Spin-Polarized Magnetic Metal Electrodes for Magnetic Tunnel Junctions

Magnetic tunnel junctions are foundational components of spintronic memory, sensing, and computing, and their performance depends critically on the magnetic metallic electrodes. This Perspective examines electrode materials through the lens of magnetic order and the distinct microscopic mechanisms that generate spin-selective tunneling. Conventional ferromagnets, including CoFeB and half-metallic Heusler alloys, support exchange-split electronic states and symmetry-filtered tunneling, whereas compensated collinear and noncollinear antiferromagnets exploit sublattice selectivity, spin-orbit anisotropy, vector spin textures, and magnetic multipoles. Altermagnets provide a collinear, zero-net-moment route based on symmetry-allowed momentum-dependent spin splitting. Across these material classes, we compare the origins of tunneling polarization, the roles of barrier evanescent states and interface termination, and strategies for electrically writing and reading the relevant magnetic order. This comparison reveals a broader design principle: effective electrode polarization is not a scalar bulk quantity, but a momentum-, orbital-, symmetry-, and interface-resolved transport property. Beyond the pursuit of ever larger tunneling magnetoresistance, future progress will depend on converting the unconventional spin polarization of emerging magnetic metals into electrically addressable, thermally robust, and reproducible tunneling functionality at realistic interfaces.

From Utterances to Networks: Modelling Slang Adoption and Diffusion Across Subreddits

Adoption and diffusion of neologisms in online communities have received renewed attention in recent years. As internet slang terms such as APT, referring to a K-pop song, and phrases such as Canon Event meaning an embarrassing but pivotal event, go viral online, it becomes increasingly important to understand the mechanisms that contribute to their success. Prior studies have often explained slang diffusion either from the perspective of social interaction or from the linguistic properties of the slang itself, but rarely from both perspectives together. One major obstacle has been the high cost of annotating slang usage in large-scale online communication. Recent advances in large language models (LLMs), however, make it possible to use them as scalable annotators for such tasks. In this study, we first curate a human-annotated benchmark to evaluate LLM performance in detecting slang usage in real Reddit communication. We then leverage LLM-based annotations to model slang adoption and diffusion. Our results show that slang diffusers with higher bridging capital are associated with increased subsequent adoption, whereas diffusers with higher bonding capital are associated with reduced adoption. We also find that wider contextual usage of a slang term is associated with a longer time before new users officially adopt it. Together, these findings suggest that both social-network structure and linguistic context shape the diffusion of neologisms in online communities.

TARE: Tail Aware Evaluation of HPC Job Runtime Prediction

Runtime estimates affect reservation quality, backfilling opportunities, and queue delay in HPC schedulers. Under heavy tailed workloads, however, averaging over jobs can misrepresent scheduling impact because a small fraction of jobs dominates resource usage. This paper presents an empirical evaluation methodology for HPC job runtime prediction that focuses on the tail, combining GeoAccuracy weighted by resource usage with decile and split analyses. Using production traces from NREL Eagle and ALCF Mira/Intrepid, we compare XGBoost and Last2 against the user provided walltime estimate at submission (UserReq). Across all three datasets, evaluation focused on the tail changes the offline conclusion: MeanAccuracy keeps the methods relatively close, whereas GeoAccuracy reveals clearer separation and makes UserReq's strength in the upper tail visible. In the top decile, UserReq achieves the highest GeoAccuracy and lowest underestimation rate on all three datasets, and this pattern remains stable across rolling splits. We then translate this signal into a simple hybrid scheduling policy that keeps XGBoost for most jobs and routes the top decile by proxy_cost at submission to UserReq. Online replay on four production queues reduces mean wait time by up to 8% and increases backfilled jobs by 50% to 115%. These results show that offline evaluation focused on the tail better characterizes prediction quality relevant to scheduling and informs scheduling policy design.

Impact of Engagement Allocation Across Social Platform Modalities on E-Commerce Performance

Firms increasingly operate across multiple social media platforms, yet it remains unclear whether diversifying engagement across platforms enhances performance or simply fragments marketing efforts. We examine how the allocation of user engagement across platforms affects e commerce sales performance. Using panel data on approximately 2,000 leading U.S. online retailers from 2012 to 2019, combined with detailed engagement measures across five major social media platforms, we construct firm year indicators of engagement diversification and explore how they relate to sales performance. We find that greater diversification in engagement allocation is associated with significantly higher web sales. Importantly, this effect is not driven by platform adoption breadth or overall engagement volume. Rather than increasing traffic quantity, diversification improves conversion rates and enhances traffic quality. Mechanism analyses reveal that these performance gains stem from cross modality complementarities: engagement distributed across heterogeneous content modalities (image, video, and mixed) generates reinforcing brand exposure, whereas diversification across platforms within the same modality yields limited benefits. Furthermore, the positive effects of diversification arise only when there is sufficient overlap in audiences across platforms, providing additional evidence for a memory-reinforcement mechanism. Taken together, these findings document the importance of engagement allocation structure and highlight the role of cross-modality complementarities in multi platform digital marketing strategies.

