Parallax Bundle Adjustment on Manifold with Convexified Initialization

Bundle adjustment (BA) with parallax angle based feature parameterization has been shown to have superior performance over BA using inverse depth or XYZ feature forms. In this paper, we propose an improved version of the parallax BA algorithm (PMBA) by extending it to the manifold domain along with observation-ray based objective function. With this modification, the problem formulation faithfully mimics the projective nature in a camera's image formation, BA is able to achieve better convergence, accuracy and robustness. This is particularly useful in handling diverse outdoor environments and collinear motion modes. Capitalizing on these properties, we further propose a pose-graph simplification to PMBA, with significant dimensionality reduction. This pose-graph model is convex in nature, easy to solve and its solution can serve as a good initial guess to the original BA problem which is intrinsically non-convex. We provide theoretical proof that our global initialization strategy can guarantee a near-optimal solution. Using a series of experiments involving diverse environmental conditions and motions, we demonstrate PMBA's superior convergence performance in comparison to other BA methods. We also show that, without incremental initialization or via third-party information, our global initialization process helps to bootstrap the full BA successfully in various scenarios, sequential or out-of-order, including some datasets from the "Bundle Adjustment in the Large" database.

Griffiths phase and symmetry breaking in the hidden-order phase of URu2Si2

The heavy-fermion compound URu2Si2 exhibits a hidden-order phase below the temperature, ~ 17.5 K. In spite of intense research for past three decades, no consensus on the order parameter exists and the nature has posed a long-standing mystery. Here we report the discovery of a Griffiths phase within the hidden-order phase, characterized by residual short-range correlations on the collapse of long-range orders due to the dilution effects. In the Griffiths phase scenario, strong evidence are provided for those cluster-like spins, such as the unique power-law behavior of magnetic susceptibility and specific heat as well as the frequency dispersion of AC susceptibility. In this way, the existence of an order parameter is excluded, and the hidden order has a significant kinship with the long-range large-moment antiferromagnetism which is accessible by tuning the hydrostatic pressure or the chemical pressure (i.e., isoelectronic Fe doping). Moreover, an unidirectional anisotropy of resistivity measurements in rotating magnetic fields is observed in the hidden-order phase. The anisotropic magnetoresistance and the associated broken symmetries directly reflect the freezing behavior of at least part of magnetic clusters. Thus, the demonstrations of the Griffiths phase as an alternative proposal for the hidden-order phase of URu2Si2 are very promising, challenging the understanding of exotic electronic states in correlated matter and quantum materials.

D-shaped photonic crystal fiber plasmonic refractive index sensor based on gold grating

In this work, we proposed a high resolution D-shaped photonic crystal fiber (PCF) surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor based on gold grating. Gold grating is introduced to modulate the resonance wavelength and enhance the refractive index (RI) sensitivity. Structure parameters of PCF and gold grating are analyzed by finite element method (FEM) for optimizing the SPR sensor. The simulation results indicate that air hole pitch, air hole diameter and gold thickness and grating constant have little influence on the sensitivity of refractive index, which reduces the requirement of precise processing. For improving the resolution of RI sensing, two-feature (2F) interrogation method which combines wavelength interrogation and amplitude interrogation is used and the maximum theoretical resolution of SPR sensor reaches to 5.98*10-6 RIU in range of 1.36-1.38 and the wavelength sensitivity reaches to 3340nm/RIU. The proposed SPR sensor shows potential applications on developing a high-sensitivity, real time and fast-response SPR-RI sensor.

