Comparison of Multiple Features and Modeling Methods for Text-dependent Speaker Verification

Text-dependent speaker verification is becoming popular in the speaker recognition society. However, the conventional i-vector framework which has been successful for speaker identification and other similar tasks works relatively poorly in this task. Researchers have proposed several new methods to improve performance, but it is still unclear that which model is the best choice, especially when the pass-phrases are prompted during enrollment and test. In this paper, we introduce four modeling methods and compare their performance on the newly published RedDots dataset. To further explore the influence of different frame alignments, Viterbi and forward-backward algorithms are both used in the HMM-based models. Several bottleneck features are also investigated. Our experiments show that, by explicitly modeling the lexical content, the HMM-based modeling achieves good results in the fixed-phrase condition. In the prompted-phrase condition, GMM-HMM and i-vector/HMM are not as successful. In both conditions, the forward-backward algorithm brings more benefits to the i-vector/HMM system. Additionally, we also find that even though bottleneck features perform well for text-independent speaker verification, they do not outperform MFCCs on the most challenging Imposter-Correct trials on RedDots.

Evidence of Spontaneous Vortex Ground State in An Iron-Based Ferromagnetic Superconductor

Spontaneous vortex phase (SVP) is an exotic quantum matter in which quantized superconducting vortices form in the absence of external magnetic field. Although being predicted theoretically nearly 40 years ago, its rigorous experimental verification still appears to be lacking. Here we present low-field magnetic measurements on single crystals of the iron-based ferromagnetic superconductor Eu(Fe$_{0.91}$Rh$_{0.09}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ which undergoes a superconducting transition at $T_\mathrm{sc}$ = 19.6 K followed by a magnetic transition at $T_\mathrm{m}$ = 16.8 K. We observe a characteristic first-order transition from a Meissner state within $T_\mathrm{m}<T<T_\mathrm{sc}$ to an SVP below $T_\mathrm{m}$, under a magnetic field approaching zero. Additional isothermal magnetization and ac magnetization measurements at $T\ll T_\mathrm{sc}$ confirm that the system is intrinsically in a spontaneous-vortex ground state. The unambiguous demonstration of SVP in the title material lays a solid foundation for future imaging and spectroscopic studies on this intriguing quantum matter.

Ultralow thermal conductivity of single crystalline porous silicon nanowires

Porous materials provide a large surface to volume ratio, thereby providing a knob to alter fundamental properties in unprecedented ways. In thermal transport, porous nanomaterials can reduce thermal conductivity by not only enhancing phonon scattering from the boundaries of the pores and therefore decreasing the phonon mean free path, but also by reducing the phonon group velocity. Here we establish a structure-property relationship by measuring the porosity and thermal conductivity of individual electrolessly etched single crystalline silicon nanowires using a novel electron beam heating technique. Such porous silicon nanowires exhibit extremely low diffusive thermal conductivity (as low as 0.33 Wm-1K-1 at 300K for 43% porosity), even lower than that of amorphous silicon. The origin of such ultralow thermal conductivity is understood as a reduction in the phonon group velocity, experimentally verified by measuring the Young modulus, as well as the smallest structural size ever reported in crystalline Silicon (less than 5nm). Molecular dynamics simulations support the observation of a drastic reduction in thermal conductivity of silicon nanowires as a function of porosity. Such porous materials provide an intriguing platform to tune phonon transport, which can be useful in the design of functional materials towards electronics and nano-electromechanical systems.

Ising Superconductivity and Quantum Phase Transition in Macro-Size Monolayer NbSe2

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have a range of unique physics properties and could be used in the development of electronics, photonics, spintronics and quantum computing devices. The mechanical exfoliation technique of micro-size TMD flakes has attracted particular interest due to its simplicity and cost effectiveness. However, for most applications, large area and high quality films are preferred. Furthermore, when the thickness of crystalline films is down to the 2D limit (monolayer), exotic properties can be expected due to the quantum confinement and symmetry breaking. In this paper, we have successfully prepared macro-size atomically flat monolayer NbSe2 films on bilayer graphene terminated surface of 6H-SiC(0001) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) method. The films exhibit an onset superconducting critical transition temperature above 6 K, 2 times higher than that of mechanical exfoliated NbSe2 flakes. Simultaneously, the transport measurements at high magnetic fields reveal that the parallel characteristic field Bc// is at least 4.5 times higher than the paramagnetic limiting field, consistent with Zeeman-protected Ising superconductivity mechanism. Besides, by ultralow temperature electrical transport measurements, the monolayer NbSe2 film shows the signature of quantum Griffiths singularity when approaching the zero-temperature quantum critical point.

