A Tutorial Introduction to Lattice-based Cryptography and Homomorphic Encryption

Why study Lattice-based Cryptography? There are a few ways to answer this question. 1. It is useful to have cryptosystems that are based on a variety of hard computational problems so the different cryptosystems are not all vulnerable in the same way. 2. The computational aspects of lattice-based cryptosystem are usually simple to understand and fairly easy to implement in practice. 3. Lattice-based cryptosystems have lower encryption/decryption computational complexities compared to popular cryptosystems that are based on the integer factorisation or the discrete logarithm problems. 4. Lattice-based cryptosystems enjoy strong worst-case hardness security proofs based on approximate versions of known NP-hard lattice problems. 5. Lattice-based cryptosystems are believed to be good candidates for post-quantum cryptography, since there are currently no known quantum algorithms for solving lattice problems that perform significantly better than the best-known classical (non-quantum) algorithms, unlike for integer factorisation and (elliptic curve) discrete logarithm problems. 6. Last but not least, interesting structures in lattice problems have led to significant advances in Homomorphic Encryption, a new research area with wide-ranging applications.

Controlling mean exit time of stochastic dynamical systems based on quasipotential and machine learning

The mean exit time escaping basin of attraction in the presence of white noise is of practical importance in various scientific fields. In this work, we propose a strategy to control mean exit time of general stochastic dynamical systems to achieve a desired value based on the quasipotential concept and machine learning. Specifically, we develop a neural network architecture to compute the global quasipotential function. Then we design a systematic iterated numerical algorithm to calculate the controller for a given mean exit time. Moreover, we identify the most probable path between metastable attractors with help of the effective Hamilton-Jacobi scheme and the trained neural network. Numerical experiments demonstrate that our control strategy is effective and sufficiently accurate.

Optimal dispatch of low-carbon integrated energy system considering nuclear heating and carbon trading

The development of miniaturized nuclear power (NP) units and the improvement of the carbon trading market provide a new way to realize the low-carbon operation of integrated energy systems (IES). In this study, NP units and carbon trading mechanisms are introduced into the IES to build a new low-carbon scheduling model. In view of the decrease in system operation flexibility caused by the introduction of NP unit, on the one hand, the heating renovation of the NP unit is carried out to make it a cogeneration unit, to expand its operating range and improve its operating flexibility; on the other hand, auxiliary equipment such as electricity storage system, heat storage system and power to gas unit, which can carry out energy time translation or energy form conversion, are introduced into IES to jointly improve the flexibility of system operation. In the model-solving stage, the chance-constrained programming (CCP) model considering the uncertainty of the renewable energy (RE) output is converted into an equivalent mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model using discretized step transformation. The test system built based on real data of an IES in North China shows that the proposed method has good economic and low-carbon environmental protection benefits.

IRS Assisted NOMA Aided Mobile Edge Computing with Queue Stability: Heterogeneous Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning

By employing powerful edge servers for data processing, mobile edge computing (MEC) has been recognized as a promising technology to support emerging computation-intensive applications. Besides, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA)-aided MEC system can further enhance the spectral-efficiency with massive tasks offloading. However, with more dynamic devices brought online and the uncontrollable stochastic channel environment, it is even desirable to deploy appealing technique, i.e., intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS), in the MEC system to flexibly tune the communication environment and improve the system energy efficiency. In this paper, we investigate the joint offloading, communication and computation resource allocation for IRS-assisted NOMA MEC system. We firstly formulate a mixed integer energy efficiency maximization problem with system queue stability constraint. We then propose the Lyapunov-function-based Mixed Integer Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (LMIDDPG) algorithm which is based on the centralized reinforcement learning (RL) framework. To be specific, we design the mixed integer action space mapping which contains both continuous mapping and integer mapping. Moreover, the award function is defined as the upper-bound of the Lyapunov drift-plus-penalty function. To enable end devices (EDs) to choose actions independently at the execution stage, we further propose the Heterogeneous Multi-agent LMIDDPG (HMA-LMIDDPG) algorithm based on distributed RL framework with homogeneous EDs and heterogeneous base station (BS) as heterogeneous multi-agent. Numerical results show that our proposed algorithms can achieve superior energy efficiency performance to the benchmark algorithms while maintaining the queue stability. Specially, the distributed structure HMA-LMIDDPG can acquire more energy efficiency gain than centralized structure LMIDDPG.

