Exact Average Consensus under Noisy Communication Links: A Decentralized Gradient Perspective

We study the distributed average consensus problem under persistent link-level disturbances modeled as a martingale difference sequence with uniformly bounded conditional second moments. Under such disturbances, the standard stochastic-approximation-based linear iteration with diminishing stepsizes drives the network to consensus on an unbiased random variable with non-vanishing variance instead of the exact initial average. To understand and resolve this limitation, we develop an anchoring-based mechanism derived from a decentralized gradient descent formulation and study the effect of incorporating a decaying anchoring term that continuously pulls each agent state toward its initial value. This perspective provides an intuitive interpretation of how state anchoring counteracts disturbance accumulation. Under standard summability conditions, we prove that the resulting algorithm achieves exact average consensus almost surely. Furthermore, this decentralized gradient perspective offers a unifying framework for several related methods and an interpretable design principle for exact average consensus under persistent disturbances.

TCMaster: Confidence-Aware Querying and Workload-Guided Physical Design for Multi-Source Traditional Chinese Medicine Knowledge Graphs

Multi-source knowledge graphs (KGs) need query mechanisms that expose reliability and exploit domain structure. This paper presents TCMaster, a property-graph query substrate for confidence-aware traversal and workload-guided physical design over Traditional Chinese Medicine KGs. TCMaster integrates pharmacopoeias, prescriptions, molecular databases, and LLM-extracted micro-semantics into a KG with approximately 221K entities and 723K base edges. It annotates edges with provenance-level confidence, rewrites Cypher queries with confidence predicates, ranks multi-hop paths under PRODUCT, MIN, or weighted-average policies, and uses ontology skew through direction selection, herb-attribute bitmaps, and materialized shortcut edges. On Neo4j, direction selection improves attribute lookup by a factor of 1.47, shortcuts accelerate high-fanout target counting by a factor of 4.42, confidence filtering removes 39.3 percent of low-quality heterogeneous paths, and KG retrieval improves TCMbench QA accuracy by 20.0 percentage points.

LingLan: An Advancing Traditional Chinese Medicine Diagnosis LLM with Multimodal Data

Though artificial intelligence (AI) increasingly transforms modern medicine, its integration into Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been relatively slow, primarily due to TCM's reliance on holistic, subjective diagnostic methods---namely Inspection, Auscultation and Olfaction, Inquiry, and Palpation(I-AOI-P)---which are difficult to align with quantitative, standardized medical systems. In this work, we introduce a Unification Framework for Multimodal Data (UFMD), which automatically processes tongue and pulse images into structured, clinically standard descriptions, integrating multi-source diagnostic information into a unified digital record of I-AOI-P process. Building on this structured data, we create LingLan-14B, a TCM-specific large language model fine-tuned via supervised learning to emulate the diagnostic logic and workflow of I-AOI-P process. Experimental results show that our method significantly enhances diagnostic accuracy, achieving a relative improvement of 103.5% over the baseline (62.72% vs. 30.82%) and reaching an F1-score of up to 82%.

Syndrome, Synergy, and Safety: Structured Reasoning and Knowledge-Driven Alignment for TCM Prescription Generation

Applying large language models to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) prescription generation reveals three clinically critical gaps: models produce end-to-end mappings without auditable reasoning following the li-fa-fang-yao paradigm (SR Gap), treat each encounter in isolation without follow-up adjustment via sui zheng jia jian (LA Gap), and fail to enforce absolute contraindication rules such as Shi Ba Fan (SC Gap). We propose a progressive four-stage framework (SFT $\to$ PG-CoT $\to$ Dynamic $\to$ K-RL) that addresses each gap: PG-CoT constrains CoT distillation under the li-fa-fang-yao paradigm to produce auditable diagnostic chains, Dynamic SFT models patient trajectories with explicit transition reasoning, and K-RL encodes deterministic pharmacological rules as rule-based DPO preference signals. Across 12 fine-tuned models and 6 zero-shot baselines, our framework substantially improves prescription quality over zero-shot baselines---with a 7B model (Mistral-7B) surpassing zero-shot GPT-5 on all three TCM evaluation metrics.