Novel Logical Method for Security Analysis of Electronic Payment Protocols

Electronic payment protocols play a vital role in electronic commerce security, which is essential for secure operation of electronic commerce activities. Formal method is an effective way to verify the security of protocols. But current formal method lacks the description and analysis of timeliness in electronic payment protocols. In order to improve analysis ability, a novel approach to analyze security properties such as accountability, fairness and timeliness in electronic payment protocols is proposed in this paper. This approach extends an existing logical method by adding a concise time expression and analysis method. It enables to describe the event time, and extends the time characteristics of logical inference rules. We analyzed the Netbill protocol with the new approach and found that the fairness of the protocol is not satisfied, due to timeliness problem. The result illustrates the new approach is able to analyze the key properties of electronic payment protocols. Furthermore, the new approach can be introduced to analyze other time properties of cryptographic protocols.

Large-area epitaxial growth of MoSe2 via an incandescent molybdenum source

We have developed an incandescent Mo source to fabricate large-area single-crystalline MoSe2 thin films. The as-grown MoSe2 thin films were characterized using transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence, reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and angular resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). A new Raman characteristic peak at 1591 cm-1 was identified. Results from Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence, RHEED and ARPES studies consistently reveal that large-area single crystalline mono-layer of MoSe2 could be achieved by this technique. This technique enjoys several advantages over conventional approaches and could be extended to the growth of other two-dimensional layered materials containing a low-vapor-pressure element.

Teaching Compositionality to CNNs

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have shown great success in computer vision, approaching human-level performance when trained for specific tasks via application-specific loss functions. In this paper, we propose a method for augmenting and training CNNs so that their learned features are compositional. It encourages networks to form representations that disentangle objects from their surroundings and from each other, thereby promoting better generalization. Our method is agnostic to the specific details of the underlying CNN to which it is applied and can in principle be used with any CNN. As we show in our experiments, the learned representations lead to feature activations that are more localized and improve performance over non-compositional baselines in object recognition tasks.

Syndrome-Coupled Rate-Compatible Error-Correcting Codes

Rate-compatible error-correcting codes (ECCs), which consist of a set of extended codes, are of practical interest in both wireless communications and data storage. In this work, we first study the lower bounds for rate-compatible ECCs, thus proving the existence of good rate-compatible codes. Then, we propose a general framework for constructing rate-compatible ECCs based on cosets and syndromes of a set of nested linear codes. We evaluate our construction from two points of view. From a combinatorial perspective, we show that we can construct rate-compatible codes with increasing minimum distances. From a probabilistic point of view, we prove that we are able to construct capacity-achieving rate-compatible codes.

Performance of Optimal Data Shaping Codes

Data shaping is a coding technique that has been proposed to increase the lifetime of flash memory devices. Several data shaping codes have been described in recent work, including endurance codes and direct shaping codes for structured data. In this paper, we study information-theoretic properties of a general class of data shaping codes and prove a separation theorem stating that optimal data shaping can be achieved by the concatenation of optimal lossless compression with optimal endurance coding. We also determine the expansion factor that minimizes the total wear cost. Finally, we analyze the performance of direct shaping codes and establish a condition for their optimality.

Superconductivity at 33 - 37 K in $ALn_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$O$_2$ ($A$ = K and Cs; $Ln$ = Lanthanides)

We have synthesized 10 new iron oxyarsenides, K$Ln_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$O$_2$ ($Ln$ = Gd, Tb, Dy, and Ho) and Cs$Ln_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$O$_2$ ($Ln$ = Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, and Ho), with the aid of lattice-match [between $A$Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($A$ = K and Cs) and $Ln$FeAsO] approach. The resultant compounds possess hole-doped conducting double FeAs layers, [$A$Fe$_4$As$_4$]$^{2-}$, that are separated by the insulating [$Ln_2$O$_2$]$^{2+}$ slabs. Measurements of electrical resistivity and dc magnetic susceptibility demonstrate bulk superconductivity at $T_\mathrm{c}$ = 33 - 37 K. We find that $T_\mathrm{c}$ correlates with the axis ratio $c/a$ for all 12442-type superconductors discovered. Also, $T_\mathrm{c}$ tends to increase with the lattice mismatch, implying a role of lattice instability for the enhancement of superconductivity.