On MDS Codes With Galois Hulls of Arbitrary Dimensions

The Galois hulls of linear codes are a generalization of the Euclidean and Hermitian hulls of linear codes. In this paper, we study the Galois hulls of (extended) GRS codes and present several new constructions of MDS codes with Galois hulls of arbitrary dimensions via (extended) GRS codes. Two general methods of constructing MDS codes with Galois hulls of arbitrary dimensions by Hermitian or general Galois self-orthogonal (extended) GRS codes are given. Using these methods, some MDS codes with larger dimensions and Galois hulls of arbitrary dimensions can be obtained and relatively strict conditions can also lead to many new classes of MDS codes with Galois hulls of arbitrary dimensions.

SDFE-LV: A Large-Scale, Multi-Source, and Unconstrained Database for Spotting Dynamic Facial Expressions in Long Videos

In this paper, we present a large-scale, multi-source, and unconstrained database called SDFE-LV for spotting the onset and offset frames of a complete dynamic facial expression from long videos, which is known as the topic of dynamic facial expression spotting (DFES) and a vital prior step for lots of facial expression analysis tasks. Specifically, SDFE-LV consists of 1,191 long videos, each of which contains one or more complete dynamic facial expressions. Moreover, each complete dynamic facial expression in its corresponding long video was independently labeled for five times by 10 well-trained annotators. To the best of our knowledge, SDFE-LV is the first unconstrained large-scale database for the DFES task whose long videos are collected from multiple real-world/closely real-world media sources, e.g., TV interviews, documentaries, movies, and we-media short videos. Therefore, DFES tasks on SDFE-LV database will encounter numerous difficulties in practice such as head posture changes, occlusions, and illumination. We also provided a comprehensive benchmark evaluation from different angles by using lots of recent state-of-the-art deep spotting methods and hence researchers interested in DFES can quickly and easily get started. Finally, with the deep discussions on the experimental evaluation results, we attempt to point out several meaningful directions to deal with DFES tasks and hope that DFES can be better advanced in the future. In addition, SDFE-LV will be freely released for academic use only as soon as possible.

Nucleon spin decomposition with one dynamical gluon

We solve for the light-front wave functions of the nucleon from a light-front quantum chromodynamics (QCD) effective Hamiltonian with three-dimensional confinement. We obtain solutions using constituent three quarks combined with three quarks and one gluon Fock components. The resulting light-front wave functions provide a good quality description of the nucleon's quark distribution functions following QCD scale evolution. We present the effects from incorporating a dynamical gluon on the nucleon's gluon densities, helicity distribution and orbital angular momentum that constitutes the nucleon spin sum rule.

Alpha-particle generation from H-11B fusion initiated by laser-accelerated boron ions

Here we report the generation of MeV alpha-particles from H-11B fusion initiated by laser-accelerated boron ions. Boron ions with maximum energy of 6MeV and fluence of 10^9/MeV/sr@5MeV were generated from 60-nm-thick self-supporting boron nanofoils irradiated by 1J femtosecond pulses at an intensity of 10^19W/cm^2. By bombarding secondary hydrogenous targets with the boron ions, 3*10^5/sr alpha-particles from H-11B fusion were registered, which is consistent with the theoretical yield calculated from the measured boron energy spectra. Our results demonstrate an alternative way toward ultrashort MeV alpha-particle sources employing compact femtosecond lasers. The ion acceleration and product measurement scheme are referential for the studies on the ion stopping power and cross-section of the H-11B reaction in solid or plasma.

Neuromorphic computing using wavelength-division multiplexing

Optical neural networks (ONNs), or optical neuromorphic hardware accelerators, have the potential to dramatically enhance the computing power and energy efficiency of mainstream electronic processors, due to their ultralarge bandwidths of up to 10s of terahertz together with their analog architecture that avoids the need for reading and writing data back and forth. Different multiplexing techniques have been employed to demonstrate ONNs, amongst which wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) techniques make sufficient use of the unique advantages of optics in terms of broad bandwidths. Here, we review recent advances in WDM based ONNs, focusing on methods that use integrated microcombs to implement ONNs. We present results for human image processing using an optical convolution accelerator operating at 11 Tera operations per second. The open challenges and limitations of ONNs that need to be addressed for future applications are also discussed.

