The Bloch-Okounkov correlation functions of negative levels

Bloch and Okounkov introduced an $n$-point correlation function on the fermionic Fock space and found a closed formula in terms of theta functions. This function affords several distinguished interpretations and in particular can be formulated as correlation functions on irreducible $\hat{gl}_\infty$-modules of level one. These correlation functions have been generalized for irreducible integrable modules of $\hat{gl}_\infty$ and its classical Lie subalgebras of positive levels by the authors. In this paper we extend further these results and compute the correlation functions as well as the $q$-dimensions for modules of $\hat{gl}_\infty$ and its classical subalgebras at negative levels.

The Bloch-Okounkov correlation functions of classical type

Bloch and Okounkov introduced an n-point correlation function on the infinite wedge space and found an elegant closed formula in terms of theta functions. This function has connections to Gromov-Witten theory, Hilbert schemes, symmetric groups, etc, and it can also be interpreted as correlation functions on integrable gl_\infty-modules of level one. Such gl_\infty-correlation functions at higher levels were then calculated by Cheng and Wang. In this paper, generalizing the type A results, we formulate and determine the n-point correlation functions in the sense of Bloch-Okounkov on integrable modules over classical Lie subalgebras of gl_\infty of type B,C,D at arbitrary levels. As byproducts, we obtain new q-dimension formulas for integrable modules of type B,C,D and some fermionic type q-identities.

Spin Hecke algebras of finite and affine types

We introduce the spin Hecke algebra, which is a q-deformation of the spin symmetric group algebra, and its affine generalization. We establish an algebra isomorphism which relates our spin (affine) Hecke algebras to the (affine) Hecke-Clifford algebras of Olshanski and Jones-Nazarov. Relation between the spin (affine) Hecke algebra and a nonstandard presentation of the usual (affine) Hecke algebra is displayed, and the notion of covering (affine) Hecke algebra is introduced to provide a link between these algebras. Various algebraic structures for the spin (affine) Hecke algebra are established.

Super duality and Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials

We establish a direct connection between the representation theories of Lie algebras and Lie superalgebras (of type A) via Fock space reformulations of their Kazhdan-Lusztig theories. As a consequence, the characters of finite-dimensional irreducible modules of the general linear Lie superalgebra are computed by the usual parabolic Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of type A. In addition, we establish closed formulas for canonical and dual canonical bases for the tensor product of any two fundamental representations of type A.

Hilbert schemes of points on the minimal resolution and soliton equations

The equivariant and ordinary cohomology rings of Hilbert schemes of points on the minimal resolution C^2//G for cyclic G are studied using vertex operator technique, and connections between these rings and the class algebras of wreath products are explicitly established. We further show that certain generating functions of equivariant intersection numbers on the Hilbert schemes and related moduli spaces of sheaves on C^2//G are tau functions of 2-Toda hierarchies.

A Fock space approach to representation theory of osp(2|2n)

A Fock space is introduced that admits an action of a quantum group of type A supplemented with some extra operators. The canonical and dual canonical basis of the Fock space are computed and then used to derive the finite-dimenisonal tilting and irreducible characters for the Lie superalgebra osp(2|2n). We also determine all the composition factors of the symmetric tensors of the natural osp(2|2n)-module.

The correlation functions of vertex operators and Macdonald polynomials

The n-point correlation functions introduced by Bloch and Okounkov have already found several geometric connections and algebraic generalizations. In this Note we formulate a q,t-deformation of this n-point function. The key operator used in our formulation arises from the theory of Macdonald polynomials and affords a vertex operator interpretation. We obtain closed formulas for the n-point functions when n =1,2 in terms of the basic hypergeometric functions. We further generalize the q,t-deformed n-point function to more general vertex operators.

Integral operators and integral cohomology classes of Hilbert schemes

The methods of integral operators on the cohomology of Hilbert schemes of points on surfaces are developed. They are used to establish integral bases for the cohomology groups of Hilbert schemes of points on a class of surfaces (and conjecturally, for all simply connected surfaces).

Ideals of the cohomology rings of Hilbert schemes and their applications

We study the ideals of the rational cohomology ring of the Hilbert scheme X^{[n]} of n points on a smooth projective surface X. As an application, for a large class of smooth quasi-projective surfaces X, we show that every cup product structure constant of H^*(X^{[n]}) is independent of n; moreover, we obtain two sets of ring generators for the cohomology ring H^*(X^{[n]}). Similar results are established for the Chen-Ruan orbifold cohomology ring of the symmetric product. In particular, we prove a ring isomorphism between H^*(X^{[n]}, C) and H^*_{orb}(X^{[n]}/S_n, C) for a large class of smooth quasi-projective surfaces with numerically trivial canonical class.

