Highly reproducible metal/graphene contacts and stable electrical performance by UV-Ozone treatment

Resist residue from the device fabrication process is a general and significant source of the metal/graphene contact interface contamination. In this paper, Ultraviolet-Ozone (UVO) treatment is proven to be an effective way of cleaning the metal/graphene interface. Electrical measurements of devices, which were fabricated by using UVO treatment of the metal/graphene contact region, show that stable and highly reproducible low contact resistance between metal and graphene is obtained without affecting the electrical properties of the graphene channel itself.

Millimeter-scale and large-angle self-collimation in a photonic crystal composed of silicon nanorods

We report the observation of a large-angle self-collimation phenomenon occurring in photonic crystals composed of nanorods. Electromagnetic waves incident onto such photonic crystals from directions covering a wide-range of incident angles become highly localized along a single array of rods, which results in narrow-beam propagation without divergence. A propagation length of 0.4 mm is experimentally observed over the wavelength range of 1540 nm to 1570 nm, even in the large incident angle case, which is a very considerable length scale for on-chip optical interconnection.

On the Construction of Radio Environment Maps for Cognitive Radio Networks

The Radio Environment Map (REM) provides an effective approach to Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) in Cognitive Radio Networks (CRNs). Previous results on REM construction show that there exists a tradeoff between the number of measurements (sensors) and REM accuracy. In this paper, we analyze this tradeoff and determine that the REM error is a decreasing and convex function of the number of measurements (sensors). The concept of geographic entropy is introduced to quantify this relationship. And the influence of sensor deployment on REM accuracy is examined using information theory techniques. The results obtained in this paper are applicable not only for the REM, but also for wireless sensor network deployment.

Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition and reentrance in an anisotropic 3-state Potts model on the generalized Kagome lattice

The unusual reentrant phenomenon is observed in the anisotropic 3-state Potts model on a gen- eralized Kagome lattice. By employing the linearized tensor renormalization group method, we find that the reentrance can appear in the region not only under a partial ordered phase as commonly known but also a phase without a local order parameter, which is uncovered to fall into the uni- versality of the Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) type. The region of the reentrance depends strongly on the ratios of the next nearest couplings α = J2 /|J1 | and β = J3 /|J1 |. The phase diagrams in the plane of temperature versus β for different α are obtained. Through massive calculations, it is also revealed that the quasi-entanglement entropy can be used to accurately detect the KT transition temperature.

UV/Ozone treatment to reduce metal-graphene contact resistance

We report reduced contact resistance of single-layer graphene devices by using ultraviolet ozone (UVO) treatment to modify the metal/graphene contact interface. The devices were fabricated from mechanically transferred, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) grown, single layer graphene. UVO treatment of graphene in the contact regions as defined by photolithography and prior to metal deposition was found to reduce interface contamination originating from incomplete removal of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and photoresist. Our control experiment shows that exposure times up to 10 minutes did not introduce significant disorder in the graphene as characterized by Raman spectroscopy. By using the described approach, contact resistance of less than 200 Ω μm was achieved, while not significantly altering the electrical properties of the graphene channel region of devices.

Efficient simulation of infinite tree tensor network states on the Bethe lattice

We show that the simple update approach proposed by Jiang et. al. [H.C. Jiang, Z.Y. Weng, and T. Xiang, Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 090603 (2008)] is an efficient and accurate method for determining the infinite tree tensor network states on the Bethe lattice. Ground state properties of the quantum transverse Ising model and the Heisenberg XXZ model on the Bethe lattice are studied. The transverse Ising model is found to undergo a second-order quantum phase transition with a diverging magnetic susceptibility but a finite correlation length which is upper-bounded by 1/ln(q-1) even at the transition point (q is the coordinate number of the Bethe lattice). An intuitive explanation on this peculiar "critical" phenomenon is given. The XXZ model on the Bethe lattice undergoes a first-order quantum phase transition at the isotropic point. Furthermore, the simple update scheme is found to be related with the Bethe approximation. Finally, by applying the simple update to various tree tensor clusters, we can obtain rather nice and scalable approximations for two-dimensional lattices.

Ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopic signatures of superconducting and pseudogap phases in YBa2Cu3O7-δ films

Femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy is applied to identify transient optical signatures of phase transitions in optimally doped YBa2Cu3O7-δ films. To elucidate the dynamics of superconducting and pseudogap phases, the slow thermal component is removed from the time-domain traces of photo-induced reflectivity in a high-flux regime with low frequency pulse rate. The rescaled data exhibit distinct signatures of the phase separation with abrupt changes at the onsets of TSC and TPG in excellent agreement with transport data. Compared to the superconducting phase, the response of the pseudogap phase is characterized by the strongly reduced reflectivity change accompanied by a faster recovery time.

Superconductivity in a single layer alkali-doped FeSe: a weakly coupled two-leg ladder system

We prepare single layer potassium-doped iron selenide (110) film by molecular beam expitaxy. Such a single layer film can be viewed as a two-dimensional system composed of weakly coupled two-leg iron ladders. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy reveals that superconductivity is developed in this two-leg ladder system. The superconducting gap is similar to that of the multi-layer films. However, the Fermi surface topology given by first-principles calculation is remarkably different from that of the bulk materials. Our results suggest that superconducting pairing is very short-ranged or takes place rather locally in iron-chalcogenides. The superconductivity is most likely driven by electron-electron correlation effect and is insensitive to the change of Fermi surfaces.

Pairing Symmetry in Iron-Pnictide Superconductor KFe$_2$As$_2$

The pairing symmetry is one of the major issues in the study of iron-based superconductors. We adopt a low-energy effective kinetic model based on the first-principles band structure calculations combined with the $J_1$-$J_2$ model for KFe$_2$As$_2$, the phase diagram of pairing symmetries is constructed. Putting the values of $J_1$ and $J_2$ of the $J_1$-$J_2$ model obtained by the first-principles calculations into this phase diagram, we find that the pairing symmetry for KFe$_2$As$_2$ is a nodal $d_{xy}$-wave in the folded Brillouin zone with two iron atoms per unit cell. This is in good agreement with experiments observed a nodal order parameter.

Optimized Decimation of Tensor Networks with Super-orthogonalization for Two-Dimensional Quantum Lattice Models

A novel algorithm based on the optimized decimation of tensor networks with super-orthogonalization (ODTNS) that can be applied to simulate efficiently and accurately not only the thermodynamic but also the ground state properties of two-dimensional (2D) quantum lattice models is proposed. By transforming the 2D quantum model into a three-dimensional (3D) closed tensor network (TN) comprised of the tensor product density operator and a 3D brick-wall TN, the free energy of the system can be calculated with the imaginary time evolution, in which the network Tucker decomposition is suggested for the first time to obtain the optimal lower-dimensional approximation on the bond space by transforming the TN into a super-orthogonal form. The efficiency and accuracy of this algorithm are testified, which are fairly comparable with the quantum Monte Carlo calculations. Besides, the present ODTNS scheme can also be applicable to the 2D frustrated quantum spin models with nice efficiency.

Nonparametric Bayes Pachinko Allocation

Recent advances in topic models have explored complicated structured distributions to represent topic correlation. For example, the pachinko allocation model (PAM) captures arbitrary, nested, and possibly sparse correlations between topics using a directed acyclic graph (DAG). While PAM provides more flexibility and greater expressive power than previous models like latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA), it is also more difficult to determine the appropriate topic structure for a specific dataset. In this paper, we propose a nonparametric Bayesian prior for PAM based on a variant of the hierarchical Dirichlet process (HDP). Although the HDP can capture topic correlations defined by nested data structure, it does not automatically discover such correlations from unstructured data. By assuming an HDP-based prior for PAM, we are able to learn both the number of topics and how the topics are correlated. We evaluate our model on synthetic and real-world text datasets, and show that nonparametric PAM achieves performance matching the best of PAM without manually tuning the number of topics.

Sparse Differential Resultant for Laurent Differential Polynomials

In this paper, we first introduce the concept of Laurent differentially essential systems and give a criterion for Laurent differentially essential systems in terms of their supports. Then the sparse differential resultant for a Laurent differentially essential system is defined and its basic properties are proved. In particular, order and degree bounds for the sparse differential resultant are given. Based on these bounds, an algorithm to compute the sparse differential resultant is proposed, which is single exponential in terms of the number of indeterminates, the Jacobi number of the system, and the size of the system.

