A modified Michelson interferometer type Raman laser system for atom interferometers

We have developed a modified Michelson interferometer type Raman laser system to manipulate cold 87 Rb atoms to interfere. A frequency modulated continuous wave technique was introduced to determine the optical path difference, thus compensating it to zero to minimize the effects of common mode noise. The linewidth (full width at half maximum) of the beat signal at 6.834 GHz was measured to 1Hz limited by the resolution bandwidth of the spectral analyzer. The measured rms phase variance of the phase noise at 166 MHz was 0.015 rad2, mainly restricted by our poor performance radio frequency microwave source. With modest improvements, we plan to apply this laser system to form an atom interferometer for acceleration and rotation measurements.

Quantum Decoherence with Holography

Quantum decoherence is the loss of a system's purity due to its interaction with the surrounding environment. Via the AdS/CFT correspondence, we study how a system decoheres when its environment is a strongly-coupled theory. In the Feynman-Vernon formalism, we compute the influence functional holographically by relating it to the generating function of Schwinger-Keldysh propagators and thereby obtain the dynamics of the system's density matrix. We present two exactly solvable examples: (1) a straight string in a BTZ black hole and (2) a scalar probe in AdS$_5$. We prepare an initial state that mimics Schrödinger's cat and identify different stages of its decoherence process using the time-scaling behaviors of Rényi entropy. We also relate decoherence to local quantum quenches, and by comparing the time evolution behaviors of the Wigner function and Rényi entropy we demonstrate that the relaxation of local quantum excitations leads to the collapse of its wave-function.

A digital CDS technique and the performance testing

Readout noise is a critical parameter for characterizing the performance of charge-coupled devices (CCDs), which can be greatly reduced by the correlated double sampling (CDS) circuit. However, conventional CDS circuit inevitably introduces new noises since it consists of several active analog components such as operational amplifiers. This paper proposes a digital CDS circuit technique, which transforms the pre-amplified CCD signal into a train of digital presentations by a high-speed data acquisition card directly without the noisy CDS circuit first, then implement the digital CDS algorithm through numerical method. The readout noise of 3.3 e$^{-}$ and the energy resolution of 121 eV@5.9keV can be achieved via the digital CDS technique.

Electron and Hole Photoemission Detection for Band Offset Determination of Tunnel Field-Effect Transistor Heterojunctions

The electrical performance of a tunnel field-effect transistor depends critically on the band offset at their semiconductor heterojunction interface. Historically, it has been difficult to experimentally determine how the electronic bands align at the heterojunction interface. We report here on experimental methods to ascertain a complete energy band alignment of a broken-gap tunnel field-effect transistor based on an InAs/GaSb hetero-junction. By using graphene as an optically transparent electrode in a traditional internal photoemission measurement, both the electron and hole barrier heights at the InAs/GaSb interface can be quantified. For a Al2O3/InAs/GaSb layer structure, the barrier height from the top of InAs and GaSb valence band to the bottom of Al2O3 conduction band is inferred from electron emission whereas hole emissions reveal the barrier height from the top of Al2O3 valence band to the bottom of InAs and GaSb conduction band. Subsequently, the offset parameter at the broken gap InAs/GaSb interface is extracted and thus can be used to facilitate the development of predicted model of electron quantum tunneling efficiency and transistor performance.

Phase Diagram and Weak-link Behavior in Nd-doped CaFe_2As_2

The transport properties, phase diagram, and dopant distribution are investigated in systematically Nd doped CaFe_2As_2 single crystals. Coexistence of two superconducting (SC) phases with different critical transition temperature (T_c) is observed. The low-T_c phase emerges as x >= 0.031, and the T_c value increases to its maximum value of about 20 K at x = 0.083, the maximum doping level in our study. As x >= 0.060, the high-T_c phase with a T_c value of about 40 K is observed. The structure transition (STr) from tetragonal to orthorhombic phase vanishes suddenly around x = 0.060, where a new STr from tetragonal to collapsed tetragonal phase begins to turn up. Compared to the low-T_c phase, the end point of SC transition of the high-T_c phase is more sensitive to the magnetic field, showing a characteristic of Josephson weak-link behavior. Possible scenarios about this system are discussed based on our observations. We also find that the non-uniform SC properties cannot be attributed to the heterogeneous Nd distribution on the micro scale, as revealed by the detailed energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) measurements.

Interaction driven quantum phase transition in fractional quantum spin Hall effects

By means of finite size exact diagonalization we theoretically study the electronic many-body effects on the nearly flat-band structure with time-reversal symmetry in a checkerboard lattice model and identify the topological nature of two quantum phases, with ninefold and threefold degeneracy, that appear, respectively, at small and large values $λ$ of a nearest neighbor spin dependent interaction. Numerical evidences from the evolution of low-lying energy spectra and Berry phases with both spin-independent and spin-dependent twisted boundary conditions reveal that these two different ground states share the same topological spin Chern number. Quantum phase transition between these two states by tuning $λ$ is confirmed by evaluating the energy spectra and quasispin excitation spectra closing. At last, the counting rules of spin excitation spectra are demonstrated as the fingerprints of the fractionalized quantum spin Hall states.

