Effects of single- and multi-substituted Zn ions in doped-122 type iron-based superconductors

Recent experiments on Zn-substituted 122-type iron-based superconductors (FeSCs) at electron- and hole- doped region provide us with a testing ground for understanding the effect of Zn impurities in these systems. Our first-principle calculations of the electronic structure reveal that the Zn 3d orbitals are far below the Fermi level and chemically inactive, while the Zn 4s-orbital is partially occupied and its wave function overlapping with those 3d-orbitals of neighboring Fe-ions. This suggests that the impurity effect is originating in the Zn 4s-orbital, not its 3d-orbitals. Employing a phenomenological two-orbital lattice model for 122-FeSCs and the self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, we study how the Zn-impurities suppress the superconductivity in electron- and hole- doped compounds. Our obtained results qualitatively agree with the experimental measurements.

Lagrangian Particle Method for Compressible Fluid Dynamics

A new Lagrangian particle method for solving Euler equations for compressible inviscid fluid or gas flows is proposed. Similar to smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH), the method represents fluid cells with Lagrangian particles and is suitable for the simulation of complex free surface / multiphase flows. The main contributions of our method, which is different from SPH in all other aspects, are (a) significant improvement of approximation of differential operators based on a polynomial fit via weighted least squares approximation and the convergence of prescribed order, (b) an upwinding second-order particle-based algorithm with limiter, providing accuracy and long term stability, (c) elimination of the dependence on artificial parameters such as the smoothening length in SPH, causing difficulties in the case of large density changes, and (d) accurate resolution of states at free interfaces. Numerical verification test demonstrating the convergence order are presented as well as examples of complex free surface flows.

Novel Collective Phenomena in High-Energy Proton-Proton and Proton-Nucleus Collisions

The observation of long-range collective correlations for particles emitted in high-multiplicity pp and pPb collisions has opened up new opportunities of investigating novel high-density QCD phenomena in small colliding systems. We review experimental results related to the studies of collective phenomena in small systems from RHIC and the LHC over the past several years. Latest development in theoretical interpretations motivated by different frameworks are also reviewed, and confronted with the experimental data. Perspectives on possible future directions are discussed, with the aim of further exploring the rich emergent QCD phenomena.

Bearing fault diagnosis based on spectrum images of vibration signals

Bearing fault diagnosis has been a challenge in the monitoring activities of rotating machinery, and it's receiving more and more attention. The conventional fault diagnosis methods usually extract features from the waveforms or spectrums of vibration signals in order to realize fault classification. In this paper, a novel feature in the form of images is presented, namely the spectrum images of vibration signals. The spectrum images are simply obtained by doing fast Fourier transformation. Such images are processed with two-dimensional principal component analysis (2DPCA) to reduce the dimensions, and then a minimum distance method is applied to classify the faults of bearings. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified with experimental data.

Multifractal and Network Analysis of Phase Transition

Many models and real complex systems possess critical thresholds at which the systems shift from one sate to another. The discovery of the early warnings of the systems in the vicinity of critical point are of great importance to estimate how far a system is from a critical threshold. Multifractal Detrended Fluctuation analysis (MF-DFA) and visibility graph method have been employed to investigate the fluctuation and geometrical structures of magnetization time series of two-dimensional Ising model around critical point. The Hurst exponent has been confirmed to be a good indicator of phase transition. Increase of the multifractality of the time series have been observed from generalized Hurst exponents and singularity spectrum. Both Long-term correlation and broad probability density function are identified to be the sources of multifractality of time series near critical regime. Heterogeneous nature of the networks constructed from magnetization time series have validated the fractal properties of magnetization time series from complex network perspective. Evolution of the topology quantities such as clustering coefficient, average degree, average shortest path length, density, assortativity and heterogeneity serve as early warnings of phase transition. Those methods and results can provide new insights about analysis of phase transition problems and can be used as early warnings for various complex systems.

The effects of electron correlation and spin-orbit coupling in the isovalent Pd-doped superconductor SrPt$_3$P

We present a systematical study on the roles of electron correlation and spin-orbit coupling in the isovalent Pd-doped superconductor SrPt$_3$P. By using solid state reaction method, we fabricated the strong spin-orbit coupling superconductors Sr(Pt$_{1-x}$Pd$_x$)$_3$P with strong electron correlated Pd dopant of the $4d$ orbital. As increasing the isovalent Pd concentrations without introducing any extra electron/hole carriers, the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ decreases monotonously, which suggests the existence of competition between spin-orbit coupling and electron correlation in the superconducting state. In addition, the electronic band structure calculations demonstrate that the strength of electron susceptibility is suppressed gradually by the Pd dopant suggesting the incompatible relation between spin-orbit coupling and electron correlation, which is also consistent with experimental measurements. Our results provide significant insights in the natures of the interplay between the spin-orbit coupling and the electron correlation in superconductivity, and may pave a way for understanding the mechanism of superconductivity in this 5d-metal-based compound.