Speaker Embedding Extraction with Phonetic Information

Speaker embeddings achieve promising results on many speaker verification tasks. Phonetic information, as an important component of speech, is rarely considered in the extraction of speaker embeddings. In this paper, we introduce phonetic information to the speaker embedding extraction based on the x-vector architecture. Two methods using phonetic vectors and multi-task learning are proposed. On the Fisher dataset, our best system outperforms the original x-vector approach by 20% in EER, and by 15%, 15% in minDCF08 and minDCF10, respectively. Experiments conducted on NIST SRE10 further demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Superconducting and magnetic phase diagram of RbEuFe4As4 and CsEuFe4As4 at high pressure

The recently discovered (Rb,Cs)EuFe4As4 compounds exhibit an unusual combination of superconductivity (Tc = 35 K) and ferromagnetism (Tm = 15 K). We have performed a series of x-ray diffraction, ac magnetic susceptibility, dc magnetization, and electrical resistivity measurements on both RbEuFe4As4 and CsEuFe4As4 to pressures as high as 30 GPa. We find that the superconductivity onset is suppressed monotonically by pressure while the magnetic transition is enhanced at initial rates of dTm/dP = 1.7 K/GPa and 1.5 K/GPa for RbEuFe4As4 and CsEuFe4As4, respectively. Near 7 GPa, Tc onset and Tm become comparable. At higher pressures, signatures of bulk superconductivity gradually disappear. Room temperature x-ray diffraction measurements suggest the onset of a transition from tetragonal (T) to a half collapsed-tetragonal (hcT) phase at 10 GPa (RbEuFe4As4) and 12 GPa (CsEuFe4As4). The ability to tune Tc and Tm into coincidence with relatively modest pressures highlights (Rb,Cs)EuFe4As4 compounds as ideal systems to study the interplay of superconductivity and ferromagnetism.

Calculating the transport properties of magnetic materials from first-principles including thermal and alloy disorder, non-collinearity and spin-orbit coupling

A density functional theory based two-terminal scattering formalism that includes spin-orbit coupling and spin non-collinearity is described. An implementation using tight-binding muffin-tin orbitals combined with extensive use of sparse matrix techniques allows a wide variety of inhomogeneous structures to be flexibly modelled with various types of disorder including temperature induced lattice and spin disorder. The methodology is illustrated with calculations of the temperature dependent resistivity and magnetization damping for the important substitutional disordered magnetic alloy Permalloy (Py), Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$. Comparison of calculated results with recent experimental measurements of the damping (including its temperature dependence) indicates that the scattering approach captures the most important contributions to this important property.

Dynamic spin-lattice coupling and nematic fluctuations in NaFeAs

We use inelastic neutron scattering to study acoustic phonons and spin excitations in single crystals of NaFeAs, a parent compound of iron pnictide superconductors. NaFeAs exhibits a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural transition at $T_s\approx 58$ K and a collinear antiferromagnetic (AF) order at $T_N\approx 45$ K. While longitudinal and out-of-plane transverse acoustic phonons behave as expected, the in-plane transverse acoustic phonons reveal considerable softening on cooling to $T_s$, and then harden on approaching $T_N$ before saturating below $T_N$. In addition, we find that spin-spin correlation lengths of low-energy magnetic excitations within the FeAs layer and along the $c$-axis increase dramatically below $T_s$, and show weak anomaly across $T_N$. These results suggest that the electronic nematic phase present in the paramagnetic tetragonal phase is closely associated with dynamic spin-lattice coupling, possibly arising from the one-phonon-two-magnon mechanism.

Backward lasing of singly ionized nitrogen ions pumped by femtosecond laser pulses

We report on the observation of backward lasing at 391.4 nm of nitrogen ions pumped by linearly polarized intense femtosecond pulses at 800 nm. The strongly enhanced spectral intensity at 391.4 nm, as well as the amplification of an externally injected backward seeding pulse, confirm that the backward 391.4 nm signal is due to optical amplification in the gas plasma. Compared to the forward emission at 391.4 nm, the optimal backward emission is achieved at a lower gas pressure around 10 mbar, which is due to asymmetry of the backward and forward directions rooted in the traveling excitation geometry. This method, using the widely available 800 nm femtosecond pulses as a pump laser, provides a promising scheme for the generation of backward air laser, which holds a unique potential for optical remote sensing.

