Implementation of dual time stepping and GMRES of implicit gas-kinetic scheme for unsteady flow simulations

A dual time-stepping strategy of gas-kinetic scheme for the simulation of unsteady flows is introduced in this work. The dual time-stepping strategy is always used in the approaches of unsteady flows, and the ability of dual time-stepping to accelerate the computation with acceptable error tolerance is evident. In our paper, we adopt the techniques of dual time-stepping methods for implicit gas-kinetic scheme to simulate the unsteady flows, which is very popular for the numerical methods based on the Navier-Stokes equations. It is carried out by (a) solving the gas-kinetic scheme in finite volume method; (b) obtaining the inviscid flux Jacobian by Roe scheme; (c) involving the computation of viscous flux Jacobian which is not mentioned in the previous implicit gas-kinetic schemes; (d) approximating the linear system of pseudo steady state by generalized minimal residual algorithm (GMRES). The explicit gas-kinetic scheme has been proved to be an accurate approach for both the steady and unsteady flows, and the implicit gas-kinetic scheme is also be developed to accelerate the convergence of steady state. The dual time-stepping method proposed in our study is of great importance to the computations of unsteady flows. Several numerical cases are performed to evaluate the behavior of dual time stepping strategy of gas-kinetic scheme. The incompressible flow around blunt bodies (stationary circular cylinder and square cylinder) and the transonic buffet on the NACA0012 airfoil are simulated to demonstrate the overall performance of the proposed method which is applicable to the fluid flows from laminar to turbulent and from incompressible to compressible.

Electroweak corrections to top quark pair production in association with a hard photon at hadron colliders

We present the next-to-leading order (NLO) electroweak (EW) corrections to the top quark pair production associated with a hard photon at the current and future hadron colliders. The dependence of the leading order (LO) and NLO EW corrected cross sections on the photon transverse momentum cut are investigated. We also provide the LO and NLO EW corrected distributions of the transverse momentum of final top quark and photon and the invariant mass of top quark pair and top-antitop-photon system. The results show that the NLO EW corrections are significant in high energy regions due to the EW Sudakov effect.

Topological mosaic in Moiré superlattices of van der Waals heterobilayers

Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures formed by 2D atomic crystals provide a powerful approach towards designer condensed matter systems. Incommensurate heterobilayers with small twisting and/or lattice mismatch lead to the interesting concept of Moiré superlattice, where the atomic registry is locally indistinguishable from commensurate bilayers but has local-to-local variation over long range. Here we show that such Moiré superlattice can lead to periodic modulation of local topological order in vdW heterobilayers formed by two massive Dirac materials. By tuning the vdW heterojunction from normal to the inverted type-II regime via an interlayer bias, the commensurate heterobilayer can become a topological insulator (TI), depending on the interlayer hybridization controlled by the atomic registry between the vdW layers. This results in mosaic pattern of TI regions and normal insulator (NI) regions in Moiré superlattices, where topologically protected helical modes exist at the TI/NI phase boundaries. By using symmetry based k.p and tight-binding models, we predict that this topological phenomenon can be present in inverted transition metal dichalcogenides heterobilayers. Our work points to a new means of realizing programmable and electrically switchable topological superstructures from 2D arrays of TI nano-dots to 1D arrays of TI nano-stripes.

Diffusive Wave in the Low Mach Limit for Compressible Navier-Stokes Equations

The low Mach limit for 1D non-isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes flow, whose density and temperature have different asymptotic states at infinity, is rigorously justified. The problems are considered on both well-prepared and ill-prepared data. For the well-prepared data, the solutions of compressible Navier-Stokes equations are shown to converge to a nonlinear diffusion wave solution globally in time as Mach number goes to zero when the difference between the states at $\pm\infty$ is suitably small. In particular, the velocity of diffusion wave is only driven by the variation of temperature. It is further shown that the solution of compressible Navier-Stokes system also has the same property when Mach number is small, which has never been observed before. The convergence rates on both Mach number and time are also obtained for the well-prepared data. For the ill-prepared data, the limit relies on the uniform estimates including weighted time derivatives and an extended convergence lemma. And the difference between the states at $\pm\infty$ can be arbitrary large in this case.

Monitoring Mechanical Motion of Carbon Nanotube based Nanomotor by Optical Absorption Spectrum

The optical absorption spectrums of nanomotors made from double-wall carbon nanotubes have been calculated with the time-dependent density functional based tight binding method. When the outer short tube of the nanomotor moves along or rotates around the inner long tube, the peaks in the spectrum will gradually evolve and may shift periodically, the amplitude of which can be as large as hundreds of meV. We show that the features and behaviors of the optical absorption spectrum could be used to monitor the mechanical motions of the double-wall carbon nanotube based nanomotor.

