Hilbert schemes and symmetric products: a dictionary

Given a closed complex manifold $X$ of even dimension, we develop a systematic (vertex) algebraic approach to study the rational orbifold cohomology rings $\orbsym$ of the symmetric products. We present constructions and establish results on the rings $\orbsym$ including two sets of ring generators, universality and stability, as well as connections with vertex operators and W algebras. These are independent of but parallel to the main results on the cohomology rings of the Hilbert schemes of points on surfaces as developed in our earlier works joint with W.-P. Li. We introduce a deformation of the orbifold cup product and explain how it is reflected in terms of modification of vertex operators in the symmetric product case. As a corollary, we obtain a new proof of the isomorphism between the rational cohomology ring of Hilbert schemes and the ring $\orbsym$ (after some modification of signs), when X is a projective surface with a numerically trivial canonical class; we show that no sign modification is needed if both cohomology rings use complex coefficients.

Hilbert schemes and W algebras

We construct geometrically the generating fields of a W algebra which acts irreducibly on the direct sum of the cohomology rings of the Hilbert schemes of n points on a projective surface for all n. We compute explicitly the commutators among a set of linear basis elements of the W algebra, and identify this algebra with a $W_{1+\infty}$-type algebra. A precise formula of certain Chern character operators, which is essential for the construction of the W algebra, is established in terms of the Heisenberg algebra generators. In addition, these Chern character operators are proved to be the zero-modes of vertex operators.

Generators for the cohomology ring of Hilbert schemes of points on surfaces

Using the methods developed in [LQW], math.AG/0009132, we obtain a second set of generators for the cohomology ring of the Hilbert scheme of points on an arbitrary smooth projective surface over the field of complex numbers. These generators have clear and simple geometric as well as algebraic descriptions.

Twisted vertex representations and spin characters

We establish a new group-theoretic realization of the basic representations of the twisted affine and twisted toroidal algebras of ADE types in the same spirit of our new approach to the McKay correspondence. Our vertex operator construction provides a unified description to the character tables for the spin cover of the wreath product of the twisted hyperoctahedral groups and an arbitrary finite group.

Virasoro algebra and wreath product convolution

We present a group theoretic construction of the Virasoro algebra in the framework of wreath products. This can be regarded as a counterpart of a geometric construction of Lehn in the theory of Hilbert schemes of points on a surface.

Lie subalgebras of differential operators on the super circle

We classify anti-involutions of Lie superalgebra $\hsd$ preserving the principal gradation, where $\hsd$ is the central extension of the Lie superalgebra of differential operators on the super circle $S^{1|1}$. We clarify the relations between the corresponding subalgebras fixed by these anti-involutions and subalgebras of $\hat{gl}_{\infty|\infty}$ of types $OSP$ and $P$. We obtain a criterion for an irreducible highest weight module over these subalgebras to be quasifinite and construct free field realizations of a distinguished class of these modules. We further establish dualities between them and certain finite-dimensional classical Lie groups on Fock spaces.

Lagrangian construction of the $(gl_n, gl_m)$-duality

We give a geometric realization of the symmetric algebra of the tensor space $C^n \bigotimes C^m$ together with the action of the dual pair $(gl_n, gl_m)$ in terms of lagrangian cycles in the cotangent bundles of certain varieties. We establish geometrically the equivalence between the $(gl_n, gl_m)$ duality and Schur duality. We establish the connection between Springer's construction of (representations of) Weyl groups and Ginzburg's construction of (representations of) Lie algebras of type $A$.

Remarks on the Schur-Howe-Sergeev Duality

We establish a new Howe duality between a pair of two queer Lie superalgebras (q(m),q(n)). This gives a representation theoretic interpretation of a well-known combinatorial identity for Schur Q-functions. We further establish the equivalence between this new Howe duality and the Schur-Sergeev duality between q(n) and a central extension $\Hy_k$ of the hyperoctahedral group H_k. We show that the zero-weight space of a q(n)-module with highest weight $λ$ given by a strict partition of n is an irreducible module over the finite group $\Hy_n$ parameterized by $λ$. We also discuss some consequences of this Howe duality.

