An auto-parameter denoising method for nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy based on low-rank Hankel matrix

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, which is modeled as the sum of damped exponential signals, has become an indispensable tool in various scenarios, such as the structure and function determination, chemical analysis, and disease diagnosis. NMR spectroscopy signals, however, are usually corrupted by Gaussian noise in practice, raising difficulties in sequential analysis and quantification of the signals. The low-rank Hankel property plays an important role in the denoising issue, but selecting an appropriate parameter still remains a problem. In this work, we explore the effect of the regularization parameter of a convex optimization denoising method based on low-rank Hankel matrices for exponential signals corrupted by Gaussian noise. An accurate estimate on the spectral norm of weighted Hankel matrices is provided as a guidance to set the regularization parameter. The bound can be efficiently calculated since it only depends on the standard deviation of the noise and a constant. Aided by the bound, one can easily obtain an auto-setting regularization parameter to produce promising denoised results. Our experiments on synthetic and realistic NMR spectroscopy data demonstrate a superior denoising performance of our proposed approach in comparison with the typical Cadzow and the state-of-the-art QR decomposition methods, especially in the low signal-to-noise ratio regime.

Pretraining Strategies, Waveform Model Choice, and Acoustic Configurations for Multi-Speaker End-to-End Speech Synthesis

We explore pretraining strategies including choice of base corpus with the aim of choosing the best strategy for zero-shot multi-speaker end-to-end synthesis. We also examine choice of neural vocoder for waveform synthesis, as well as acoustic configurations used for mel spectrograms and final audio output. We find that fine-tuning a multi-speaker model from found audiobook data that has passed a simple quality threshold can improve naturalness and similarity to unseen target speakers of synthetic speech. Additionally, we find that listeners can discern between a 16kHz and 24kHz sampling rate, and that WaveRNN produces output waveforms of a comparable quality to WaveNet, with a faster inference time.

Denoising-and-Dereverberation Hierarchical Neural Vocoder for Robust Waveform Generation

This paper presents a denoising and dereverberation hierarchical neural vocoder (DNR-HiNet) to convert noisy and reverberant acoustic features into a clean speech waveform. We implement it mainly by modifying the amplitude spectrum predictor (ASP) in the original HiNet vocoder. This modified denoising and dereverberation ASP (DNR-ASP) can predict clean log amplitude spectra (LAS) from input degraded acoustic features. To achieve this, the DNR-ASP first predicts the noisy and reverberant LAS, noise LAS related to the noise information, and room impulse response related to the reverberation information then performs initial denoising and dereverberation. The initial processed LAS are then enhanced by another neural network as the final clean LAS. To further improve the quality of the generated clean LAS, we also introduce a bandwidth extension model and frequency resolution extension model in the DNR-ASP. The experimental results indicate that the DNR-HiNet vocoder was able to generate a denoised and dereverberated waveform given noisy and reverberant acoustic features and outperformed the original HiNet vocoder and a few other neural vocoders. We also applied the DNR-HiNet vocoder to speech enhancement tasks, and its performance was competitive with several advanced speech enhancement methods.

Fast Local Attack: Generating Local Adversarial Examples for Object Detectors

The deep neural network is vulnerable to adversarial examples. Adding imperceptible adversarial perturbations to images is enough to make them fail. Most existing research focuses on attacking image classifiers or anchor-based object detectors, but they generate globally perturbation on the whole image, which is unnecessary. In our work, we leverage higher-level semantic information to generate high aggressive local perturbations for anchor-free object detectors. As a result, it is less computationally intensive and achieves a higher black-box attack as well as transferring attack performance. The adversarial examples generated by our method are not only capable of attacking anchor-free object detectors, but also able to be transferred to attack anchor-based object detector.

How Similar or Different Is Rakugo Speech Synthesizer to Professional Performers?

We have been working on speech synthesis for rakugo (a traditional Japanese form of verbal entertainment similar to one-person stand-up comedy) toward speech synthesis that authentically entertains audiences. In this paper, we propose a novel evaluation methodology using synthesized rakugo speech and real rakugo speech uttered by professional performers of three different ranks. The naturalness of the synthesized speech was comparable to that of the human speech, but the synthesized speech entertained listeners less than the performers of any rank. However, we obtained some interesting insights into challenges to be solved in order to achieve a truly entertaining rakugo synthesizer. For example, naturalness was not the most important factor, even though it has generally been emphasized as the most important point to be evaluated in the conventional speech synthesis field. More important factors were the understandability of the content and distinguishability of the characters in the rakugo story, both of which the synthesized rakugo speech was relatively inferior at as compared with the professional performers. We also found that fundamental frequency fo modeling should be further improved to better entertain audiences. These results show important steps to reaching authentically entertaining speech synthesis.

