k-forested choosability of graphs with bounded maximum average degree

A proper vertex coloring of a simple graph is $k$-forested if the graph induced by the vertices of any two color classes is a forest with maximum degree less than $k$. A graph is $k$-forested $q$-choosable if for a given list of $q$ colors associated with each vertex $v$, there exists a $k$-forested coloring of $G$ such that each vertex receives a color from its own list. In this paper, we prove that the $k$-forested choosability of a graph with maximum degree $Δ\geq k\geq 4$ is at most $\lceil\fracΔ{k-1}\rceil+1$, $\lceil\fracΔ{k-1}\rceil+2$ or $\lceil\fracΔ{k-1}\rceil+3$ if its maximum average degree is less than 12/5, $8/3 or 3, respectively.

Structural properties of 1-planar graphs and an application to acyclic edge coloring

A graph is called 1-planar if it can be drawn on the plane so that each edge is crossed by at most one other edge. In this paper, we establish a local property of 1-planar graphs which describes the structure in the neighborhood of small vertices (i.e. vertices of degree no more than seven). Meanwhile, some new classes of light graphs in 1-planar graphs with the bounded degree are found. Therefore, two open problems presented by Fabrici and Madaras [The structure of 1-planar graphs, Discrete Mathematics, 307, (2007), 854-865] are solved. Furthermore, we prove that each 1-planar graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ(G)$ is acyclically edge $L$-choosable where $L=\max\{2Δ(G)-2,Δ(G)+83\}$.

Frequency-tunable metamaterials using broadside-coupled split ring resonators

We present frequency tunable metamaterial designs at terahertz (THz) frequencies using broadside-coupled split ring resonator (BC-SRR) arrays. Frequency tuning, arising from changes in near field coupling, is obtained by in-plane horizontal or vertical displacements of the two SRR layers. For electrical excitation, the resonance frequency continuously redshifts as a function of displacement. The maximum frequency shift occurs for displacement of half a unit cell, with vertical displacement resulting in a shift of 663 GHz (51% of f0) and horizontal displacement yielding a shift of 270 GHz (20% of f0). We also discuss the significant differences in tuning that arise for electrical excitation in comparison to magnetic excitation of BC-SRRs.

Comparison of dark energy models: A perspective from the latest observational data

In this paper, we compare some popular dark energy models under the assumption of a flat universe by using the latest observational data including the type Ia supernovae Constitution compilation, the baryon acoustic oscillation measurement from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, the cosmic microwave background measurement given by the seven-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe observations and the determination of $H_0$ from the Hubble Space Telescope. Model comparison statistics such as the Bayesian and Akaike information criteria are applied to assess the worth of the models. These statistics favor models that give a good fit with fewer parameters. Based on this analysis, we find that the simplest cosmological constant model that has only one free parameter is still preferred by the current data. For other dynamical dark energy models, we find that some of them, such as the $α$ dark energy, constant $w$, generalized Chaplygin gas, Chevalliear-Polarski-Linder parametrization, and holographic dark energy models, can provide good fits to the current data, and three of them, namely, the Ricci dark energy, agegraphic dark energy, and Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati models, are clearly disfavored by the data.

Sandage-Loeb test for the new agegraphic and Ricci dark energy models

The Sandage-Loeb (SL) test is a unique method to explore dark energy at the ``redshift desert'' ($2\lesssim z\lesssim 5$), an era not covered by any other dark energy probes, by directly measuring the temporal variation of the redshift of quasar (QSO) Lyman-$α$ absorption lines. In this paper, we study the prospects for constraining the new agegraphic dark energy (NADE) model and the Ricci dark energy (RDE) model with the SL test. We show that, assuming only a ten-year survey, the SL test can constrain these two models with high significance.

Theoretical Limits on Agegraphic Quintessence from Weak Gravity Conjecture

In this paper, we investigate the possible theoretical constraint on the parameter $n$ of the agegraphic quintessence model by considering the requirement of the weak gravity conjecture that the variation of the quintessence scalar field $ϕ$ should be less than the Planck mass $M_{\rm{p}}$. We obtain the theoretical upper bound $n\lesssim 2.5$ that is inconsistent with the current observational constraint result $2.637<n<2.983$ (95.4% CL). The possible implications of the tension between observational and theoretical constraint results are discussed.

