Dielectric properties of relaxor-ferroelectric ceramic and single crystal Pb(In$_{1/2}$Nb$_{1/2}$)O$_{3}$-Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$-PbTiO$_{3}$ at cryogenic temperatures

We investigate the low temperature behaviour of Pb(In$_{1/2}$Nb$_{1/2}$)O$_{3}$-Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$-PbTiO$_{3}$ using dielectric permittivity measurements. We compare single crystal plates measured in the [001] and [111] directions with a polycrystalline ceramic of the same composition. Poled crystals behave very differently to unpoled crystals, whereas the dielectric spectrum of the ceramic changes very little on poling. A large, frequency dependent dielectric relaxation seen in the poled [001] crystal around 100 K is much less prominent in the [111] crystal, and doesn't occur in the ceramic. Preparation conditions and the microstructure of the material play a role in the low temperature dynamics of relaxor-ferroelectric crystals.

Satellite-relayed intercontinental quantum network

We perform decoy-state quantum key distribution between a low-Earth-orbit satellite and multiple ground stations located in Xinglong, Nanshan, and Graz, which establish satellite-to-ground secure keys with ~kHz rate per passage of the satellite Micius over a ground station. The satellite thus establishes a secure key between itself and, say, Xinglong, and another key between itself and, say, Graz. Then, upon request from the ground command, Micius acts as a trusted relay. It performs bitwise exclusive OR operations between the two keys and relays the result to one of the ground stations. That way, a secret key is created between China and Europe at locations separated by 7600 km on Earth. These keys are then used for intercontinental quantum-secured communication. This was on the one hand the transmission of images in a one-time pad configuration from China to Austria as well as from Austria to China. Also, a videoconference was performed between the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which also included a 280 km optical ground connection between Xinglong and Beijing. Our work points towards an efficient solution for an ultralong-distance global quantum network, laying the groundwork for a future quantum internet.

Pseudospins and topological effects of phonons in a Kekule lattice

The search for exotic topological effects of phonons has attracted enormous interest for both fundamental science and practical applications. By studying phonons in a Kekulé lattice, we find a new type of pseudospins characterized by quantized Berry phases and pseudoangular momenta, which introduces various novel topological effects, including topologically protected pseudospin-polarized interface states and a phonon pseudospin Hall effect. We further demonstrate a pseudospin-contrasting optical selection rule and a pseudospin Zeeman effect, giving a complete generation-manipulation-detection paradigm of the phonon pseudospin. The pseudospin and topology-related physics revealed for phonons is general and applicable for electrons, photons and other particles.

Bayesian Nonparametric Inference for Panel Count Data with an Informative Observation Process

In this paper, the panel count data analysis for recurrent events is considered. Such analysis is useful for studying tumor or infection recurrences in both clinical trial and observational studies. A bivariate Gaussian Cox process model is proposed to jointly model the observation process and the recurrent event process. Bayesian nonparametric inference is proposed for simultaneously estimating regression parameters, bivariate frailty effects and baseline intensity functions. Inference is done through Markov chain Monte Carlo, with fully developed computational techniques. Predictive inference is also discussed under the Bayesian setting. The proposed method is shown to be efficient via simulation studies. A clinical trial dataset on skin cancer patients is analyzed to illustrate the proposed approach.

Localization of highest weight modules of a class of Extended Affine Lie Algebras

In 2006, Gao and Zeng \cite{GZ} gave the free field realizations of highest weight modules over a class of extended affine Lie algebras. In the present paper, applying the technique of localization to those free field realizations, we construct a class of new weight modules over the extended affine Lie algebras. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for these modules to be irreducible. In this way, we construct free field realizations for a class of simple weight modules with infinite weight multiplicities over the extended affine Lie algebras.

Local Nahm transform and singularity formation of ASD connections

This paper develops a local analogue of the ADHM construction, which characterises ASD instantons defined over smooth bounded domains inside Euclidean $\mathbb{R}^4$ diffeomorphic to the 4-ball, in terms of infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces and bounded Hermitian linear operators satisfying an analogue of the ADHM equation. Morever, we describe the degeneration of this construction when a family of instantons develops a curvature singularity at the origin.

Electrodynamics of dual superconducting chiral medium

We study the electrodynamics of a chiral medium with electric and magnetic charges using the effective Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory extended to include the magnetic current. The exchange of helicity between the chiral medium and the magnetic field, known as the inverse cascade, is controlled by the chiral anomaly equation. In the presence of the magnetic current, the magnetic helicity is dissipated, so that the inverse cascade stops when the magnetic helicity vanishes while the chiral conductivity reaches a non-vanishing stationary value satisfying $σ_χ^2< 4σ_eσ_m$, where $σ_e$, $σ_m$ and $σ_χ$ are the electric, magnetic and chiral conductivities respectively. We argue that this state is superconducting and exhibits the Meissner effect for both electric and magnetic fields. Moreover, this state is stable with respect to small magnetic helicity fluctuations; the magnetic helicity becomes unstable only when the inequality mentioned above is violated.

