Bandgap narrowing in Mn doped GaAs probed by room-temperature photoluminescence

The electronic band structure of the (Ga,Mn)As system has been one of the most intriguing problems in solid state physics over the past two decades. Determination of the band structure evolution with increasing Mn concentration is a key issue to understand the origin of ferromagnetism. Here we present room temperature photoluminescence and ellipsometry measurements of Ga_{100%-x}Mn_{x}As alloy. The up-shift of the valence-band is proven by the red shift of the room temperature near band gap emission from the Ga_{100%-x}Mn_{x}As alloy with increasing Mn content. It is shown that even a doping by 0.02 at.% of Mn affects the valence-band edge and it merges with the impurity band for a Mn concentration as low as 0.6 at.%. Both X-ray diffraction pattern and high resolution cross-sectional TEM images confirmed full recrystallization of the implanted layer and GaMnAs alloy formation.

Active mode locking of quantum cascade lasers operating in external ring cavity

Stable ultrashort light pulses and frequency combs generated by mode-locked lasers have many important applications including high-resolution spectroscopy, fast chemical detection and identification, studies of ultrafast processes, and laser metrology. While compact mode-locked lasers emitting in the visible and near infrared range have revolutionized photonic technologies, the systems operating in the mid-infrared range where most gases have their strong absorption lines, are bulky and expensive and rely on nonlinear frequency down-conversion. Quantum cascade lasers are the most powerful and versatile compact light sources in the mid-infrared range, yet achieving their mode locked operation remains a challenge despite dedicated effort. Here we report the first demonstration of active mode locking of an external-cavity quantum cascade laser. The laser operates in the mode-locked regime at room temperature and over the full dynamic range of injection currents of a standard commercial laser chip.

Magnetic anisotropy of polycrystalline high-temperature ferromagnetic Mn$_x$Si$_{1-x}$ ($x\approx0.5$) alloy films

A set of thin film Mn$_x$Si$_{1-x}$ alloy samples with different manganese concentration x = 0.44 - 0.63 grown by the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method onto the Al$_2$O$_3$(0001) substrate was investigated in the temperature range 4 - 300 K using ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) measurements in the wide range of frequencies (f = 7 - 60 GHz) and magnetic fields (H = 0 - 30 kOe). For samples with x = 0.52 - 0.55, FMR data show clear evidence of ferromagnetism with high Curie temperatures T$_\text{C}$ ~ 300 K. These samples demonstrate complex and unusual character of magnetic anisotropy described in the frame of phenomenological model as a combination of the essential second order easy plane anisotropy contribution and the additional forth order uniaxial anisotropy contribution with easy direction normal to the film plane. We explain the obtained results by a polycrystalline (mosaic) structure of the films caused by the film-substrate lattice mismatch. The existence of extra strains at the crystallite boundaries leads to an essential inhomogeneous magnetic anisotropy in the film plane.

Grain-size dependent high-temperature ferromagnetism of polycrystalline MnxSi1-x (x~0.5) films

We present the results of a comprehensive study of magnetic, magneto-transport and structural properties of nonstoichiometric MnxSi1-x (x=0.51-0.52) films grown by the Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) technique onto Al2O3(0001) single crystal substrates at T = 340°C. A highlight of our PLD method is the using of non-conventional (shadow) geometry with Kr as a scattering gas during the sample growth. It is found that studied films exhibit high-temperature (HT) ferromagnetism (FM) with the Curie temperature TC ~ 370 K accompanied by positive sign anomalous Hall effect (AHE); they also reveal the layered polycrystalline structure with a self-organizing grain size distribution. The HT FM order is originated from the bottom interfacial nanocrystalline layer, while the upper layer possesses the low temperature (LT) type of FM order with TC = 46 K, gives essential contribution to the magnetization below 50 K and is homogeneous on the nanometer size scale. Under these conditions, AHE changes its sign from positive to negative at T < 30 K. We attribute observed properties to the synergy of self-organizing distribution of MnxSi1-x crystallites in size and peculiarities of defect-induced FM order in PLD grown polycrystalline MnxSi1-x (x~0.5) films.

New spin injection scheme based on spin gapless semiconductors: A first-principles study

Spin injection efficiency based on conventional and/or half-metallic ferromagnet/semiconductor is greatly limited by the Schmidt obstacle due to conductivity mismatch, here we proposed that by replacing the metallic injectors with spin gapless semiconductors can significantly reduce the conductive mismatch to enhance spin injection efficiency. By performing first principles calculations based on superlattice structure, we have studied the representative system of Mn2CoAl/semiconductor spin injector scheme. The results showed that a high spin polarization was maintained at the interface in systems of Mn2CoAl/Fe2VAl constructed with (100) interface and Mn2CoAl/GaAs with (110) interface, and the latter is expected to possess long spin diffusion length. Inherited from the spin gapless feature of Mn2CoAl, a pronounced dip was observed around the Fermi level in the majority-spin density-of-states in both systems, suggesting fast transport of the low-density carriers.