Detection of False Data Injection Attacks in Smart Grid: A Secure Federated Deep Learning Approach

As an important cyber-physical system (CPS), smart grid is highly vulnerable to cyber attacks. Amongst various types of attacks, false data injection attack (FDIA) proves to be one of the top-priority cyber-related issues and has received increasing attention in recent years. However, so far little attention has been paid to privacy preservation issues in the detection of FDIAs in smart grid. Inspired by federated learning, a FDIA detection method based on secure federated deep learning is proposed in this paper by combining Transformer, federated learning and Paillier cryptosystem. The Transformer, as a detector deployed in edge nodes, delves deep into the connection between individual electrical quantities by using its multi-head self-attention mechanism. By using federated learning framework, our approach utilizes the data from all nodes to collaboratively train a detection model while preserving data privacy by keeping the data locally during training. To improve the security of federated learning, a secure federated learning scheme is designed by combing Paillier cryptosystem with federated learning. Through extensive experiments on the IEEE 14-bus and 118-bus test systems, the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method are verifed.

Video-based Cross-modal Auxiliary Network for Multimodal Sentiment Analysis

Multimodal sentiment analysis has a wide range of applications due to its information complementarity in multimodal interactions. Previous works focus more on investigating efficient joint representations, but they rarely consider the insufficient unimodal features extraction and data redundancy of multimodal fusion. In this paper, a Video-based Cross-modal Auxiliary Network (VCAN) is proposed, which is comprised of an audio features map module and a cross-modal selection module. The first module is designed to substantially increase feature diversity in audio feature extraction, aiming to improve classification accuracy by providing more comprehensive acoustic representations. To empower the model to handle redundant visual features, the second module is addressed to efficiently filter the redundant visual frames during integrating audiovisual data. Moreover, a classifier group consisting of several image classification networks is introduced to predict sentiment polarities and emotion categories. Extensive experimental results on RAVDESS, CMU-MOSI, and CMU-MOSEI benchmarks indicate that VCAN is significantly superior to the state-of-the-art methods for improving the classification accuracy of multimodal sentiment analysis.

GCNs-Net: A Graph Convolutional Neural Network Approach for Decoding Time-resolved EEG Motor Imagery Signals

Towards developing effective and efficient brain-computer interface (BCI) systems, precise decoding of brain activity measured by electroencephalogram (EEG), is highly demanded. Traditional works classify EEG signals without considering the topological relationship among electrodes. However, neuroscience research has increasingly emphasized network patterns of brain dynamics. Thus, the Euclidean structure of electrodes might not adequately reflect the interaction between signals. To fill the gap, a novel deep learning framework based on the graph convolutional neural networks (GCNs) is presented to enhance the decoding performance of raw EEG signals during different types of motor imagery (MI) tasks while cooperating with the functional topological relationship of electrodes. Based on the absolute Pearson's matrix of overall signals, the graph Laplacian of EEG electrodes is built up. The GCNs-Net constructed by graph convolutional layers learns the generalized features. The followed pooling layers reduce dimensionality, and the fully-connected softmax layer derives the final prediction. The introduced approach has been shown to converge for both personalized and group-wise predictions. It has achieved the highest averaged accuracy, 93.06% and 88.57% (PhysioNet Dataset), 96.24% and 80.89% (High Gamma Dataset), at the subject and group level, respectively, compared with existing studies, which suggests adaptability and robustness to individual variability. Moreover, the performance is stably reproducible among repetitive experiments for cross-validation. The excellent performance of our method has shown that it is an important step towards better BCI approaches. To conclude, the GCNs-Net filters EEG signals based on the functional topological relationship, which manages to decode relevant features for brain motor imagery.

Distance-Aware Occlusion Detection with Focused Attention

For humans, understanding the relationships between objects using visual signals is intuitive. For artificial intelligence, however, this task remains challenging. Researchers have made significant progress studying semantic relationship detection, such as human-object interaction detection and visual relationship detection. We take the study of visual relationships a step further from semantic to geometric. In specific, we predict relative occlusion and relative distance relationships. However, detecting these relationships from a single image is challenging. Enforcing focused attention to task-specific regions plays a critical role in successfully detecting these relationships. In this work, (1) we propose a novel three-decoder architecture as the infrastructure for focused attention; 2) we use the generalized intersection box prediction task to effectively guide our model to focus on occlusion-specific regions; 3) our model achieves a new state-of-the-art performance on distance-aware relationship detection. Specifically, our model increases the distance F1-score from 33.8% to 38.6% and boosts the occlusion F1-score from 34.4% to 41.2%. Our code is publicly available.

