$Λ_b\toΛ_cτ\barν_τ$ decay in scalar and vector leptoquark scenarios

It has been shown that the anomalies observed in $\bar B\to D^{(\ast)}τ\barν_τ$ and $\bar B\to \bar K\ell^+\ell^-$ decays can be resolved by adding a single scalar or vector leptoquark to the Standard Model, while constraints from other precision measurements in the flavour sector can be satisfied without fine-tuning. To further explore these two interesting scenarios, in this paper, we study their effects in the semi-leptonic $Λ_b\toΛ_cτ\barν_τ$ decay. Using the best-fit solutions for the operator coefficients allowed by the current data of mesonic decays, we find that (i) the two scenarios give similar amounts of enhancements to the branching fraction $\mathcal B(Λ_b\toΛ_cτ\barν_τ)$ and the ratio $R_{Λ_c}=\mathcal B(Λ_b\toΛ_c τ\barν_τ)/\mathcal B(Λ_b\toΛ_c\ell\barν_\ell)$, (ii) the two best-fit solutions in each of these two scenarios are also indistinguishable from each other, (iii) both scenarios give nearly the same predictions as those of the Standard Model for the longitudinal polarizations of $Λ_c$ and $τ$ as well as the lepton-side forward-backward asymmetry. With future measurements of these observables in $Λ_b\toΛ_cτ\barν_τ$ decay at the LHCb, the two leptoquark scenarios could be further tested, and even differentiated from the other NP explanations for the $R_{D^{(\ast)}}$ anomalies. We also discuss the feasibility for the measurements of these observables at the LHC and the future $e^+e^-$ colliders.

Extreme-Strike Asymptotics for General Gaussian Stochastic Volatility Models

We consider a stochastic volatility asset price model in which the volatility is the absolute value of a continuous Gaussian process with arbitrary prescribed mean and covariance. By exhibiting a Karhunen-Loève expansion for the integrated variance, and using sharp estimates of the density of a general second-chaos variable, we derive asymptotics for the asset price density for large or small values of the variable, and study the wing behavior of the implied volatility in these models. Our main result provides explicit expressions for the first five terms in the expansion of the implied volatility. The expressions for the leading three terms are simple, and based on three basic spectral-type statistics of the Gaussian process: the top eigenvalue of its covariance operator, the multiplicity of this eigenvalue, and the $L^{2}$ norm of the projection of the mean function on the top eigenspace. The fourth term requires knowledge of all eigen-elements. We present detailed numerics based on realistic liquidity assumptions in which classical and long-memory volatility models are calibrated based on our expansion.

The Continuity of the Gauge Fixing Condition $n\cdot\partial n\cdot A=0$ for $SU(2)$ Gauge Theory

The continuity of the gauge fixing condition $n\cdot\partial n\cdot A=0$ for $SU(2)$ gauge theory on the manifold $R\bigotimes S^{1}\bigotimes S^{1}\bigotimes S^{1}$ is studied here, where $n^μ$ stands for directional vector along $x_{i}$-axis($i=1,2,3$). It is proved that the gauge fixing condition is continuous given that gauge potentials are differentiable with continuous derivatives on the manifold $R\bigotimes S^{1}\bigotimes S^{1}\bigotimes S^{1}$ which is compact.

Redshift drift constraints on holographic dark energy

The Sandage-Loeb (SL) test is a promising method for probing dark energy because it measures the redshift drift in the spectra of Lyman-$α$ forest of distant quasars, covering the "redshift desert" of $2\lesssim z\lesssim5$, which is not covered by existing cosmological observations. Therefore, it could provide an important supplement to current cosmological observations. In this paper, we explore the impact of SL test on the precision of cosmological constraints for two typical holographic dark energy models, i.e., the original holographic dark energy (HDE) model and the Ricci holographic dark energy (RDE) model. To avoid data inconsistency, we use the best-fit models based on current combined observational data as the fiducial models to simulate 30 mock SL test data. The results show that SL test can effectively break the existing strong degeneracy between the present-day matter density $Ω_{m0}$ and the Hubble constant $H_0$ in other cosmological observations. For the considered two typical dark energy models, not only can a 30-year observation of SL test improve the constraint precision of $Ω_{m0}$ and $h$ dramatically, but can also enhance the constraint precision of the model parameters $c$ and $α$ significantly.

