Measurements of differential and angle-integrated cross sections for the $^{10}$B($n, α$)$^{7}$Li reaction in the neutron energy range from 1.0 eV to 2.5 MeV

Differential and angle-integrated cross sections for the $^{10}$B($n, α$)$^{7}$Li, $^{10}$B($n, α$$_{0}$)$^{7}$Li and $^{10}$B($n, α$$_{1}$)$^{7}$Li$^{*}$ reactions have been measured at CSNS Back-n white neutron source. Two enriched (90%) $^{10}$B samples 5.0 cm in diameter and ~85.0 $μ$g/cm$^{2}$ in thickness each with an aluminum backing were prepared, and back-to-back mounted at the sample holder. The charged particles were detected using the silicon-detector array of the Light-charged Particle Detector Array (LPDA) system. The neutron energy E$_{n}$ was determined by TOF (time-of-flight) method, and the valid $α$ events were extracted from the E$_{n}$-Amplitude two-dimensional spectrum. With 15 silicon detectors, the differential cross sections of $α$-particles were measured from 19.2° to 160.8°. Fitted with the Legendre polynomial series, the ($n, α$) cross sections were obtained through integration. The absolute cross sections were normalized using the standard cross sections of the $^{10}$B($n, α$)$^{7}$Li reaction in the 0.3 - 0.5 MeV neutron energy region. The measurement neutron energy range for the $^{10}$B($n, α$)$^{7}$Li reaction is 1.0 eV $\le$ En < 2.5 MeV (67 energy points), and for the $^{10}$B($n, α$$_{0}$)$^{7}$Li and $^{10}$B($n, α$$_{1}$)$^{7}$Li$^{*}$ reactions is 1.0 eV $\le$ En < 1.0 MeV (59 energy points). The present results have been analyzed by the resonance reaction mechanism and the level structure of the $^{11}$B compound system, and compared with existing measurements and evaluations.

Proximal Policy Optimization with Mixed Distributed Training

Instability and slowness are two main problems in deep reinforcement learning. Even if proximal policy optimization (PPO) is the state of the art, it still suffers from these two problems. We introduce an improved algorithm based on proximal policy optimization, mixed distributed proximal policy optimization (MDPPO), and show that it can accelerate and stabilize the training process. In our algorithm, multiple different policies train simultaneously and each of them controls several identical agents that interact with environments. Actions are sampled by each policy separately as usual, but the trajectories for the training process are collected from all agents, instead of only one policy. We find that if we choose some auxiliary trajectories elaborately to train policies, the algorithm will be more stable and quicker to converge especially in the environments with sparse rewards.

Exchangeable Generative Models with Flow Scans

In this work, we develop a new approach to generative density estimation for exchangeable, non-i.i.d. data. The proposed framework, FlowScan, combines invertible flow transformations with a sorted scan to flexibly model the data while preserving exchangeability. Unlike most existing methods, FlowScan exploits the intradependencies within sets to learn both global and local structure. FlowScan represents the first approach that is able to apply sequential methods to exchangeable density estimation without resorting to averaging over all possible permutations. We achieve new state-of-the-art performance on point cloud and image set modeling.

UGC-VIDEO: perceptual quality assessment of user-generated videos

Recent years have witnessed an ever-expandingvolume of user-generated content (UGC) videos available on the Internet. Nevertheless, progress on perceptual quality assessmentof UGC videos still remains quite limited. There are many distinguished characteristics of UGC videos in the complete video production and delivery chain, and one important property closely relevant to video quality is that there does not exist the pristine source after they are uploaded to the hosting platform, such that they often undergo multiple compression stages before ultimately viewed. To facilitate the UGC video quality assessment,we created a UGC video perceptual quality assessment database. It contains 50 source videos collected from TikTok with diverse content, along with multiple distortion versions generated bythe compression with different quantization levels and coding standards. Subjective quality assessment was conducted to evaluate the video quality. Furthermore, we benchmark the database using existing quality assessment algorithms, and potential roomis observed to future improve the accuracy of UGC video quality measures.