Saturated and Anisotropic Magnetostriction in an Altermagnet

Magnetostriction, a fundamental phenomenon bridging magnetism and mechanics, has enabled a broad spectrum of applications. For almost two centuries, it has been mainly investigated for ferromagnets. Regarding the magnetostriction of antiferromagnets (AFMs), limitedly known examples for both conventional collinear AFMs and noncollinear AFMs predominantly exhibit non-saturating magnetic-field dependence. Herein, we report an easily saturated magnetostriction effect in a prototypical altermagnet - MnTe, which is an emerging class of collinear AFMs with special crystal symmetries. For high-quality MnTe single crystals, the magnetostriction saturates under a moderate field of ~0.7 T with an intriguing two-fold-symmetry anisotropy. First-principles calculations reveal that the saturated and anisotropic magnetostriction originates from symmetry-allowed coupling between elastic strain and its Néel order parameter. These findings break the traditional wisdom on antiferromagnetic magnetostriction.

Learning U-Statistics with Active Inference

$U$-statistics play a central role in statistical inference. In many modern applications, however, acquiring the labels required for $U$-statistics is costly. Motivated by recent advances in active inference, we develop an active inference framework for $U$-statistics that selectively queries informative labels to improve estimation efficiency under a fixed labeling budget, while preserving valid statistical inference. Our approach is built on the augmented inverse probability weighting $U$-statistic, which is designed to incorporate the sampling rule and machine learning predictions. We characterize the optimal sampling rule that minimizes its variance and design practical sampling strategies. We further extend the framework to $U$-statistic-based empirical risk minimization. Experiments on real datasets demonstrate substantial gains in estimation efficiency over baseline methods, while maintaining target coverage.

Giant Room-Temperature Third-Order Electrical Transport in a Thin-Film Altermagnet Candidate

Quantum geometry, a quantum mechanical quantity comprised of Berry curvature and quantum metric, describes the geometric structure of the electronic bands in solids. The correlation between nontrivial quantum geometry and quantum materials leads to new findings in condensed matter systems. Here we demonstrate that altermagnets, with spontaneously broken time-reversal (T)- half-lattice-translation and parity-time symmetry, host both T-odd and T-even quantum geometric quantities that simultaneously manifest themselves despite the vanishing net magnetization. Consequently, giant room-temperature third-order electrical transport responses with sizable quantum geometric contributions are observed in (101)-oriented RuO2 thin films, an altermagnetic candidate; in particular, the third-order Hall effect is intimately correlated with altermagnetic order and can serve as a promising tool for detecting the Neel vector. Our work not only supports the existence of altermagnetism in 8-nm-thick RuO2 thin films, but also shows altermagnets as a versatile platform for exploring quantum geometry and constructing quantum electronic and spintronic devices.

Bulk OsO2 Single Crystals: Superior Catalysts for Water Oxidation

Although rutile RuO2 has been a well-known and almost the best oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst, the OER properties for the similar rutile oxide OsO2 with the same group element with Ru have been unknown, mainly due to long-standing synthesis difficulties. In this work, we report the successful synthesis of high-quality OsO2 single crystals, and the ground micrometer-size single crystals are chemically stable in alkaline solutions and exhibit robust OER performance. In sharp contrast, OsO2 nanopowder reacts quickly with KOH solutions and cannot work for OER. Compared with commercial RuO2 nanopowder, the OsO2 single crystals show comparable catalytic current densities, remarkably lower overpotentials at high current densities and better stability. These findings question the universal applicability of nanoscaling and highlight crystal integrity as a key descriptor for achieving stable and efficient OER electrocatalysis.

Pressure-Induced Metal-Insulator and Paramagnet-Altermagnet Transitions in Rutile OsO2 Single Crystals

Altermagnets with compensated spin structures and nonrelativistic spin splitting have emerged as a new class of magnetic materials. Rutile OsO2 has been theoretically predicted to be altermagnetic, but experimental studies have been limited by synthesis challenges. We have succeeded in synthesizing high-quality single crystals of rutile OsO2. Electrical transport studies reveal that OsO2 is highly conductive and exhibits clear Fermi liquid behavior, indicating strong electron-electron scattering. Magnetic measurements show that the crystals are isotropically paramagnetic. Density-functional theory calculations indicate that bulk OsO2 is semimetallic with coexisting electron and hole pockets, with its magnetic ground state strongly dependent on the on-site Coulomb correlation U. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy studies unveil that the bulk bands do not yet show altermagnetic spin splitting. Interestingly, resistivity is rather pressure sensitive: at 44 GPa, a clear metal-insulator transition occurs. Hybrid functional calculations reveal that applying pressure significantly increases the Hubbard U value, driving a phase transition from a paramagnetic metal to an altermagnetic metal, and eventually to an altermagnetic insulator. These findings suggest that tuning external pressure effectively modulates the magnetic ground state of OsO2, providing a pathway to realize altermagnetism in this material.

