Controlling spontaneous emission of a two-level atom by hyperbolic metamaterials

Within the frame of quantum optics we analyze the properties of spontaneous emission of two-level atom in media with indefinite permittivity tensor where the geometry of the dispersion relation is characterized by an ellipsoid or a hyperboloid(hyperbolic medium). The decay rate is explicitly given with the orientation of the dipole transition matrix element taken into account. It indicates that for the ellipsoid case the intensity of the photons coupled into different modes can be tuned by changing the direction of the matrix element and for the hyperboloid case it is found that spontaneous emission in hyperbolic medium can be dramatically enhanced compared to the dielectric background. Moreover, spontaneous emission exhibit the strong directivity and get the maximum in the asymptote direction.

Electronic and Magnetic Structures of Chain Structured Iron Selenide Compounds

Electronic and magnetic structures of iron selenide compounds Ce2O2FeSe2 (2212\ast) and BaFe2Se3(123\ast) are studied by the first-principles calculations. We find that while all these compounds are composed of one-dimensional (1D) Fe chain (or ladder) structures, their electronic structures are not close to be quasi-1D. The magnetic exchange couplings between two nearest-neighbor (NN) chains in 2212\ast and between two NN two-leg-ladders in 123\ast are both antiferromagnetic (AFM), which is consistent with the presence of significant third NN AFM coupling, a common feature shared in other iron-chalcogenides, FeTe (11\ast) and KyFe2-xSe2 (122\ast). In magnetic ground states, each Fe chain of 2212\ast is ferromagnetic and each two-leg ladder of 123\ast form a block-AFM structure. We suggest that all magnetic structures in iron-selenide compounds can be unified into an extended J1-J2-J3 model. Spin-wave excitations of the model are calculated and can be tested by future experiments on these two systems.

Absence of Wigner molecules in one-dimensional few-fermion systems with short-range interactions

We study by means of exact-diagonalization techniques the ground state of a few-fermion system with strong short-range repulsive interactions trapped by a harmonic potential in one spatial dimension. Even when the ground-state density profile displays at strong coupling very well pronounced Friedel oscillations with a `4k_F periodicity', the pair correlation function does not show any signature of Wigner-molecule-type correlations. For the sake of comparison, we present also numerical results for few-electron systems with Coulomb interactions, demonstrating that their ground state at strong coupling is, on the contrary, a Wigner molecule.

Confined one-way mode at magnetic domain wall for broadband high-efficiency one-way waveguide, splitter and bender

We find the one-way mode can be well-confined at the magnetic domain wall by the photonic bandgap of gyromagnetic bulk material. Utilizing the well-confined one-way mode at the domain wall, we demonstrate the photonic one-way waveguide, splitter and bender can be realized with simple structures, which are predicted to be high-efficiency, broadband, frequency-independent, reflection-free, crosstalk-proof and robustness against disorder. Additionally, we find that the splitter and bender in our proposal can be transformed into each other with magnetic control, which may have great potential applications in all photonic integrated circuit.

Interface induced high temperature superconductivity in single unit-cell FeSe films on SrTiO3

Searching for superconducting materials with high transition temperature (TC) is one of the most exciting and challenging fields in physics and materials science. Although superconductivity has been discovered for more than 100 years, the copper oxides are so far the only materials with TC above 77 K, the liquid nitrogen boiling point. Here we report an interface engineering method for dramatically raising the TC of superconducting films. We find that one unit-cell (UC) thick films of FeSe grown on SrTiO3 (STO) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) show signatures of superconducting transition above 50 K by transport measurement. A superconducting gap as large as 20 meV of the 1 UC films observed by scanning tunneling microcopy (STM) suggests that the superconductivity could occur above 77 K. The occurrence of superconductivity is further supported by the presence of superconducting vortices under magnetic field. Our work not only demonstrates a powerful way for finding new superconductors and for raising TC, but also provides a well-defined platform for systematic study of the mechanism of unconventional superconductivity by using different superconducting materials and substrates.

Edge States of Monolayer and Bilayer Graphene Nanoribbons

On the basis of tight-binding lattice model, the edge states of monolayer and bilayer graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with different edge terminations are studied. The effects of edge-hopping modulation, spin-orbital coupling (SOC), and bias voltage on bilayer GNRs are discussed. We observe the following: (i) Some new extra edge states can be created by edge-hopping modulation for monolayer GNRs. (ii) Intralayer Rashba SOC plays a role in depressing the band energy gap $E_g$ opened by intrinsic SOC for both monolayer and bilayer GNRs. An almost linear dependent relation, i.e., $E_g\sim λ_R$, is found. (iii) Although the bias voltage favors a bulk energy gap for bilayer graphene without intrinsic SOC, it tends to reduce the gap induced by intrinsic SOC. (iv) The topological phase of the quantum spin Hall effect can be destroyed completely by interlayer Rashba SOC for bilayer GNRs.