Automated sampling assessment for molecular simulations using the effective sample size

To quantify the progress in development of algorithms and forcefields used in molecular simulations, a method for the assessment of the sampling quality is needed. We propose a general method to assess the sampling quality through the estimation of the number of independent samples obtained from molecular simulations. This method is applicable to both dynamic and nondynamic methods and utilizes the variance in the populations of physical states to determine the ESS. We test the correctness and robustness of our procedure in a variety of systems--two-state toy model, all-atom butane, coarse-grained calmodulin, all-atom dileucine and Met-enkaphalin. We also introduce an automated procedure to obtain approximate physical states from dynamic trajectories: this procedure allows for sample--size estimation for systems for which physical states are not known in advance.

Interacting model of new agegraphic dark energy: Cosmological evolution and statefinder diagnostic

The statefinder diagnosic is a useful method for distinguishing different dark energy models. In this paper, we investigate the new agegraphic dark energy model with interaction between dark energy and matter component by using statefinder parameter pair $\{r, s\}$ and study its cosmological evolution. We plot the trajectories of the new agegraphic dark energy model for different interaction cases in the statefinder plane. As a result, the influence of the interaction on the evolution of the universe is shown in the statefinder diagrams.

Heal the world: Avoiding the cosmic doomsday in the holographic dark energy model

The current observational data imply that the universe would end with a cosmic doomsday in the holographic dark energy model. However, unfortunately, the big-rip singularity will ruin the theoretical foundation of the holographic dark energy scenario. To rescue the holographic scenario of dark energy, we employ the braneworld cosmology and incorporate the extra-dimension effects into the holographic theory of dark energy. We find that such a mend could erase the big-rip singularity and leads to a de Sitter finale for the holographic cosmos. Therefore, in the holographic dark energy model, the extra-dimension recipe could heal the world.

Probing interaction and spatial curvature in the holographic dark energy model

In this paper we place observational constraints on the interaction and spatial curvature in the holographic dark energy model. We consider three kinds of phenomenological interactions between holographic dark energy and matter, i.e., the interaction term $Q$ is proportional to the energy densities of dark energy ($ρ_Λ$), matter ($ρ_{m}$), and matter plus dark energy ($ρ_m+ρ_Λ$). For probing the interaction and spatial curvature in the holographic dark energy model, we use the latest observational data including the type Ia supernovae (SNIa) Constitution data, the shift parameter of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) given by the five-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP5) observations, and the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) measurement from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Our results show that the interaction and spatial curvature in the holographic dark energy model are both rather small. Besides, it is interesting to find that there exists significant degeneracy between the phenomenological interaction and the spatial curvature in the holographic dark energy model.

Holographic Ricci dark energy in Randall-Sundrum braneworld: Avoidance of big rip and steady state future

In the holographic Ricci dark energy (RDE) model, the parameter $α$ plays an important role in determining the evolutionary behavior of the dark energy. When $α<1/2$, the RDE will exhibit a quintom feature, i.e., the equation of state of dark energy will evolve across the cosmological constant boundary $w=-1$. Observations show that the parameter $α$ is indeed smaller than 1/2, so the late-time evolution of RDE will be really like a phantom energy. Therefore, it seems that the big rip is inevitable in this model. On the other hand, the big rip is actually inconsistent with the theoretical framework of the holographic model of dark energy. To avoid the big rip, we appeal to the extra dimension physics. In this Letter, we investigate the cosmological evolution of the RDE in the braneworld cosmology. It is of interest to find that for the far future evolution of RDE in a Randall-Sundrum braneworld, there is an attractor solution where the steady state (de Sitter) finale occurs, in stead of the big rip.

New Agegraphic Dark Energy in Brans-Dicke Theory

In this paper, we investigate the new agegraphic dark energy model in the framework of Brans-Dicke theory which is a natural extension of the Einstein's general relativity. In this framework the form of the new agegraphic dark energy density takes as $ρ_{q} =3n^2 Φ(t)η^{-2}$, where $η$ is the conformal age of the universe and $Φ(t)$ is the Brans-Dicke scalar field representing the inverse of the time-variable Newton's constant. We derive the equation of state of the new agegraphic dark energy and the deceleration parameter of the universe in the Brans-Dicke theory. It is very interesting to find that in the Brans-Dicke theory the agegraphic dark energy realizes quintom-like behavior, i.e., its equation of state crosses the phantom divide $w=-1$ during the evolution. We also compare the situation of the agegraphic dark energy model in the Brans-Dicke theory with that in the Einstein's theory. In addition, we discuss the new agegraphic dark energy model with interaction in the framework of the Brans-Dicke theory.