SPHQuant: Efficient extreme low bit weight quantization for Vision-Language Models

Recent foundation models are moving toward native multimodal Vision-Language Models (VLMs), making VLMs a central form of next-generation foundation models. However, their large language backbones make edge deployment difficult due to high memory footprint and memory-bound autoregressive decoding. Weight-only post-training quantization is a practical solution, but pushing VLMs to extreme low bit-widths remains challenging: existing rotation-free methods suffer from outliers at 2-3 bits, while rotation-based methods improve accuracy at the cost of additional runtime overhead. We propose SPHQuant, a rotation-free spherical weight-only quantization framework for VLMs. Instead of quantizing weights directly in Cartesian coordinates, SPHQuant decomposes each 8D weight vector into coordinate signs, radius, and a positive unit direction. This representation isolates outlier magnitude into the radius while keeping directions bounded and statistically regular. Based on this insight, SPHQuant allocates extra precision to the radius to mitigate accuracy degradation induced by outliers. It further uses a compact positive-direction codebook and fine-tunes codebook entries through angular parameterization to preserve the unit-sphere constraint. We also design a hardware-friendly GEMV kernel that keeps the direction codebook small enough for shared-memory lookup and packs radial bits efficiently. Experiments show that SPHQuant matches the performance of state-of-the-art extreme low-bit quantization methods while improving decode throughput over QTIP by 30.3% on RTX A6000. Code will be released in https://github.com/Pushazf/SPHQuant.

TrialAtlas: Multi-Agent Research Organization for Clinical Trial Design and Optimization

Nearly 90% of drugs entering clinical development ultimately fail, despite billions of dollars in investment. Pharmaceutical companies therefore rely on clinical development planning (CDP) and probability of technical and regulatory success assessment to anticipate development risks, yet these decisions remain labor-intensive and subjective, requiring experts across clinical science, statistics, regulatory affairs, and competitive intelligence to jointly acquire, synthesize, and reason over heterogeneous evidence. Here, we introduce TrialAtlas, a memory-augmented multi-agent research organization for CDP that mirrors this collaborative process by coordinating specialized agents for literature synthesis, competitive trial intelligence, regulatory precedent analysis, and integrated reasoning over trial design and development risk. TrialAtlas further learns from historical clinical trials and regulatory outcomes, including prior New Drug Applications (NDAs), to ground its decisions in accumulated development experience. To evaluate these capabilities in an authentic regulatory setting, we introduce TrialAtlasBench, constructed from 291 FDA Complete Response Letters and spanning three practical tasks: detecting trial design deficiencies, recommending actionable design improvements, and predicting technical and regulatory success. TrialAtlas achieves an F1 score of 50.0% for deficiency detection, outperforming the strongest baseline by 6.1 points, and reaches 85.3% balanced accuracy and 84.7% F1 for prediction of technical and regulatory success, improving over the best baselines by 6.7 points in balanced accuracy and 12.0 points in Cohen's kappa. In expert evaluation, 86.4% of TrialAtlas-generated concerns were judged valid, compared with 83.1% for OpenAI DeepResearch and 59.3% for Gemini DeepResearch.

BC-IHV: Conditioning the Color Space for Stable Rectified-Flow Low-Light Enhancement

Low-light image enhancement (LLIE) must correct ambiguous exposure without overwriting structure already supported by the input. Generative transport can model exposure ambiguity; however, its flexibility may also alter observable geometry and chromatic content. Moreover, fixed invertible color coordinates are usually treated only as representations, although their inverse mappings reshape the RGB-domain gradients received by the enhancement network. To address these issues, we propose Structure-Anchored Rectified Flow (SA-RF), which maintains correspondence through separate chromaticity/intensity stems, a scale-matched condition pyramid, and HybridAda. HybridAda assigns location-specific retrieval to spatial cross-attention and global exposure modulation to pooled AdaLN. We further introduce BC-IHV, a learnable Box--Cox polar color space whose analytically invertible intensity mapping controls the inverse-gradient dynamic range through a single exponent. This allows the representation to balance dark-range expansion and gradient conditioning instead of adopting a fixed linear or logarithmic law. Experiments on three LOL benchmarks, blind image-quality evaluation, and cross-dataset tests demonstrate consistent reconstruction and perceptual advantages over the sota. Controlled studies further support the effectiveness of both the proposed framework and color representation.

