The polarization and the fundamental sensitivity of $^{39}$K ($^{133}$Cs)-$^{85}$Rb-$^{4}$He hybrid optical pumping spin exchange relaxation free atomic magnetometers

The hybrid optical pumping spin exchange relaxation free (SERF) atomic magnetometers can realize ultrahigh sensitivity measurement of magnetic field and inertia. We have studied the $^{\text{85}}$Rb polarization of two types of hybrid optical pumping SERF magnetometers based on $^{\text{39}}$K-$^{\text{85}}$Rb-$^{\text{4}}$He and $^{\text{133}}$Cs-$^{\text{85}}$Rb-$^{\text{4}}$He respectively. Then we found that $^{\text{85}}$Rb polarization varies with the number density of buffer gas $^{\text{4}}$He and quench gas N$_{\text{2}}$, pumping rate of pump beam and cell temperature respectively, which will provide an experimental guide for the design of the magnetometer. We obtain a general formula on the fundamental sensitivity of the hybrid optical pumping SERF magnetometer due to shot-noise. The formula describes that the fundamental sensitivity of the magnetometer varies with the number density of buffer gas and quench gas, the pumping rate of pump beam, external magnetic field, cell effective radius, measurement volume, cell temperature and measurement time. We obtain a highest fundamental sensitivity of $1.5073$ $aT/Hz^{1/2}$ ($1$ $aT=10^{-18}$ $T$) with $^{\text{39}}$K-$^{\text{85}}$Rb-$^{\text{4}}$He magnetometer between above two types of magnetometers when $^{\text{85}}$Rb polarization is $0.1116$. We estimate the fundamental sensitivity limit of the hybrid optical pumping SERF magnetometer to be superior to $1.8359\times10^{-2}$ $aT/Hz^{1/2}$, which is higher than the shot-noise-limited sensitivity of $1$ $aT/Hz^{1/2}$ of K SERF atomic magnetometer.

Satellite-to-ground quantum key distribution

Quantum key distribution (QKD) uses individual light quanta in quantum superposition states to guarantee unconditional communication security between distant parties. In practice, the achievable distance for QKD has been limited to a few hundred kilometers, due to the channel loss of fibers or terrestrial free space that exponentially reduced the photon rate. Satellite-based QKD promises to establish a global-scale quantum network by exploiting the negligible photon loss and decoherence in the empty out space. Here, we develop and launch a low-Earth-orbit satellite to implement decoy-state QKD with over kHz key rate from the satellite to ground over a distance up to 1200 km, which is up to 20 orders of magnitudes more efficient than that expected using an optical fiber (with 0.2 dB/km loss) of the same length. The establishment of a reliable and efficient space-to-ground link for faithful quantum state transmission constitutes a key milestone for global-scale quantum networks.

On collapsing Calabi-Yau fibrations

We develop some techniques to study the adiabatic limiting behaviour of Calabi-Yau metrics on the total space of a fibration, and obtain strong control near the singular fibres by imposing restrictions on the singularity types. We prove a uniform lower bound on the metric up to the singular fibre, under fairly general hypotheses. Assuming a result in pluripotential theory, we prove a uniform fibre diameter bound for a Lefschetz K3 fibred Calabi-Yau 3-fold, which reduces the study of the collapsing metric to a locally non-collapsed situation, and we identify the Gromov-Hausdorff limit of the rescaled neighbourhood of the singular fibre.

First-principles study on various point defects formed by hydrogen and helium atoms in tungsten

The different point defects formed by two hydrogen atoms or two helium atoms in tungsten were investigated through first-principles calculation. The energetically favorable site for a hydrogen atom is tetrahedral interstitial site while substitutional site is the most preferred site for a helium atom. The formation energies of two hydrogen or helium atoms are determined by their positions, and there are not a multiple of a single atom's. After relaxation, two adjacent hydrogen atoms are away from each other while helium atoms are close to. The reasons for the interaction between two hydrogen or helium atoms are also discussed.