Observation of Orbit-Orbit Torques: Highly Efficient Torques on Orbital Moments Induced by Orbital Currents

We study the current-induced torques in bilayers composed of a light 3d metal, chromium, and a rare-earth ferromagnet with finite orbital moments, terbium, utilizing second-harmonic Hall-response measurements. The dampinglike torque efficiency of chromium is found to be positive and reaches ~3.66 in this system, in sharp contrast to the negative and subtle dampinglike torque efficiency in general Cr/ferromagnet heterostructures with quenched orbital moment. We suggest that the orbital currents generated by the orbital Hall effect in Cr can be injected into Tb with negligible loss at the interface and then efficiently interact with the orbital moments. We term such an exotic effect as the orbit-orbit torque (OOT). Our work implies that orbital currents could be harnessed to manipulate the orbital magnetization of materials, which would advance the development of orbitronics.

Electric-Field-Controlled Altermagnetic Transition for Neuromorphic Computing

Altermagnets represent a novel magnetic phase with transformative potential for ultrafast spintronics, yet efficient control of their magnetic states remains challenging. We demonstrate an ultra-low-power electric-field control of altermagnetism in MnTe through strain-mediated coupling in MnTe/PMN-PT heterostructures with negligible Joule heating. Application of +6 kV/cm electric fields induces piezoelectric strain in PMN-PT, modulating the Néel temperature from 310 to 328 K. As a result, around the magnetic phase transition, the altermagnetic spin splitting of MnTe is reversibly switched "on" and "off" by the electric fields. Meanwhile, the piezoelectric strain generates lattice distortions and magnetic structure changes in MnTe, enabling up to 9.7% resistance modulation around the magnetic phase transition temperature. Leveraging this effect, we implement programmable resistance states in a Hopfield neuromorphic network, achieving 100% pattern recognition accuracy at <=40% noise levels. This approach establishes the electric-field control as a low-power strategy for altermagnetic manipulation while demonstrating the viability of altermagnetic materials for energy-efficient neuromorphic computing beyond conventional charge-based architectures.

Full Electrical Switching of a Freestanding Ferrimagnetic Metal for Energy-Efficient Bipolar Neuromorphic Computing

Flexible electronics and neuromorphic computing face key challenges in material integration and function retention. In particular, freestanding membranes suffer from slow sacrificial layer removal and interfacial strain, while neuromorphic hardware often relies on area-intensive dual-device schemes for bipolar synaptic weights. Here, we present a universal strategy based on water-soluble Sr4Al2O7 sacrificial layers, enabling the rapid release of freestanding ferrimagnetic metal membranes, which exhibit deterministic spin-orbit torque switching characteristics with well-preserved perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and are potential for next-generation ultrafast information technology. Extending this approach, we realize single-device ferrimagnetic synapses exhibiting intrinsic bipolar resistive switching. When implemented in a ResNet-18 architecture, these devices achieve 92% accuracy on CIFAR-10 - comparable to floating-point software models - while halving device counts relative to differential-pair implementations. These results establish a scalable platform linking flexible spintronics with compact, high-performance neuromorphic systems, offering foundational advances for next-generation electronics and brain-inspired hardware.

AI Spillover is Different: Flat and Lean Firms as Engines of AI Diffusion and Productivity Gain

Labor mobility is a critical source of technology acquisition for firms. This paper examines how artificial intelligence (AI) knowledge is disseminated across firms through labor mobility and identifies the organizational conditions that facilitate productive spillovers. Using a comprehensive dataset of over 460 million job records from Revelio Labs (2010 to 2023), we construct an inter-firm mobility network of AI workers among over 16,000 U.S. companies. Estimating a Cobb Douglas production function, we find that firms benefit substantially from the AI investments of other firms from which they hire AI talents, with productivity spillovers two to three times larger than those associated with traditional IT after accounting for labor scale. Importantly, these spillovers are contingent on organizational context: hiring from flatter and more lean startup method intensive firms generates significant productivity gains, whereas hiring from firms lacking these traits yields little benefit. Mechanism tests indicate that "flat and lean" organizations cultivate more versatile AI generalists who transfer richer knowledge across firms. These findings reveal that AI spillovers differ fundamentally from traditional IT spillovers: while IT spillovers primarily arise from scale and process standardization, AI spillovers critically depend on the experimental and integrative environments in which AI knowledge is produced. Together, these results underscore the importance of considering both labor mobility and organizational context in understanding the full impact of AI-driven productivity spillovers.