Interface induced Zeeman-protected superconductivity in ultrathin crystalline lead films

Two dimensional (2D) superconducting systems are of great importance to exploring exotic quantum physics. Recent development of fabrication techniques stimulates the studies of high quality single crystalline 2D superconductors, where intrinsic properties give rise to unprecedented physical phenomena. Here we report the observation of Zeeman-type spin-orbit interaction protected superconductivity (Zeeman-protected superconductivity) in 4 monolayer (ML) to 6 ML crystalline Pb films grown on striped incommensurate (SIC) Pb layers on Si(111) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Anomalous large in-plane critical field far beyond the Pauli limit is detected, which can be attributed to the Zeeman-protected superconductivity due to the in-plane inversion symmetry breaking at the interface. Our work demonstrates that in superconducting heterostructures the interface can induce Zeeman-type spin-orbit interaction (SOI) and modulate the superconductivity.

Flexible Installability of Android Apps with App-level Virtualization based Decomposition

With the popularity of smartphones, users are heavily dependent on mobile applications for daily work and entertainments. However, mobile apps are becoming more and more complicated with more features and increasing size, part of which may be redundant to users. Due to the limitation of current installation mechanism, users have to download full-size applications instead of enjoy only the wanted features. Such full-size apps may consume more resources, including CPU, memory, and energy, which may hurt users' enthusiasm for further installation. We first conduct an empirical study to characterize used features when users interact with mobile applications, and find that users only consume a small set features of target apps. To address this problem, we present AppStarscream, which offers to decompose and run Android apps with app-level virtualization. We have implemented a prototype system and evaluated it with real-world apps showing that AppStarscream is efficient and practical.

Holoscopic 3D Micro-Gesture Database for Wearable Device Interaction

With the rapid development of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technology, human-computer interaction (HCI) has been greatly improved for gaming interaction of AR and VR control. The finger micro-gesture is one of the important interactive methods for HCI applications such as in the Google Soli and Microsoft Kinect projects. However, the progress in this research is slow due to the lack of high quality public available database. In this paper, holoscopic 3D camera is used to capture high quality micro-gesture images and a new unique holoscopic 3D micro-gesture (HoMG) database is produced. The principle of the holoscopic 3D camera is based on the fly viewing system to see the objects. HoMG database recorded the image sequence of 3 conventional gestures from 40 participants under different settings and conditions. For the purpose of micro-gesture recognition, HoMG has a video subset with 960 videos and a still image subset with 30635 images. Initial micro-gesture recognition on both subsets has been conducted using traditional 2D image and video features and popular classifiers and some encouraging performance has been achieved. The database will be available for the research communities and speed up the research in this area.

RbEu(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_4$As$_4$: From a ferromagnetic superconductor to a superconducting ferromagnet

The intrinsically hole-doped RbEuFe$_4$As$_4$ exhibits bulk superconductivity at $T_{\mathrm{sc}}=36.5$ K and ferromagnetic ordering in the Eu sublattice at $T_\mathrm{m}=15$ K. Here we present a hole-compensation study by introducing extra itinerant electrons via a Ni substitution in the ferromagnetic superconductor RbEuFe$_4$As$_4$ with $T_{\mathrm{sc}}>T_{\mathrm{m}}$. With the Ni doping, $T_{\mathrm{sc}}$ decreases rapidly, and the Eu-spin ferromagnetism and its $T_{\mathrm{m}}$ remain unchanged. Consequently, the system RbEu(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_4$As$_4$ transforms into a superconducting ferromagnet with $T_{\mathrm{m}}>T_{\mathrm{sc}}$ for $0.07\leq x\leq0.08$. The occurrence of superconducting ferromagnets is attributed to the decoupling between Eu$^{2+}$ spins and superconducting Cooper pairs. The superconducting and magnetic phase diagram is established, which additionally includes a recovered yet suppressed spin-density-wave state.

