On The Computability of Perfect Subsets of Sets with Positive Measure

A set $X \subseteq 2^ω$ with positive measure contains a perfect subset. We study such perfect subsets from the viewpoint of computability and prove that these sets can have weak computational strength. Then we connect the existence of perfect subsets of sets with positive measure with reverse mathematics.

Rainbow triangles in arc-colored digraphs

Let $D$ be an arc-colored digraph. The arc number $a(D)$ of $D$ is defined as the number of arcs of $D$. The color number $c(D)$ of $D$ is defined as the number of colors assigned to the arcs of $D$. A rainbow triangle in $D$ is a directed triangle in which every pair of arcs have distinct colors. Let $f(D)$ be the smallest integer such that if $c(D)\geq f(D)$, then $D$ contains a rainbow triangle. In this paper we obtain $f(\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n})$ and $f(T_n)$, where $\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n}$ is a complete digraph of order $n$ and $T_n$ is a strongly connected tournament of order $n$. Moreover we characterize the arc-colored complete digraph $\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n}$ with $c(\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n})=f(\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n})-1$ and containing no rainbow triangles. We also prove that an arc-colored digraph $D$ on $n$ vertices contains a rainbow triangle when $a(D)+c(D)\geq a(\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n})+f(\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n})$, which is a directed extension of the undirected case.

Non-volatile ferroelectric memory effect in ultrathin α-In2Se3

Recent experiments on layered α-In2Se3 have confirmed its room-temperature ferroelectricity under ambient condition. This observation renders α-In2Se3 an excellent platform for developing two-dimensional (2D) layered-material based electronics with nonvolatile functionality. In this letter, we demonstrate non-volatile memory effect in a hybrid 2D ferroelectric field effect transistor (FeFET) made of ultrathin α-In2Se3 and graphene. The resistance of graphene channel in the FeFET is tunable and retentive due to the electrostatic doping, which stems from the electric polarization of the ferroelectric α-In2Se3. The electronic logic bit can be represented and stored with different orientations of electric dipoles in the top-gate ferroelectric. The 2D FeFET can be randomly re-written over more than $10^5$ cycles without losing the non-volatility. Our approach demonstrates a protype of re-writable non-volatile memory with ferroelectricity in van de Waals 2D materials.

Structures and Diffusion of Two Dimensional Dusty Plasmas on One Dimensional Periodic Substrates

Using numerical simulations, we examine the structure and diffusion of a two-dimensional dusty plasma (2DDP) in the presence of a one-dimensional periodic substrate (1DPS) as a function of increasing substrate strength. Both the pair correlation function perpendicular to the substrate modulation and the mean squared displacement (MSD) of dust particles are calculated. It is found that both the structure and dynamics of 2DDP exhibit strong anisotropic effects, due to the applied 1DPS. As the substrate strength increases from 0, the structure order of dusty plasma along each potential well of 1DPS increases first probably due to the competition between the inter-particle interactions and the particle-substrate interactions, and then decreases gradually, which may be due to the reduced dimensionality and the enhanced fluctuations. The obtained MSD along potential wells of 1DPS clearly shows three processes of diffusion in our studied 2DDP. Between the initial ballistic and finally diffusive motion, there is the intermediate sub-diffusion discovered here, which may result from the substrate-induced distortion of the caging dynamics.

12-photon entanglement and scalable scattershot boson sampling with optimal entangled-photon pairs from parametric down-conversion

Entangled photon sources with simultaneously near-unity heralding efficiency and indistinguishability are the fundamental elements for scalable photonic quantum technologies. We design and realize a degenerate entangled-photon source from an ultrafast pulsed laser pumped spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC), which show simultaneously ~97% heralding efficiency and ~96% indistinguishability between independent single photons. Such a high-efficiency and frequency-uncorrelated SPDC source allows generation of the first 12-photon genuine entanglement with a state fidelity of 0.572(24). We further demonstrate a blueprint of scalable scattershot boson sampling using 12 SPDC sources and a 12*12-modes interferometer for three-, four-, and five-boson sampling, which yields count rates more than four orders of magnitudes higher than all previous SPDC experiments. Our work immediately enables high-efficiency implementations of multiplexing, scattershot boson sampling, and heralded creation of remotely entangled photons, opening up a promising pathway to scalable photonic quantum technologies.

Knowing Where to Look? Analysis on Attention of Visual Question Answering System

Attention mechanisms have been widely used in Visual Question Answering (VQA) solutions due to their capacity to model deep cross-domain interactions. Analyzing attention maps offers us a perspective to find out limitations of current VQA systems and an opportunity to further improve them. In this paper, we select two state-of-the-art VQA approaches with attention mechanisms to study their robustness and disadvantages by visualizing and analyzing their estimated attention maps. We find that both methods are sensitive to features, and simultaneously, they perform badly for counting and multi-object related questions. We believe that the findings and analytical method will help researchers identify crucial challenges on the way to improve their own VQA systems.