PCA-guided Activation Scaling for Monotonic Bidirectional Control over LLM Sycophancy

Large language models (LLMs) exhibit sycophancy, a tendency to agree with user beliefs regardless of factual accuracy. This can reinforce misconceptions, but eliminating it entirely risks over-correction against valid opinions. Effective control must therefore both reduce and increase sycophancy with predictable and gradual effect. Yet, existing methods fail to ensure a bidirectional and monotonic relationship between steering strength and behavioral outcome across models and datasets. We introduce PCA-guided Activation Scaling (PAS), an activation steering framework that decomposes residual stream activations into a PCA-identified sycophancy-honesty subspace and an orthogonal residual, then applies distinct scaling exponents to achieve monotonic, bidirectional control. Across three LLMs and three datasets, PAS achieves strong monotonicity (Spearman $ρ$ = +0.92) and an average shift of 15.4% per direction, compared with 8.7% for the baselines. Ablation studies confirm that the decomposition, asymmetric exponents, and layer selection are each essential for maintaining monotonic control. HonestFace: Towards Honest Face Restoration with One-Step Diffusion Model

Face restoration has achieved significant advancements through the years of development. However, maintaining high fidelity and authenticity while avoiding artifacts remains challenging, especially in extreme degradation scenarios. This highlights the need for models that are more ``honest'' in their reconstruction from low-quality inputs, accurately reflecting original characteristics. In this work, we propose HonestFace, a novel approach for honest face restoration with identity consistency and realistic textures. To achieve this, HonestFace incorporates several key components. First, we propose an identity embedder to effectively capture and preserve crucial identity features from both the low-quality input and multiple reference faces. Second, a masked face alignment method is presented to enhance fine-grained details and textural authenticity. Furthermore, we present a new real-world reference-based face restoration dataset, \textbf{MultiRefCeleb-Test}, with multiple high-quality references and low-quality inputs. Leveraging these contributions within a one-step diffusion model framework, HonestFace delivers excellent restoration results in terms of facial fidelity and realism. Experiments demonstrate that our approach surpasses state-of-the-art methods, achieving superior performance in both visual quality and quantitative assessments. The code and pre-trained models are available at https://github.com/jkwang28/HonestFace .

ZIPBrain: Can EEG Foundation Models Be Faster, Locally Deployable, but Accurate?

This work investigates whether Electroencephalograph (EEG) foundation models (EFMs) can be made faster and locally deployable without sacrificing accuracy. EEG foundation models are a major trend, offering strong general-purpose representations. However, their computational burden grows quadratically with input length, hindering deployment on resource-constrained scenario, particularly for real-time clinical monitoring. EEG's low SNR further suggests many of these tokens are redundant and compressible with little accuracy cost. We propose ZIPBrain, a novel redundancy-aware EEG token pooling module that leverages this low-SNR characteristic to reduce token count. Given a token sequence, ZIPBrain partitions tokens into redundant and unique groups, then merges each redundant token with its most similar counterpart in the unique group. Furthermore, ZIPBrain serves as a training-free, plug-and-play module that seamlessly integrates into standard Transformer encoders with negligible computational overhead. Extensive experiments across multiple EEG foundation models show ZIPBrain's strong versatility, achieving 1.3%-10.5% average improvement over baselines, while reducing wall-clock inference time by 32.7% (up to 41.8% with CUDA Graph) compared to the original EEG foundation models.

Symmetric Behavior Regularized Policy Optimization

Behavior Regularized Policy Optimization (BRPO) leverages asymmetric divergence regularization to mitigate distribution shift in offline reinforcement learning. This paper is the first to study the open question of symmetric BRPO. Using didactic examples, we show that symmetric regularization can outperform asymmetric regularization in addressing one-sided bias, near-boundary policy updates, and projection geometry consistency. However, symmetric divergences do not fit BRPO naturally: they do not permit a closed-form solution when used as regularizers, and can lead to numerical instability when used as optimization objectives. We first introduce a universal BRPO framework using an infinite series of Pearson-Vajda divergences to represent any $f$-divergence, which includes both symmetric and asymmetric divergences. We use a finite-series approximation to obtain the following results for symmetric BRPO: (1) a closed-form optimal policy expression; (2) a numerically stable optimization surrogate; and (3) a tight upper bound on the approximation quality. On the D4RL benchmark and in didactic examples, we show that the proposed method achieves consistently strong results and is robust to the number of terms in the approximation.