On the persistence of Hölder regular patches of density for the inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations

In our recent work dedicated to the Boussinesq equations [Danchin and Zhang 2016], we established the persistence of solutions with piecewise constant temperature along interfaces with Hölder regularity. We here address the same problem for the inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations satisfied by a viscous incompressibleand inhomogeneous fluid. We establish that, indeed, in the slightly inhomogeneous case, patches of densities with $\mathcal{C}^{1, \varepsilon}$ regularity propagate for all time. As in [Danchin and Zhang 2016], our result follows from the conservation of Hölder regularityalong vector fields moving with the flow. The proof of that latter result is based on commutator estimates involving para-vector fields, and multiplier spaces. The overall analysis is more complicated than in [Danchin and Zhang 2016] however, since the coupling between the mass and velocity equations in the inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations is \emph{quasilinear} while it is linear for the Boussinesq equations.

Comparison of dark energy models after Planck 2015

We make a comparison for ten typical, popular dark energy models according to their capabilities of fitting the current observational data. The observational data we use in this work include the JLA sample of type Ia supernovae observation, the Planck 2015 distance priors of cosmic microwave background observation, the baryon acoustic oscillations measurements, and the direct measurement of the Hubble constant. Since the models have different numbers of parameters, in order to make a fair comparison, we employ the Akaike and Bayesian information criteria to assess the worth of the models. The analysis results show that, according to the capability of explaining observations, the cosmological constant model is still the best one among all the dark energy models. The generalized Chaplygin gas model, the constant $w$ model, and the $α$ dark energy model are worse than the cosmological constant model, but still are good models compared to others. The holographic dark energy model, the new generalized Chaplygin gas model, and the Chevalliear-Polarski-Linder model can still fit the current observations well, but from an economically feasible perspective, they are not so good. The new agegraphic dark energy model, the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati model, and the Ricci dark energy model are excluded by the current observations.

Scaling of quantum correlation and monogamy relation near a quantum phase transitions in two-dimensional XY spin system

The purpose of the paper is mainly to investigate the quantum critical behavior of two-dimensional XY spin system by calculating quantum correlation and monogamy relation through implementation of quantum renormalization group theory. Numerical analysis indicates that quantum correlation as well as quantum nonlocality can be used to efficiently detect the quantum critical property in two-dimensional XY spin system. The nonanalytic behavior of the first derivative of quantum correlation approaches infinity and the critical point is reached as the size of the model increases. Furthermore, we discuss the quantum correlation distribution in this model based on square of concurrence (SC) and square of quantum discord (SQD). The monogamous properties of SC and SQD are obtained for the present system. We finally reveal that the monogamy score can be used to capture the quantum critical point.

Dark-like states for the multi-qubit and multi-photon Rabi models

There are well-known dark states in the even-qubit Dicke models, which are the products of the two-qubit singlets and a Fock state, where the qubits are decoupled from the photon field. These spin singlets can be used to store quantum correlations since they preserve entanglement even under dissipation, driving and dipole-dipole interactions. One of the features for these dark states is that their eigenenergies are independent of the qubitphoton coupling strength. We have obtained a novel kind of dark-like states for the multi-qubit and multi-photon Rabi models, whose eigenenergies are also constant in the whole coupling regime. Unlike the dark states, the qubits and photon field are coupled in the dark-like states. Furthermore, the photon numbers are bounded from above commonly at 1, which is different from that for the one-qubit case. The existence conditions of the dark-like states are simpler than exact isolated solutions, and may be fine tuned in experiments. While the single-qubit and multi-photon Rabi model is well-defined only if the photon number $M\leq2$ and the coupling strength is below a certain critical value, the dark-like eigenstates for multi-qubit and multiphoton Rabi model still exist, regardless of these constraints. In view of these properties of the dark-like states, they may find similar applications like "dark states" in quantum information.

Impacts of dark energy on weighing neutrinos: mass hierarchies considered

Taking into account the mass splittings between three active neutrinos, we investigate impacts of dark energy on constraining the total neutrino mass $\sum m_ν$ by using recent cosmological observations. We consider two typical dark energy models, namely, the $w$CDM model and the holographic dark energy (HDE) model, which both have an additional free parameter compared with the $Λ$CDM model. We employ the Planck 2015 data of CMB temperature and polarization anisotropies, combined with low-redshift measurements on BAO distance scales, type Ia supernovae, Hubble constant, and Planck lensing. Compared to the $Λ$CDM model, our study shows that the upper limit on $\sum m_ν$ becomes much looser in the $w$CDM model while much tighter in the HDE model. In the HDE model, we obtain the $95\%$ CL upper limit $\sum m_ν<0.105~\textrm{eV}$ for three degenerate neutrinos. This might be the most stringent constraint on $\sum m_ν$ by far and is almost on the verge of diagnosing the neutrino mass hierachies in the HDE model. However, the difference of $χ^2$ is still not significant enough to distinguish the neutrino mass hierarchies, even though the minimal $χ^2$ of the normal hierarchy is slightly smaller than that of the inverted hierarchy.

