Exotic Fractional Topological States in Two-Dimensional Organometallic Material

Fractional Chern insulators (FCIs), having properties similar to those of the fractional quantum Hall effect, have been established numerically in various toy models. To fully explore their fundamental physics and to develop practical applications, material realization is indispensable. Here we theoretically predict a realization of FCI in a two-dimensional organometallic material, which is known to have the prerequisite topological at bands. Using numerical exact diagonalization we demonstrate that the presence of strong electronic correlations and fractional filling of such a system could lead to a rich phase diagram, including Abelian fractional quantum Hall (FQH), Fermi-liquid, and Wigner crystal states. In particular, the FQH state has been confirmed systematically by calculating the topological ground-state degeneracies, topological Chern number, and the quasihole excitation spectrum as well as the particle entanglement spectrum. Future experimental realization of the FQH state in such material may provide a route for developing practical applications of FCI with no need of the extreme conditions.

Featureless quantum spin liquid, 1/3-magnetization plateau state and exotic thermodynamic properties of spin-1/2 frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet on an infinite Husimi lattice

By utilizing tensor-network-based methods, we investigate the zero- and finite-temperature properties of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic (HAF) model on an infinite Husimi lattice that contains 3/2 sites per triangle. The ground state of this model is found to possess vanishing local magnetization and is featureless; the spin-spin and dimer-dimer correlation functions are verified to decay exponentially; and its ground-state energy per site is determined to be $e_0=-0.4343(1)$, which is very close to that [$e_0=-0.4386(5)$] of the intriguing kagome HAF model. The magnetization curve shows the absence of a zero-magnetization plateau, implying a gapless excitation. A $1/3$-magnetization plateau with spin up-up-down state is observed, which is selected and stabilized by quantum fluctuations. A ground state phase diagram under magnetic fields is presented. Moreover, both magnetic susceptibility and the specific heat are studied, whose low-temperature behaviors reinforce the conclusion that the HAF model on the infinite Husimi lattice owns a gapless and featureless spin liquid ground state.

A Novel Face Recognition Method using Nearest Line Projection

Face recognition is a popular application of pat- tern recognition methods, and it faces challenging problems including illumination, expression, and pose. The most popular way is to learn the subspaces of the face images so that it could be project to another discriminant space where images of different persons can be separated. In this paper, a nearest line projection algorithm is developed to represent the face images for face recognition. Instead of projecting an image to its nearest image, we try to project it to its nearest line spanned by two different face images. The subspaces are learned so that each face image to its nearest line is minimized. We evaluated the proposed algorithm on some benchmark face image database, and also compared it to some other image projection algorithms. The experiment results showed that the proposed algorithm outperforms other ones.

Exploiting Structure in Weighted Model Counting Approaches to Probabilistic Inference

Previous studies have demonstrated that encoding a Bayesian network into a SAT formula and then performing weighted model counting using a backtracking search algorithm can be an effective method for exact inference. In this paper, we present techniques for improving this approach for Bayesian networks with noisy-OR and noisy-MAX relations---two relations that are widely used in practice as they can dramatically reduce the number of probabilities one needs to specify. In particular, we present two SAT encodings for noisy-OR and two encodings for noisy-MAX that exploit the structure or semantics of the relations to improve both time and space efficiency, and we prove the correctness of the encodings. We experimentally evaluated our techniques on large-scale real and randomly generated Bayesian networks. On these benchmarks, our techniques gave speedups of up to two orders of magnitude over the best previous approaches for networks with noisy-OR/MAX relations and scaled up to larger networks. As well, our techniques extend the weighted model counting approach for exact inference to networks that were previously intractable for the approach.

Far-field super-resolution imaging with a planar hyperbolic metamaterial lens beyond the Fabry-Perot resonance condition

We demonstrate achieving the far-field super-resolution imaging can be realized by using a planar hyperbolic metamaterial lens (PHML), beyond the Fabry-Perot resonance condition. Although the thickness of the PHML is much larger than wavelength, the PHML not only can transmit radiative waves and evanescent waves with high transmission, but also can collect all the waves in the image region with the amplitudes of them being the same order of magnitude. We present a design for a PHML to realize the far-field super-resolution imaging, with the distance between the sources and the images 10 times larger than wavelength. We show the superresolution of our PHML is robust against losses, and the PHML can be fabricated by periodic stacking of metal and dielectric layers.