Adapting Blockchain Technology for Scientific Computing

Blockchain stores information into a chain of "blocks", whose integrity is usually guaranteed by Proof of Work (PoW). In many blockchain applications (including cryptocurrencies), users compete with each other to win the ownership of the blocks, a process commonly referred as "mining". Mining activities consume huge amount of power, while the outcome appears to be useless besides validating a block. Here we discuss the requirements of designing a new PoW algorithm. We also propose a PoW scheme to help solve high-dimension, non-linear optimization problems. Simulation experiments of blockchains generated by three miners solved an instance of Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP), a well-known NP-hard problem. The revised scheme enables us to address difficult scientific questions as a byproduct of mining.

Exponential Thermal Tensor Network Approach for Quantum Lattice Models

We speed up thermal simulations of quantum many-body systems in both one- (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) models in an exponential way by iteratively projecting the thermal density matrix $\hatρ=e^{-β\hat{H}}$ onto itself. We refer to this scheme of doubling $β$ in each step of the imaginary time evolution as the exponential tensor renormalization group (XTRG). This approach is in stark contrast to conventional Trotter-Suzuki-type methods which evolve $\hatρ$ on a linear quasi-continuous grid in inverse temperature $β\equiv 1/T$. In general, XTRG can reach low temperatures exponentially fast, and thus not only saves computational time but also merits better accuracy due to significantly fewer truncation steps. We work in an (effective) 1D setting exploiting matrix product operators (MPOs) which allows us to fully and uniquely implement non-Abelian and Abelian symmetries to greatly enhance numerical performance. We use our XTRG machinery to explore the thermal properties of Heisenberg models on 1D chains and 2D square and triangular lattices down to low temperatures approaching ground state properties. The entanglement properties, as well as the renormalization group flow of entanglement spectra in MPOs, are discussed, where logarithmic entropies (approximately $\lnβ$) are shown in both spin chains and square lattice models with gapless towers of states. We also reveal that XTRG can be employed to accurately simulate the Heisenberg XXZ model on the square lattice which undergoes a thermal phase transition. We determine its critical temperature based on thermal physical observables, as well as entanglement measures. Overall, we demonstrate that XTRG provides an elegant, versatile, and highly competitive approach to explore thermal properties in both 1D and 2D quantum lattice models.

Realizing an Epitaxial Stanene with an Insulating Bandgap

Stanene, a single atomic layer of Sn in a honeycomb lattice, is predicted a candidate wide bandgap two-dimensional (2D) topological insulator and can host intriguing topological states of matter such as quantum anomalous Hall effect and topological superconductivity with different surface modifications. Despite intensive research efforts, one still cannot obtain bulk-insulating stanene samples-a prerequisite for any transport studies and applications of stanene. Here we show the experimental realization of an epitaxial stanene with an insulating bulk bandgap by using PbTe(111) substrates. With low-temperature molecular beam epitaxy, we are able to grow single layer stanene on PbTe(111). In-situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy shows the characteristic stanene bands with its Fermi level lying in the bandgap. Doping Sr in PbTe removes the substrate states located in the stanene gap, resulting in a stanene sample with truly insulating bulk. This experimental progress paves the way for studies of stanene-based topological quantum effects.

Matter Effect of Light Sterile Neutrino: An Exact Analytical Approach

The light sterile neutrino, if it exists, will give additional contribution to matter effect when active neutrinos propagate through terrestrial matter. In the simplest 3+1 scheme, three more rotation angles and two more CP-violating phases in lepton mixing matrix make the interaction complicated formally. In this work, the exact analytical expressions for active neutrino oscillation probabilities in terrestrial matter, including sterile neutrino contribution, are derived. It is pointed out that this set of formulas contain information both in matter and in vacuum, and can be easily tuned by choosing related parameters. Based on the generic exact formulas, we present oscillation probabilities of typic medium and long baseline experiments. Taking NO$ν$A experiment as an example, we show that in particular parameter space sterile neutrino gives important contribution to terrestrial matter effect, and Dirac phases play a vital role.

Stochastic Answer Networks for SQuAD 2.0

This paper presents an extension of the Stochastic Answer Network (SAN), one of the state-of-the-art machine reading comprehension models, to be able to judge whether a question is unanswerable or not. The extended SAN contains two components: a span detector and a binary classifier for judging whether the question is unanswerable, and both components are jointly optimized. Experiments show that SAN achieves the results competitive to the state-of-the-art on Stanford Question Answering Dataset (SQuAD) 2.0. To facilitate the research on this field, we release our code: https://github.com/kevinduh/san_mrc.

Experimental realization of an intrinsic magnetic topological insulator

Intrinsic magnetic topological insulator (TI) is a stoichiometric magnetic compound possessing both inherent magnetic order and topological electronic states. Such a material can provide a shortcut to various novel topological quantum effects but remains elusive experimentally so far. Here, we report the experimental realization of high-quality thin films of an intrinsic magnetic TI---MnBi$_2$Te$_4$---by alternate growth of a Bi$_2$Te$_3$ quintuple-layer and a MnTe bilayer with molecular beam epitaxy. The material shows the archetypical Dirac surface states in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and is demonstrated to be an antiferromagnetic topological insulator with ferromagnetic surfaces by magnetic and transport measurements as well as first-principles calculations. The unique magnetic and topological electronic structures and their interplays enable the material to embody rich quantum phases such as quantum anomalous Hall insulators and axion insulators in a well-controlled way.