Matrix Product State and Quantum Phase Transitions in the One-Dimensional Extended Quantum Compass Model

The matrix product state (MPS) is utilized to study the ground state properties and quantum phase transitions (QPTs) of the one-dimensional quantum compass model (QCM). The MPS wavefunctions are argued to be very efficient descriptions of QCM ground states, and are numerically determined by imaginary time projections. The ground state energy, correlations, quantum entanglement and its spectrum, local and nonlocal order parameters, etc., are calculated and studied in details. It is revealed that the bipartite and block entanglement entropies, as well as the nearest neighbor correlation functions can be used to detect the second-order QPTs, but not the first-order ones, while fidelity detections can recognize both. The entanglement spectrum is extracted from the MPS wavefunction, and found to be doubly degenerate in disordered phases of QCM, where non-local string order parameters exist. Moreover, with linearized tensor renormalization group method, the specific heat curves are evaluated and their low temperature behaviors are investigated.

Cascading Failures in Interdependent Lattice Networks: The Critical Role of the Length of Dependency Links

We study the cascading failures in a system composed of two interdependent square lattice networks A and B placed on the same Cartesian plane, where each node in network A depends on a node in network B randomly chosen within a certain distance $r$ from the corresponding node in network A and vice versa. Our results suggest that percolation for small $r$ below $r_{\rm max}\approx 8$ (lattice units) is a second-order transition, and for larger $r$ is a first-order transition. For $r<r_{\rm max}$, the critical threshold increases linearly with $r$ from 0.593 at $r=0$ and reaches a maximum, 0.738 for $r=r_{\rm max}$ and then gradually decreases to 0.683 for $r=\infty$. Our analytical considerations are in good agreement with simulations. Our study suggests that interdependent infrastructures embedded in Euclidean space become most vulnerable when the distance between interdependent nodes is in the intermediate range, which is much smaller than the size of the system.

Phase Diagrams, Distinct Conformal Anomalies and Thermodynamics of Spin-1 Bond-Alternating Heisenberg Antiferromagnetic Chain in Magnetic Fields

The ground state phase diagrams and thermodynamic properties of a spin-1 bond-alternating Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain with a single-ion anisotropy in longitudinal and transverse magnetic fields are investigated jointly by means of the infinite time evolving block decimation, the linearized tensor renormalization group and the density matrix renormalization group methods. It is found that in the magnetic field-bond alternating ratio plane six phases such as singlet dimer, Haldane, two Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid, 1/2 magnetization plateau and spin polarized phases are identified in a longitudinal field, while in a transverse field there are fives phases including singlet dimer, Haldane, Z$_2$ symmetry breaking, quasi-1/2 magnetization plateau and quasi spin polarized phases. A reentrant behavior of the staggered magnetization in a transverse field is observed. The quantum critical behaviors in longitudinal and transverse magnetic fields are disclosed to fall into different universality classes with corresponding conformal field central charge $c=1$ and 1/2, respectively. The experimental data of the compound NTENP under both longitudinal and transverse magnetic fields are nicely fitted, and the Luttinger liquid behavior of low temperature specific heat experimentally observed is also confirmed.

KFe_2Se_2 is the parent compound of K-doped iron selenide superconductors

We elucidate the existing controversies in the newly discovered K-doped iron selenide (KxFe2-ySe2-z) superconductors. The stoichiometric KFe2Se2 with \surd2\times\surd2 charge ordering was identified as the parent compound of KxFe2-ySe2-z superconductor using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. The superconductivity is induced in KFe2Se2 by either Se vacancies or interacting with the anti-ferromagnetic K2Fe4Se5 compound. Totally four phases were found to exist in KxFe2-ySe2-z: parent compound KFe2Se2, superconducting KFe2Se2 with \surd2\times\surd5 charge ordering, superconducting KFe2Se2-z with Se vacancies and insulating K2Fe4Se5 with \surd5\times\surd5 Fe vacancy order. The phase separation takes place at the mesoscopic scale under standard molecular beam epitaxy condition.

Switchable Hyperbolic Metamaterials With Magnetic Control

A switchable hyperbolic material (SHM) is investigated, with which one can turn on or off the hyperbolic dispersion of the material via magnetic control. The SHM has simple structure, with a one-dimensional periodic stacking of dielectric layer and gyromagnetic layer. The hyperbolic dispersion of SHM is due to the negative effective permeability of gyromagnetic layers, and it can be transformed into a regular circular dispersion when the d.c. magnetic field is switched off. This switchable dispersion transition is reversible, which may have great potential applications in many fields.
