Topology-driven phase transitions in the classical monomer-dimer-loop model

In this work, we investigate the classical loop models doped with monomers and dimers on a square lattice, whose partition function can be expressed as a tensor network (TN). In the thermodynamic limit, we use the boundary matrix product state technique to contract the partition function TN, and determine the thermodynamic properties with high accuracy. In this monomer-dimer-loop model, we find a second-order phase transition between a trivial monomer-condensation and a loop-condensation (LC) phases, which can not be distinguished by any local order parameter, while nevertheless the two phases have distinct topological properties. In the LC phase, we find two degenerate dominating eigenvalues in the transfer-matrix spectrum, as well as a non-vanishing (nonlocal) string order parameter, both of which identify the \textit{topological ergodicity breaking} in the LC phase and can serve as the order parameter for detecting the phase transitions.

Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions and phase diagrams of the interacting monomer-dimer model on a checkerboard lattice

Using the tensor network approach, we investigate the monomer-dimer models on a checkerboard lattice, in which there are interactions (with strength $ν$) between the parallel dimers on half of the plaquettes. For the fully packed interacting dimer model, we observe a Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) transition between the lowtemperature symmetry breaking and the high-temperature critical phases; for the doped monomer-dimer casewith finite chemical potential $μ$, we also find an order-disorder phase transition which is of second order instead. We use the boundary matrix product state approach to detect the KT and second-order phase transitions and obtain the phase diagrams $ν-T$ and $μ-T$ . Moreover, for the noninteracting monomer-dimer model (setting $μ= ν= 0$), we get an extraordinarily accurate determination of the free energy per site (negative of the monomer-dimer constant $h_2$) as $f=-0.662\, 798\, 972\, 833\, 746$ with the dimer density $n=0.638\, 123\, 109\, 228\, 547$, both of 15 correct digits.

Beacon Node Placement for Minimal Localization Error

Beacon node placement, node-to-node measurement, and target node positioning are the three key steps for a localization process. However, compared with the other two steps, beacon node placement still lacks a comprehensive, systematic study in research literatures. To fill this gap, we address the Beacon Node Placment (BNP) problem that deploys beacon nodes for minimal localization error in this paper. BNP is difficult in that the localization error is determined by a complicated combination of factors, i.e., the localization error differing greatly under a different environment, with a different algorithm applied, or with a different type of beacon node used. In view of the hardness of BNP, we propose an approximate function to reduce time cost in localization error calculation, and also prove its time complexity and error bound. By approximation, a sub-optimal distribution of beacon nodes could be found within acceptable time cost for placement. In the experiment, we test our method and compare it with other node placement methods under various settings and environments. The experimental results show feasibility and effectiveness of our method in practice.

Criticality in Translation-Invariant Parafermion Chains

In this work we numerically study critical phases in translation-invariant $\mathbb{Z}_N$ parafermion chains with both nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor hopping terms. The model can be mapped to a $\mathbb{Z}_N$ spin model with nearest-neighbor couplings via a generalized Jordan-Wigner transformation and translation invariance ensures that the spin model is always self-dual. We first study the low-energy spectrum of chains with only nearest-neighbor coupling, which are mapped onto standard self-dual $\mathbb{Z}_N$ clock models. For $3\leq N\leq 6$ we match the numerical results to the known conformal field theory(CFT) identification. We then analyze in detail the phase diagram of a $N=3$ chain with both nearest and next-nearest neighbor hopping and six critical phases with central charges being $4/5$, 1 or 2 are found. We find continuous phase transitions between $c=1$ and $c=2$ phases, while the phase transition between $c=4/5$ and $c=1$ is conjectured to be of Kosterlitz-Thouless type.

