-stage manner, Clue Searching and Temporal Reasoning, accordingly. Specifically, at the clue searching stage, CluSTeR learns a beam search policy via reinforcement learning (RL) to induce multiple clues from historical facts. At the temporal reasoning stage, it adopts a graph convolution network based sequence method to deduce answers from clues. Experiments on four datasets demonstrate the substantial advantages of CluSTeR compared with the state-of-the-art methods. Moreover, the clues found by CluSTeR further provide interpretability for the results.

BASS: Boosting Abstractive Summarization with Unified Semantic Graph

Abstractive summarization for long-document or multi-document remains challenging for the Seq2Seq architecture, as Seq2Seq is not good at analyzing long-distance relations in text. In this paper, we present BASS, a novel framework for Boosting Abstractive Summarization based on a unified Semantic graph, which aggregates co-referent phrases distributing across a long range of context and conveys rich relations between phrases. Further, a graph-based encoder-decoder model is proposed to improve both the document representation and summary generation process by leveraging the graph structure. Specifically, several graph augmentation methods are designed to encode both the explicit and implicit relations in the text while the graph-propagation attention mechanism is developed in the decoder to select salient content into the summary. Empirical results show that the proposed architecture brings substantial improvements for both long-document and multi-document summarization tasks.

Symmetry protected topological edge modes and emergent partial time reversal symmetry breaking in open quantum many-body systems

Symmetry-protected topological edge modes are one of the most remarkable phenomena in topological physics. Here, we formulate and quantitatively examine the effect of a quantum bath on these topological edge modes. Using the density matrix renormalization group method, we study the ground state of a composite system of spin-1 quantum chain, where the system and the bath degrees of freedom are treated on the same footing. We focus on the dependence of these edge modes on the global/partial symmetries of system-bath coupling and on the features of the quantum bath. It is shown that the time-reversal symmetry(TRS) plays a special role for an open quantum system, where an emergent partial TRS breaking will result in a TRS-protected topological mode diffusing from the system edge into the bath, thus make it useless for quantum computation.

A Universal Urbach Rule for Disordered Organic Semiconductors

In crystalline semiconductors, absorption onset sharpness is characterized by temperature dependent Urbach energies. These energies quantify the static, structural disorder causing localized exponential-tail states, and dynamic disorder from electron-phonon scattering. Applicability of this exponential-tail model to disordered solids has been long debated. Nonetheless, exponential fittings are routinely applied to sub-gap absorption analysis of organic semiconductors. Herein, we elucidate the sub-gap spectral line-shapes of organic semiconductors and their blends by temperature-dependent quantum efficiency measurements. We find that sub-gap absorption due to singlet excitons is universally dominated by thermal broadening at low photon energies and the associated Urbach energy equals the thermal energy, regardless of static disorder. This is consistent with absorptions obtained from a convolution of Gaussian density of excitonic states weighted by Boltzmann-like thermally activated optical transitions. A simple model is presented that explains absorption line-shapes of disordered systems, and we also provide a strategy to determine the excitonic disorder energy. Our findings elaborate the meaning of the Urbach energy in molecular solids and relate the photo-physics to static disorder, crucial for optimizing organic solar cells for which we present a new radiative open-circuit voltage limit.

Quantum-enhanced data classification with a variational entangled sensor network

Variational quantum circuits (VQCs) built upon noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) hardware, in conjunction with classical processing, constitute a promising architecture for quantum simulations, classical optimization, and machine learning. However, the required VQC depth to demonstrate a quantum advantage over classical schemes is beyond the reach of available NISQ devices. Supervised learning assisted by an entangled sensor network (SLAEN) is a distinct paradigm that harnesses VQCs trained by classical machine-learning algorithms to tailor multipartite entanglement shared by sensors for solving practically useful data-processing problems. Here, we report the first experimental demonstration of SLAEN and show an entanglement-enabled reduction in the error probability for classification of multidimensional radio-frequency signals. Our work paves a new route for quantum-enhanced data processing and its applications in the NISQ era.