Robust Variable and Interaction Selection for Logistic Regression and Multiple Index Models

We propose Stepwise cOnditional likelihood variable selection for Discriminant Analysis (SODA) to detect both main and quadratic interaction effects in logistic regression and quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA) models. In the forward stage, SODA adds in important predictors evaluated based on their overall contributions, whereas in the backward stage SODA removes unimportant terms so as to optimize the extended Bayesian Information Criterion (EBIC). Compared with existing methods on QDA variable selections, SODA can deal with high-dimensional data with the number of predictors much larger than the sample size and does not require the joint normality assumption on predictors, leading to much enhanced robustness. We further extend SODA to conduct variable selection and model fitting for multiple index models. Compared with existing variable selection methods based on the Sliced Inverse Regression (SIR) (Li 1991), SODA requires neither the linearity nor the constant variance condition and is much more robust. Our theoretical analyses establish the variable-selection consistency of SODA under high-dimensional settings, and our simulation studies as well as real-data applications demonstrate superior performances of SODA in dealing with non-Gaussian design matrices in both classification problems and multiple index models.

A new complete Calabi-Yau metric on $\mathbb{C}^3$

Motivated by the study of collapsing Calabi-Yau threefolds with a Lefschetz K3 fibration, we construct a complete Calabi-Yau metric on $\mathbb{C}^3$ with maximal volume growth, which in the appropriate scale is expected to model the collapsing metric near the nodal point. This new Calabi-Yau metric has singular tangent cone at infinity, and its Riemannian geometry has certain non-standard features near the singularity of the tangent cone $\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{C}$, which are more typical of adiabatic limit problems. The proof uses an existence result in H-J. Hein's PhD thesis to perturb an asymptotic approximate solution into an actual solution, and the main difficulty lies in correcting the slowly decaying error terms.

Comparison of two Minkowski-space approaches to heavy quarkonia

In this work we compare mass spectra and decay constants obtained from two recent, independent, and fully relativistic approaches to the quarkonium bound-state problem: the Hamiltonian basis light-front quantization (BLFQ) approach, where light-front wave functions are naturally formulated; and, the covariant spectator theory (CST), based on a reorganization of the Bethe-Salpeter equation. Even though conceptually different, both solutions are obtained in Minkowski space. Comparisons of decay constants for more than ten states of charmonium and bottomonium show favorable agreement between the two approaches as well as with experiment where available. We also apply the Brodsky-Huang-Lepage prescription to convert the CST amplitudes into functions of light-front variables. This provides an ideal opportunity to investigate the similarities and differences at the level of the wave functions. Several qualitative features are observed in remarkable agreement between the two approaches even for the rarely addressed excited states. Leading twist distribution amplitudes as well as parton distribution functions of heavy quarkonia are also analyzed.

Discovering Multiple Truths with a Hybrid Model

Many data management applications require integrating information from multiple sources. The sources may not be accurate and provide erroneous values. We thus have to identify the true values from conflicting observations made by the sources. The problem is further complicated when there may exist multiple truths (e.g., a book written by several authors). In this paper we propose a model called Hybrid that jointly makes two decisions: how many truths there are, and what they are. It considers the conflicts between values as important evidence for ruling out wrong values, while keeps the flexibility of allowing multiple truths. In this way, Hybrid is able to achieve both high precision and high recall.

Spatial-Temporal Recurrent Neural Network for Emotion Recognition

Emotion analysis is a crucial problem to endow artifact machines with real intelligence in many large potential applications. As external appearances of human emotions, electroencephalogram (EEG) signals and video face signals are widely used to track and analyze human's affective information. According to their common characteristics of spatial-temporal volumes, in this paper we propose a novel deep learning framework named spatial-temporal recurrent neural network (STRNN) to unify the learning of two different signal sources into a spatial-temporal dependency model. In STRNN, to capture those spatially cooccurrent variations of human emotions, a multi-directional recurrent neural network (RNN) layer is employed to capture longrange contextual cues by traversing the spatial region of each time slice from multiple angles. Then a bi-directional temporal RNN layer is further used to learn discriminative temporal dependencies from the sequences concatenating spatial features of each time slice produced from the spatial RNN layer. To further select those salient regions of emotion representation, we impose sparse projection onto those hidden states of spatial and temporal domains, which actually also increases the model discriminant ability because of this global consideration. Consequently, such a two-layer RNN model builds spatial dependencies as well as temporal dependencies of the input signals. Experimental results on the public emotion datasets of EEG and facial expression demonstrate the proposed STRNN method is more competitive over those state-of-the-art methods.