The Farahat-Higman ring of wreath products and Hilbert schemes

We study the structure constants of the class algebra $R_Z(G_n)$ of the wreath products $G_n$ associated to an arbitrary finite group G with respect to the basis of conjugacy classes. We show that a suitable filtration on $R_Z(G_n)$ gives rise to the graded ring $\mathcal G_G(n)$ with non-negative integer structure constants independent of n (some of which are computed), which are then encoded in a Farahat-Higman ring $\mathcal G_G$. The real conjugacy classes of G come to play a distinguished role, and is treated in detail in the case when G is a subgroup of $SL_2(C)$. The above results provide new insight to the cohomology rings of Hilbert schemes of points on a quasi-projective surface.

Correlation functions of strict partitions and twisted Fock spaces

Using twisted Fock spaces, we formulate and study two twisted versions of the n-point correlation functions of Bloch-Okounkov, and then identify them with q-expectation values of certain functions on the set of (odd) strict partitions. We find closed formulas for the 1-point functions in both cases in terms of Jacobi theta functions. These correlation functions afford several distinct interpretations.

Vertex algebras and the class algebras of wreath products

The Jucys-Murphy elements for wreath products G_n associated to any finite group G are introduced and they play an important role in our study on the connections between class algebras of G_n for all n and vertex algebras. We construct an action of (a variant of) the W_{1+\infty} algebra acting irreducibly on the direct sum R_G of the class algebras of G_n for all n in a group theoretic manner. We establish various relations between convolution operators using JM elements and Heisenberg algebra operators acting on R_G. As applications, we obtain two distinct sets of algebra generators for the class algebra of G_n and establish various stability results concerning products of normalized conjugacy classes of G_n and the power sums of Jucys-Murphy elements etc. We introduce a stable algebra which encodes the class algebra structures of G_n for all n, whose structure constants are shown to be non-negative integers. In the symmetric group case (i.e. G is trivial), we recover and strengthen in a uniform approach various results of Lascoux-Thibon, Kerov-Olshanski, and Farahat-Higman, etc.

Hilbert schemes, integrable hierarchies, and Gromov-Witten theory

Various equivariant intersection numbers on Hilbert schemes of points on the affine plane are computed, some of which are organized into tau-functions of 2-Toda hierarchies. A correspondence between the equivariant intersection on Hilbert schemes and stationary Gromov-Witten theory is established.

Universal rings arising in geometry and group theory

Various algebraic structures in geometry and group theory have appeared to be governed by certain universal rings. Examples include: the cohomology rings of Hilbert schemes of points on projective surfaces and quasi-projective surfaces; the Chen-Ruan orbifold cohomology rings of the symmetric products; the class algebras of wreath products, as well as their associated graded algebras with respect to a suitable filtration. We review these examples, and further provide a new elementary construction and explanation in the case of symmetric products. We in addition show that the Jucys-Murphy elements can be used to clarify the Macdonald's isomorphism between the FH-ring for the symmetric groups and the ring of symmetric functions.

Algebraic structures behind Hilbert schemes and wreath products

In this paper we review various strikingly parallel algebraic structures behind Hilbert schemes of points on surfaces and certain finite groups called the wreath products. We explain connections among Hilbert schemes, wreath products, infinite-dimensional Lie algebras, and vertex algebras. As an application we further describe the cohomology ring structure of the Hilbert schemes. We organize this exposition around several general principles which have been supported by various works on these subjects.

Equivariant K-theory, generalized symmetric products, and twisted Heisenberg algebra

For a space X acted by a finite group $\G$, the product space $X^n$ affords a natural action of the wreath product $\Gn$. In this paper we study the K-groups $K_{\tG_n}(X^n)$ of $\Gn$-equivariant Clifford supermodules on $X^n$. We show that $\tFG =\bigoplus_{n\ge 0}K_{\tG_n}(X^n) \otimes \C$ is a Hopf algebra and it is isomorphic to the Fock space of a twisted Heisenberg algebra. Twisted vertex operators make a natural appearance. The algebraic structures on $\tFG$, when $\G$ is trivial and X is a point, specialize to those on a ring of symmetric functions with the Schur Q-functions as a linear basis. As a by-product, we present a novel construction of K-theory operations using the spin representations of the hyperoctahedral groups.
