Irreducible weight modules over the Schr{ö}dinger Lie algebra in $(n+1)$ dimensional space-time

In this paper, we study weight representations over the Schr{ö}dinger Lie algebra $\mathfrak{s}_n$ for any positive integer $n$. It turns out that the algebra $\mathfrak{s}_n$ can be realized by polynomial differential operators. Using this realization, we give a complete classification of irreducible weight $\mathfrak{s}_n$-modules with finite dimensional weight spaces for any $n$. All such modules can be clearly characterized by the tensor product of $\mathfrak{so}_n$-modules, $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-modules and modules over the Weyl algebra.

Security-Constrained Multi-Objective Optimal Power Flow for a Hybrid AC/VSC-MTDC System with Lasso-based Contingency Filtering

In order to coordinate the economy and voltage quality of a meshed AC/VSC-MTDC system, a new corrective security-constrained multi-objective optimal power flow (SC-MOPF) method is presented in this paper. A parallel SC-MOPF model with N-1 security constraints is proposed for corrective control actions of the meshed AC/DC system, in which the minimization of the generation cost and voltage deviation are used as objective functions. To solve this model, a novel parallel bi-criterion evolution indicator based evolutionary algorithm (BCE-IBEA) algorithm is developed to seek multiple well-spread Pareto-optimal solutions through the introduction of parallel computation. In this process, a least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (Lasso)-based N-1 contingency filtering scheme with a composite security index is developed to efficiently screen out the most severe cases from all contingencies. And thereby, the best compromise solutions reflecting the preferences of different decision makers are automatically determined via an integrated decision making technique. Case studies in the modified IEEE 14- and 300- bus systems demonstrate that the presented approach manages to address this SC-MOPF problem with significantly improved computational efficiency.

Attribute-aware Pedestrian Detection in a Crowd

Pedestrian detection is an initial step to perform outdoor scene analysis, which plays an essential role in many real-world applications. Although having enjoyed the merits of deep learning frameworks from the generic object detectors, pedestrian detection is still a very challenging task due to heavy occlusion and highly crowded group. Generally, the conventional detectors are unable to differentiate individuals from each other effectively under such a dense environment. To tackle this critical problem, we propose an attribute-aware pedestrian detector to explicitly model people's semantic attributes in a high-level feature detection fashion. Besides the typical semantic features, center position, target's scale and offset, we introduce a pedestrian-oriented attribute feature to encode the high-level semantic differences among the crowd. Moreover, a novel attribute-feature-based Non-Maximum Suppression~(NMS) is proposed to distinguish the person from a highly overlapped group by adaptively rejecting the false-positive results in a very crowd settings. Furthermore, a novel ground truth target is designed to alleviate the difficulties caused by the attribute configuration and extremely class imbalance issues during training. Finally, we evaluate our proposed attribute-aware pedestrian detector on two benchmark datasets including CityPersons and CrowdHuman. The experimental results show that our approach outperforms state-of-the-art methods at a large margin on pedestrian detection.

On weak solutions to the compressible inviscid two-fluid model

In three space dimensions, we consider the compressible inviscid model describing the time evolution of two fluids sharing the same velocity and enjoying the algebraic pressure closure. By employing the technique of convex integration, we prove the existence of infinitely many global-in-time weak solutions for any smooth initial data. We also show that for any piecewise constant initial densities, there exists suitable initial velocity such that the problem admits infinitely many global-in-time weak solutions that conserve the total energy. The structure of the two-fluid model is crucial in our analysis. Adaptations of the main results to other two-fluid models, like the liquid-gas flow, are available. Local-in-time existence and uniqueness of classical solutions will also be shown.

Robustness Verification of Tree-based Models

We study the robustness verification problem for tree-based models, including decision trees, random forests (RFs) and gradient boosted decision trees (GBDTs). Formal robustness verification of decision tree ensembles involves finding the exact minimal adversarial perturbation or a guaranteed lower bound of it. Existing approaches find the minimal adversarial perturbation by a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problem, which takes exponential time so is impractical for large ensembles. Although this verification problem is NP-complete in general, we give a more precise complexity characterization. We show that there is a simple linear time algorithm for verifying a single tree, and for tree ensembles, the verification problem can be cast as a max-clique problem on a multi-partite graph with bounded boxicity. For low dimensional problems when boxicity can be viewed as constant, this reformulation leads to a polynomial time algorithm. For general problems, by exploiting the boxicity of the graph, we develop an efficient multi-level verification algorithm that can give tight lower bounds on the robustness of decision tree ensembles, while allowing iterative improvement and any-time termination. OnRF/GBDT models trained on 10 datasets, our algorithm is hundreds of times faster than the previous approach that requires solving MILPs, and is able to give tight robustness verification bounds on large GBDTs with hundreds of deep trees.