The Stochastic Matching Problem: Beating Half with a Non-Adaptive Algorithm

In the stochastic matching problem, we are given a general (not necessarily bipartite) graph $G(V,E)$, where each edge in $E$ is realized with some constant probability $p > 0$ and the goal is to compute a bounded-degree (bounded by a function depending only on $p$) subgraph $H$ of $G$ such that the expected maximum matching size in $H$ is close to the expected maximum matching size in $G$. The algorithms in this setting are considered non-adaptive as they have to choose the subgraph $H$ without knowing any information about the set of realized edges in $G$. Originally motivated by an application to kidney exchange, the stochastic matching problem and its variants have received significant attention in recent years. The state-of-the-art non-adaptive algorithms for stochastic matching achieve an approximation ratio of $\frac{1}{2}-ε$ for any $ε> 0$, naturally raising the question that if $1/2$ is the limit of what can be achieved with a non-adaptive algorithm. In this work, we resolve this question by presenting the first algorithm for stochastic matching with an approximation guarantee that is strictly better than $1/2$: the algorithm computes a subgraph $H$ of $G$ with the maximum degree $O(\frac{\log{(1/ p)}}{p})$ such that the ratio of expected size of a maximum matching in realizations of $H$ and $G$ is at least $1/2+δ_0$ for some absolute constant $δ_0 > 0$. The degree bound on $H$ achieved by our algorithm is essentially the best possible (up to an $O(\log{(1/p)})$ factor) for any constant factor approximation algorithm, since an $Ω(\frac{1}{p})$ degree in $H$ is necessary for a vertex to acquire at least one incident edge in a realization.

Multi-Camera Action Dataset for Cross-Camera Action Recognition Benchmarking

Action recognition has received increasing attention from the computer vision and machine learning communities in the last decade. To enable the study of this problem, there exist a vast number of action datasets, which are recorded under controlled laboratory settings, real-world surveillance environments, or crawled from the Internet. Apart from the "in-the-wild" datasets, the training and test split of conventional datasets often possess similar environments conditions, which leads to close to perfect performance on constrained datasets. In this paper, we introduce a new dataset, namely Multi-Camera Action Dataset (MCAD), which is designed to evaluate the open view classification problem under the surveillance environment. In total, MCAD contains 14,298 action samples from 18 action categories, which are performed by 20 subjects and independently recorded with 5 cameras. Inspired by the well received evaluation approach on the LFW dataset, we designed a standard evaluation protocol and benchmarked MCAD under several scenarios. The benchmark shows that while an average of 85% accuracy is achieved under the closed-view scenario, the performance suffers from a significant drop under the cross-view scenario. In the worst case scenario, the performance of 10-fold cross validation drops from 87.0% to 47.4%.

Ballistic-diffusive Phonon Heat Transport across Grain Boundaries

The propagation of a heat pulse in a single crystal and across grain boundaries (GBs) is simulated using a concurrent atomistic-continuum method furnished with a coherent phonon pulse model. With a heat pulse constructed based on a Bose-Einstein distribution of phonons, this work has reproduced the phenomenon of phonon focusing in single and polycrystalline materials. Simulation results provide visual evidence that the propagation of a heat pulse in crystalline solids with or without GBs is partially ballistic and partially diffusive, i.e., there is a co-existence of ballistic and diffusive thermal transport, with the long-wavelength phonons traveling ballistically while the short-wavelength phonons scatter with each other and travel diffusively. To gain a quantitative understanding of GB thermal resistance, the kinetic energy transmitted across GBs is monitored on the fly and the time-dependent energy transmission for each specimen is measured; the contributions of coherent and incoherent phonon transport to the energy transmission are estimated. Simulation results reveal that the presence of GBs modifies the nature of thermal transport, with the coherent long-wavelength phonons dominating the heat conduction in materials with GBs. In addition, it is found the phonon-GB interaction can result in the reconstruction of the GBs.