Enhancement of the superconductivity and quantum metallic state in the thin film of superconducting Kagome metal KV$_3$Sb$_5$

Recently V-based Kagome metal attracted intense attention due to the emergence of superconductivity in the low temperature. Here we report the fabrication and physical investigations of the high quality single-crystalline thin films of the Kagome metal KV$_3$Sb$_5$. For the sample with the thickness of about 15 nm, the temperature dependent resistance reveals a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) type behavior, indicating the presence of two-dimensional superconductivity. Compared with the bulk sample, the onset transition temperature $T^{onset}_{c}$ and the out-of-plane upper critical field $H_{c2}$ are enhanced by 15\% and more than 10 times respectively. Moreover, the zero-resistance state is destroyed by a magnetic field as low as 50 Oe. Meanwhile, the temperature-independent resistance is observed in a wide field region, which is the hallmark of quantum metallic state. Our results provide evidences for the existence of unconventional superconductivity in this material.

Coherent photoproduction of low-$p_{T}$ charmonium in peripheral heavy ion collisions within the color dipole model

We calculate the centrality dependence for coherent photoproduction of very low-$p_{T}$ $J/ψ$ at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies within the impact parameter dependent saturated color dipole model. By using the large equivalent photon fluxes, we present the differential cross section of very low-$p_{T}$ $J/ψ$ produced by coherent photonuclear in peripheral heavy-ion collisions. The numerical results demonstrate that our calculation are agree with $J/ψ$ data in peripheral heavy ion collisions at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) energies.

People Counting using Radio Irregularity in Wireless Sensor Networks -- An Experimental Study

The Internet has grown into a large cyber-physical system centered that connects not just computer systems but a plethora of systems, devices, and objects, collectively referred to as "Things", giving rise to the term "Internet of Things" (IoT). It encompasses technologies for identification and tracking, sensing and actuation, both wired and wireless communications, and also, intelligence and cognition. Wireless communications, which is an integral part of IoT, suffers from radio irregularity -- a phenomenon referring to radio waves being selectively absorbed, reflected or scattered by objects in their paths, e.g., human bodies that comprises liquid, bone and flesh. Radio irregularity is often regarded as a problem in wireless communications but, with the envisioned pervasiveness of IoT, we aim to exploit radio irregularity as a means to detect and estimate the number of people. We demonstrate how radio signal fluctuations arising from radio irregularity, combined with discriminant analysis, can be used to provide a simple low-cost alternative to dedicated sensing systems for indoor people counting.

Theory of transformation-mediated twinning

High-density and nanosized deformation twins in face-centered cubic (fcc)materials can effectively improve the combination of strength and ductility. However, the microscopic dislocation mechanisms enabling a high twinnability remain elusive. Twinning usually occurs via continuous nucleation and gliding of twinning partial dislocations on consecutive close-packed atomic planes. Here we unveil a completely different twinning mechanism being active in metastable fcc materials. The transformation-mediated twinning (TMT) is featured by a preceding displacive transformation from the fcc phase to the hexagonal close-packed (hcp) one, followed by a second-step transformation from the hcp phase to the fcc twin. The nucleation of the intermediate hcp phase is driven by the thermodynamic instability and the negative stacking fault energy of the metastable fcc phase. The intermediate hcp structure is characterized by the easy slips of Shockley partial dislocations on the basal planes, which leads to both fcc and fcc twin platelets during deformation, creating more twin boundaries and further enhancing the prosperity of twins. The disclosed fundamental understanding of the complex dislocation mechanism of deformation twinning in metastable alloys paves the road to design novel materials with outstanding mechanical properties.

MUSE: Multi-faceted Attention for Signed Network Embedding

Signed network embedding is an approach to learn low-dimensional representations of nodes in signed networks with both positive and negative links, which facilitates downstream tasks such as link prediction with general data mining frameworks. Due to the distinct properties and significant added value of negative links, existing signed network embedding methods usually design dedicated methods based on social theories such as balance theory and status theory. However, existing signed network embedding methods ignore the characteristics of multiple facets of each node and mix them up in one single representation, which limits the ability to capture the fine-grained attentions between node pairs. In this paper, we propose MUSE, a MUlti-faceted attention-based Signed network Embedding framework to tackle this problem. Specifically, a joint intra- and inter-facet attention mechanism is introduced to aggregate fine-grained information from neighbor nodes. Moreover, balance theory is also utilized to guide information aggregation from multi-order balanced and unbalanced neighbors. Experimental results on four real-world signed network datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed framework.