GraphTTA: Test Time Adaptation on Graph Neural Networks

Recently, test time adaptation (TTA) has attracted increasing attention due to its power of handling the distribution shift issue in the real world. Unlike what has been developed for convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for image data, TTA is less explored for Graph Neural Networks (GNNs). There is still a lack of efficient algorithms tailored for graphs with irregular structures. In this paper, we present a novel test time adaptation strategy named Graph Adversarial Pseudo Group Contrast (GAPGC), for graph neural networks TTA, to better adapt to the Out Of Distribution (OOD) test data. Specifically, GAPGC employs a contrastive learning variant as a self-supervised task during TTA, equipped with Adversarial Learnable Augmenter and Group Pseudo-Positive Samples to enhance the relevance between the self-supervised task and the main task, boosting the performance of the main task. Furthermore, we provide theoretical evidence that GAPGC can extract minimal sufficient information for the main task from information theory perspective. Extensive experiments on molecular scaffold OOD dataset demonstrated that the proposed approach achieves state-of-the-art performance on GNNs.

Resilience assessment and improvement for electric power transmission systems against typhoon disasters: A data-model hybrid driven approach

In response to the damage to electric power transmission systems caused by typhoon disasters in coastal areas, a planning-targeted resilience assessment framework that considers the impact of multiple factors is established to accurately find the weak links of the transmission system and improve the system resilience. Firstly, this paper constructs the attenuation model of the wind field and the comprehensive failure model of the system, in which the model drive to establish the cumulative failure model of the transmission system is adopted, and multiple data-driven schemes to correct the cumulative failure rate by relying on the feature factor information of the transmission system is adopted. At the same time, an analytic hierarchy process-weighted arithmetic averaging (AHP-WAA) method is introduced to select the optimal data-driven evaluation scheme. Secondly, this paper adopts the impact-increment-based state enumeration (IISE) method to establish resilience indicators for systems and corridors separately. On this basis, the optimal promotion strategy is selected according to the construction difficulty, resilience improvement ability, and cost analysis. Finally, simulations on the IEEE RTS-79 system have been carried out considering the influence of the real typhoon scenarios, micro-topographic and transmission corridor information factors. The results demonstrate that the hybrid-driven system resilience assessment and improvement method can assist planners in accurately judging the resilience level of the system against typhoon disasters and selecting the best resilience improvement strategy based on the cost-effectiveness ratio.

Rethinking the Performance of ISAC System: From Efficiency and Utility Perspectives

Integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) is an essential technology for the 6G communication system, which enables the conventional wireless communication network capable of sensing targets around. The shared use of pilots is a promising strategy to achieve ISAC. It brings a trade-off between communication and sensing, which is still unclear under the imperfect channel estimation condition. To provide some insights, the trade-off between ergodic capacity with imperfect channel estimation and ergodic Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) of range sensing is investigated. Firstly, the closedform expressions of ergodic capacity and ergodic range CRB are derived, which are associated with the number of pilots. Secondly, two novel metrics named efficiency and utility are firstly proposed to evaluate the joint performance of capacity and range sensing error. Specifically, efficiency is used to evaluate the achievable capacity per unit of the sensing error, and utility is designed to evaluate the utilization degree of ISAC. Moreover, an algorithm of pilot length optimization is designed to achieve the best efficiency. Finally, simulation results are given to verify the accuracy of analytical results, and provide some insights on designing the slot structure.

Uniqueness of some cylindrical tangent cones to special Lagrangians

We show that if an exact special Lagrangian $N\subset \mathbb{C}^n$ has a multiplicity one, cylindrical tangent cone of the form $\mathbb{R}^{k}\times \mathbf{C}$ where $\mathbf{C}$ is a special Lagrangian cone with smooth, connected link, then this tangent cone is unique provided $\mathbf{C}$ satisfies an integrability condition. This applies, for example, when $\mathbf{C}= \mathbf{C}_{HL}^{m}$ is the Harvey-Lawson $T^{m-1}$ cone for $m\ne 8,9$.

Human Decision Makings on Curriculum Reinforcement Learning with Difficulty Adjustment

Human-centered AI considers human experiences with AI performance. While abundant research has been helping AI achieve superhuman performance either by fully automatic or weak supervision learning, fewer endeavors are experimenting with how AI can tailor to humans' preferred skill level given fine-grained input. In this work, we guide the curriculum reinforcement learning results towards a preferred performance level that is neither too hard nor too easy via learning from the human decision process. To achieve this, we developed a portable, interactive platform that enables the user to interact with agents online via manipulating the task difficulty, observing performance, and providing curriculum feedback. Our system is highly parallelizable, making it possible for a human to train large-scale reinforcement learning applications that require millions of samples without a server. The result demonstrates the effectiveness of an interactive curriculum for reinforcement learning involving human-in-the-loop. It shows reinforcement learning performance can successfully adjust in sync with the human desired difficulty level. We believe this research will open new doors for achieving flow and personalized adaptive difficulties.