Ranking the Economic Importance of Countries and Industries

In the current era of worldwide stock market interdependencies, the global financial village has become increasingly vulnerable to systemic collapse. The recent global financial crisis has highlighted the necessity of understanding and quantifying interdependencies among the world's economies, developing new effective approaches to risk evaluation, and providing mitigating solutions. We present a methodological framework for quantifying interdependencies in the global market and for evaluating risk levels in the world-wide financial network. The resulting information will enable policy and decision makers to better measure, understand, and maintain financial stability. We use the methodology to rank the economic importance of each industry and country according to the global damage that would result from their failure. Our quantitative results shed new light on China's increasing economic dominance over other economies, including that of the USA, to the global economy.

Charge-Stripe Order in a Parent Compound of Iron-based Superconductors

Charge ordering is one of the most intriguing and extensively studied phenomena in correlated electronic materials because of its strong impact on electron transport properties including superconductivity. Despite its ubiquitousness in correlated systems, the occurrence of charge ordering in iron-based superconductors is still unresolved. Here we use scanning tunneling microscopy to reveal a long-range charge-stripe order and a highly anisotropic dispersion of electronic states in the ground state of stoichiometric FeTe, the parent compound of the Fe(Te, Se, S) superconductor family. The formation of charge order in a strongly correlated electron system with integer nominal valence (here Fe$^{2+}$) is unexpected and suggests that the iron-based superconductors may exhibit more complex charge dynamics than originally expected. We show that the present observations can be attributed to the surpassing of the role of local Coulomb interaction by the poorly screened longer-range Coulomb interactions, facilitated by large Hund's rule coupling.

Broad Band Optical Properties of Large Area Monolayer CVD Molybdenum Disulfide

Recently emerging large-area single-layer MoS2 grown by chemical vapor deposition has triggered great interest due to its exciting potential for applications in advanced electronic and optoelectronic devices. Unlike gapless graphene, MoS2 has an intrinsic band gap in the visible which crosses over from an indirect to a direct gap when reduced to a single atomic layer. In this article, we report a comprehensive study of fundamental optical properties of MoS2 revealed by optical spectroscopy of Raman, photoluminescence, and vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopic ellipsometry. A band gap of 1.42 eV is determined by the absorption threshold of bulk MoS2 that shifts to 1.83 eV in monolayer MoS2. We extracted the high precision dielectric function up to 9.0 eV which leads to the identification of many unique interband transitions at high symmetry points in the MoS2 momentum space. The positions of the A and B excitons in single layers are found to shift upwards in energy compared with those of the bulk form and have smaller separation. A very strong optical critical point predicted to correspond to a quasi-particle gap is observed at 2.86 eV, which is attributed to optical transitions along the parallel bands between the M and gama points in the reduced Brillouin zone. The absence of the bulk MoS2 spin-orbit interaction peak at ~ 3.0 eV in monolayer MoS2 is, as predicted, the consequence of the coalescence of nearby excitons. A higher energy optical transition at 3.98 eV, commonly occurred in bulk semiconductors, is associated with a combination of several critical points. These optical transitions herein reported enhance our understanding of monolayer MoS2 as well as of two-dimensional systems in general, and thus provide informative guidelines for MoS2 optical device designs and theoretical considerations.

Spherical Collapse for Viscous Generalized Chaplygin Gas Model

The nonlinear collapse for viscous generalized Chaplygin gas Model (VGCG) was analyzed in the framework of spherical top-hat collapse. As the VGCG and baryons are essential to form the large scale structure, we focused on their nonlinear collapse in this paper. We discussed the influence of model parameters $α$ and $ζ_{0}$ on the spherical collapse by varying their values and compare with $ΛCDM$. The results show that, for the VGCG model, smaller $ζ_{0}$ and larger $α$ make the structure formation earlier and faster, and the collapse curves of VGCG model is almost distinguished with the $ΛCDM$ model when the model parameter $α$ is less than $10^{-2}$.

Ultrafast spectroscopy of quasiparticle dynamics in cuprate superconductors

Ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy is a powerful tool to study the nonequilibrium dynamics in high-Tc cuprate superconductors. The photo-induced quasiparticle (QP) dynamics revealed by pump-probe spectroscopy are sensitive to the near-Fermi level electronic structures. Here we review several selected examples to illustrate the enduring challenges including pairing glue, phase separation, and phase transitions in cuprate superconductors. We also present the data obtained on thin films of YBa2Cu3O7-δ in connection to these issues.