End-to-End Text-to-Speech using Latent Duration based on VQ-VAE

Explicit duration modeling is a key to achieving robust and efficient alignment in text-to-speech synthesis (TTS). We propose a new TTS framework using explicit duration modeling that incorporates duration as a discrete latent variable to TTS and enables joint optimization of whole modules from scratch. We formulate our method based on conditional VQ-VAE to handle discrete duration in a variational autoencoder and provide a theoretical explanation to justify our method. In our framework, a connectionist temporal classification (CTC) -based force aligner acts as the approximate posterior, and text-to-duration works as the prior in the variational autoencoder. We evaluated our proposed method with a listening test and compared it with other TTS methods based on soft-attention or explicit duration modeling. The results showed that our systems rated between soft-attention-based methods (Transformer-TTS, Tacotron2) and explicit duration modeling-based methods (Fastspeech).

The Minimal Seesaw Model with a Modular $S_4$ Symmetry

In this paper, we incorporate the modular $S^{}_4$ flavor symmetry into the supersymmetric version of the minimal type-I seesaw model, in which only two right-handed neutrino singlets are introduced to account for tiny Majorana neutrino masses, and explore its implications for the lepton mass spectra, flavor mixing and CP violation. The basic idea is to assign two right-handed neutrino singlets into the unique two-dimensional irreducible representation of the modular $S^{}_4$ symmetry group. Moreover, we show that the matter-antimatter asymmetry in our Universe can be successfully explained via the resonant leptogenesis mechanism working at a relatively-low seesaw scale $Λ^{}_{\rm SS} \approx 10^7~{\rm GeV}$, with which the potential problem of the gravitino overproduction can be avoided. In this connection, we emphasize that the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry may lead to a stringent constraint on the parameter space and testable predictions for low-energy observables.

Holistic Combination of Structural and Textual Code Information for Context based API Recommendation

Context based API recommendation is an important way to help developers find the needed APIs effectively and efficiently. For effective API recommendation, we need not only a joint view of both structural and textual code information, but also a holistic view of correlated API usage in control and data flow graph as a whole. Unfortunately, existing API recommendation methods exploit structural or textual code information separately. In this work, we propose a novel API recommendation approach called APIRec-CST (API Recommendation by Combining Structural and Textual code information). APIRec-CST is a deep learning model that combines the API usage with the text information in the source code based on an API Context Graph Network and a Code Token Network that simultaneously learn structural and textual features for API recommendation. We apply APIRec-CST to train a model for JDK library based on 1,914 open-source Java projects and evaluate the accuracy and MRR (Mean Reciprocal Rank) of API recommendation with another 6 open-source projects. The results show that our approach achieves respectively a top-1, top-5, top-10 accuracy and MRR of 60.3%, 81.5%, 87.7% and 69.4%, and significantly outperforms an existing graph-based statistical approach and a tree-based deep learning approach for API recommendation. A further analysis shows that textual code information makes sense and improves the accuracy and MRR. We also conduct a user study in which two groups of students are asked to finish 6 programming tasks with or without our APIRec-CST plugin. The results show that APIRec-CST can help the students to finish the tasks faster and more accurately and the feedback on the usability is overwhelmingly positive.

Quantum Periods and Spectra in Dimer Models and Calabi-Yau Geometries

We study a class of quantum integrable systems derived from dimer graphs and also described by local toric Calabi-Yau geometries with higher genus mirror curves, generalizing some previous works on genus one mirror curves. We compute the spectra of the quantum systems both by standard perturbation method and by Bohr-Sommerfeld method with quantum periods as the phase volumes. In this way, we obtain some exact analytic results for the classical and quantum periods of the Calabi-Yau geometries. We also determine the differential operators of the quantum periods and compute the topological string free energy in Nekrasov-Shatashvili (NS) limit. The results agree with calculations from other methods such as the topological vertex.