Self-Attention Enhanced Selective Gate with Entity-Aware Embedding for Distantly Supervised Relation Extraction

Distantly supervised relation extraction intrinsically suffers from noisy labels due to the strong assumption of distant supervision. Most prior works adopt a selective attention mechanism over sentences in a bag to denoise from wrongly labeled data, which however could be incompetent when there is only one sentence in a bag. In this paper, we propose a brand-new light-weight neural framework to address the distantly supervised relation extraction problem and alleviate the defects in previous selective attention framework. Specifically, in the proposed framework, 1) we use an entity-aware word embedding method to integrate both relative position information and head/tail entity embeddings, aiming to highlight the essence of entities for this task; 2) we develop a self-attention mechanism to capture the rich contextual dependencies as a complement for local dependencies captured by piecewise CNN; and 3) instead of using selective attention, we design a pooling-equipped gate, which is based on rich contextual representations, as an aggregator to generate bag-level representation for final relation classification. Compared to selective attention, one major advantage of the proposed gating mechanism is that, it performs stably and promisingly even if only one sentence appears in a bag and thus keeps the consistency across all training examples. The experiments on NYT dataset demonstrate that our approach achieves a new state-of-the-art performance in terms of both AUC and top-n precision metrics.

Basis Light-Front Quantization for a Chiral Nucleon-Pion Lagrangian

We present the first application of the Basis Light-Front Quantization method to a simple chiral model of the nucleon-pion system as a relativistic bound state for the physical proton. The light-front mass-squared matrix of the nucleon-pion system is obtained within a truncated basis. The mass and the corresponding light-front wave function (LFWF) of the proton are computed by numerical diagonalization of the resulting mass-squared matrix. With the boost invariant LFWF, we calculate the probability density distribution of the pion's longitudinal momentum fraction and the Dirac form factor of the proton.

Proton structure from a light-front Hamiltonian

We obtain the electromagnetic form factors, the axial form factor, and the parton distribution functions of the proton from the eigenstates of a light-front effective Hamiltonian in the leading Fock representation suitable for low-momentum scale applications. The electromagnetic and the axial form factors are found to be in agreement with the available experimental data. The unpolarized, the helicity, and the transversity valence quark distributions, after QCD evolution, are consistent with the global QCD analyses. The tensor charge also agree the experimental data, while the axial charge is somewhat outside the experimental error bar.

A Forest from the Trees: Generation through Neighborhoods

In this work, we propose to learn a generative model using both learned features (through a latent space) and memories (through neighbors). Although human learning makes seamless use of both learned perceptual features and instance recall, current generative learning paradigms only make use of one of these two components. Take, for instance, flow models, which learn a latent space of invertible features that follow a simple distribution. Conversely, kernel density techniques use instances to shift a simple distribution into an aggregate mixture model. Here we propose multiple methods to enhance the latent space of a flow model with neighborhood information. Not only does our proposed framework represent a more human-like approach by leveraging both learned features and memories, but it may also be viewed as a step forward in non-parametric methods. The efficacy of our model is shown empirically with standard image datasets. We observe compelling results and a significant improvement over baselines.

A Heuristic Algorithm Based on Tour Rebuilding Operator for the Traveling Salesman Problem

TSP (Traveling Salesman Problem), a classic NP-complete problem in combinatorial optimization, is of great significance in multiple fields. Exact algorithms for TSP are not practical due to their exponential time cost. Thus, approximate algorithms become the research focus and can be further divided into two types, tour construction algorithms and tour improvement algorithms. Researches show that the latter type of algorithms can obtain better solutions than the former one. However, traditional tour improvement algorithms have shortcomings. They converge very slowly and tend to be trapped in local optima. In practice, tour construction algorithms are often used in initialization of tour improvement algorithms to speed up convergence. Nevertheless, such a combination leads to no improvement on quality of solutions. In this paper, a heuristic algorithm based on the new tour rebuilding operator is proposed. The algorithm features rapid convergence and powerful global search. In the experiments based on 40 instances in TSPLIB, the best known solutions of 22 instances are refreshed by the proposed method. Meanwhile, the best known solutions of the other 18 instances are obtained.

Efficient Spatial Nearest Neighbor Queries Based on Multi-layer Voronoi Diagrams

Nearest neighbor (NN) problem is an important scientific problem. The NN query, to find the closest one to a given query point among a set of points, is widely used in applications such as density estimation, pattern classification, information retrieval and spatial analysis. A direct generalization of the NN query is the k nearest neighbors (kNN) query, where the k closest point are required to be found. Since NN and kNN problems were raised, many algorithms have been proposed to solve them. It has been indicated in literature that the only method to solve these problems exactly with sublinear time complexity, is to filter out the unnecessary spatial computation by using the pre-processing structure, commonly referred to as the spatial index. The recently proposed spatial indices available for NN search, are almost constructed through spatial partition. These indices are tree-like, and the tree-like hierarchical structure can usually significantly improve the efficiency of NN search. However, when the data are distributed extremely unevenly, it is difficult to satisfy both the balance of the tree and the non-overlap of the subspace corresponding to the nodes. Thus the acceleration performance of the tree-like indices is severely jeopardized. In this paper, we propose a non-tree spatial index which consists of multiple layers of Voronoi diagrams (MVD). This index can entirely avoid the dilemma tree-like structures face, and solve the NN problems stably with logarithmic time complexity. Furthermore, it is convenient to achieve kNN search by extending NN search on MVD. In the experiments, we evaluate the efficiency of this indexing for both NN search and kNN search by comparing with VoR-tree, R-tree and kd-tree. The experiments indicate that compared to NN search and kNN search with the other three indices, these two search methods have significantly higher efficiency with MVD.