Gland Instance Segmentation Using Deep Multichannel Neural Networks

Objective: A new image instance segmentation method is proposed to segment individual glands (instances) in colon histology images. This process is challenging since the glands not only need to be segmented from a complex background, they must also be individually identified. Methods: We leverage the idea of image-to-image prediction in recent deep learning by designing an algorithm that automatically exploits and fuses complex multichannel information - regional, location, and boundary cues - in gland histology images. Our proposed algorithm, a deep multichannel framework, alleviates heavy feature design due to the use of convolutional neural networks and is able to meet multifarious requirements by altering channels. Results: Compared with methods reported in the 2015 MICCAI Gland Segmentation Challenge and other currently prevalent instance segmentation methods, we observe state-of-the-art results based on the evaluation metrics. Conclusion: The proposed deep multichannel algorithm is an effective method for gland instance segmentation. Significance: The generalization ability of our model not only enable the algorithm to solve gland instance segmentation problems, but the channel is also alternative that can be replaced for a specific task.

Global weak solutions to the one-dimensional compressible heat-conductive MHD equations without resistivity

We investigate the initial-boundary value problem for one-dimensional compressible, heat-conductive, non-resistive MHD equations of viscous, ideal polytropic fluids in the Lagrangian coordinates. The existence and Lipschitz continuous dependence on the initial data of global weak solutions are established. Uniqueness of weak solutions follows as a direct consequence of stability.

Global weak solutions and long time behavior for 1D compressible MHD equations without resistivity

We study the initial-boundary value problem for 1D compressible MHD equations of viscous non-resistive fluids in the Lagrangian mass coordinates. Based on the estimates of upper and lower bounds of the density, weak solutions are constructed by approximation of global regular solutions, the existence of which has recently been obtained by Jiang and Zhang in [17]. Uniqueness of weak solutions is also proved as a consequence of Lipschitz continuous dependence on the initial data. Furthermore, long time behavior for global solutions is investigated. Specifically, based on the uniform-in-time bounds of the density from above and below away from zero, together with the structure of the equations, we show the exponential decay rate in L^2- and H^1-norm respectively, with initial data of arbitrarily large.

Application-Layer Clock Synchronization for Wearables Using Skin Electric Potentials Induced by Powerline Radiation

Design of clock synchronization for networked nodes faces a fundamental trade-off between synchronization accuracy and universality for heterogeneous platforms, because a high synchronization accuracy generally requires platform-dependent hardware-level network packet timestamping. This paper presents TouchSync, a new indoor clock synchronization approach for wearables that achieves millisecond accuracy while preserving universality in that it uses standard system calls only, such as reading system clock, sampling sensors, and sending/receiving network messages. The design of TouchSync is driven by a key finding from our extensive measurements that the skin electric potentials (SEPs) induced by powerline radiation are salient, periodic, and synchronous on a same wearer and even across different wearers. TouchSync integrates the SEP signal into the universal principle of Network Time Protocol and solves an integer ambiguity problem by fusing the ambiguous results in multiple synchronization rounds to conclude an accurate clock offset between two synchronizing wearables. With our shared code, TouchSync can be readily integrated into any wearable applications. Extensive evaluation based on our Arduino and TinyOS implementations shows that TouchSync's synchronization errors are below 3 and 7 milliseconds on the same wearer and between two wearers 10 kilometers apart, respectively.

Topology-optimized Dual-Polarization Dirac Cones

We apply a large-scale computational technique, known as topology optimization, to the inverse design of photonic Dirac cones. In particular, we report on a variety of photonic crystal geometries, realizable in simple isotropic dielectric materials, which exhibit dual-polarization and dual-wavelength Dirac cones. We demonstrate the flexibility of this technique by designing photonic crystals of different symmetry types, such as ones with four-fold and six-fold rotational symmetry, which possess Dirac cones at different points within the Brillouin zone. The demonstrated and related optimization techniques could open new avenues to band-structure engineering and manipulating the propagation of light in periodic media, with possible applications in exotic optical phenomena such as effective zero-index media and topological photonics.