Investigation of learning abilities on linguistic features in sequence-to-sequence text-to-speech synthesis

Neural sequence-to-sequence text-to-speech synthesis (TTS) can produce high-quality speech directly from text or simple linguistic features such as phonemes. Unlike traditional pipeline TTS, the neural sequence-to-sequence TTS does not require manually annotated and complicated linguistic features such as part-of-speech tags and syntactic structures for system training. However, it must be carefully designed and well optimized so that it can implicitly extract useful linguistic features from the input features. In this paper we investigate under what conditions the neural sequence-to-sequence TTS can work well in Japanese and English along with comparisons with deep neural network (DNN) based pipeline TTS systems. Unlike past comparative studies, the pipeline systems also use autoregressive probabilistic modeling and a neural vocoder. We investigated systems from three aspects: a) model architecture, b) model parameter size, and c) language. For the model architecture aspect, we adopt modified Tacotron systems that we previously proposed and their variants using an encoder from Tacotron or Tacotron2. For the model parameter size aspect, we investigate two model parameter sizes. For the language aspect, we conduct listening tests in both Japanese and English to see if our findings can be generalized across languages. Our experiments suggest that a) a neural sequence-to-sequence TTS system should have a sufficient number of model parameters to produce high quality speech, b) it should also use a powerful encoder when it takes characters as inputs, and c) the encoder still has a room for improvement and needs to have an improved architecture to learn supra-segmental features more appropriately.

Leveraging GANs to Improve Continuous Path Keyboard Input Models

Continuous path keyboard input has higher inherent ambiguity than standard tapping, because the path trace may exhibit not only local overshoots/undershoots (as in tapping) but also, depending on the user, substantial mid-path excursions. Deploying a robust solution thus requires a large amount of high-quality training data, which is difficult to collect/annotate. In this work, we address this challenge by using GANs to augment our training corpus with user-realistic synthetic data. Experiments show that, even though GAN-generated data does not capture all the characteristics of real user data, it still provides a substantial boost in accuracy at a 5:1 GAN-to-real ratio. GANs therefore inject more robustness in the model through greatly increased word coverage and path diversity.

Theme-Matters: Fashion Compatibility Learning via Theme Attention

Fashion compatibility learning is important to many fashion markets such as outfit composition and online fashion recommendation. Unlike previous work, we argue that fashion compatibility is not only a visual appearance compatible problem but also a theme-matters problem. An outfit, which consists of a set of fashion items (e.g., shirt, suit, shoes, etc.), is considered to be compatible for a "dating" event, yet maybe not for a "business" occasion. In this paper, we aim at solving the fashion compatibility problem given specific themes. To this end, we built the first real-world theme-aware fashion dataset comprising 14K around outfits labeled with 32 themes. In this dataset, there are more than 40K fashion items labeled with 152 fine-grained categories. We also propose an attention model learning fashion compatibility given a specific theme. It starts with a category-specific subspace learning, which projects compatible outfit items in certain categories to be close in the subspace. Thanks to strong connections between fashion themes and categories, we then build a theme-attention model over the category-specific embedding space. This model associates themes with the pairwise compatibility with attention, and thus compute the outfit-wise compatibility. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to estimate outfit compatibility conditional on a theme. We conduct extensive qualitative and quantitative experiments on our new dataset. Our method outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches.

Learning by Minimizing the Sum of Ranked Range

In forming learning objectives, one oftentimes needs to aggregate a set of individual values to a single output. Such cases occur in the aggregate loss, which combines individual losses of a learning model over each training sample, and in the individual loss for multi-label learning, which combines prediction scores over all class labels. In this work, we introduce the sum of ranked range (SoRR) as a general approach to form learning objectives. A ranked range is a consecutive sequence of sorted values of a set of real numbers. The minimization of SoRR is solved with the difference of convex algorithm (DCA). We explore two applications in machine learning of the minimization of the SoRR framework, namely the AoRR aggregate loss for binary classification and the TKML individual loss for multi-label/multi-class classification. Our empirical results highlight the effectiveness of the proposed optimization framework and demonstrate the applicability of proposed losses using synthetic and real datasets.

$α$-Logarithmic negativity

The logarithmic negativity of a bipartite quantum state is a widely employed entanglement measure in quantum information theory, due to the fact that it is easy to compute and serves as an upper bound on distillable entanglement. More recently, the $κ$-entanglement of a bipartite state was shown to be the first entanglement measure that is both easily computable and has a precise information-theoretic meaning, being equal to the exact entanglement cost of a bipartite quantum state when the free operations are those that completely preserve the positivity of the partial transpose [Wang and Wilde, Phys. Rev. Lett. 125(4):040502, July 2020]. In this paper, we provide a non-trivial link between these two entanglement measures, by showing that they are the extremes of an ordered family of $α$-logarithmic negativity entanglement measures, each of which is identified by a parameter $α\in[ 1,\infty] $. In this family, the original logarithmic negativity is recovered as the smallest with $α=1$, and the $κ$-entanglement is recovered as the largest with $α=\infty$. We prove that the $α$-logarithmic negativity satisfies the following properties: entanglement monotone, normalization, faithfulness, and subadditivity. We also prove that it is neither convex nor monogamous. Finally, we define the $α$-logarithmic negativity of a quantum channel as a generalization of the notion for quantum states, and we show how to generalize many of the concepts to arbitrary resource theories.