$L_0$-ARM: Network Sparsification via Stochastic Binary Optimization

We consider network sparsification as an $L_0$-norm regularized binary optimization problem, where each unit of a neural network (e.g., weight, neuron, or channel, etc.) is attached with a stochastic binary gate, whose parameters are jointly optimized with original network parameters. The Augment-Reinforce-Merge (ARM), a recently proposed unbiased gradient estimator, is investigated for this binary optimization problem. Compared to the hard concrete gradient estimator from Louizos et al., ARM demonstrates superior performance of pruning network architectures while retaining almost the same accuracies of baseline methods. Similar to the hard concrete estimator, ARM also enables conditional computation during model training but with improved effectiveness due to the exact binary stochasticity. Thanks to the flexibility of ARM, many smooth or non-smooth parametric functions, such as scaled sigmoid or hard sigmoid, can be used to parameterize this binary optimization problem and the unbiasness of the ARM estimator is retained, while the hard concrete estimator has to rely on the hard sigmoid function to achieve conditional computation and thus accelerated training. Extensive experiments on multiple public datasets demonstrate state-of-the-art pruning rates with almost the same accuracies of baseline methods. The resulting algorithm $L_0$-ARM sparsifies the Wide-ResNet models on CIFAR-10 and CIFAR-100 while the hard concrete estimator cannot. The code is public available at https://github.com/leo-yangli/l0-arm.

What Happens on the Edge, Stays on the Edge: Toward Compressive Deep Learning

Machine learning at the edge offers great benefits such as increased privacy and security, low latency, and more autonomy. However, a major challenge is that many devices, in particular edge devices, have very limited memory, weak processors, and scarce energy supply. We propose a hybrid hardware-software framework that has the potential to significantly reduce the computational complexity and memory requirements of on-device machine learning. In the first step, inspired by compressive sensing, data is collected in compressed form simultaneously with the sensing process. Thus this compression happens already at the hardware level during data acquisition. But unlike in compressive sensing, this compression is achieved via a projection operator that is specifically tailored to the desired machine learning task. The second step consists of a specially designed and trained deep network. As concrete example we consider the task of image classification, although the proposed framework is more widely applicable. An additional benefit of our approach is that it can be easily combined with existing on-device techniques. Numerical simulations illustrate the viability of our method.

Snowball: Iterative Model Evolution and Confident Sample Discovery for Semi-Supervised Learning on Very Small Labeled Datasets

In this work, we develop a joint sample discovery and iterative model evolution method for semi-supervised learning on very small labeled training sets. We propose a master-teacher-student model framework to provide multi-layer guidance during the model evolution process with multiple iterations and generations. The teacher model is constructed by performing an exponential moving average of the student models obtained from past training steps. The master network combines the knowledge of the student and teacher models with additional access to newly discovered samples. The master and teacher models are then used to guide the training of the student network by enforcing the consistence between their predictions of unlabeled samples and evolve all models when more and more samples are discovered. Our extensive experiments demonstrate that the discovering confident samples from the unlabeled dataset, once coupled with the above master-teacher-student network evolution, can significantly improve the overall semi-supervised learning performance. For example, on the CIFAR-10 dataset, with a very small set of 250 labeled samples, our method achieves an error rate of 11.81 %, more than 38 % lower than the state-of-the-art method Mean-Teacher (49.91 %).

Dynamic State Estimation of Generators Under Cyber Attacks

Accurate and reliable estimation of generator's dynamic state vectors in real time are critical to the monitoring and control of power systems. A robust Cubature Kalman Filter (RCKF) based approach is proposed for dynamic state estimation (DSE) of generators under cyber attacks in this paper. First, two types of cyber attacks, namely false data injection and denial of service attacks, are modelled and thereby introduced into DSE of a generator by mixing the attack vectors with the measurement data; Second, under cyber attacks with different degrees of sophistication, the RCKF algorithm and the Cubature Kalman Filter (CKF) algorithm are adopted to the DSE, and then the two algorithms are compared and discussed. The novelty of this study lies primarily in our attempt to introduce cyber attacks into DSE of generators. The simulation results on the IEEE 9-bus system and the New England 16-machine 68-bus system verify the effectiveness and superiority of the RCKF.