Mixed-Timescale Differential Coding for Downlink Model Broadcast in Wireless Federated Learning

In standard federated learning systems, the parameter server broadcasts the global model to the participating devices in every iteration. Motivated by the temporal correlation between consecutive global models, differential coding can be applied to global model dissemination to reduce the information magnitude, thereby enabling communication with fewer quantization bits. However, due to wireless link failures, devices may occasionally miss differential updates and consequently fail to reconstruct the global model. As a result, they either continue local training based on an outdated model or remain idle until the next full-model broadcast becomes available. To address this challenge, we propose a mixed-timescale differential coding (MTDC) scheme that performs differential coding at two different levels by adjusting the reference model. With MTDC, a device can reconstruct the latest global model between two full-model broadcasts even if it misses a differential update. We provide a convergence analysis that motivates the design of an age-aware variant of MTDC, along with a device scheduling policy to further improve communication efficiency. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed MTDC schemes achieve superior learning performance compared to baseline methods under similar communication resource budgets in the presence of downlink transmission failures.

NeuroGRIP: Retrieval-Augmented Graph Refinement for Knowledge-Grounded EEG Seizure Diagnosis

Seizure diagnosis from EEG signals is a critical yet persistently challenging task, due to the complicated neural dynamics and the spurious connections in inter-channel modeling. While spatial-temporal graph neural networks (STGNNs) have advanced EEG brain network representation learning, the resulting graph structures suffer from low clinical plausibility and limited interpretability due to their purely data-driven nature. To this end, we introduce NeuroGRIP, a retrieval-augmented graph refinement framework that incorporates external medical knowledge to calibrate noisy EEG graphs. We first construct a large-scale, domain-specific knowledge base derived from authoritative clinical guidelines. Leveraging large language models, we extract structured biomedical entities and relations to form a textual knowledge graph (KG), which serves as external knowledge source of clinical priors. Our framework performs alignment-aware query construction by projecting STGNN-generated EEG node embeddings into the semantic space of KG. Semantic queries are then executed via FAISS-based similarity search over knowledge triplets to retrieve relation evidence. Each predicted edge is assigned a confidence score based on retrieved similarity, relation type, and source reliability, enabling us to prune medically implausible edges from the originally predicted graph. Extensive experiments on TUSZ and CHB-MIT demonstrate that NeuroGRIP not only improves seizure detection accuracy but also enhances interpretability by grounding each prediction in clinically validated knowledge. This work provides the first unified framework that tightly couples brain dynamics with external medical expertise via retrieval-augmented reasoning, paving the way for knowledge-enhanced, explainable clinical diagnosis. Freqformer: Image-Demoiréing Transformer via Effective Frequency Decomposition

Image demoiréing remains a challenging task due to the complex interplay between texture corruption and color distortions caused by moiré patterns. Existing methods, especially those relying on direct image-to-image restoration, often fail to disentangle these intertwined artifacts effectively. While frequency-aware approaches offer a promising direction, their potential is hindered by the discrete transform (e.g., Haar wavelet or block-based DCT), which may suffer from spatial discontinuity, channel redundancy, and further cause error accumulation during their fixed inverse processes. In this paper, we present Freqformer, a Transformer-based framework specifically designed for image demoiréing through targeted frequency separation. Our method performs an effective frequency decomposition that splits moiré patterns into high-frequency spatially-localized textures and low-frequency scale-robust color distortions, which are then handled by a dual-branch architecture and an asymmetric training scheme tailored to their distinct characteristics. We further propose a learnable Frequency Composition Transform (FCT) module to adaptively fuse the frequency-specific outputs, enabling consistent and high-fidelity reconstruction. To better aggregate the spatial dependencies and the inter-channel complementary information, we introduce a Spatial-Aware Channel Attention (SA-CA) module that refines moiré-sensitive regions without incurring high computational cost. Extensive experiments on various demoiréing benchmarks demonstrate that Freqformer achieves state-of-the-art performance with a compact model size. The code will be made publicly available at https://github.com/xyLiu339/Freqformer.