Synthesis, crystal structure and superconductivity in Rb$Ln_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$O$_2$ ($Ln$ = Sm, Tb, Dy and Ho)

We have synthesized four iron-based oxyarsenide superconductors Rb$Ln_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$O$_2$ ($Ln$ = Sm, Tb, Dy and Ho) resulting from the intergrowth of RbFe$_2$As$_2$ and $Ln$FeAsO. It is found that the lattice match between RbFe$_2$As$_2$ and $Ln$FeAsO is crucial for the phase formation. The structural intergrowth leads to double asymmetric Fe$_2$As$_2$ layers that are separated by insulating $Ln_2$O$_2$ slabs. Consequently, the materials are intrinsically doped at a level of 0.25 holes/Fe-atom and, bulk superconductivity emerges at $T_\mathrm{c}$ = 35.8, 34.7, 34.3 and 33.8 K, respectively, for $Ln$ = Sm, Tb, Dy and Ho. Investigation on the correlation between crystal structure and $T_\mathrm{c}$ suggests that interlayer couplings may play an additional role for optimization of superconductivity.

Volume of representations and mapping degree

Given a connected real Lie group and a contractible homogeneous proper $G$--space $X$ furnished with a $G$--invariant volume form, a real valued volume can be assigned to any representation $ρ\colon π_1(M)\to G$ for any oriented closed smooth manifold $M$ of the same dimension as $X$. Suppose that $G$ contains a closed and cocompact semisimple subgroup, it is shown in this paper that the set of volumes is finite for any given $M$. From a perspective of model geometries, examples are investigated and applications with mapping degrees are discussed.

Multi-frequency VLBA Polarimetry of the high-redshift GPS Quasar OQ172

Multi-frequency Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) polarimetry observation of the GHz-Peaked Spectrum (GPS) quasar OQ172 (J1445+0958) has been performed at 1.6, 2.2, 4.8, 8.3 and 15.3 GHz in 2005. Core-jet structures are detected in all bands with the jet strongly bent at about 3 mas from the core. The radio emission of the source is polarised at all five bands. We study the Faraday Rotation in the core and jet components at all five bands, and find good linear fits of Faraday Rotation in the core and jet components at 4.8 and 8.3 GHz. At these two frequencies, the Rotation Measure (RM) is $\sim 2000~\rm rad~m^{-2}$ in the core and $\sim 700~\rm rad~m^{-2}$ in the inner jet components and continues to decrease at the outer jet parts. We find that the depolarisation at 4.8 and 8.3 GHz might be caused by the internal medium in the source. We investigate consistency of the turnover spectra of VLBI components with the Synchrotron Self-Absorption (SSA) and Free-Free Absorption (FFA) models. Although these two models can not be easily distinguished due to the lack of low-frequency data, the physical parameters can be constrained for each model. We find that the large width of the $\rm [OIII]_{5007}$ line is likely caused by a jet interaction with a Narrow Line Region (NLR) medium. The jet bending, significant RM variations, Faraday depolarisation, spectral turnover, and broad line width of $\rm [OIII]_{5007}$ could be closely related, likely caused by the same nucleus medium, presumably NLR.

Origin of the phase change from pyrochlore to perovskite-like layered structure and a new lead free ferroelectric

Materials with formula of A2B2O7 is a famous family with more than 300 compounds, and have abundant properties, like ferroelectric, multiferroic, and photocatalyst properties, etc. Generally, two structures dominate this family, which are pyrochlore and perovskite-like layered (PL) structure. Previously, the structure and properties design of these materials are usually complex, and solid solutions, which complicates the manufacture, as well as introducing complexity in the study of the microscopic origins of the properties. Here, we report that the pyrochlore-PL structure change happened in pure Eu2Ti2O7 under high pressure and temperature, and the formed PL structure will transfer back by heating. These results reveal that the PL structure formed in PL-pyrochlore solid solutions, is due to tuning of the high-pressure formed PL structure in pure pyrochlore compounds to ambient pressure. These results indicate the high pressure and high temperature can be used to manipulate the crystal structures from pyrochlore to PL structure, or vice versa. Furthermore, the PL Eu2Ti2O7 was confirmed as a lead free ferroelectric material for the first time.

