A geometric construction of tight Gabor frames with multivariate compactly supported smooth windows

The geometry of fundamental domains of lattices was used by Han and Wang to construct multivariate Gabor frames for separable lattices. We build upon their results to obtain Gabor frames with smooth and compactly supported window functions. For this purpose we study pairs of lattices which have equal density and allow for a common compact and star-shaped fundamental domain. The results are then extended to a larger class of lattices via symplectic equivalence.

Gate-Controlled Ionization and Screening of Cobalt Adatoms on a Graphene Surface

We describe scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) measurements performed on individual cobalt (Co) atoms deposited onto backgated graphene devices. We find that Co adatoms on graphene can be ionized by either the application of a global backgate voltage or by the application of a local electric field from a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip. Large screening clouds are observed to form around Co adatoms ionized in this way, and we observe that some intrinsic graphene defects display a similar behavior. Our results provide new insight into charged impurity scattering in graphene, as well as the possibility of using graphene devices as chemical sensors.

Fragmentation at the Earliest Phase of Massive Star Formation

We present 1.3mm continuum and spectral line images of two massive molecular clumps P1 and P2 in the G28.34+0.06 region with the Submillimeter Array. While the two clumps contain masses of 1000 and 880 \msun, respectively, P1 has a luminosity $< 10^2$ \lsun, and a lower gas temperature and smaller line width than P2. Thus, P1 appears to be at a much earlier stage of massive star formation than P2. The high resolution SMA observations reveal two distinctive cores in P2 with masses of 97 and 49 \msun, respectively. The 4 GHz spectral bandpass captures line emission from CO isotopologues, SO, CH$_3$OH, and CH$_3$CN, similar to hot molecular cores harboring massive young stars. The P1 clump, on the other hand, is resolved into five cores along the filament with masses from 22 to 64 \msun and an average projected separation of 0.19 pc. Except $^{12}$CO, no molecular line emission is detected toward the P1 cores at a 1$σ$ rms of 0.1 K. Since strong $^{12}$CO and C$^{18}$O emissions are seen with the single dish telescope at a resolution of 11$''$, the non-detection of these lines with the SMA indicates a depletion factor upto $10^3$. While the spatial resolution of the SMA is better than the expected Jeans length, the masses in P1 cores are much larger than the thermal Jeans mass, indicating the importance of turbulence and/or magnetic fields in cloud fragmentation. The hierarchical structures in the P1 region provide a glimpse of the initial phase of massive star and cluster formation.

The Three Hat Problem

In this paper we study the Three Hat Problem which appeared in Puzzle Corner of the Technology Review magazine. This puzzle gives a scenario in which three players wearing hats are sitting together and each hat can be seen by everyone except the player that is wearing that hat. Each player is told that all of the hats contain a positive integer and that two of the integers add to the third. In an ordered, turn-wise, modular fashion, each player truthfully states whether or not he knows his integer. We give a strategy which allows for one of the players to solve for his integer for all possible integer configurations of the puzzle and prove it is the optimal such strategy.

Simultaneous Translational and Multiplicative Tiling and Wavelet Sets in R^2

Simultaneous tiling for several different translational sets has been studied rather extensively, particularly in connection with the Steinhaus problem. The study of orthonormal wavelets in recent years, particularly for arbitrary dilation matrices, has led to the study of multiplicative tilings by the powers of a matrix. In this paper we consider the following simultaneous tiling problem: Given a lattice in $Ł\in \R^d$ and a matrix $A\in\GLd$, does there exist a measurable set $T$ such that both $\{T+α: α\inŁ\}$ and $\{A^nT: n\in\Z\}$ are tilings of $\R^d$? This problem comes directly from the study of wavelets and wavelet sets. Such a $T$ is known to exist if $A$ is expanding. When $A$ is not expanding the problem becomes much more subtle. Speegle \cite{Spe03} exhibited examples in which such a $T$ exists for some $Ł$ and nonexpanding $A$ in $\R^2$. In this paper we give a complete solution to this problem in $\R^2$.