Diffractive charmonium spectrum in high energy collisions in the basis light-front quantization approach

Using the charmonium light-front wavefunctions obtained by diagonalizing an effective Hamiltonian with the one-gluon exchange interaction and a confining potential inspired by light-front holography in the basis light-front quantization formalism, we compute production of charmonium states in diffractive deep inelastic scattering and ultra-peripheral heavy ion collisions within the dipole picture. Our method allows us to predict yields of all vector charmonium states below the open flavor thresholds in high-energy deep inelastic scattering, proton-nucleus and ultra-peripheral heavy ion collisions, without introducing any new parameters in the light-front wavefunctions. The obtained charmonium cross section is in reasonable agreement with experimental data at HERA, RHIC and LHC. We observe that the cross-section ratio $σ_{Ψ(2s)}/σ_{J/Ψ}$ reveals significant independence of model parameters.

FISF: Better User Experience using Smaller Bandwidth for Panoramic Virtual Reality Video

The panoramic video is widely used to build virtual reality (VR) and is expected to be one of the next generation Killer-Apps. Transmitting panoramic VR videos is a challenging task because of two problems: 1) panoramic VR videos are typically much larger than normal videos but they need to be transmitted with limited bandwidth in mobile networks. 2) high-resolution and fluent views should be provided to guarantee a superior user experience and avoid side-effects such as dizziness and nausea. To address these two problems, we propose a novel interactive streaming technology, namely Focus-based Interactive Streaming Framework (FISF). FISF consists of three parts: 1) we use the classic clustering algorithm DBSCAN to analyze real user data for Video Focus Detection (VFD); 2) we propose a Focus-based Interactive Streaming Technology (FIST), including a static version and a dynamic version; 3) we propose two optimization methods: focus merging and prefetch strategy. Experimental results show that FISF significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art. The paper is submitted to Sigcomm 2017, VR/AR Network on 31 Mar 2017 at 10:44:04am EDT.

Group field theory for quantum gravity minimally coupled to a scalar field

We construct a group field theory model for quantum gravity minimally coupled to relativistic scalar fields, defining as well a corresponding discrete gravity path integral (and, implicitly, a coupled spin foam model) in its Feynman expansion. We also analyze a number of variations of the same model, the corresponding discrete gravity path integrals, its generalization to the coupling of multiple scalar fields and discuss its possible applications to the extraction of effective cosmological dynamics from the full quantum gravity formalism, in the context of group field theory condensate cosmology.

Quarkonium wave functions on the light front

We study heavy quarkonium within the light-front Hamiltonian formalism. Our effective Hamiltonian is based on the holographic QCD confining potential and the one-gluon exchange interaction with a running coupling. The obtained spectra are compared with experimental measurements. We present a set of light-front wave functions, which exhibit rich structure and are consistent with the nonrelativistic picture. Finally, we use the wave functions to compute the charge and mass radii.

Diffractive molecular orbital tomography

High harmonic generation in the interaction of femtosecond lasers with atoms and molecules opens the path to molecular orbital tomography and to probe the electronic dynamics with attosecond-Ångström resolutions. Molecular orbital tomography requires both the amplitude and phase of the high harmonics. Yet the measurement of phases requires sophisticated techniques and represents formidable challenges at present. Here we report a novel scheme, called diffractive molecular orbital tomography, to retrieve the molecular orbital solely from the amplitude of high harmonics without measuring any phase information. We have applied this method to image the molecular orbitals of N$_2$, CO$_2$ and C$_2$H$_2$. The retrieved orbital is further improved by taking account the correction of Coulomb potential. The diffractive molecular orbital tomography scheme, removing the roadblock of phase measurement, significantly simplifies the molecular orbital tomography procedure and paves an efficient and robust way to the imaging of more complex molecules.

Particle distribution in intense fields in a light-front Hamiltonian approach

We study the real-time evolution of an electron influenced by intense electromagnetic fields using the time-dependent basis light-front quantization (tBLFQ) framework. We focus on demonstrating the non-perturbative feature of the tBLFQ approach through a realistic application of the strong coupling QED problem, in which the electromagnetic fields are generated by an ultra-relativistic nucleus. We calculate transitions of an electron influenced by such electromagnetic fields and we show agreement with light-front perturbation theory when the atomic number of the nucleus is small. We compare tBLFQ simulations with perturbative calculations for nuclei with different atomic numbers, and obtain the significant higher-order contributions for heavy nuclei. The simulated real-time evolution of the momentum distribution of an electron evolving inside the strong electromagnetic fields exhibits significant non-perturbative corrections comparing to light-front perturbation theory calculations. The formalism used in this investigation can be extended to QCD problems in heavy ion collisions and electron ion collisions.