Howe Duality for Lie Superalgebras

We study a dual pair of general linear Lie superalgebras in the sense of R. Howe. We give an explicit multiplicity-free decomposition of a symmetric and skew-symmetric algebra (in the super sense) under the action of the dual pair and present explicit formulas for the highest weight vectors in each isotypic subspace of the symmetric algebra. We give an explicit multiplicity-free decomposition into irreducible $gl(m|n)$-modules of the symmetric and skew-symmetric algebras of the symmetric square of the natural representation of $gl(m|n)$. In the former case we find as well explicit formulas for the highest weight vectors. Our work unifies and generalizes the classical results in symmetric and skew-symmetric models and admits several applications.

Twisted vertex representations via spin groups and the McKay correspondence

We establish a twisted analog of our recent work on vertex representations and the McKay correspondence. For each finite group $Γ$ and a virtual character of $Γ$ we construct twisted vertex operators on the Fock space spanned by the super spin characters of the spin wreath products $Γ\wr\widetilde{S}_n$ of $Γ$ and a double cover of the symmetric group $S_n$ for all $n$. When $Γ$ is a subgroup of $SL_2(\mathbb C)$ with the McKay virtual character, our construction gives a group theoretic realization of the basic representations of the twisted affine and twisted toroidal algebras. When $Γ$ is an arbitrary finite group and the virtual character is trivial, our vertex operator construction yields the spin character tables for $Γ\wr\widetilde{S}_n$.

Orbifold Hodge numbers of the wreath product orbifolds

We prove that the wreath product orbifolds studied earlier by the first author provide a large class of higher dimensional examples of orbifolds whose orbifold Hodge numbers coincide with the ordinary ones of suitable resolutions of singularities. We also make explicit conjectures on elliptic genera for the wreath product orbifolds.

Resolution of singularities of null cones

We give canonical resolutions of singularities of several cone varieties arising from invariant theory. We establish a connection between our resolutions and resolutions of singularities of closure of conjugacy classes in classical Lie algebras.

Hilbert schemes, wreath products, and the McKay correspondence

Various algebraic structures have recently appeared in a parallel way in the framework of Hilbert schemes of points on a surface and respectively in the framework of equivariant K-theory [N1,Gr,S2,W], but direct connections are yet to be clarified to explain such a coincidence. We provide several non-trivial steps toward establishing our main conjecture on the isomorphism between the Hilbert quotient of the affine space $\C^{2n}$ by the wreath product $\G ~ S_n$ and Hilbert schemes of points on the minimal resolution of a simple singularity $\C^2 /\G$. We discuss further various implications of our main conjecture. We obtain a key ingredient toward a direct isomorphism between two forms of McKay correspondence in terms of Hilbert schemes [N1, Gr, N2] and respectively of wreath products [FJW]. We in addition establish a direct identification of various algebraic structures appearing in two different setups of equivariant K-theory [S2, W].

Quantum vertex representations via finite groups and the McKay correspondence

We establish a $q$-analog of our recent work on vertex representations and the McKay correspondence. For each finite group $Γ$ we construct a Fock space and associated vertex operators in terms of wreath products of $Γ\times \mathbb C^{\times}$ and the symmetric groups. An important special case is obtained when $Γ$ is a finite subgroup of $SU_2$, where our construction yields a group theoretic realization of the representations of the quantum affine and quantum toroidal algebras of $ADE$ type.

Equivariant K-theory, wreath products, and Heisenberg algebra

Given a finite group G and a G-space X, we show that a direct sum $F_G (X) = \bigoplus_{n \geq 0}K_{G_n} (X^n) \bigotimes \C$ admits a natural graded Hopf algebra and $λ$-ring structure, where $G_n$ denotes the wreath product $G \sim S_n$. $F_G (X)$ is shown to be isomorphic to a certain supersymmetric product in terms of $K_G(X)\bigotimes \C$ as a graded algebra. We further prove that $F_G (X)$ is isomorphic to the Fock space of an infinite dimensional Heisenberg (super)algebra. As one of several applications, we compute the orbifold Euler characteristic $e(X^n, G_n)$.

Vertex representations via finite groups and the McKay correspondence

Given a finite group $Γ$ and a virtual character $\wt$ on it, we construct a Fock space and associated vertex operators in terms of representation ring of wreath products $Γ\sim S_n$. We recover the character tables of wreath products $Γ\sim S_n$ by vertex operator calculus. When $Γ$ is a finite subgroup of $SU_2$, our construction yields a group theoretic realization of the basic representations of the affine and toroidal Lie algebras of $ADE$ type, which can be regarded as a new form of McKay correspondence.