Stacking fault energy prediction for austenitic steels: thermodynamic modeling vs. machine learning

Stacking fault energy (SFE) is of the most critical microstructure attribute for controlling the deformation mechanism and optimizing mechanical properties of austenitic steels, while there are no accurate and straightforward computational tools for modeling it. In this work, we applied both thermodynamic modeling and machine learning to predict the stacking fault energy (SFE) for more than 300 austenitic steels. The comparison indicates a high need of improving low-temperature CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagrams) databases and interfacial energy prediction to enhance thermodynamic model reliability. The ensembled machine learning algorithms provide a more reliable prediction compared with thermodynamic and empirical models. Based on the statistical analysis of experimental results, only Ni and Fe have a moderate monotonic influence on SFE, while many other elements exhibit a complex effect that their influence on SFE may change with the alloy composition.

Strong Spin Squeezing Induced by Weak Squeezing of Light inside a Cavity

We propose a simple method for generating spin squeezing of atomic ensembles in a Floquet cavity subject to a weak, detuned two-photon driving. We demonstrate that {\it the weak squeezing of light inside the cavity can, counterintuitively, induce strong spin squeezing}. This is achieved by exploiting the anti-Stokes scattering process of a photon pair interacting with an atom. Specifically, {\it one photon of the photon pair is scattered into the cavity resonance by absorbing partially the energy of the other photon whose remaining energy excites the atom}. The scattering, combined with a Floquet sideband, provides an alternative mechanism to implement Heisenberg-limited spin squeezing. Our proposal does {\it not} need multiple classical and cavity-photon drivings applied to atoms in ensembles, and therefore its experimental feasibility is greatly improved compared to other cavity-based schemes. As an example, we demonstrate a possible implementation with a superconducting resonator coupled to a nitrogen-vacancy electronic-spin ensemble.

Crossing-Domain Generative Adversarial Networks for Unsupervised Multi-Domain Image-to-Image Translation

State-of-the-art techniques in Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have shown remarkable success in image-to-image translation from peer domain X to domain Y using paired image data. However, obtaining abundant paired data is a non-trivial and expensive process in the majority of applications. When there is a need to translate images across n domains, if the training is performed between every two domains, the complexity of the training will increase quadratically. Moreover, training with data from two domains only at a time cannot benefit from data of other domains, which prevents the extraction of more useful features and hinders the progress of this research area. In this work, we propose a general framework for unsupervised image-to-image translation across multiple domains, which can translate images from domain X to any a domain without requiring direct training between the two domains involved in image translation. A byproduct of the framework is the reduction of computing time and computing resources, since it needs less time than training the domains in pairs as is done in state-of-the-art works. Our proposed framework consists of a pair of encoders along with a pair of GANs which learns high-level features across different domains to generate diverse and realistic samples from. Our framework shows competing results on many image-to-image tasks compared with state-of-the-art techniques.

Tandem Assessment of Spoofing Countermeasures and Automatic Speaker Verification: Fundamentals

Recent years have seen growing efforts to develop spoofing countermeasures (CMs) to protect automatic speaker verification (ASV) systems from being deceived by manipulated or artificial inputs. The reliability of spoofing CMs is typically gauged using the equal error rate (EER) metric. The primitive EER fails to reflect application requirements and the impact of spoofing and CMs upon ASV and its use as a primary metric in traditional ASV research has long been abandoned in favour of risk-based approaches to assessment. This paper presents several new extensions to the tandem detection cost function (t-DCF), a recent risk-based approach to assess the reliability of spoofing CMs deployed in tandem with an ASV system. Extensions include a simplified version of the t-DCF with fewer parameters, an analysis of a special case for a fixed ASV system, simulations which give original insights into its interpretation and new analyses using the ASVspoof 2019 database. It is hoped that adoption of the t-DCF for the CM assessment will help to foster closer collaboration between the anti-spoofing and ASV research communities.