Terahertz-driven Luminescence and Colossal Stark Effect in CdSe:CdS Colloidal Quantum Dots

Unique optical properties of colloidal semiconductor quantum dots (QDs), arising from quantum mechanical confinement of charge within these structures, present a versatile testbed for the study of how high electric fields affect the electronic structure of nanostructured solids. Earlier studies of quasi-DC electric field modulation of QD properties have been limited by the electrostatic breakdown processes under the high externally applied electric fields, which have restricted the range of modulation of QD properties. In contrast, in the present work we drive CdSe:CdS core:shell QD films with high-field THz-frequency electromagnetic pulses whose duration is only a few picoseconds. Surprisingly, in response to the THz excitation we observe QD luminescence even in the absence of an external charge source. Our experiments show that QD luminescence is associated with a remarkably high and rapid modulation of the QD band-gap, which is changing by more than 0.5 eV (corresponding to 25% of the unperturbed bandgap energy) within the picosecond timeframe of THz field profile. We show that these colossal energy shifts can be consistently explained by the quantum confined Stark effect. Our work demonstrates a route to extreme modulation of material properties without configurational changes in material sets or geometries. Additionally, we expect that this platform can be adapted to a novel compact THz detection scheme where conversion of THz fields (with meV-scale photon energies) to the visible/near-IR band (with eV-scale photon energies) can be achieved at room temperature with high bandwidth and sensitivity.

Revisit of the interacting holographic dark energy model after Planck 2015

We investigate the observational constraints on the interacting holographic dark energy model. We consider five typical interacting models with the interaction terms $Q=3βHρ_{\rm{de}}$, $Q=3βHρ_{\rm{c}}$, $Q=3βH(ρ_{\rm{de}}+ρ_{\rm c})$, $Q=3βH\sqrt{ρ_{\rm{de}}ρ_{\rm c}}$, and $Q=3βH\frac{ρ_{\rm{de}}ρ_{c}}{ρ_{\rm{de}}+ρ_{\rm c}}$, respectively, where $β$ is a dimensionless coupling constant. The observational data we use in this paper include the JLA compilation of type Ia supernovae data, the Planck 2015 distance priors data of cosmic microwave background observation, the baryon acoustic oscillations measurements, and the Hubble constant direct measurement. We make a comparison for these five interacting holographic dark energy models by employing the information criteria, and we find that, within the framework of holographic dark energy, the $Q=3βH\frac{ρ_{\rm{de}}ρ_{\rm c}}{ρ_{\rm{ de}}+ρ_{\rm c}}$ model is most favored by current data, and the $Q=3βHρ_{\rm c}$ model is relatively not favored by current data. For the $Q=3βHρ_{\rm{de}}$ and $Q=3βH\frac{ρ_{\rm{de}}ρ_{\rm c}}{ρ_{\rm{ de}}+ρ_{\rm c}}$ models, a positive coupling $β$ can be detected at more than 2$σ$ significance.

Bethe States of the integrable spin-s chain with generic open boundaries

Based on the inhomogeneous T-Q relation and the associated Bethe Ansatz equations obtained via the off-diagonal Bethe Ansatz, we construct the Bethe-type eigenstates of the SU(2)-invariant spin-s chain with generic non-diagonal boundaries by employing certain orthogonal basis of the Hilbert space.

Revisiting the one leptoquark solution to the $R(D^{(\ast)})$ anomalies and its phenomenological implications

It has been shown recently that the anomalies observed in $\bar B\to D^{(\ast)}τ\barν_τ$ and $\bar B\to \bar K\ell^+\ell^-$ decays could be resolved with just one scalar leptoquark. Fitting to the current data on $R(D^{(\ast)})$ along with acceptable $q^2$ distributions in $\bar B\to D^{(\ast)}τ\barν_τ$ decays, four best-fit solutions for the operator coefficients have been found. In this paper, we explore the possibilities of how to discriminate these four solutions. Firstly, we find that two of them are already excluded by the decay $B_c^-\to τ^-\barν_τ$, because the predicted decay widths have already overshot the total width $Γ_{B_c}$. It is then found that the remaining two solutions result in two effective Hamiltonians governing $b\to c τ\barν_τ$ transition, which differ by a sign and enhance the absolute value of the coefficient of $\bar c_Lγ_μb_L\,\bar τ_Lγ^μ{ν_τ}_L$ operator by about $12\%$. However, they give nearly the same predictions as in the SM for the $D^\ast$ and $τ$ longitudinal polarizations as well as the lepton forward-backward asymmetries in $\bar B\to D^{(\ast)}τ\barν_τ$ decays. For the other observables like $\mathcal B(B_c^-\to τ^-\barν_τ)$, $\mathcal B(B_c^- \to γτ^-\barν_τ)$, $R_{D^{(\ast)}}(q^2)$, ${\rm d}\mathcal B(\bar B\to D^{(\ast)}τ\barν_τ)/{\rm d}q^2$ and $\mathcal B(\bar B\to X_cτ\barν_τ)$, on the other hand, the two solutions give sizable enhancements relative to the SM predictions. With measurement of $B_c^-\to τ^-\barν_τ$ at LHCb and refined measurements of observables in $\bar B\to D^{(\ast)}τ\barν_τ$ at both LHCb and Belle-II, such a specific NP scenario could be further deciphered.