Pi Berry phase and Zeeman splitting of TaP probed by high field magnetotransport measurements

The chiral anomaly-induced negative magnetoresistance and non-trivial Berry phase are two fundamental transport properties associated with the topological properties of Weyl fermions. In this work, we report the quantum transport of TaP single crystals in magnetic field up to 31T. Through the analyses of our magnetotransport data, we show TaP has the signatures of a Weyl state, including light effective quasiparticle masses, ultrahigh carrier mobility, as well as negative longitudinal magnetoresistance. Furthermore, we have generalized the Lifshitz-Kosevich formula for Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations with multi-frequencies, and determined the non-trivial Berry phase of Pi for multiple Fermi pockets in TaP through the direct fitting of the quantum oscillations. In high fields, we also probed signatures of Zeeman splitting, from which the Landé g-factor is extracted.

A comprehensive study of the open cluster NGC 6866

We present CCD $UBVRI$ photometry of the field of the open cluster NGC 6866. Structural parameters of the cluster are determined utilizing the stellar density profile of the stars in the field. We calculate the probabilities of the stars being a physical member of the cluster using their astrometric data and perform further analyses using only the most probable members. The reddening and metallicity of the cluster were determined by independent methods. The LAMOST spectra and the ultraviolet excess of the F and G type main-sequence stars in the cluster indicate that the metallicity of the cluster is about the solar value. We estimated the reddening $E(B-V)=0.074 \pm 0.050$ mag using the $U-B$ vs $B-V$ two-colour diagram. The distance modula, the distance and the age of NGC 6866 were derived as $μ= 10.60 \pm 0.10$ mag, $d=1189 \pm 75$ pc and $t = 813 \pm 50$ Myr, respectively, by fitting colour-magnitude diagrams of the cluster with the PARSEC isochrones. The Galactic orbit of NGC 6866 indicates that the cluster is orbiting in a slightly eccentric orbit with $e=0.12$. The mass function slope $x=1.35 \pm 0.08$ was derived by using the most probable members of the cluster.

Effect of Covalent Functionalisation on Thermal Transport Across Graphene-Polymer Interfaces

This paper is concerned with the interfacial thermal resistance for polymer composites reinforced by various covalently functionalised graphene. By using molecular dynamics simulations, the obtained results show that the covalent functionalisation in graphene plays a significant role in reducing the graphene-paraffin interfacial thermal resistance. This reduction is dependent on the coverage and type of functional groups. Among the various functional groups, butyl is found to be the most effective in reducing the interfacial thermal resistance, followed by methyl, phenyl and formyl. The other functional groups under consideration such as carboxyl, hydroxyl and amines are found to produce negligible reduction in the interfacial thermal resistance. For multilayer graphene with a layer number up to four, the interfacial thermal resistance is insensitive to the layer number. The effects of the different functional groups and the layer number on the interfacial thermal resistance are also elaborated using the vibrational density of states of the graphene and the paraffin matrix. The present findings provide useful guidelines in the application of functionalised graphene for practical thermal management.

The disk-outflow system in the S255IR area of high mass star formation

We report the results of our observations of the S255IR area with the SMA at 1.3 mm in the very extended configuration and at 0.8 mm in the compact configuration as well as with the IRAM-30m at 0.8 mm. The best achieved angular resolution is about 0.4 arcsec. The dust continuum emission and several tens of molecular spectral lines are observed. The majority of the lines is detected only towards the S255IR-SMA1 clump, which represents a rotating structure (probably disk) around the young massive star. The achieved angular resolution is still insufficient for conclusions about Keplerian or non-Keplerian character of the rotation. The temperature of the molecular gas reaches 130-180 K. The size of the clump is about 500 AU. The clump is strongly fragmented as follows from the low beam filling factor. The mass of the hot gas is significantly lower than the mass of the central star. A strong DCN emission near the center of the hot core most probably indicates a presence of a relatively cold ($\lesssim 80$ K) and rather massive clump there. High velocity emission is observed in the CO line as well as in lines of high density tracers HCN, HCO+, CS and other molecules. The outflow morphology obtained from combination of the SMA and IRAM-30m data is significantly different from that derived from the SMA data alone. The CO emission detected with the SMA traces only one boundary of the outflow. The outflow is most probably driven by jet bow shocks created by episodic ejections from the center. We detected a dense high velocity clump associated apparently with one of the bow shocks. The outflow strongly affects the chemical composition of the surrounding medium.