Tuning Non-Gilbert-type damping in FeGa films on MgO(001) via oblique deposition

The ability to tailor the damping factor is essential for spintronic and spin-torque applications. Here, we report an approach to manipulate the damping factor of FeGa/MgO(001) films by oblique deposition. Owing to the defects at the surface or interface in thin films, two-magnon scattering (TMS) acts as a non-Gilbert damping mechanism in magnetization relaxation. In this work, the contribution of TMS was characterized by in-plane angular dependent ferromagnetic resonance (FMR). It is demonstrated that the intrinsic Gilbert damping is isotropic and invariant, while the extrinsic mechanism related to TMS is anisotropic and can be tuned by oblique deposition. Furthermore, the two and fourfold TMS related to the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy (UMA) and magnetocrystalline anisotropy were discussed. Our results open an avenue to manipulate magnetization relaxation in spintronic devices.

High-speed measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution with integrated silicon photonics

Measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD) removes all detector side channels and enables secure QKD with an untrusted relay. It is suitable for building a star-type quantum access network, where the complicated and expensive measurement devices are placed in the central untrusted relay and each user requires only a low-cost transmitter, such as an integrated photonic chip. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a 1.25 GHz silicon photonic chip-based MDI-QKD system using polarization encoding. The photonic chip transmitters integrate the necessary encoding components for a standard QKD source. We implement random modulations of polarization states and decoy intensities, and demonstrate a finite-key secret rate of 31 bps over 36 dB channel loss (or 180 km standard fiber). This key rate is higher than state-of-the-art MDI-QKD experiments. The results show that silicon photonic chip-based MDI-QKD, benefiting from miniaturization, low-cost manufacture and compatibility with CMOS microelectronics, is a promising solution for future quantum secure networks.

A Unified Framework for Data Poisoning Attack to Graph-based Semi-supervised Learning

In this paper, we proposed a general framework for data poisoning attacks to graph-based semi-supervised learning (G-SSL). In this framework, we first unify different tasks, goals, and constraints into a single formula for data poisoning attack in G-SSL, then we propose two specialized algorithms to efficiently solve two important cases --- poisoning regression tasks under $\ell_2$-norm constraint and classification tasks under $\ell_0$-norm constraint. In the former case, we transform it into a non-convex trust region problem and show that our gradient-based algorithm with delicate initialization and update scheme finds the (globally) optimal perturbation. For the latter case, although it is an NP-hard integer programming problem, we propose a probabilistic solver that works much better than the classical greedy method. Lastly, we test our framework on real datasets and evaluate the robustness of G-SSL algorithms. For instance, on the MNIST binary classification problem (50000 training data with 50 labeled), flipping two labeled data is enough to make the model perform like random guess (around 50\% error).

Spaceborne low-noise single-photon detection for satellite-based quantum communications

Single-photon detectors (SPDs) play important roles in highly sensitive detection applications, such as fluorescence spectroscopy, remote sensing and ranging, deep space optical communications, elementary particle detection, and quantum communications. However, the adverse conditions in space, such as the increased radiation flux and thermal vacuum, severely limit their noise performances, reliability, and lifetime. Herein, we present the first example of spaceborne, low-noise, high reliability SPDs, based on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) silicon avalanche photodiodes (APD). Based on the high noise-radiation sensitivity of silicon APD, we have developed special shielding structures, multistage cooling technologies, and configurable driver electronics that significantly improved the COTS APD reliability and mitigated the SPD noise-radiation sensitivity. This led to a reduction of the expected in-orbit radiation-induced dark count rate (DCR) from ~219 counts per second (cps) per day to ~0.76 cps/day. During a continuous period of continuous operations in orbit which spanned of 1029 days, the SPD DCR was maintained below 1000 cps, i.e., the actual in-orbit radiation-induced DCR increment rate was ~0.54 cps/day, i.e., two orders of magnitude lower than those evoked by previous technologies, while its photon detection efficiency was > 45%. Our spaceborne, low-noise SPDs established a feasible satellite-based up-link quantum communication that was validated on the quantum experiment science satellite platform. Moreover, our SPDs open new windows of opportunities for space research and applications in deep-space optical communications, single-photon laser ranging, as well as for testing the fundamental principles of physics in space.