Simplex valence-bond crystal in the spin-1 kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet

We investigate the ground state properties of a spin-1 kagome antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model using tensor-network (TN) methods. We obtain the energy per site {$e_0=-1.41090(2)$ with $D^*=8$ multiplets retained (i.e., a bond dimension of $D=24$), and $e_0=-1.4116(4)$ from large-$D$ extrapolation,} by accurate TN calculations directly in the thermodynamic limit. The symmetry between the two kinds of triangles is spontaneously broken, with a relative energy difference of $δ\approx$ 19\%, i.e, there is a trimerization (simplex) valence-bond order in the ground state. The spin-spin, dimer-dimer, and chirality-chirality correlation functions are found to decay exponentially with a rather short correlation length, showing that the ground state is gapped. We thus identify the ground state be a simplex valence-bond crystal (SVBC). We also discuss the spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on a kagome lattice, and determine its ground state phase diagram. Moreover, we implement non-abelian symmetries, here spin SU(2), in the TN algorithm, which improves the efficiency greatly and provides insight into the tensor structures.

Improved Image Deblurring based on Salient-region Segmentation

Image deblurring techniques play important roles in many image processing applications. As the blur varies spatially across the image plane, it calls for robust and effective methods to deal with the spatially-variant blur problem. In this paper, a Saliency-based Deblurring (SD) approach is proposed based on the saliency detection for salient-region segmentation and a corresponding compensate method for image deblurring. We also propose a PDE-based deblurring method which introduces an anisotropic Partial Differential Equation (PDE) model for latent image prediction and employs an adaptive optimization model in the kernel estimation and deconvolution steps. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Macroblock Classification Method for Video Applications Involving Motions

In this paper, a macroblock classification method is proposed for various video processing applications involving motions. Based on the analysis of the Motion Vector field in the compressed video, we propose to classify Macroblocks of each video frame into different classes and use this class information to describe the frame content. We demonstrate that this low-computation-complexity method can efficiently catch the characteristics of the frame. Based on the proposed macroblock classification, we further propose algorithms for different video processing applications, including shot change detection, motion discontinuity detection, and outlier rejection for global motion estimation. Experimental results demonstrate that the methods based on the proposed approach can work effectively on these applications.

Region-Based Rate-Control for H.264/AVC for Low Bit-Rate Applications

Rate-control plays an important role in video coding. However, in the conventional rate-control algorithms, the number and position of Macroblocks (MBs) inside one basic unit for rate-control is inflexible and predetermined. The different characteristics of the MBs are not fully considered. Also, there is no overall optimization of the coding of basic units. This paper proposes a new region-based rate-control scheme for H.264/AVC to improve the coding efficiency. The inter-frame information is explored to objectively divide one frame into multiple regions based on their rate-distortion behaviors. The MBs with the similar characteristics are classified into the same region, and the entire region instead of a single MB or a group of contiguous MBs is treated as a basic unit for rate-control. A linear rate-quantization stepsize model and a linear distortion-quantization stepsize model are proposed to accurately describe the rate-distortion characteristics for the region-based basic units. Moreover, based on the above linear models, an overall optimization model is proposed to obtain suitable Quantization Parameters (QPs) for the region-based basic units. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed region-based rate-control approach can achieve both better subjective and objective quality by performing the rate-control adaptively with the content, compared to the conventional rate-control approaches.

Systematic Search and A New Family of Skyrmion Materials

Magnetic skyrmions have recently attracted great attentions. However they are harbored in very limited numbers of magnets up to now. The search of new helimagnetic materials is thus an urgent topic in the field of skyrmion physics. In this letter, we provide a guideline on this issue, and discuss the possibility of realizing skyrmions in a new family of molybdenum nitrides $A_2$Mo$_3$N ($A$=Fe, Co, and Rh). By means of the first-principles calculations, the electronic and magnetic structures are calculated and the existence of strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is demonstrated.

The Hot QCD White Paper: Exploring the Phases of QCD at RHIC and the LHC

The past decade has seen huge advances in experimental measurements made in heavy ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and more recently at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). These new data, in combination with theoretical advances from calculations made in a variety of frameworks, have led to a broad and deep knowledge of the properties of thermal QCD matter. Increasingly quantitative descriptions of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) created in these collisions have established that the QGP is a strongly coupled liquid with the lowest value of specific viscosity ever measured. However, much remains to be learned about the precise nature of the initial state from which this liquid forms, how its properties vary across its phase diagram and how, at a microscopic level, the collective properties of this liquid emerge from the interactions among the individual quarks and gluons that must be visible if the liquid is probed with sufficiently high resolution. This white paper, prepared by the Hot QCD Writing Group as part of the U.S. Long Range Plan for Nuclear Physics, reviews the recent progress in the field of hot QCD and outlines the scientific opportunities in the next decade for resolving the outstanding issues in the field.