Simulations of a gradual solar energetic particle event observed by Helios 1, Helios 2, and IMP 8

In this work, a gradual solar energetic particle (SEP) event observed by multispacecraft has been simulated. The time profiles of SEP fluxes accelerated by an interplanetary shock in the three-dimensional interplanetary space are obtained by solving numerically the Fokker-Planck focused transport equation. The interplanetary shock is modeled as a moving source of energetic particles. By fitting the 1979/03/01 SEP fluxes observed by Helios 1, Helios 2, and IMP 8 with our simulations, we obtain the best parameters for the shock acceleration efficiency model. And we also find that the particle perpendicular diffusion coefficient with the level of $ \sim 1\% - 3\% $ of parallel diffusion coefficient at 1 AU should be included. The reservoir phenomenon is reproduced in the simulations, and the longitudinal gradient of SEP fluxes in the decay phase, which is observed by three spacecraft at different locations, is more sensitive to the shock acceleration efficiency parameters than that is to the perpendicular diffusion coefficient.

GRB 140619B: a short GRB from a binary neutron star merger leading to black hole formation

We show the existence of two families of short GRBs, both originating from the merger of binary neutron stars (NSs): family-1 with $E_{iso}<10^{52}$ erg, leading to a massive NS as the merged core, and family-2 with $E_{iso}>10^{52}$ erg, leading to a black hole (BH). Following the identification of the prototype GRB 090227B, we present the details of a new example of family-2 short burst: GRB 140619B. From the spectral analysis of the early $\sim0.2$ s, we infer an observed temperature $kT =(324\pm33)$ keV of the $e^+e^-$-plasma at transparency (P-GRB), a theoretically derived redshift $z=2.67\pm0.37$, a total burst energy $E^{tot}_{e^+e^-}=(6.03\pm0.79)\times10^{52}$ erg, a rest-frame peak energy $E_{p,i}=4.7$ MeV, and a baryon load $B=(5.52\pm0.73)\times10^{-5}$. We also estimate the corresponding emission of gravitational waves. Two additional examples of family-2 short bursts are identified: GRB 081024B and GRB 090510, remarkable for its well determined cosmological distance. We show that marked differences exist in the nature of the afterglows of these two families of short bursts: family-2 bursts, leading to BH formation, consistently exhibit high energy emission following the P-GRB emission; family-1 bursts, leading to the formation of a massive NS, should never exhibit high energy emission. We also show that both the families fulfill an $E_{p,i}$--$E_{iso}$ relation with slope $γ=0.59\pm0.07$ and a normalization constant incompatible with the one for long GRBs. The observed rate of such family-2 events is $ρ_0=\left(2.1^{+2.8}_{-1.4}\right)\times10^{-4}$Gpc$^{-3}$yr$^{-1}$.

An independent test of the photometric selection of white dwarf candidates using LAMOST DR3

In Gentile Fusillo et al. (2015) we developed a selection method for white dwarf candidates which makes use of photometry, colours and proper motions to calculate a probability of being a white dwarf (Pwd). The application of our method to the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data release 10 resulted in nearly 66,000 photometrically selected objects with a derived Pwd, approximately 21000 of which are high confidence white dwarf candidates. Here we present an independent test of our selection method based on a sample of spectroscopically confirmed white dwarfs from the LAMOST (Large Sky Area Multi-Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope) survey. We do this by cross matching all our $\sim$66,000 SDSS photometric white dwarf candidates with the over 4 million spectra available in the third data release of LAMOST. This results in 1673 white dwarf candidates with no previous SDSS spectroscopy, but with available LAMOST spectra. Among these objects we identify 309 genuine white dwarfs. We find that our Pwd can efficiently discriminate between confirmed LAMOST white dwarfs and contaminants. Our white dwarf candidate selection method can be applied to any multi-band photometric survey and in this work we conclusively confirm its reliability in selecting white dwarfs without recourse to spectroscopy. We also discuss the spectroscopic completeness of white dwarfs in LAMOST, as well as deriving effective temperatures, surface gravities and masses for the hydrogen-rich atmosphere white dwarfs in the newly identified LAMOST sample.