Effect of interstitial-driven lattice expansion on the stacking fault energy in austenitic steels

Interstitials (carbon and nitrogen) are crucial alloying elements for optimizing the mechanical performance of the twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) steels in terms of the stacking fault energy (SFE). First-principles calculations have been performed to study the effect of interstitial-induced lattice expansion on the SFE. Comparing the predictions with the SFEs measured for alloys containing C and N, our results suggest that the dominant effect of these interstitials on the SFE is due to the lattice expansion effect.

First-Principles prediction of the deformation modes in austenitic Fe-Cr-Ni alloys

First-principles alloy theory is used to establish the $γ$-surface of Fe-Cr-Ni alloys as function of chemical composition and temperature. The theoretical stacking fault energy (SFE) versus chemistry and temperature trends agree well with experiments. Combining our results with the recent plasticity theory based on the $γ$-surface, the stacking fault formation is predicted to be the leading deformation mechanism for alloys with effective stacking fault energy below about 18 mJ m$^{-2}$. Alloys with SFE above this critical value show both twinning and full slip at room temperature and twinning remains a possible deformation mode even at elevated temperatures, in line with observations.

Measurement of the squeezed vacuum state by a bichromatic local oscillator

We present the experimental measurement of a squeezed vacuum state by means of a bichromatic local oscillator (BLO). A pair of local oscillators at $\pm$5 MHz around the central frequency $ω_{0}$ of the fundamental field with equal power are generated by three acousto-optic modulators and phase-locked, which are used as a BLO. The squeezed vacuum light are detected by a phase-sensitive balanced-homodyne detection with a BLO. The baseband signal around $ω_{0}$ combined with a broad squeezed field can be detected with the sensitivity below the shot-noise limit, in which the baseband signal is shifted to the vicinity of 5 MHz (the half of the BLO separation). This work has the important applications in quantum state measurement and quantum information

Exciton-dominated Dielectric Function of Atomically Thin MoS2 Films

We systematically measure the dielectric function of atomically thin MoS2 films with different layer numbers and demonstrate that excitonic effects play a dominant role in the dielectric function when the films are less than 5-7 layers thick. The dielectric function shows an anomalous dependence on the layer number. It decreases with the layer number increasing when the films are less than 5-7 layers thick but turns to increase with the layer number for thicker films. We show that this is because the excitonic effect is very strong in the thin MoS2 films and its contribution to the dielectric function may dominate over the contribution of the band structure. We also extract the value of layer-dependent exciton binding energy and Bohr radius in the films by fitting the experimental results with an intuitive model. The dominance of excitonic effects is in stark contrast with what reported at conventional materials whose dielectric functions are usually dictated by band structures. The knowledge of the dielectric function may enable capabilities to engineer the light-matter interactions of atomically thin MoS2 films for the development of novel photonic devices, such as metamaterials, waveguides, light absorbers, and light emitters.

Experimental study of balanced optical homodyne and heterodyne detection by controlling sideband modulation

We experimentally study optical homodyne and heterodyne detections with a same setup, which is flexible to manipulate the signal sideband modulation. When the modulation only generate a single signal sideband, the light field measurement by mixing the single sideband at $ω_{0}+Ω$ with a strong local oscillator at the carrier frequency $ω_{0}$ on a beam splitter become balanced heterodyne detection. When two signal sidebands at $ω_{0}\pmΩ$ are generated and the relative phase of the two sidebands is locked, this measurement corresponds to optical balanced homodyne detection. With this setup, we may confirm directly that the signal-to-noise ratio with heterodyne detection is two-fold worse than that with homodyne detection. This work will have important applications in quantum state measurement and quantum information.