Mukai duality on adiabatic coassociative fibrations

This paper studies the formal adiabatic limit of coassociative K3 fibred torsion free $G_2$ manifolds fibred over a contractible base, shows how to put this structure on a different fibration obtained by fibrewise performing Mukai duality of K3 surfaces, and furthermore relates the gauge theories on both fibrations by a Nahm transform. This gives a mathematical interpretation to the physical speculations of Gukov, Yau and Zaslow.

Incorporating demand response of electric vehicles in scheduling of isolated microgrids with renewables using a bi-level programming approach

In this work, a novel optimal scheduling approach is proposed for isolated microgrids (MGs) with renewable generations by incorporating demand response of electric vehicles (EVs). First, a bi-level programming-based MG scheduling model is proposed under real-time pricing environments, where the upper- and lower- levels seek to minimize the MG net operating cost and the EV charging cost. Second, a hybrid solution algorithm called JAYA-interior point method is put forward to solve the model. And finally, the simulation results demonstrate that incorporating demand response of electric vehicles is able to guide EV users to actively participate in MG scheduling and achieve the peak load shaving, which offers a fundamental way to balance the interests between MG and EV users.

Frame dependence of transition form factors in light-front dynamics

We calculate the transition form factor between vector and pseudoscalar quarkonia in both the timelike and the spacelike region using light-front dynamics. We investigate the frame dependence of the form factors for heavy quarkonia with light-front wavefunctions calculated from the valence Fock sector. This dependence could serve as a measure for the Lorentz symmetry violation arising from the Fock-space truncation. We suggest using frames with minimal longitudinal momentum transfer for calculations in the valence Fock sector, namely the Drell-Yan frame for the space-like region and a specific longitudinal frame for the timelike region; at $q^2=0$ these two frames give the same result. We also use the transition form factor in the timelike region to investigate the electromagnetic Dalitz decay $ψ_A\to ψ_B l^+l^-$ ($l = e,μ$) and predict the effective mass spectrum of the lepton pair.

Dimensional Crossover and Topological Phase Transition in Dirac Semimetal Na3Bi Films

Three-dimensional (3D) topological Dirac semimetal, when thinned down to 2D few layers, is expected to possess gapped Dirac nodes via quantum confinement effect and concomitantly display the intriguing quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator phase. However, the 3D-to-2D crossover and the associated topological phase transition, which is valuable for understanding the topological quantum phases, remain unexplored. Here, we synthesize high-quality Na3Bi thin films with R3*R3 reconstruction on graphene, and systematically characterize their thickness-dependent electronic and topological properties by scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy in combination with first-principles calculations. We demonstrate that Dirac gaps emerge in Na3Bi films, providing spectroscopic evidences of dimensional crossover from a 3D semimetal to a 2D topological insulator. Importantly, the Dirac gaps are revealed to be of sizable magnitudes on 3 and 4 monolayers (72 and 65 meV, respectively) with topologically nontrivial edge states. Moreover, the Fermi energy of a Na3Bi film can be tuned via certain growth process, thus offering a viable way for achieving charge neutrality in transport. The feasibility of controlling Dirac gap opening and charge neutrality enables realizing intrinsic high-temperature QSH effect in Na3Bi films and achieving potential applications in topological devices.

Cluster-GCN: An Efficient Algorithm for Training Deep and Large Graph Convolutional Networks