Multi-scale PIIFD for Registration of Multi-source Remote Sensing Images

This paper aims at providing multi-source remote sensing images registered in geometric space for image fusion. Focusing on the characteristics and differences of multi-source remote sensing images, a feature-based registration algorithm is implemented. The key technologies include image scale-space for implementing multi-scale properties, Harris corner detection for keypoints extraction, and partial intensity invariant feature descriptor (PIIFD) for keypoints description. Eventually, a multi-scale Harris-PIIFD image registration algorithm framework is proposed. The experimental results of four sets of representative real data show that the algorithm has excellent, stable performance in multi-source remote sensing image registration, and can achieve accurate spatial alignment, which has strong practical application value and certain generalization ability.

Temporal Knowledge Graph Reasoning Based on Evolutional Representation Learning

Knowledge Graph (KG) reasoning that predicts missing facts for incomplete KGs has been widely explored. However, reasoning over Temporal KG (TKG) that predicts facts in the future is still far from resolved. The key to predict future facts is to thoroughly understand the historical facts. A TKG is actually a sequence of KGs corresponding to different timestamps, where all concurrent facts in each KG exhibit structural dependencies and temporally adjacent facts carry informative sequential patterns. To capture these properties effectively and efficiently, we propose a novel Recurrent Evolution network based on Graph Convolution Network (GCN), called RE-GCN, which learns the evolutional representations of entities and relations at each timestamp by modeling the KG sequence recurrently. Specifically, for the evolution unit, a relation-aware GCN is leveraged to capture the structural dependencies within the KG at each timestamp. In order to capture the sequential patterns of all facts in parallel, the historical KG sequence is modeled auto-regressively by the gate recurrent components. Moreover, the static properties of entities such as entity types, are also incorporated via a static graph constraint component to obtain better entity representations. Fact prediction at future timestamps can then be realized based on the evolutional entity and relation representations. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the RE-GCN model obtains substantial performance and efficiency improvement for the temporal reasoning tasks on six benchmark datasets. Especially, it achieves up to 11.46\% improvement in MRR for entity prediction with up to 82 times speedup comparing to the state-of-the-art baseline.

Residues, modularity, and the Cardy limit of the 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ superconformal index

We compute the superconformal index of the $\mathcal{N}=4$ $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory through a residue calculation. The method is similar in spirit to the Bethe Ansatz formalism, except that all poles are explicitly known, and we do not require specialization of any of the chemical potentials. Our expression for the index allows us to revisit the Cardy limit using modular properties of four-dimensional supersymmetric partition functions. We find that all residues contribute at leading order in the Cardy limit. In a specific region of flavour chemical potential space, close to the two unrefined points, in fact all residues contribute universally. These universal residues precisely agree with the entropy functions of the asymptotically AdS$_5$ black hole and its "twin saddle" respectively. Finally, we discuss how our formula is suited to study the implications of four-dimensional modularity for the index beyond the Cardy limit.

Discover the Hidden Attack Path in Multi-domain Cyberspace Based on Reinforcement Learning

In this work, we present a learning-based approach to analysis cyberspace security configuration. Unlike prior methods, our approach has the ability to learn from past experience and improve over time. In particular, as we train over a greater number of agents as attackers, our method becomes better at discovering hidden attack paths for previously methods, especially in multi-domain cyberspace. To achieve these results, we pose discovering attack paths as a Reinforcement Learning (RL) problem and train an agent to discover multi-domain cyberspace attack paths. To enable our RL policy to discover more hidden attack paths and shorter attack paths, we ground representation introduction an multi-domain action select module in RL. Our objective is to discover more hidden attack paths and shorter attack paths by our proposed method, to analysis the weakness of cyberspace security configuration. At last, we designed a simulated cyberspace experimental environment to verify our proposed method, the experimental results show that our method can discover more hidden multi-domain attack paths and shorter attack paths than existing baseline methods.