Encapsulation by Janus spheroids

The micro/nano encapsulation technology has acquired considerable attention in the fields of drug delivery, biomaterial engineering, and materials science. Based on recent advances in chemical particle synthesis, we propose a primitive model of an encapsulation system produced by the self-assembly of Janus oblate spheroids, particles with oblate spheroidal bodies and two hemi-surfaces coded with dissimilar chemical properties. Using Monte Carlo simulation, we investigate the encapsulation system with spherical particles as encapsulated guests, for different densities. We study the anisotropic effect due to the encapsulating agent's geometric shape and chemical composition on the encapsulation morphology and efficiency. Given the relatively high encapsulation efficiency we find from the simulations, we believe that this method of encapsulation has potential practical value.

Modified Tucker Decomposition for Tensor Network and Fast Linearized Tensor Renormalization Group Algorithm for Two-Dimensional Quantum Spin Lattice Systems

We propose a novel algorithm with a modified Tucker decomposition for tensor network that allows for efficiently and precisely calculating the ground state and thermodynamic properties of two-dimensional (2D) quantum spin lattice systems, and is coined as the fast linearized tensor renormalization group (fLTRG). Its amazing efficiency and precision are examined by studying the spin-1/2 anisotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a honeycomb lattice, and the results are found to be fairly in agreement with the quantum Monte Carlo calculations. It is also successfully applied to tackle a quasi-2D spin-1/2 frustrated bilayer honeycomb Heisenberg model, where a quantum phase transition from an ordered antiferromagnetic state to a gapless quantum spin liquid phase is found. The thermodynamic behaviors of this frustrated spin system are also explored. The present fLTRG algorithm could be readily extended to other quantum lattice systems.

Universal scaling in sports ranking

Ranking is a ubiquitous phenomenon in the human society. By clicking the web pages of Forbes, you may find all kinds of rankings, such as world's most powerful people, world's richest people, top-paid tennis stars, and so on and so forth. Herewith, we study a specific kind, sports ranking systems in which players' scores and prize money are calculated based on their performances in attending various tournaments. A typical example is tennis. It is found that the distributions of both scores and prize money follow universal power laws, with exponents nearly identical for most sports fields. In order to understand the origin of this universal scaling we focus on the tennis ranking systems. By checking the data we find that, for any pair of players, the probability that the higher-ranked player will top the lower-ranked opponent is proportional to the rank difference between the pair. Such a dependence can be well fitted to a sigmoidal function. By using this feature, we propose a simple toy model which can simulate the competition of players in different tournaments. The simulations yield results consistent with the empirical findings. Extensive studies indicate the model is robust with respect to the modifications of the minor parts.

Note on two results on the rainbow connection number of graphs

An edge-colored graph $G$, where adjacent edges may be colored the same, is rainbow connected if any two vertices of $G$ are connected by a path whose edges have distinct colors. The rainbow connection number $rc(G)$ of a connected graph $G$ is the smallest number of colors that are needed in order to make $G$ rainbow connected. Caro et al. showed an upper bound $rc(G)\leq n-δ$ for a connected graph $G$ of order $n$ with minimum degree $δ$ in "On rainbow connection, Electron. J. Combin. 15(2008), R57". Recently, Shiermeyer gave it a generalization that $rc(G)\leq n- \frac{σ_2} 2$ in "Bounds for the rainbow connection number of graphs, Discuss. Math Graph Theory 31(2011), 387--395", where $σ_2$ is the minimum degree-sum. The proofs of both results are almost the same, both fix the minimum degree $δ$ and then use induction on $n$. This short note points out that this proof technique does not work rigorously. Fortunately, Caro et al's result is still true but under our improved proof. However, we do not know if Shiermeyer's result still hold.

The methods to detect vacuum polarization by evanescent modes

We propose the evanescent-mode-sensing methods to probe the electrodynamics (QED) vacuum polarization. From our methods, high-sensitivity can be achieved even though the external field is much smaller than the Schwinger critical field and may be realizable in contemporary experimental conditions. The methods are based on the effect of phase change and time delay of evanescent wave which is transmitted in QED vacuum. These methods can also be widely used in sensitive probing of tiny dissipation in other fields.