Graph convolutional network (GCN) has been successfully applied to many graph-based applications; however, training a large-scale GCN remains challenging. Current SGD-based algorithms suffer from either a high computational cost that exponentially grows with number of GCN layers, or a large space requirement for keeping the entire graph and the embedding of each node in memory. In this paper, we propose Cluster-GCN, a novel GCN algorithm that is suitable for SGD-based training by exploiting the graph clustering structure. Cluster-GCN works as the following: at each step, it samples a block of nodes that associate with a dense subgraph identified by a graph clustering algorithm, and restricts the neighborhood search within this subgraph. This simple but effective strategy leads to significantly improved memory and computational efficiency while being able to achieve comparable test accuracy with previous algorithms. To test the scalability of our algorithm, we create a new Amazon2M data with 2 million nodes and 61 million edges which is more than 5 times larger than the previous largest publicly available dataset (Reddit). For training a 3-layer GCN on this data, Cluster-GCN is faster than the previous state-of-the-art VR-GCN (1523 seconds vs 1961 seconds) and using much less memory (2.2GB vs 11.2GB). Furthermore, for training 4 layer GCN on this data, our algorithm can finish in around 36 minutes while all the existing GCN training algorithms fail to train due to the out-of-memory issue. Furthermore, Cluster-GCN allows us to train much deeper GCN without much time and memory overhead, which leads to improved prediction accuracy---using a 5-layer Cluster-GCN, we achieve state-of-the-art test F1 score 99.36 on the PPI dataset, while the previous best result was 98.71 by [16]. Our codes are publicly available at https://github.com/google-research/google-research/tree/master/cluster_gcn.

Dynamical Nucleon-Pion System via Basis Light-Front Quantization

We present the first application of the Basis Light-Front Quantization method to study a simple chiral model of the nucleon-pion system via an ab initio, non-perturbative, Hamiltonian approach. As a test problem, we consider the physical proton as the relativistic bound state of the nucleon-pion system. Based on the chiral model of the nucleon-pion system, we construct the mass-squared matrix of the system within our light-front basis representation. We obtain the proton's mass and the corresponding light-front wave function by solving the eigenvalue problem of the mass-squared matrix. With the resulting boost-invariant light-front wave function, we also compute the proton's parton distribution function.

Dynamic State Estimation of Synchronous Machines Using Robust Cubature Kalman Filter Against Complex Measurement Noise Statistics

Cubature Kalman Filter (CKF) has good performance when handling nonlinear dynamic state estimations. However, it cannot work well in non-Gaussian noise and bad data environment due to the lack of auto-adaptive ability to measure noise statistics on line. In order to address the problem of behavioral decline and divergence when measure noise statistics deviate prior noise statistics, a new robust CKF (RCKF) algorithm is developed by combining the Huber's M-estimation theory with the classical CKF, and thereby it is proposed to coping with the dynamic state estimation of synchronous generators in this study. The simulation results on the IEEE-9 bus system and New England 16-machine-68-bus system demonstrate that the estimation accuracy and convergence of the proposed RCKF are superior to those of the classical CKF under complex measurement noise environments including different measurement noises and bad data, and that the RCKF is capable of effectively eliminating the impact of bad data on the estimation effects.

Global weak solutions to a two-dimensional compressible MHD equations of viscous non-resistive fluids

We consider a two-dimensional MHD model describing the evolution of viscous, compressible and electrically conducting fluids under the action of vertical magnetic field without resistivity. Existence of global weak solutions is established for any adiabatic exponent γ>1. Inspired by the approximate scheme proposed in [15], we consider a two-level approximate system with artificial diffusion and pressure term. At the first level, we prove global well-posedness of the regularized system and establish uniform-in-εestimates to the regular solutions. At the second level, we show global existence of weak solutions to the system with artificial pressure by sending εto 0 and deriving uniform-in-δestimates. Then global weak solution to the original system is constructed by vanishing δ. The key issue in the limit passage is the strong convergence of approximate sequence of the density and magnetic field. This is accomplished by following the technique developed in [15, 26] and using the new technique of variable reduction developed by Vasseur et al. [33] in order to handle the cross terms.

Inferring Latent dimension of Linear Dynamical System with Minimum Description Length

Time-invariant linear dynamical system arises in many real-world applications, and its usefulness is widely acknowledged. A practical limitation with this model is that its latent dimension that has a large impact on the model capability needs to be manually specified. It can be demonstrated that a lower-order model class could be totally nested into a higher-order class, and the corresponding likelihood is nondecreasing. Hence, criterion built on the likelihood is not appropriate for model selection. This paper addresses the issue and proposes a criterion for linear dynamical system based on the principle of minimum description length. The latent structure, which is omitted in previous work, is explicitly considered in this newly proposed criterion. Our work extends the principle of minimum description length and demonstrates its effectiveness in the tasks of model training. The experiments on both univariate and multivariate sequences confirm the good performance of our newly proposed method.