Demystifying Mobile Web Browsing under Multiple Protocols

With the popularity of mobile devices, such as smartphones, tablets, users prefer visiting Web pages on mobile devices. Meanwhile, HTTP(S) plays as the major protocol to deliver Web contents, and has served the Web well for more than 15 years. However, as the Web pages grow increasingly complex to provide more content and functionality, the shortcomings and inflexibility of HTTP become more and more urgent to solve, e.g., the sluggish page load, insecure content, redundant transfer, etc. SPDY and HTTP/2 are promoted to solve the shortcomings and inflexibilities of HTTP/1.x. We are interested in how Web pages perform on smartphones with different protocols, including HTTP, HTTPS, SPDY, and HTTP/2. In this paper, we divide our experiments into two parts. First, in order to simplify our analysis, we develop our own HTTP client ignoring complicated process in real browsers to fetch synthetic Web pages with pre-specified object sizes and object numbers with different protocols, respectively. Meanwhile, we emulate different network conditions between client and server using Traffic Control. In order to test with real browsers, we clone Alexa top 200 websites, which have the corresponding mobile version, into our local host. Meanwhile, we control mobile Chrome browser to load those Web pages with different protocols and emulate different network conditions using Traffic Control. We identify how Web page characteristics and network conditions affect Web performance on smartphones for each protocol. We also conduct experiments on a low-end device to observe if a less powerful processor could affect Web page performance for each protocol.

Femtosecond two-photon-excited backward lasing of atomic hydrogen in flame

We report on an observation of bi-directional 656 nm lasing action of atomic hydrogen in premixed CH4/air flame induced by resonant femtosecond 205 nm two-photon excitation. In particular, the backward-propagating lasing pulse is systematically characterized in the spectral, spatial and temporal domains for the sake of single-ended diagnostic. Its picosecond-scale duration enables spatially resolved concentration measurements of hydrogen atoms in millimeter range, which is successfully demonstrated using two narrow welding flames.

Hierarchical compositional feature learning

We introduce the hierarchical compositional network (HCN), a directed generative model able to discover and disentangle, without supervision, the building blocks of a set of binary images. The building blocks are binary features defined hierarchically as a composition of some of the features in the layer immediately below, arranged in a particular manner. At a high level, HCN is similar to a sigmoid belief network with pooling. Inference and learning in HCN are very challenging and existing variational approximations do not work satisfactorily. A main contribution of this work is to show that both can be addressed using max-product message passing (MPMP) with a particular schedule (no EM required). Also, using MPMP as an inference engine for HCN makes new tasks simple: adding supervision information, classifying images, or performing inpainting all correspond to clamping some variables of the model to their known values and running MPMP on the rest. When used for classification, fast inference with HCN has exactly the same functional form as a convolutional neural network (CNN) with linear activations and binary weights. However, HCN's features are qualitatively very different.

The utilization of the chaotic laser with low coherent state ensures high spatial resolution. The experimental results demonstrate a 3.92-cm spatial resolution over a 906-m measurement range. The uncertainty in the measurement of the local Brillouin frequency shift is 1.2MHz. The measurement signal-to-noise ratio is given, which is agreement with the theoretical value.

Magnon-phonon relaxation in yttrium iron garnet from first principles

We combine the theoretical method of calculating spin wave excitation with the finite-temperature modeling and calculate the magnon-phonon relaxation time in the technologically important material Yttrium iron garnet (YIG) from first principles. The finite lifetime of magnon excitation is found to arise from the fluctuation of the exchange interaction of magnetic atoms in YIG. At room temperature, the magnon spectra have significant broadening that is used to extract the magnon-phonon relaxation time quantitatively. The latter is a phenomenological parameter of great importance in YIG-based spintronics research. We find that the magnon-phonon relaxation time for the optical magnon is a constant while that for the acoustic magnon is proportional to $1/k^2$ in the long-wavelength regime.