Quantum integers and cyclotomy

A sequence of functions {f_n(q)}_{n=1}^{\infty} satisfies the functional equation for multiplication of quantum integers if f_{mn}(q) = f_m(q)f_n(q^m) for all positive integers m and n. This paper describes the structure of all sequences of rational functions with rational coefficients that satisfy this functional equation.

Charge Distributions in Metallic Alloys: a Charge Excess Functional theory approach

The distribution of local charge excesses (DLC) in metallic alloys, previously obtained as a result of the analysis of order N electronic structure calculations, is derived from a variational principle. A phenomenological Charge Excess Functional (CEF) theory is obtained which is determined by three concentration dependent, material specific, parameters that can be obtained from {\it ab initio} calculations. The theory requires modest computational efforts and reproduces with an excellent accuracy the DLC and the electrostatic energies of ordered, substitutionally disordered or segregating metallic alloys and, hence, can be considered an efficient approach alternative to conventional electronic structure calculations. The substantial reduction of computing time opens new perspectives for the understanding of metallic systems and their mechanical properties.

Substitution Delone Sets

This paper addresses the problem of describing aperiodic discrete structures that have a self-similar or self-affine structure. Substitution Delone set families are families of Delone sets (X_1, ..., X_n) in R^d that satisfy an inflation functional equation under the action of an expanding integer matrix in R^d. This paper studies such functional equation in which each X_i is a discrete multiset (a set whose elements are counted with a finite multiplicity). It gives necessary conditions on the coefficients of the functional equation for discrete solutions to exist. It treats the case where the equation has Delone set solutions. Finally, it gives a large set of examples showing limits to the results obtained.

On spectral Cantor measures

A probability measure in R^d is called a spectral measure if it has an orthonormal basis consisting of exponentials. In this paper we study spectral Cantor measures. We establish a large class of such measures and give a necessary and sufficient condition on the spectrum of a spectral Cantor measure. This extends the earlier results of Jorgensen-Pedersen and Strichartz.

A characterization of finite sets that tile the integers

We consider the problem of characterizing finite sets which tile the integers by translations. Coven and Meyerowitz (J. Algebra 1999) found necessary and sufficient conditions for a finite set A to tile the integers under the assumption that |A| has at most 2 distinct prime factors. The purpose of this article is to settle, for the first time, certain three-prime cases.

Transition-metal interactions in aluminum-rich intermetallics

The extension of the first-principles generalized pseudopotential theory (GPT) to transition-metal (TM) aluminides produces pair and many-body interactions that allow efficient calculations of total energies. In aluminum-rich systems treated at the pair-potential level, one practical limitation is a transition-metal over-binding that creates an unrealistic TM-TM attraction at short separations in the absence of balancing many-body contributions. Even with this limitation, the GPT pair potentials have been used effectively in total-energy calculations for Al-TM systems with TM atoms at separations greater than 4 AA. An additional potential term may be added for systems with shorter TM atom separations, formally folding repulsive contributions of the three- and higher-body interactions into the pair potentials, resulting in structure-dependent TM-TM potentials. Towards this end, we have performed numerical ab-initio total-energy calculations using VASP (Vienna Ab Initio Simulation Package) for an Al-Co-Ni compound in a particular quasicrystalline approximant structure. The results allow us to fit a short-ranged, many-body correction of the form a(r_0/r)^{b} to the GPT pair potentials for Co-Co, Co-Ni, and Ni-Ni interactions.

Transferable Tight-Binding Potential for Hydrocarbons

A transferable tight-binding potential has been constructed for heteroatomic systems containing carbon and hydrogen. The electronic degree of freedom is treated explicitly in this potential using a small set of transferable parameters which has been fitted to small hydrocarbons and radicals. Transferability to other higher hydrocarbons were tested by comparison with ab initio calculations and experimental data. The potential can correctly reproduce changes in the electronic configuration as a function of the local bonding geometry around each carbon atom. This type of potential is well suited for computer simulations of covalently bonded systems in both gas-phase and condensed-phase systems.