Distributed Camouflage for Swarm Robotics and Smart Materials

We present a distributed algorithm for a swarm of active particles to camouflage in an environment. Each particle is equipped with sensing, computation and communication, allowing the system to take color and gradient information from the environment and self-organize into an appropriate pattern. Current artificial camouflage systems are either limited to static patterns, which are adapted for specific environments, or rely on back-projection, which depend on the viewer's point of view. Inspired by the camouflage abilities of the cuttlefish, we propose a distributed estimation and pattern formation algorithm that allows to quickly adapt to different environments. We present convergence results both in simulation as well as on a swarm of miniature robots "Droplets" for a variety of patterns.

Detection of Moving Object in Dynamic Background Using Gaussian Max-Pooling and Segmentation Constrained RPCA

Due to its efficiency and stability, Robust Principal Component Analysis (RPCA) has been emerging as a promising tool for moving object detection. Unfortunately, existing RPCA based methods assume static or quasi-static background, and thereby they may have trouble in coping with the background scenes that exhibit a persistent dynamic behavior. In this work, we shall introduce two techniques to fill in the gap. First, instead of using the raw pixel-value as features that are brittle in the presence of dynamic background, we devise a so-called Gaussian max-pooling operator to estimate a "stable-value" for each pixel. Those stable-values are robust to various background changes and can therefore distinguish effectively the foreground objects from the background. Then, to obtain more accurate results, we further propose a Segmentation Constrained RPCA (SC-RPCA) model, which incorporates the temporal and spatial continuity in images into RPCA. The inference process of SC-RPCA is a group sparsity constrained nuclear norm minimization problem, which is convex and easy to solve. Experimental results on seven videos from the CDCNET 2014 database show the superior performance of the proposed method.

Penalized Maximum Tangent Likelihood Estimation and Robust Variable Selection

We introduce a new class of mean regression estimators -- penalized maximum tangent likelihood estimation -- for high-dimensional regression estimation and variable selection. We first explain the motivations for the key ingredient, maximum tangent likelihood estimation (MTE), and establish its asymptotic properties. We further propose a penalized MTE for variable selection and show that it is $\sqrt{n}$-consistent, enjoys the oracle property. The proposed class of estimators consists penalized $\ell_2$ distance, penalized exponential squared loss, penalized least trimmed square and penalized least square as special cases and can be regarded as a mixture of minimum Kullback-Leibler distance estimation and minimum $\ell_2$ distance estimation. Furthermore, we consider the proposed class of estimators under the high-dimensional setting when the number of variables $d$ can grow exponentially with the sample size $n$, and show that the entire class of estimators (including the aforementioned special cases) can achieve the optimal rate of convergence in the order of $\sqrt{\ln(d)/n}$. Finally, simulation studies and real data analysis demonstrate the advantages of the penalized MTE.

Recent Progress in the Concurrent Atomistic-Continuum (CAC) Method and its Application in Phonon Transport

This work presents recent the progress in the development of the Concurrent Atomistic-Continuum (CAC) method for coarse-grained space- and time-resolved atomistic simulations of phonon transport. Application examples, including heat pulses propagating across grain boundaries and phase interfaces, as well as the interactions between phonons and moving dislocations, are provided to demonstrate the capabilities of CAC. The simulation results provide visual evidence and reveal the underlying physics of a variety of phenomena including: phonon focusing, wave interference, dislocation drag, interfacial Kapitza resistance caused by quasi-ballistic phonon transport, etc. A new method to quantify fluxes in transient transport processes is also introduced.

Casimir Self-Entropy of a Spherical Electromagnetic $δ$-Function Shell

In this paper we continue our program of computing Casimir self-entropies of idealized electrical bodies. Here we consider an electromagnetic $δ$-function sphere ("semitransparent sphere") whose electric susceptibility has a transverse polarization with arbitrary strength. Dispersion is incorporated by a plasma-like model. In the strong coupling limit, a perfectly conducting spherical shell is realized. We compute the entropy for both low and high temperatures. The TE self-entropy is negative as expected, but the TM self-entropy requires ultraviolet and infrared subtractions, and, surprisingly, is only positive for sufficiently strong coupling. Results are robust under different regularization schemes.

Quarkonium as relativistic bound state on the light front

We study charmonium and bottomonium as relativistic bound states in a light-front quantized Hamiltonian formalism. The effective Hamiltonian is based on light-front holography. We use a recently proposed longitudinal confinement to complete the soft-wall holographic potential for the heavy flavors. The spin structure is generated from the one-gluon exchange interaction with a running coupling. The adoption of asymptotic freedom improves the spectroscopy compared with previous light-front results. Within this model, we compute the mass spectroscopy, decay constants and the r.m.s. radii. We also present a detailed study of the obtained light-front wave functions and use the wave functions to compute the light-cone distributions, specifically the distribution amplitudes and parton distribution functions. Overall, our model provides a reasonable description of the heavy quarkonia.