Effects of Soret diffusion on the intrinsic instability of premixed hydrogen/air flames

Hydrogen flames exhibit multiple intrinsic instabilities. The low molar masses of H and H2 lead to significant Soret diffusion near the flame front; however, its influence on hydrogen flame instabilities remains to be quantified. This study investigates the effect of Soret diffusion on instability evolution dynamics via one-dimensional counterflow analysis and two-dimensional, high-fidelity direct numerical simulations covering both the linear growth regime and the fully developed nonlinear regime over a wide range of equivalence ratios (phi). In the linear regime, Soret diffusion increases the perturbation growth rate at phi < 1.7, especially under lean conditions, but reduces the growth rate at phi > 1.7. A similar sensitivity reversal is observed in the Markstein length near the peak equivalence ratio of unstretched laminar flame speed. In the nonlinear regime, Soret diffusion accelerates the formation of small-scale wrinkles in lean hydrogen flames and reduces the characteristic size of large-scale finger structure by one-third. An interesting observation is that, although Soret diffusion promotes preferential diffusion and increases the local flame displacement speed, the global fuel consumption rate decreases due to a reduction in the overall flame surface area. In addition, curvature-based flame segment analysis reveals a synergistic effect between Soret diffusion and Fickian diffusion that enhances/reduces the local equivalence ratio in positively/negatively curved regions of the flame front. The probability distributions of the Karlovitz number and the density-weighted displacement speed are also analyzed; results suggest that, for lean hydrogen flames, Soret diffusion broadens the distributions for both parameters, particularly on the positive side. These findings promise to advance the fundamental understanding of hydrogen flame dynamics under complex differential transport.

Degrees of freedom of a quadratic scalar-nonmetricity theory

We study the number of degrees of freedom (DOFs) in quadratic scalar-nonmetricity (QSN) theory, whose Lagrangian is the linear combination of five quadratic nonmetricity invariants with coefficients depending on a dynamical scalar field. Working in the coincident gauge, we perform the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner decomposition and classify QSN models into 13 cases according to the numbers of their primary constraints. For cases that are physically viable in the sense that both a consistent cosmological background and tensor gravitational waves exist, we count the number of DOFs based on two approaches. First, we investigate the linear cosmological perturbations around a Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker background. Then we perform a Dirac-Bergmann Hamiltonian constraint analysis to count the number of DOFs at the nonperturbative level. We focus on three representative cases. In case II, both the perturbative and nonperturbative approaches yield the same result, which indicates that the theory propagates 10 degrees of freedom. In contrast, in cases V and VI, the Hamiltonian analysis yields 8 degrees of freedom, while only 6 and 5 modes are visible at linear order in perturbations, respectively. This indicates that additional modes are strongly coupled on cosmological backgrounds.

Cordon: Semantic Transactions for Tool-Using LLM Agents

Tool-using LLM agents are shifting the unit of computation from explicit human-issued commands to model-driven tasks with stateful consequences. Yet today's agent runtimes still expose tools as isolated RPCs. This interface gives runtimes a convenient integration point, but it lacks a task-scoped execution boundary for commit, rollback, recovery, and audit across multi-step agent workflows. We argue that this mismatch calls for a runtime containment boundary rather than another per-call guardrail. This paper introduces Cordon, a transactional runtime system for staging and validating irreversible agent effects before commit. A semantic transaction is a task-level execution boundary that binds tool intents and runtime-tracked result lineage to reversible local state, staged external effects, delegated authority, and audit metadata. Cordon implements this abstraction with a transaction manager that tracks derived result objects, executes reversible mutations in shadow state, stages outward-facing actions in an effect outbox, and records recovery metadata. The runtime then validates the composed execution flow before it commits state or releases external effects. Our evaluation across adversarial and benign workflows shows that Cordon exposes cross-step violations missed by existing defenses. It also reduces irreversible-effect failures while preserving benign task completion with modest approval and latency overhead.

NTIRE 2024 Challenge on Image Super-Resolution (x4): Methods and Results

This paper reviews the NTIRE 2024 challenge on image super-resolution ($\times$4), highlighting the solutions proposed and the outcomes obtained. The challenge involves generating corresponding high-resolution (HR) images, magnified by a factor of four, from low-resolution (LR) inputs using prior information. The LR images originate from bicubic downsampling degradation. The aim of the challenge is to obtain designs/solutions with the most advanced SR performance, with no constraints on computational resources (e.g., model size and FLOPs) or training data. The track of this challenge assesses performance with the PSNR metric on the DIV2K testing dataset. The competition attracted 199 registrants, with 20 teams submitting valid entries. This collective endeavour not only pushes the boundaries of performance in single-image SR but also offers a comprehensive overview of current trends in this field.