Quantum phase transitions and string orders in the spin-1/2 Heisenberg-Ising alternating chain with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

Quantum phase transitions (QPTs) and the ground-state phase diagram of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg-Ising alternating chain (HIAC) with uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction are investigated by a matrix-product-state (MPS) method. By calculating the odd- and even-string order parameters, we recognize two kinds of Haldane phases, i.e., the odd- and even-Haldane phases. Furthermore, doubly degenerate entanglement spectra on odd and even bonds are observed in odd- and even-Haldane phases, respectively. A rich phase diagram including four different phases, i.e., an antiferromagnetic (AF), AF stripe, odd- and even-Haldane phases, is obtained. These phases are found to be separated by continuous QPTs: the topological QPT between the odd- and even-Haldane phases is verified to be continuous and corresponds to conformal field theory with central charge $c$=1; while the rest phase transitions in the phase diagram are found to be $c$=1/2. We also revisit, with our MPS method, the exactly solvable case of HIAC model with DM interactions only on odd bonds, and find that the even-Haldane phase disappears, but the other three phases, i.e., the AF, AF stripe, and odd-Haldane phases, still remain in the phase diagram. We exhibit the evolution of the even-Haldane phase by tuning the DM interactions on the even bonds gradually.

Magnetic ground state of superconducting Eu(Fe0.88Ir0.12)2As2: A combined neutron diffraction and first-principles calculation study

The magnetic order of the localized Eu$^{2+}$ spins in optimally-doped Eu(Fe$_{1-x}$Ir$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ ($\mathit{x}$ = 0.12) with superconducting transition temperature $\mathit{T_{SC}}$ = 22 K was investigated by single-crystal neutron diffraction. The Eu$^{2+}$ moments were found to be ferromagnetically aligned along the $\mathit{c}$-direction with an ordered moment of 7.0(1) $μ_{B}$ well below the magnetic phase transition temperature $\mathit{T_{C}}$ = 17 K. No evidence of the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural phase transition was found in this compound within the experimental uncertainty, in which the spin-density-wave (SDW) order of the Fe sublattice is supposed to be completely suppressed and the superconductivity gets fully developed. The ferromagnetic groud state of the Eu$^{2+}$ spins in Eu(Fe$_{0.88}$Ir$_{0.12}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ was supported by the first-principles density functional calculation. In addition, comparison of the electronic structure calculations between Eu(Fe$_{0.875}$Ir$_{0.125}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ and the parent compound EuFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ indicates stronger hybridization and more expanded bandwith due to the Ir substitution, which together with the introduction of electrons might work against the Fe-SDW in favor of the superconductivity.

Large-angle quasi-self-collimation effect in a rod-type photonic crystal

A rod-type photonic crystal (PC) with a rectangular lattice shows a large-angle quasi-self-collimation (quasi-SC) effect by changing the symmetry of its rectangular lattice to straighten one of the isofrequency contours. To investigate the straightness of the isofrequency contour as well as the quasi-SC effect, we propose a straightness factor L based on the method of least squares. With L smaller than L0 (L0 = 0.01 is the critical value), the isofrequency contour is sufficiently straight to induce quasi-SC effect with the beam quasi-collimating in the structure. Furthermore, the efficiency of light coupling to the quasi-SC PC is studied, and can be greatly improved by applying a carefully designed antireflection layer.

Identification of Degeneracy and Criticality of Two-Dimensional Statistical and Quantum Systems by the Boundary States of Tensor Networks

We propose a systematic scheme to reach the properties of two-dimensional (2D) statistical and quantum systems by studying the effective (1+1)-dimensional theory that is constructed from the tensor network representation. On on hand, we discover that the degeneracy of the 2D system can be determined by the purity of the boundary thermal state, which is the density operator of the effective theory at zero (effective) temperature. On the other hand, we find that the gapped (or critical) 2D system leads to a gapped (or critical) effective (1+1)-dimensional theory whose criticality can be accessed by the entanglement entropy $S$ of its ground state dubbed as boundary pure state. We also uncover that for the critical systems, $S$ obeys the same logarithmic law as that found in the critical 1D quantum chains, which reads $S = (κc/6)\log_2 D + const.$, with $c$ the central charge and $κ$ a constant related to the scaling property of the correlation length $ξ$ as $ξ\sim D^κ$. Such a scaling law presents an efficient way to characterize the critical universality class of the original 2D systems. An important implication of our work is that many well-established theories for 1D quantum chains become available for studying 2D systems with the help of the proposed lower dimensional correspondence.