Constraints on Dark Matter Annihilation Cross Section in Scenarios of Brane-World and Quintessence

We investigate the dark matter annihilation in the brane-world and quintessence scenarios, in which the modified cosmological expansion rate can enhance the thermal relic density of dark matter. According to the observed dark matter abundance, we constrain the thermally averaged annihilation cross section <σv> in these two scenarios. In addition, the big bang nucleosynthesis and the partial-wave unitarity are also used to place bounds on <σv>. It is found that both scenarios can lead to a large annihilation cross section, so they can be used to explain the recent PAMELA, ATIC and PPB-BETS anomalies.

Holographic dark energy models: A comparison from the latest observational data

The holographic principle of quantum gravity theory has been applied to the dark energy (DE) problem, and so far three holographic DE models have been proposed: the original holographic dark energy (HDE) model, the agegraphic dark energy (ADE) model, and the holographic Ricci dark energy (RDE) model. In this work, we perform the best-fit analysis on these three models, by using the latest observational data including the Union+CFA3 sample of 397 Type Ia supernovae (SNIa), the shift parameter of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) given by the five-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP5) observations, and the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) measurement from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The analysis shows that for HDE, $χ_{min}^{2}=465.912$; for RDE, $χ_{min}^{2}=483.130$; for ADE, $χ_{min}^{2}=481.694$. Among these models, HDE model can give the smallest $χ^2_{min}$. Besides, we also use the Bayesian evidence (BE) as a model selection criterion to make a comparison. It is found that for HDE, ADE, and RDE, $Δ\ln \mathrm{BE}= -0.86$, -5.17, and -8.14, respectively. So, it seems that the HDE model is more favored by the observational data.

Holographic Ricci dark energy: Current observational constraints, quintom feature, and the reconstruction of scalar-field dark energy

In this work, we consider the cosmological constraints on the holographic Ricci dark energy proposed by Gao et al. [Phys. Rev. D 79, 043511 (2009)], by using the observational data currently available. The main characteristic of holographic Ricci dark energy is governed by a positive numerical parameter $α$ in the model. When $α<1/2$, the holographic Ricci dark energy will exhibit a quintomlike behavior; i.e., its equation of state will evolve across the cosmological-constant boundary $w=-1$. The parameter $α$ can be determined only by observations. Thus, in order to characterize the evolving feature of dark energy and to predict the fate of the universe, it is of extraordinary importance to constrain the parameter $α$ by using the observational data. In this paper, we derive constraints on the holographic Ricci dark energy model from the latest observational data including the Union sample of 307 type Ia supernovae, the shift parameter of the cosmic microwave background given by the five-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe observations, and the baryon acoustic oscillation measurement from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The joint analysis gives the best-fit results (with 1$σ$ uncertainty): $α=0.359^{+0.024}_{-0.025}$ and $Ω_{\rm m0}=0.318^{+0.026}_{-0.024}$. That is to say, according to the observations, the holographic Ricci dark energy takes on the quintom feature. Finally, in light of the results of the cosmological constraints, we discuss the issue of the scalar-field dark energy reconstruction, based on the scenario of the holographic Ricci vacuum energy.

Local Inertial Coordinate System and The Principle of Equivalence

In this paper, the local inertial coordinate system is calculated through coordinate transformations from laboratory coordinate system. We derived the same free falling equations as those in General Relativity. However, the definitions of second and higher order covariant derivatives are different. Our results are different from the classic view of the principle of equivalence, and suggest that all the laws of physics in gravitational field can be given by doing coordinate transformations from local inertial coordinate system to lab coordinate system.

Can black holes be torn up by phantom dark energy in cyclic cosmology?

Infinitely cyclic cosmology is often frustrated by the black hole problem. It has been speculated that this obstacle in cyclic cosmology can be removed by taking into account a peculiar cyclic model derived from loop quantum cosmology or the braneworld scenario, in which phantom dark energy plays a crucial role. In this peculiar cyclic model, the mechanism of solving the black hole problem is through tearing up black holes by phantom. However, using the theory of fluid accretion onto black holes, we show in this paper that there exists another possibility: that black holes cannot be torn up by phantom in this cyclic model. We discussed this possibility and showed that the masses of black holes might first decrease and then increase, through phantom accretion onto black holes in the expanding stage of the cyclic universe.