Topology and Criticality in Resonating Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki loop Spin Liquid States

We exploit a natural Projected Entangled-Pair State (PEPS) representation for the resonating Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki loop (RAL) state. By taking advantage of PEPS-based analytical and numerical methods, we characterize the RAL states on various two-dimensional lattices. On square and honeycomb lattices, these states are critical since the dimer-dimer correlations decay as a power law. On kagome lattice, the RAL state has exponentially decaying correlation functions, supporting the scenario of a gapped spin liquid. We provide further evidence that the RAL state on the kagome lattice is a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid, by identifying the four topological sectors and computing the topological entropy. Furthermore, we construct a one-parameter family of PEPS states interpolating between the RAL state and a short-range Resonating Valence Bond state and find a critical point, consistent with the fact that the two states belong to two different phases. We also perform a variational study of the spin-1 kagome Heisenberg model using this one-parameter PEPS.

Spherical top-hat Collapse of a Viscous Unified Dark Fluid

In this paper, we test the spherical collapse of a viscous unified dark fluid (VUDF) which has constant adiabatic sound speed and show the nonlinear collapse for VUDF, baryons, and dark matter which are important to form the large scale structure of our Universe. By varying the values of model parameters $α$ and $ζ_{0}$, we discuss their effects on the nonlinear collapse of the VUDF model, and compare its result to $ΛCDM$ model. The analyzed results show that, within the spherical top-hat collapse framework, larger values of $α$ and smaller values of $ζ_{0}$ make the structure formation earlier and faster, and the other collapse curves are almost distinguished with the curve of $Λ CDM$ model if the bulk viscosity coefficient $ζ_{0}$ is less than $10^{-3}$.

Real-time Decolorization using Dominant Colors

Decolorization is the process to convert a color image or video to its grayscale version, and it has received great attention in recent years. An ideal decolorization algorithm should preserve the original color contrast as much as possible. Meanwhile, it should provide the final decolorized result as fast as possible. However, most of the current methods are suffering from either unsatisfied color information preservation or high computational cost, limiting their application value. In this paper, a simple but effective technique is proposed for real-time decolorization. Based on the typical rgb2gray() color conversion model, which produces a grayscale image by linearly combining R, G, and B channels, we propose a dominant color hypothesis and a corresponding distance measurement metric to evaluate the quality of grayscale conversion. The local optimum scheme provides several "good" candidates in a confidence interval, from which the "best" result can be extracted. Experimental results demonstrate that remarkable simplicity of the proposed method facilitates the process of high resolution images and videos in real-time using a common CPU.

Proton irradiation effect on SCDs

The Low Energy X-ray Telescope is a main payload on the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope satellite. The swept charge device is selected for the Low Energy X-ray Telescope. As swept charge devices are sensitive to proton irradiation, irradiation test was carried out on the HI-13 accelerator at the China Institute of Atomic Energy. The beam energy was measured to be 10 MeV at the SCD. The proton fluence delivered to the SCD was $3\times10^{8}\mathrm{protons}/\mathrm{cm}^{2}$ over two hours. It is concluded that the proton irradiation affects both the dark current and the charge transfer inefficiency of the SCD through comparing the performance both before and after the irradiation. The energy resolution of the proton-irradiated SCD is 212 eV@5.9 keV at $-60\,^{\circ}\mathrm{C}$, while it before irradiated is 134 eV. Moreover, better performance can be reached by lowering the operating temperature of the SCD on orbit.

Optimal Transport in Worldwide Metro Networks

Metro networks serve as good examples of traffic systems for understanding the relations between geometric structures and transport properties. We study and compare 28 world major metro networks in terms of the Wasserstein distance, the key metric for optimal transport, and measures geometry related, e.g. fractal dimension, graph energy and graph spectral distance. The finding of power-law relationships between rescaled graph energy and fractal dimension for both unweighted and weighted metro networks indicates the energy costs per unit area are lower for higher dimensioned metros. In L space, the mean Wasserstein distance between any pair of connected stations is proportional to the fractal dimension, which is in the vicinity of our theoretical calculations treated on special regular tree graphs. This finding reveals the geometry of metro networks and tree graphs are in close proximity to one another. In P space, the mean Wasserstein distance between any pair of stations relates closely to the average number of transfers. By ranking several key quantities transport concerned, we obtain several ranking lists in which New York metro and Berlin metro consistently top the first two spots.

Viscous Generalized Chaplygin Gas as a Unified Dark Fluid: Including Perturbation of Bulk Viscosity

In this paper, we continue our previous work of studying viscous generalized Chaplygin gas (VGCG) as a unified dark fluid but including the bulk viscosity perturbation. By using the currently available cosmic observational data from SNLS3, BAO, HST and recently released Planck, we gain the constraint on bulk viscosity coefficient: $ζ_0=0.0000138_{- 0.0000105- 0.0000138- 0.0000138}^{+ 0.00000614+ 0.0000145+ 0.0000212}$ in $1, 2, 3σ$ regions respectively via Markov Chain Monte Carlo method. The result shows that when considering perturbation of bulk viscosity, the currently cosmic observations favor a smaller bulk viscosity coefficient.