Observation of universal strong orbital-dependent correlation effects in iron chalcogenides

Establishing the appropriate theoretical framework for unconventional superconductivity in the iron-based materials requires correct understanding of both the electron correlation strength and the role of Fermi surfaces. This fundamental issue becomes especially relevant with the discovery of the iron chalcogenide (FeCh) superconductors, the only iron-based family in proximity to an insulating phase. Here, we use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to measure three representative FeCh superconductors, FeTe0.56Se0.44, K0.76Fe1.72Se2, and monolayer FeSe film grown on SrTiO3. We show that, these FeChs are all in a strongly correlated regime at low temperatures, with an orbital-selective strong renormalization in the dxy bands despite having drastically different Fermi-surface topologies. Furthermore, raising temperature brings all three compounds from a metallic superconducting state to a phase where the dxy orbital loses all spectral weight while other orbitals remain itinerant. These observations establish that FeChs display universal orbital-selective strong correlation behaviors that are insensitive to the Fermi surface topology, and are close to an orbital-selective Mott phase (OSMP), hence placing strong constraints for theoretical understanding of iron-based superconductors.

Analytic connectivity of $k$-uniform hypergraphs

In this paper, we study the analytic connectivity of a $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$, denoted by $α(H)$. In addition to computing the analytic connectivity of a complete $k$-graph, we present several bounds on analytic connectivity that relate it with other graph invariants, such as degree, vertex connectivity, diameter, and isoperimetric number.

Hexagon-singlet solid ansatz for the spin-1 kagome antiferromagnet

We perform a systematic investigation on the hexagon-singlet solid (HSS) states, which are a class of spin liquid candidates for the spin-1 kagome antiferromagnet. With the Schwinger boson representation, we show that all HSS states have exponentially decaying correlations and can be interpreted as a (special) subset of the resonating Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) loop states. We provide a compact tensor network representation of the HSS states, with which we are able to calculate physical observables efficiently. We find that the HSS states have vanishing topological entanglement entropy, suggesting the absence of intrinsic topological order. We also employ the HSS states to perform a variational study of the spin-1 kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnetic model. When we use a restricted HSS ansatz preserving lattice symmetry, the best variational energy per site is found to be $e_0 = -1.3600$. In contrast, when allowing lattice symmetry breaking, we find a trimerized simplex valence bond crystal with a lower energy, $e_0=-1.3871$.

Thickness-Dependent Coherent Phonon Frequency in Ultrathin FeSe/SrTiO$_{3}$ Films

Ultrathin FeSe films grown on SrTiO$_{3}$ substrates are a recent milestone in atomic material engineering due to their important role in understanding unconventional superconductivity in Fe-based materials. Using femtosecond time- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, we study phonon frequencies in ultrathin FeSe/SrTiO$_{3}$ films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. After optical excitation, we observe periodic modulations of the photoelectron spectrum as a function of pump-probe delay for 1 unit cell, 3 unit cell, and 60 unit cell thick FeSe films. The frequencies of the coherent intensity oscillations increase from 5.00(2) to 5.25(2) THz with increasing film thickness. By comparing with previous works, we attribute this mode to the Se A$_\textrm{1g}$ phonon. The dominant mechanism for the phonon softening in 1 unit cell thick FeSe films is a substrate-induced lattice strain. Our results demonstrate an abrupt phonon renormalization due to a lattice mismatch between the ultrathin film and the substrate.

Broadband Linear-Dichroic Photodetector in a Black Phosphorus Vertical p-n Junction

The ability to detect light over a broad spectral range is central for practical optoelectronic applications, and has been successfully demonstrated with photodetectors of two-dimensional layered crystals such as graphene and MoS2. However, polarization sensitivity within such a photodetector remains elusive. Here we demonstrate a linear-dichroic broadband photodetector with layered black phosphorus transistors, using the strong intrinsic linear dichroism arising from the in-plane optical anisotropy with respect to the atom-buckled direction, which is polarization sensitive over a broad bandwidth from 400 nm to 3750 nm. Especially, a perpendicular build-in electric field induced by gating in black phosphorus transistors can spatially separate the photo-generated electrons and holes in the channel, effectively reducing their recombination rate, and thus enhancing the efficiency and performance for linear dichroism photodetection. This provides new functionality using anisotropic layered black phosphorus, thereby enabling novel optical and optoelectronic device applications.

Some aspects of holographic W-gravity

We use the Chern-Simons formulation of higher spin theories in three dimensions to study aspects of holographic W-gravity. Concepts which were useful in studies of pure bulk gravity theories, such as the Fefferman-Graham gauge and the residual gauge transformations, which induce Weyl transformations in the boundary theory and their higher spin generalizations, are reformulated in the Chern-Simons language. Flat connections that correspond to conformal and lightcone gauges in the boundary theory are considered.