High Curie temperature and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in homoepitaxial InMnAs films

We have prepared the dilute magnetic semiconductor (DMS) InMnAs with different Mn concentrations by ion implantation and pulsed laser melting. The Curie temperature of the In1-xMnxAs epilayer depends on the Mn concentration x, reaching 82 K for x=0.105. The substitution of Mn ions at the Indium sites induces a compressive strain perpendicular to the InMnAs layer and a tensile strain along the in-plane direction. This gives rise to a large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, which is often needed for the demonstration of electrical control of magnetization and for spin-transfer-torque induced magnetization reversal.

Testing Hadronic Interaction Models using a Highly Granular Silicon-Tungsten Calorimeter

A detailed study of hadronic interactions is presented using data recorded with the highly granular CALICE silicon-tungsten electromagnetic calorimeter. Approximately 350,000 selected negatively charged pion events at energies between 2 and 10 GeV have been studied. The predictions of several physics models available within the Geant4 simulation tool kit are compared to this data. A reasonable overall description of the data is observed; the Monte Carlo predictions are within 20% of the data, and for many observables much closer. The largest quantitative discrepancies are found in the longitudinal and transverse distributions of reconstructed energy.

Fidelity Study of Superconductivity in Extended Hubbard Models

The Hubbard model with local on-site repulsion is generally thought to possess a superconducting ground-state for appropriate parameters, but the effects of more realistic long-range Coulomb interactions have not been studied extensively. We study the influence of these interactions on superconductivity by including nearest and next-nearest neighbor extended Hubbard interactions in addition to the usual on-site terms. Utilizing numerical exact diagonalization, we analyze the signatures of superconductivity in the ground states through the fidelity metric of quantum information theory. We find that nearest and next-nearest neighbor interactions have thresholds above which they destabilize superconductivity regardless of whether they are attractive or repulsive, seemingly due to competing charge fluctuations.

Coherent water transport across the South Atlantic

The role of mesoscale eddies in transporting Agulhas leakage is investigated using a recent technique from nonlinear dynamical systems theory applied on geostrophic currents inferred from the over two-decade-long satellite altimetry record. Eddies are found to acquire material coherence away from the Agulhas retroflection, near the Walvis Ridge in the South Atlantic. Yearly, 1 to 4 coherent material eddies are detected with diameters ranging from 40 to 280 km. A total of 23 eddy cores of about 50 km in diameter and with at least 30\pct of their contents traceable into the Indian Ocean were found to travel across the subtropical gyre with minor filamentation. Only 1 eddy core was found to pour its contents on the North Brazil Current. While ability of eddies to carry Agulhas leakage northwestward across the South Atlantic is supported by our analysis, this is more restricted than suggested by earlier ring transport assessments.

Ab initio calculations of the structural, electronic and elastic properties of the MZN2 (M=Be, Mg; Z=C, Si) chalcopyrite semiconductors

Four ternary semiconductors with the chalcopyrite structure (BeCN2, BeSiN2, MgCN2, and MgSiN2) were studied using the first principles methods. The structural, electronic, optical and elastic properties were calculated. All these materials were found to be the indirect band gap semiconductors, with the calculated band gaps in the range from 3.46 eV to 3.88 eV. Comparison of the degree of covalency/ionicity of the chemical bonds in these compounds was performed. Anisotropy of the optical properties of these tetragonal crystals was demonstrated by calculating the real and imaginary parts of the dielectric function ε. Anisotropy of the elastic properties of these materials was analyzed by plotting the three-dimensional dependences of the Young moduli and their two-dimensional cross-sections. It was also shown (at least, qualitatively) that there exists a correlation between the optical and elastic anisotropy: the most optically anisotropic MgSiN2 is also most elastically anisotropic material in the considered group. High hardness (bulk moduli up to 300 GPa) together with large band gaps may lead to new potential applications of these compounds.

A precision measurement of the $p$($e,e^\prime p\,$)$π^0$ reaction at threshold

New results are reported from a measurement of $π^0$ electroproduction near threshold using the $p(e,e^{\prime} p)π^0$ reaction. The experiment was designed to determine precisely the energy dependence of $s-$ and $p-$wave electromagnetic multipoles as a stringent test of the predictions of Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT). The data were taken with an electron beam energy of 1192 MeV using a two-spectrometer setup in Hall A at Jefferson Lab. For the first time, complete coverage of the $ϕ^*_π$ and $θ^*_π$ angles in the $p π^0$ center-of-mass was obtained for invariant energies above threshold from 0.5 MeV up to 15 MeV. The 4-momentum transfer $Q^2$ coverage ranges from 0.05 to 0.155 (GeV/c)$^2$ in fine steps. A simple phenomenological analysis of our data shows strong disagreement with $p-$wave predictions from ChPT for $Q^2>0.07$ (GeV/c)$^2$, while the $s-$wave predictions are in reasonable agreement.