Green's function for metamaterial superlens: Evanescent wave in the image

We develop a new method to calculate the evanescent wave, the subdivided evanescent waves (SEWs), and the radiative wave, which can be obtained by separating the global field of the image of metamaterial superlens. The method is based on Green's function, and it can be applied in other linear systems. This study could help us to investigate the effect of evanescent wave on metamaterial superlens directly, and give us a new way to design new devices.

Block Antiferromagnetism and Checkerboard Charge Ordering in Alkali-doped Iron Selenides $R$$_{1-x}$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$

By performing first-principles electronic structure calculations and analyzing effective magnetic model of alkali-doped iron selenides, we show that the materials without iron vacancies should approach a novel checkerboard phase in which each four Fe sites group together in tetragonal structure. The checkerboard phase is the ground state with a block antiferromagnetic (AFM) order and a small charge density wave order in the absence of superconductivity. Both of them can also coexist with superconductivity. The results explain mysterious $2\times 2$ ordered patterns and hidden orders observed in various different experiments, clarify the missing link between AFM and superconducting phases, suggest that the block-AFM state is the parent state, and unify the understanding of various observed phases in alkali-doped iron selenides.

Self Assembly of Janus Ellipsoids

We propose a primitive model of Janus ellipsoids that represent particles with an ellipsoidal core and two semi-surfaces coded with dissimilar properties, for example, hydrophobicity and hydrophilicity, respectively. We investigate the effects of the aspect ratio on the self-assembly morphology and dynamical aggregation processes using Monte Carlo simulations. We also discuss certain differences between our results and those of earlier results for Janus spheres. In particular, we find that the size and structure of the aggregate can be controlled by the aspect ratio.

Intersection Theory in Differential Algebraic Geometry: Generic Intersections and the Differential Chow Form

In this paper, an intersection theory for generic differential polynomials is presented. The intersection of an irreducible differential variety of dimension $d$ and order $h$ with a generic differential hypersurface of order $s$ is shown to be an irreducible variety of dimension $d-1$ and order $h+s$. As a consequence, the dimension conjecture for generic differential polynomials is proved. Based on the intersection theory, the Chow form for an irreducible differential variety is defined and most of the properties of the Chow form in the algebraic case are established for its differential counterpart. Furthermore, the generalized differential Chow form is defined and its properties are proved. As an application of the generalized differential Chow form, the differential resultant of $n+1$ generic differential polynomials in $n$ variables is defined and properties similar to that of the Macaulay resultant for multivariate polynomials are proved.

Phase Separation and Magnetic Order in K-doped Iron Selenide Superconductor

Alkali-doped iron selenide is the latest member of high Tc superconductor family, and its peculiar characters have immediately attracted extensive attention. We prepared high-quality potassium-doped iron selenide (KxFe2-ySe2) thin films by molecular beam epitaxy and unambiguously demonstrated the existence of phase separation, which is currently under debate, in this material using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. The stoichiometric superconducting phase KFe2Se2 contains no iron vacancies, while the insulating phase has a \surd5\times\surd5 vacancy order. The iron vacancies are shown always destructive to superconductivity in KFe2Se2. Our study on the subgap bound states induced by the iron vacancies further reveals a magnetically-related bipartite order in the superconducting phase. These findings not only solve the existing controversies in the atomic and electronic structures in KxFe2-ySe2, but also provide valuable information on understanding the superconductivity and its interplay with magnetism in iron-based superconductors.

Size Effects on Transport Properties in Topological Anderson Insulators

We study the size effects on the transport properties in topological Anderson insulators by means of the Landauer-Büttiker formalism combined with the nonequilibrium Green function method. Conductances calculated for serval different widths of the nanoribbons reveal that there is no longer quantized plateaus for narrow nanoribbons. The local spin-resolved current distribution demonstrates that the edge states on the two sides can be coupled, leading to enhancement of backscattering as the width of the nanoribbon decreases, thus destroying the perfect quantization phenomena in the topological Anderson insulator. We also show that the main contribution to the nonquantized conductance also comes from edge states. Experiment proposals on topological Anderson insulator are discussed finally.

Differential Chow Form for Projective Differential Variety

In this paper, a generic intersection theorem in projective differential algebraic geometry is presented. Precisely, the intersection of an irreducible projective differential variety of dimension d>0 and order h with a generic projective differential hyperplane is shown to be an irreducible projective differential variety of dimension d-1 and order h. Based on the generic intersection theorem, the Chow form for an irreducible projective differential variety is defined and most of the properties of the differential Chow form in affine differential case are established for its projective differential counterpart. Finally, we apply the differential Chow form to a result of linear dependence over projective varieties given by Kolchin.