Probabilistic Process Algebra to Unifying Quantum and Classical Computing in Closed Systems

We have unified quantum and classical computing in open quantum systems called qACP which is a quantum generalization of process algebra ACP. But, an axiomatization for quantum and classical processes with an assumption of closed quantum systems is still missing. For closed quantum systems, unitary operator, quantum measurement and quantum entanglement are three basic components for quantum computing. This leads to probability unavoidable. Along the solution of qACP to unify quantum and classical computing in open quantum systems, we unify quantum and classical computing with an assumption of closed systems under the framework of ACP-like probabilistic process algebra. This unification make it can be used widely in verification for quantum and classical computing mixed systems, such as most quantum communication protocols.

Nonminimal De Rham-Hodge Operators and Non-commutative Residue

In this paper, we get a Kastler-Kalau-Walze type theorem associated to nonminimal de Rham-Hodge operators on compact manifolds with boundary. We give two kinds of operator-theoretic explanations of the gravitational action in the case of four dimensional compact manifolds with flat boundary.

The noncommutative family Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem

In this paper, we define the eta cochain form and prove its regularity when the kernel of a family of Dirac operators is a vector bundle. We decompose the eta form as a pairing of the eta cochain form with the Chern character of an idempotent matrix and we also decompose the Chern character of the index bundle for a fibration with boundary as a pairing of the family Chern-Connes character for a manifold with boundary with the Chern character of an idempotent matrix. We define the family $b$-Chern-Connes character and then we prove that it is entire and give its variation formula. By this variation formula, we prove another noncommutative family Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem. Thus, we extend the results of Gezler and Wu to the family case.

Reply to Comment on "Tip induced unconventional superconductivity on Weyl semimetal TaAs"

Recently, we presented a paper about the tip-induced superconducting phase on TaAs single crystal (arXiv:1607.00513). A conductance plateau with double conductance peaks at finite bias, sharp double dips and a zero bias conductance peak were observed in the point contact spectra (PCS). These three features in one PCS suggest the possibility of p-wave like superconductivity and Majorana zero modes in the surface. Soon after our paper posted on arXiv, Gayen el al. (arXiv:1607.01405) questioned the underlying mechanism of our observations based on their experimental measurements in conventional superconductors(Pb and Nb) and conclusively indicated that the superconductivity observed in our TaAs crystal is conventional. We disagree with their quick conclusion without any specific study on the TaAs materials. We will explain in the following that for the clean (Z=0) point contact (PC) in ballistic limit, the superconducting transition feature in temperature dependence of PC resistance is expected. And the critical current effect claimed by Gayen el al. cannot explain the observed PCS in our paper.

Global Existence for the Ellipsoidal BGK Model with Initial Large Oscillations

The ellipsoidal BGK model was introduced in \cite{Ho} to fit the correct Prandtl number in the Navier-Stokes approximation of the classical BGK model. In the paper we establish the global existence of mild solutions to the Cauchy problem on the model for a class of initial data allowed to have large oscillations. The proof is motivated by a recent study of the same topic on the Boltzmann equation in \cite{DHWY}.

Tip induced unconventional superconductivity on Weyl semimetal TaAs

Weyl fermion is a massless Dirac fermion with definite chirality, which has been long pursued since 1929. Though it has not been observed as a fundamental particle in nature, Weyl fermion can be realized as low-energy excitation around Weyl point in Weyl semimetal, which possesses Weyl fermion cones in the bulk and nontrivial Fermi arc states on the surface. As a firstly discovered Weyl semimetal, TaAs crystal possesses 12 pairs of Weyl points in the momentum space, which are topologically protected against small perturbations. Here, we report for the first time the tip induced superconductivity on TaAs crystal by point contact spectroscopy. A conductance plateau and sharp double dips are observed in the point contact spectra, indicating p-wave like unconventional superconductivity. Furthermore, the zero bias conductance peak in low temperature regime is detected, suggesting potentially the existence of Majorana zero modes. The experimentally observed tunneling spectra can be interpreted with a novel mirror-symmetry protected topological superconductor induced in TaAs, which can exhibit zero bias and double finite bias peaks, and double conductance dips in the measurements. Our work can open a broad avenue in search for new topological superconducting phases from topological Weyl materials and trigger intensive investigations for pursuing Majorana fermions.