Identifying Symmetry-Protected Topological Order by Entanglement Entropy

According to the classification using projective representations of the SO(3) group, there exist two topologically distinct gapped phases in spin-1 chains. The symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase possesses half-integer projective representations of the SO(3) group, while the trivial phase possesses integer linear representations. In the present work, we implement non-Abelian symmetries in the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method, allowing us to keep track of (and also control) the virtual bond representations, and to readily distinguish the SPT phase from the trivial one by evaluating the multiplet entanglement spectrum. In particular, using the entropies $S^I$ ($S^H$) of integer (half-integer) representations, we can define an entanglement gap $G = S^I - S^H$, which equals 1 in the SPT phase, and $-1$ in the trivial phase. As application of our proposal, we study the spin-1 models on various 1D and quasi-1D lattices, including the bilinear-biquadratic model on the single chain, and the Heisenberg model on a two-leg ladder and a three-leg tube. Among others, we confirm the existence of an SPT phase in the spin-1 tube model, and reveal that the phase transition between the SPT and the trivial phase is a continuous one. The transition point is found to be critical, with conformal central charge $c=3$ determined by fits to the block entanglement entropy.

Pressure induced topological quantum phase transition in Sb_2Se_3

Based on the first-principles band structure calculations, we investigate the effects of hydrostatic pressure on the conventional insulator (CI) Sb_2Se_3 and predict that it undergoes a topological quantum phase transition from a CI to a nontrivial topological insulator at a critical pressure value. The pressure-induced topological quantum phase transition is confirmed by calculating the evolution of the bulk energy gap as a function of pressure, the inversion of energy band structure, and the Z_2 topological invariant, as well as the existence of the Dirac-like topological surface states. Our predictions can be tested by both spectroscopy and transport experiments.

Modular Properties of 3D Higher Spin Theory

In the three-dimensional sl(N) Chern-Simons higher-spin theory, we prove that the conical surplus and the black hole solution are related by the S-transformation of the modulus of the boundary torus. Then applying the modular group on a given conical surplus solution, we generate a 'SL(2,Z)' family of smooth constant solutions. We then show how these solutions are mapped into one another by coordinate transformations that act non-trivially on the homology of the boundary torus. After deriving a thermodynamics that applies to all the solutions in the 'SL(2,Z)' family, we compute their entropies and free energies, and determine how the latter transform under the modular transformations. Summing over all the modular images of the conical surplus, we write down a (tree-level) modular invariant partition function.

Mechanics of Tunable Helices and Geometric Frustration in Biomimetic Seashells

Helical structures are ubiquitous in nature and engineering, ranging from DNA molecules to plant tendrils, from sea snail shells to nanoribbons. While the helical shapes in natural and engineered systems often exhibit nearly uniform radius and pitch, helical shell structures with changing radius and pitch, such as seashells and some plant tendrils, adds to the variety of this family of aesthetic beauty. Here we develop a comprehensive theoretical framework for tunable helical morphologies, and report the first biomimetic seashell-like structure resulting from mechanics of geometric frustration. In previous studies, the total potential energy is everywhere minimized when the system achieves equilibrium. In this work, however, the local energy minimization cannot be realized because of the geometric incompatibility, and hence the whole system deforms into a shape with a global energy minimum whereby the energy in each segment may not necessarily be locally optimized. This novel approach can be applied to develop materials and devices of tunable geometries with a range of applications in nano/biotechnology.

First Principles Study of the Magnetic Properties of LaOMnAs

Recent experiments reported giant magnetoresistance at room temperature in LaOMnAs. Here a density functional theory calculation is performed to investigate magnetic properties of LaOMnAs. The ground state is found to be the G-type antiferromagnetic order within the $ab$ plane but coupled ferromagnetically between planes, in agreement with recent neutron investigations. The electronic band structures suggest an insulating state which is driven by the particular G-type magnetic order, while a metallic state accompanies the ferromagnetic order. This relation between magnetism and conductance may be helpful to qualitatively understand the giant magnetoresistance effects.

Perturbations of W(infinity) CFTs

The holographic duals of higher spin theories on AdS_3 are described by the large N limit of a family of minimal model CFTs, whose symmetry algebra is equivalent to W(infinity)[lambda]. We study perturbations of these limit theories, and show that they possess a marginal symmetry-preserving perturbation that describes switching on the 1/N corrections. We also test our general results for the specific cases of lambda=0,1, where free field realisations are available.

Sparse Difference Resultant

In this paper, the concept of sparse difference resultant for a Laurent transformally essential system of difference polynomials is introduced and a simple criterion for the existence of sparse difference resultant is given. The concept of transformally homogenous polynomial is introduced and the sparse difference resultant is shown to be transformally homogenous. It is shown that the vanishing of the sparse difference resultant gives a necessary condition for the corresponding difference polynomial system to have non-zero solutions. The order and degree bounds for sparse difference resultant are given. Based on these bounds, an algorithm to compute the sparse difference resultant is proposed, which is single exponential in terms of the number of variables, the Jacobi number, and the size of the Laurent transformally essential system. Furthermore, the precise order and degree, a determinant representation, and a Poisson-type product formula for the difference resultant are given.