Wireless transfer of power by a 35-GHz metamaterial split-ring resonator rectenna

Wireless transfer of power via high frequency microwave radiation using a miniature split ring resonator rectenna is reported. RF power is converted into DC power by integrating a rectification circuit with the split ring resonator. The near-field behavior of the rectenna is investigated with microwave radiation in the frequency range between 20-40 GHz with a maximum power level of 17 dBm. The observed resonance peaks match those predicted by simulation. Polarization studies show the expected maximum in signal when the electric field is polarized along the edge of the split ring resonator with the gap and minimum for perpendicular orientation. The efficiency of the rectenna is on the order of 1% for a frequency of 37.2 GHz. By using a cascading array of 9 split ring resonators the output power was increased by a factor of 20.

Blocking Collapsed Gibbs Sampler for Latent Dirichlet Allocation Models

The latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) model is a widely-used latent variable model in machine learning for text analysis. Inference for this model typically involves a single-site collapsed Gibbs sampling step for latent variables associated with observations. The efficiency of the sampling is critical to the success of the model in practical large scale applications. In this article, we introduce a blocking scheme to the collapsed Gibbs sampler for the LDA model which can, with a theoretical guarantee, improve chain mixing efficiency. We develop two procedures, an O(K)-step backward simulation and an O(log K)-step nested simulation, to directly sample the latent variables within each block. We demonstrate that the blocking scheme achieves substantial improvements in chain mixing compared to the state of the art single-site collapsed Gibbs sampler. We also show that when the number of topics is over hundreds, the nested-simulation blocking scheme can achieve a significant reduction in computation time compared to the single-site sampler.

Universal quantum correlation close to quantum critical phenomena

We study the ground state quantum correlation of Ising model in a transverse field (ITF) by implementing the quantum renormalization group (QRG) theory. It is shown that various quantum correlation measures and the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality will highlight the critical point related with quantum phase transitions, and demonstrate nonanalytic phenomena and scaling behavior when the size of the systems becomes large. Our results also indicate a universal behavior of the critical exponent of ITF under QRG theory that the critical exponent of different measures is identical, even when the quantities vary from entanglement measures to quantum correlation measures. This means that the two kinds of quantum correlation criterion including the entanglement-separability paradigm and the information-theoretic paradigm have some connections between them. These remarkable behaviors may have important implications on condensed matter physics because the critical exponent directly associates with the correlation length exponent.

End to End Learning for Self-Driving Cars

We trained a convolutional neural network (CNN) to map raw pixels from a single front-facing camera directly to steering commands. This end-to-end approach proved surprisingly powerful. With minimum training data from humans the system learns to drive in traffic on local roads with or without lane markings and on highways. It also operates in areas with unclear visual guidance such as in parking lots and on unpaved roads. The system automatically learns internal representations of the necessary processing steps such as detecting useful road features with only the human steering angle as the training signal. We never explicitly trained it to detect, for example, the outline of roads. Compared to explicit decomposition of the problem, such as lane marking detection, path planning, and control, our end-to-end system optimizes all processing steps simultaneously. We argue that this will eventually lead to better performance and smaller systems. Better performance will result because the internal components self-optimize to maximize overall system performance, instead of optimizing human-selected intermediate criteria, e.g., lane detection. Such criteria understandably are selected for ease of human interpretation which doesn't automatically guarantee maximum system performance. Smaller networks are possible because the system learns to solve the problem with the minimal number of processing steps. We used an NVIDIA DevBox and Torch 7 for training and an NVIDIA DRIVE(TM) PX self-driving car computer also running Torch 7 for determining where to drive. The system operates at 30 frames per second (FPS).