Weakly True Concurrency and Its Logic

We firstly find the existence of silent event $τ$ in true concurrency (named weakly true concurrency) by defining weakly true concurrent behaviors and weakly true concurrent logics. Based on Paolo Baldan and Silvia Crafa's comprehensive work on (strongly) true concurrency, we find the correspondence between weakly true concurrent equivalences and weakly true concurrent logics.

Superconductivity in topologically nontrivial material Au2Pb

The search for nontrivial superconductivity in novel quantum materials is currently a most attractive topic in condensed matter physics and material science. The experimental studies have progressed quickly over the past couple of years. In this article, we report systematic studies of superconductivity in Au2Pb single crystals. The bulk superconductivity (onset transition temperature, Tconset= 1.3 K) of Au2Pb is characterized by both transport and diamagnetic measurements, where the upper critical field Hc2 shows unusual quasi-linear temperature dependence. The superconducting gap is revealed by point contact measurement with gold tip. However, when using tungsten (W) tip, which is much harder, the superconducting gap probed is largely enhanced as demonstrated by the increases of both Tconset and upper critical field (Hc2). This can be interpreted as a result of increase in density of states under external anisotropic stress imposed by the tip, as revealed by first-principles calculations. Furthermore, novel phase winding of the pseudospin texture along k-space loops around the Fermi energy is uncovered from the calculations, indicating that the observed superconductivity in Au2Pb may have nontrivial topology.

Global well-posedness of the Boltzmann equation with large amplitude initial data

The global well-posedness of the Boltzmann equation with initial data of large amplitude has remained a long-standing open problem. In this paper, by developing a new $L^\infty_xL^1_{v}\cap L^\infty_{x,v}$ approach, we prove the global existence and uniqueness of mild solutions to the Boltzmann equation in the whole space or torus for a class of initial data with bounded velocity-weighted $L^\infty$ norm under some smallness condition on $L^1_xL^\infty_v$ norm as well as defect mass, energy and entropy so that the initial data allow large amplitude oscillations. Both the hard and soft potentials with angular cut-off are considered, and the large time behavior of solutions in $L^\infty_{x,v}$ norm with explicit rates of convergence is also studied.

Internal Model Based Active Disturbance Rejection Control

The basic active disturbance rejection control (BADRC) algorithm with only one order higher extended state observer (ESO) proves to be robust to both internal and external disturbances. An advantage of BADRC is that in many applications it can achieve high disturbance attenuation level without requiring a detailed model of the plant or disturbance. However, this can be regarded as a disadvantage when the disturbance characteristic is known since the BADRC algorithm cannot exploit such information. This paper proposes an internal model based ADRC (IADRC) method, which can take advantage of knowing disturbance characteristic to achieve perfect estimation of the disturbance under some mild assumptions. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated by comprehensive simulations and comparisons with the BADRC algorithm.

Macroscopic regularity for the Boltzmann equation

The regularity of solutions to the Boltzmann equation is a fundamental problem in the kinetic theory. In this paper, the case with angular cut-off is investigated. It is shown that the macroscopic parts of solutions to the Boltzmann equation, i.e. the density, momentum and total energy are continuous functions of $(x,t)$ in the region $\mathbb{R}^3\times(0,+\infty)$. More precisely, these macroscopic quantities immediately become continuous in any positive time even though they are initially discontinuous and the discontinuities of solutions propagate only in the microscopic level. It should be noted that such kind of phenomenon can not happen for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in which the initial discontinuities of the density never vanish in any finite time, see \cite{Hoff}. This hints that the Boltzmann equation has better regularity effect in the macroscopic level than compressible Navier-Stokes equations.

An equivariant Kastler-Kalau-Walze type theorem

In this paper, we prove an equivariant Kastler-Kalau-Walze type theorem for spin manifolds without boundary. For $6$ dimensional spin manifolds with boundary, we also give an equivariant Kastler-Kalau-Walze type theorem. Then we generalize this theorem to the general $n$ dimensional manifold. An equivariant Kastler-Kalau-Walze type theorem with torsion is also proved.

The Chiral Anomaly and Ultrahigh Mobility in Crystalline HfTe5

HfTe5 is predicted to be a promising platform for studying topological phases. Here through an electrical transport study, we present the first observation of chiral anomaly and ultrahigh mobility in HfTe5 crystals. Negative magneto-resistivity in HfTe5 is observed when the external magnetic and electrical fields are parallel (B//E) and quickly disappears once B deviates from the direction of E. Quantitative fitting further confirms the chiral anomaly as the underlying physics. Moreover, by analyzing the conductivity tensors of longitudinal and Hall traces, ultrahigh mobility and ultralow carrier density are revealed in HfTe5, which paves the way for potential electronic applications.