Direct Optical Coupling to an Unoccupied Dirac Surface State in the Topological Insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$

We characterize the occupied and unoccupied electronic structure of the topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$ by one-photon and two-photon angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and slab band structure calculations. We reveal a second, unoccupied Dirac surface state with similar electronic structure and physical origin to the well-known topological surface state. This state is energetically located 1.5 eV above the conduction band, which permits it to be directly excited by the output of a Ti:Sapphire laser. This discovery demonstrates the feasibility of direct ultrafast optical coupling to a topologically protected, spin-textured surface state.

Difference Chow Form

In this paper, the generic intersection theory for difference varieties is presented. Precisely, the intersection of an irreducible difference variety of dimension $d > 0$ and order $h$ with a generic difference hypersurface of order $s$ is shown to be an irreducible difference variety of dimension $d-1$ and order $h+s$. Based on the intersection theory, the difference Chow form for an irreducible difference variety is defined. Furthermore, it is shown that the difference Chow form of an irreducible difference variety $V$ is transformally homogenous and has the same order as $V$.

Graphene as Transparent Electrode for Direct Observation of Hole Photoemission from Silicon to Oxide

The outstanding electrical and optical properties of graphene make it an excellent alternative as a transparent electrode. Here we demonstrate the application of graphene as collector material in internal photoemission (IPE) spectroscopy; enabling the direct observation of both electron and hole injections at a Si/Al2O3 interface and successfully overcoming the long-standing difficulty of detecting holes injected from a semiconductor emitter in IPE measurements. The observed electron and hole barrier heights are 3.5 eV and 4.1 eV, respectively. Thus the bandgap of Al2O3 can be further deduced to be 6.5 eV, in close agreement with the valued obtained by vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopic ellipsometry analysis. The detailed optical modeling of a graphene/Al2O3/Si stack reveals that by using graphene in IPE measurements the carrier injection from the emitter is significantly enhanced and the contribution of carrier injection from the collector electrode is minimal. The method can be readily extended to various IPE test structures for a complete band alignment analysis and interface characterization.

Honeycomb Heisenberg Spin Ladder: Unusual Ground State and Thermodynamic Properties

The unusual ground state and thermodynamic properties of spin-1/2 two-leg honeycomb (HC) spin ladder are systematically studied by jointly utilizing various analytical and numerical methods. The HC spin ladder is found to exhibit behaviors dramatically different from those of the conventional square spin ladder. A strong relevant term nJ and a half saturation magnetization plateau that can be attributed to the formation of diluted dimer states are observed in the HC ladder, both of which are absent in the square ladder. The ground state phase diagram of the HC spin ladder is identified, and the thermodynamic properties of the specific heat and susceptibility for different couplings are thoroughly explored, where two kinds of excitations are unveiled. The distinct Wilson ratios for both spin ladders at the lower critical fields are also obtained. Our calculated result is well fitted to the experimental data of the two-leg HC spin ladder compound [Cu2L1(N3)4]n.

Enhanced Hot-Carrier Luminescence in Multilayer Reduced Graphene Oxide Nanospheres

We report a method to promote photoluminescence emission in graphene materials by enhancing carrier scattering instead of directly modifying band structure in multilayer reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanospheres. We intentionally curl graphene layers to form nanospheres by reducing graphene oxide with spherical polymer templates to manipulate the carrier scattering. These nanospheres produce hot-carrier luminescence with more than ten-fold improvement of emission efficiency as compared to planar nanosheets. With increasing excitation power, hot-carrier luminescence from nanospheres exhibits abnormal spectral redshift with dynamic feature associated to the strengthened electron-phonon coupling. These experimental results can be well understood by considering the screened Coulomb interactions. With increasing carrier density, the reduced screening effect promotes carrier scattering which enhances hot-carrier emission from such multilayer rGO nanospheres. This carrier-scattering scenario is further confirmed by pump-probe measurements.

Orbital-Selective Mottness in KxFe2-ySe2 Superconductors Revealed by Pump-Probe Spectroscopy

We report transient optical signatures of the orbital-selective Mottness in superconducting KxFe2-ySe2 crystals by using dual-color pump-probe spectroscopy. Besides multi-exponential decay recovery dynamics of photo-induced quasiparticles, a damped oscillatory component due to coherent acoustic phonons emerges when the superconducting phase is suppressed by increasing the temperature or excitation power. The oscillatory component diminishes with significant enhancement of a slow decay component upon raising temperature to 150-160 K. These results are in consistence with the picture of orbital-selective Mott phase transition, indicating a vital role played by electron correlation in the iron-based superconductors.