Temperature and Angular Dependence of the Upper Critical Field in K$_{2}$Cr$_{3}$As$_{3}$

We report measurements of the upper critical field $H_{\mathrm{c2}}$ as functions of temperature $T$, polar angle $θ$ (of the field direction with respect to the crystallographic $c$ axis), and azimuthal angle $ϕ$ (of the field direction relative to the $a$ axis within the $ab$ plane) for the Cr-based superconductor K$_{2}$Cr$_{3}$As$_{3}$ with a quasi-one-dimensional and non-centrosymmetric crystal structure. We confirm that the anisotropy in $H_{\mathrm{c2}}(T)$ becomes inverse with decreasing temperature. At low temperatures, $H_{\mathrm{c2}}(θ)$ data are featured by two maxima at $θ$ = 0 ($\mathbf{H}\parallel c$) and $π/2$ ($\mathbf{H}\bot c$), which can be quantitatively understood only if uniaxial effective-mass anisotropy and absence of Pauli paramagnetic effect for $\mathbf{H}\bot c$ are taken simultaneously into consideration. The in-plane $H_{\mathrm{c2}}(ϕ)$ profile shows a unique threefold modulation especially at low temperatures. Overall, the characteristic of the $H_{\mathrm{c2}}(θ, ϕ, T)$ data mostly resemble those of the heavy-fermion superconductor UPt$_3$, and we argue in favor of a dominant spin-triplet superconductivity with odd parity in K$_{2}$Cr$_{3}$As$_{3}$.

Deleting Items and Disturbing Mesh Theorems for Riemann Definite Integral and Their Applications

Based on the definition of Riemann definite integral, deleting items and disturbing mesh theorems on Riemann sums are given. After deleting some items or disturbing the mesh of partition, the limit of Riemann sums still converges to Riemann definite integral under specific conditions. These theorems can deal with a class of complicate limitation of sum and product of series of a function, and demonstrate that the geometric intuition of Riemann definite integral is more profound than ordinary thinking of area of curved trapezoid.

Molecular Environments of Three Large Supernova Remnants in the Third Galactic Quadrant: G205.5+0.5, G206.9+2.3, and G213.0-0.6

We present CO observations toward three large supernova remnants (SNRs) in the third Galactic quadrant using the Purple Mountain Observatory Delingha 13.7m radio telescope. The observations are part of the high-resolution CO survey of the Galactic plane between Galactic longitudes l=-10deg to 250deg and latitudes b=-5deg to 5d. CO emission was detected toward the three SNRs: G205.5+0.5 (Monoceros Nebula), G206.9+2.3 (PKS 0646+06), and G213.0-0.6. Both of SNRs G205.5+0.5 and G213.0-0.6 exhibit the morphological agreement (or spatial correspondences) between the remnant and the surrounding molecular clouds (MCs), as well as kinematic signatures of shock perturbation in the molecular gas. We confirm that the two SNRs are physically associated with their ambient MCs and the shock of SNRs is interacting with the dense, clumpy molecular gas. SNR G206.9+2.3, which is close to the northeastern edge of the Monoceros Nebula, displays the spatial coincidence with molecular partial shell structures at VLSR~15km/s. While no significant line broadening has been detected within or near the remnant, the strong morphological correspondence between the SNR and the molecular cavity implies that SNR G206.9+2.3 is probably associated with these CO gas and is evolving in the low-density environment. The physical features of individual SNRs, together with the relationship between SNRs and their nearby objects, are also discussed.

Sparse Representation based Multi-sensor Image Fusion: A Review

As a result of several successful applications in computer vision and image processing, sparse representation (SR) has attracted significant attention in multi-sensor image fusion. Unlike the traditional multiscale transforms (MSTs) that presume the basis functions, SR learns an over-complete dictionary from a set of training images for image fusion, and it achieves more stable and meaningful representations of the source images. By doing so, the SR-based fusion methods generally outperform the traditional MST-based image fusion methods in both subjective and objective tests. In addition, they are less susceptible to mis-registration among the source images, thus facilitating the practical applications. This survey paper proposes a systematic review of the SR-based multi-sensor image fusion literature, highlighting the pros and cons of each category of approaches. Specifically, we start by performing a theoretical investigation of the entire system from three key algorithmic aspects, (1) sparse representation models; (2) dictionary learning methods; and (3) activity levels and fusion rules. Subsequently, we show how the existing works address these scientific problems and design the appropriate fusion rules for each application, such as multi-focus image fusion and multi-modality (e.g., infrared and visible) image fusion. At last, we carry out some experiments to evaluate the impact of these three algorithmic components on the fusion performance when dealing with different applications. This article is expected to serve as a tutorial and source of reference for researchers preparing to enter the field or who desire to employ the sparse representation theory in other fields.