Learning Universal Sentence Representations with Mean-Max Attention Autoencoder

In order to learn universal sentence representations, previous methods focus on complex recurrent neural networks or supervised learning. In this paper, we propose a mean-max attention autoencoder (mean-max AAE) within the encoder-decoder framework. Our autoencoder rely entirely on the MultiHead self-attention mechanism to reconstruct the input sequence. In the encoding we propose a mean-max strategy that applies both mean and max pooling operations over the hidden vectors to capture diverse information of the input. To enable the information to steer the reconstruction process dynamically, the decoder performs attention over the mean-max representation. By training our model on a large collection of unlabelled data, we obtain high-quality representations of sentences. Experimental results on a broad range of 10 transfer tasks demonstrate that our model outperforms the state-of-the-art unsupervised single methods, including the classical skip-thoughts and the advanced skip-thoughts+LN model. Furthermore, compared with the traditional recurrent neural network, our mean-max AAE greatly reduce the training time.

Efficient and Privacy-preserving Voice-based Search over mHealth Data

In-home IoT devices play a major role in healthcare systems as smart personal assistants. They usually come with a voice-enabled feature to add an extra level of usability and convenience to elderly, disabled people, and patients. In this paper, we propose an efficient and privacy-preserving voice-based search scheme to enhance the efficiency and the privacy of in-home healthcare applications. We consider an application scenario where patients use the devices to record and upload their voice to servers and the caregivers search the interested voices of their patient's based on the voice content, mood, tone and background sound. Our scheme preserves the richness and privacy of voice data and enables accurate and efficient voice-based search, while in current systems that use speech recognition the richness and privacy of voice data are compromised. Specifically, our scheme achieves the privacy by employing a homomorphic encryption; only encrypted voice data is uploaded to the server who is unable to access the original voice data. In addition, our scheme enables the server to selectively and accurately respond to caregiver's queries on the voice data based on voice's feature similarity. We evaluate our scheme through real experiments and show that our scheme even with privacy preservation can successfully match similar voice data at an average accuracy of 80.8%.

Exotic dynamical evolution in a secant-pulse driven quantum system

We investigate an explicitly time-dependent quantum system driven by a secant-pulse external field. By solving the Schrödinger equation exactly, we elucidate exotic properties of the system with respect to its dynamical evolution: on the one hand, the system is shown to be essentially nonadiabatic, which prohibits an adiabatic approximation for its dynamics; on the other hand, the loop evolution of the model can induce a geometric phase which, analogous to the Berry phase of the cyclic adiabatic evolution, is in direct proportion to the solid angle subtended by the path of the state vector. Moreover, we extend the model and show that the described properties coincide in a special family of secant-pulse-driven models.

TreeSegNet: Adaptive Tree CNNs for Subdecimeter Aerial Image Segmentation

For the task of subdecimeter aerial imagery segmentation, fine-grained semantic segmentation results are usually difficult to obtain because of complex remote sensing content and optical conditions. Recently, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have shown outstanding performance on this task. Although many deep neural network structures and techniques have been applied to improve the accuracy, few have paid attention to better differentiating the easily confused classes. In this paper, we propose TreeSegNet which adopts an adaptive network to increase the classification rate at the pixelwise level. Specifically, based on the infrastructure of DeepUNet, a Tree-CNN block in which each node represents a ResNeXt unit is constructed adaptively according to the confusion matrix and the proposed TreeCutting algorithm. By transporting feature maps through concatenating connections, the Tree-CNN block fuses multiscale features and learns best weights for the model. In experiments on the ISPRS 2D semantic labeling Potsdam dataset, the results obtained by TreeSegNet are better than those of other published state-of-the-art methods. Detailed comparison and analysis show that the improvement brought by the adaptive Tree-CNN block is significant.

A Dynamic Service-Migration Mechanism in Edge Cognitive Computing

Driven by the vision of edge computing and the success of rich cognitive services based on artificial intelligence, a new computing paradigm, edge cognitive computing (ECC), is a promising approach that applies cognitive computing at the edge of the network. ECC has the potential to provide the cognition of users and network environmental information, and further to provide elastic cognitive computing services to achieve a higher energy efficiency and a higher Quality of Experience (QoE) compared to edge computing. This paper firstly introduces our architecture of the ECC and then describes its design issues in detail. Moreover, we propose an ECC-based dynamic service migration mechanism to provide an insight into how cognitive computing is combined with edge computing. In order to evaluate the proposed mechanism, a practical platform for dynamic service migration is built up, where the services are migrated based on the behavioral cognition of a mobile user. The experimental results show that the proposed ECC architecture has ultra-low latency and a high user experience, while providing better service to the user, saving computing resources, and achieving a high energy efficiency.