VDSAgents: A PCS-Guided Multi-Agent System for Veridical Data Science Automation

Large language models (LLMs) become increasingly integrated into data science workflows for automated system design. However, these LLM-driven data science systems rely solely on the internal reasoning of LLMs, lacking guidance from scientific and theoretical principles. This limits their trustworthiness and robustness, especially when dealing with noisy and complex real-world datasets. This paper provides VDSAgents, a multi-agent system grounded in the Predictability-Computability-Stability (PCS) principles proposed in the Veridical Data Science (VDS) framework. Guided by PCS principles, the system implements a modular workflow for data cleaning, feature engineering, modeling, and evaluation. Each phase is handled by an elegant agent, incorporating perturbation analysis, unit testing, and model validation to ensure both functionality and scientific auditability. We evaluate VDSAgents on nine datasets with diverse characteristics, comparing it with state-of-the-art end-to-end data science systems, such as AutoKaggle and DataInterpreter, using DeepSeek-V3 and GPT-4o as backends. VDSAgents consistently outperforms the results of AutoKaggle and DataInterpreter, which validates the feasibility of embedding PCS principles into LLM-driven data science automation.

Artificial Intelligence, Domain AI Readiness, and Firm Productivity

Although Artificial Intelligence (AI) holds great promise for enhancing innovation and productivity, many firms struggle to realize its benefits. We investigate why some firms and industries succeed with AI while others do not, focusing on the degree to which an industrial domain is technologically integrated with AI, which we term "domain AI readiness". Using panel data on Chinese listed firms from 2016 to 2022, we examine how the interaction between firm-level AI capabilities and domain AI readiness affects firm performance. We create novel constructs from patent data and measure the domain AI readiness of a specific domain by analyzing the co-occurrence of four-digit International Patent Classification (IPC4) codes related to AI with the specific domain across all patents in that domain. Our findings reveal a strong complementarity: AI capabilities yield greater productivity and innovation gains when deployed in domains with higher AI readiness, whereas benefits are limited in domains that are technologically unprepared or already obsolete. These results remain robust when using local AI policy initiatives as instrumental variables. Further analysis shows that this complementarity is driven by external advances in domain-AI integration, rather than firms' own strategic pivots. Time-series analysis of IPC4 co-occurrence patterns further suggests that improvements in domain AI readiness stem primarily from the academic advancements of AI in specific domains.

A 4D Radar Camera Extrinsic Calibration Tool Based on 3D Uncertainty Perspective N Points

4D imaging radar is a type of low-cost millimeter-wave radar(costing merely 10-20$\%$ of lidar systems) capable of providing range, azimuth, elevation, and Doppler velocity information. Accurate extrinsic calibration between millimeter-wave radar and camera systems is critical for robust multimodal perception in robotics, yet remains challenging due to inherent sensor noise characteristics and complex error propagation. This paper presents a systematic calibration framework to address critical challenges through a spatial 3d uncertainty-aware PnP algorithm (3DUPnP) that explicitly models spherical coordinate noise propagation in radar measurements, then compensating for non-zero error expectations during coordinate transformations. Finally, experimental validation demonstrates significant performance improvements over state-of-the-art CPnP baseline, including improved consistency in simulations and enhanced precision in physical experiments. This study provides a robust calibration solution for robotic systems equipped with millimeter-wave radar and cameras, tailored specifically for autonomous driving and robotic perception applications.

Spin-Splitting Magnetoresistance in Altermagnetic RuO2 Thin Films

The recently discovered altermagnets, featured by the exotic correlation of magnetic exchange interaction and alternating crystal environments, have offered exciting cutting-edge opportunities for spintronics. Nevertheless, the altermagnetism of RuO2, one of the earliest-discovered altermagnets, is currently under intense debate. Here we try to resolve this controversy by demonstrating an altermagnetic spin-splitting magnetoresistance (SSMR) effect that is driven by a spin current associated with the giant nonrelativistic spin splitting of an altermagnet. Compared to the spin Hall magnetoresistance induced by a conventional relativistic spin current, the SSMR is characterized by unusual angular dependence with a phase-shift feature underpinned by the Neel-vector orientation and pronounced temperature dependence caused by its susceptibility to electron scattering. Through systematical investigations on the magnetoresistance of (101)-RuO2/Co bilayers, we disentangle a sizable SSMR and hence unveil a Neel vector along [001] direction. Our work not only demonstrates a simple electric avenue to probing the Neel vector of altermagnets, but also indicates long-range magnetic order in thin films of RuO2.
