Dual pairs and infinite dimensional Lie algebras

We construct and study various dual pairs between finite dimensional classical Lie groups and infinite dimensional Lie algebras in some Fock representations. The infinite dimensional Lie algebras here can be either a completed infinite rank affine Lie algebra, the $\winf$ algebra or its certain Lie subalgebras. We give a formulation in the framework of vertex algebras. We also formulate several conjectures and open problems.

Dimension of a minimal nilpotent orbit

We show that the dimension of the minimal nilpotent coadjoint orbit for a complex simple Lie algebra is equal to twice the dual Coxeter number minus two.

Quasifinite representations of classical Lie subalgebras of W_{1+infty}

We show that there are precisely two, up to conjugation, anti-involutions sigma_{\pm} of the algebra of differential operators on the circle preserving the principal gradation. We classify the irreducible quasifinite highest weight representations of the central extension \hat{D}^{\pm} of the Lie subalgebra of this algebra fixed by - sigma_{\pm}, and find the unitary ones. We realize them in terms of highest weight representations of the central extension of the Lie algebra of infinite matrices with finitely many non-zero diagonals over the truncated polynomial algebra C[u] / (u^{m+1}) and its classical Lie subalgebras of B, C and D types. Character formulas for positive primitive representations of \hat{D}^{\pm} (including all the unitary ones) are obtained. We also realize a class of primitive representations of \hat{D}^{\pm} in terms of free fields and establish a number of duality results between these primitive representations and finite-dimensional irreducible representations of finite-dimensional Lie groups and supergroups. We show that the vacuum module V_c of \hat{D}^+ carries a vertex algebra structure and establish a relationship between V_c for half-integral central charge c and W-algebras.

Duality in infinite dimensional Fock representations

We construct and study in detail various dual pairs acting on some Fock representations between a finite dimensional Lie group and a completed infinite rank affine algebra associated to an infinite affine Cartan matrix. We give explicit decompositions of a Fock representation into a direct sum of irreducible isotypic subspaces with respect to the action of a dual pair, present explicit formulas for the common highest weight vectors and calculate the corresponding highest weights. We further outline applications of these dual pairs to the study of tensor products of modules of such an infinite dimensional Lie algebra.

Dual pairs and tensor categories of modules over Lie algebras gl_{\infty} and W_{1 +\infty}

We introduce a tensor category O_+ (resp. O_{-}) of certain modules of gl_{\infty} with non-negative (resp. non-positive) integral central charges with the usual tensor product. We also introduce a tensor category O_f consisting of certain modules over GL(N) for all N. We show that the tensor categories O_+, O_{-} and O_f are semisimple abelian and all equivalent to each other. We give a formula to decompose a tensor product of two modules in each of these categories. We also introduce a tensor category O^w of certain modules over W_{1 +\infty} with non-negative integral central charges. We show that O^w is semisimple abelian and give an explicit formula to decompose a tensor product of two modules in O^w.

Classification of irreducible modules of W_3 algebra with c = -2

We construct irreducible modules V_α, α\in \C over W_3 algebra with c = -2 in terms of a free bosonic field. We prove that these modules exhaust all the irreducible modules of W_3 algebra with c = -2. Highest weights of modules V_α, α\in \C with respect to the full (two-dimensional) Cartan subalgebra of W_3 algebra are (α(α-1)/2, α(α-1)(2α-1)/6). They are parametrized by points (t, w) on a rational curve w^2 - t^2 (8t + 1)/9 = 0. Irreducible modules of vertex algebra W_{1+\infty} with c = -1 are also classified.

W{1+ \infty} algebra, W_3 algebra, and Friedan-Martinec-Shenker bosonization

We show that the vertex algebra W{1+ \infty} with central charge -1 is isomorphic to a tensor product of the simple W_3 algebra with central charge -2 and a Heisenberg vertex algebra generated by a free bosonic field. We construct a family of irreducible modules of the W_3 algebra with central charge -2 in terms of free fields and calculate the full character formulas of these modules with respect to the full Cartan subalgebra of the W_3 algebra.

Vertex Operator Superalgebras and Their Representations

After giving some definitions for vertex operator SUPERalgebras and their modules, we construct an associative algebra corresponding to any vertex operator superalgebra, such that the representations of the vertex operator algebra are in one-to-one correspondence with those of the corresponding associative algebra. A way is presented to decribe the fusion rules for the vertex operator superalgebras via modules of the associative algebra. The above are generalizations of Zhu's constructions for vertex operator algebras. Then we deal in detail with vertex operator superalgebras corresponding to Neveu-Schwarz algebras, super affine Kac-Moody algebras, and free fermions. We use the machinery established above to find the rationality conditions, classify the representations and compute the fusion rules. In the appendix, we present explicit formulas for singular vectors and defining relations for the integrable representations of super affine algebras. These formulas are not only crucial for the theory of the corresponding vertex operator superalgebras and their representations, but also of independent interest.