Detection of a superconducting phase in a two-atom layer of hexagonal Ga film grown on semiconducting GaN(0001)

The recent observation of superconducting state at atomic scale has motivated the pursuit of exotic condensed phases in two-dimensional (2D) systems. Here we report on a superconducting phase in two-monolayer crystalline Ga films epitaxially grown on wide band-gap semiconductor GaN(0001). This phase exhibits a hexagonal structure and only 0.552 nm in thickness, nevertheless, brings about a superconducting transition temperature Tc as high as 5.4 K, confirmed by in situ scanning tunneling spectroscopy, and ex situ electrical magneto-transport and magnetization measurements. The anisotropy of critical magnetic field and Berezinski-Kosterlitz-Thouless-like transition are observed, typical for the 2D superconductivity. Our results demonstrate a novel platform for exploring atomic-scale 2D superconductor, with great potential for understanding of the interface superconductivity.

Computation of Differential Chow Forms for Prime Differential Ideals

In this paper, we propose algorithms to compute differential Chow forms for prime differential ideals which are given by their characteristic sets. The main algorithm is based on an optimal bound for the order of a prime differential ideal in terms of its characteristic set under an arbitrary ranking, which shows the Jacobi bound conjecture holds in this case. Apart from the order bound, we also give a degree bound for the differential Chow form. In addition, for prime differential ideals given by their characteristic sets under an orderly ranking, a much more simpler algorithm is given to compute its differential Chow form. The computational complexity of both is single exponential in terms of the Jacobi number, the maximal degree of the differential polynomials in the characteristic set and the number of variables.

Well-balanced and flexible morphological modeling of swash hydrodynamics and sediment transport

Existing numerical models of the swash zone are relatively inflexible in dealing with sediment transport due to a high dependence of the deployed numerical schemes on empirical sediment transport relations. Moreover, these models are usually not well-balanced, meaning they are unable to correctly simulate quiescent flow. Here a well-balanced and flexible morphological model for the swash zone is presented. The nonlinear shallow water equations and the Exner equation are discretized by the shock-capturing finite volume method, in which the numerical flux and the bed slope source term are estimated by a well-balanced version of the SLIC (Slope LImited Centered) scheme that does not depend on empirical sediment transport relations. The satisfaction of the well-balanced property is demonstrated through simulating quiescent coastal flow. The quantitative accuracy of the model in reproducing key parameters (i.e., the notional shoreline position, the swash depth, the flow velocity, the overtopping flow volume, the beach change depth and the sediment transport rate) is shown to be satisfactory through comparisons against analytical solutions, experimental data as well as previous numerical solutions. This work facilitates an improved modeling framework for the swash hydrodynamics and sediment transport.

Synthesis, Structural, and Transport Properties of Cr-doped BaTi_2As_2O

The interplay between unconventional superconductivity and the ordering of charge/spin density wave is one of the most vital issues in both condensed matter physics and material science. The Ti-based compound BaTi_2As_2O, which can be seen as the parent phase of superconducting BaTi_2Sb_2O, has a layered structure with a space group P4/mmm, similar to that of cuprate and iron-based superconductors. This material exhibits a charge density wave (CDW) ordering transition revealed by an anomaly at around 200 K in transport measurements. Here, we report the synthesis and systematical study of the physical properties in Cr-doped BaTi_{2-x}Cr_xAs_2O (x = 0 - 0.154), and demonstrate that the transition temperature of the CDW ordering is suppressed gradually by the doped Cr element. The magnetization measurements confirm the evolution of the CDW ordering transition. These observed behaviors are similar to that observed in iron-based superconductors, but no superconductivity emerges down to 2 K. In addition, the first-principles calculations are also carried out for well-understanding the nature of experimental observations.
