STICKERCONV: Generating Multimodal Empathetic Responses from Scratch

Stickers, while widely recognized for enhancing empathetic communication in online interactions, remain underexplored in current empathetic dialogue research, notably due to the challenge of a lack of comprehensive datasets. In this paper, we introduce the Agent for STICKERCONV (Agent4SC), which uses collaborative agent interactions to realistically simulate human behavior with sticker usage, thereby enhancing multimodal empathetic communication. Building on this foundation, we develop a multimodal empathetic dialogue dataset, STICKERCONV, comprising 12.9K dialogue sessions, 5.8K unique stickers, and 2K diverse conversational scenarios. This dataset serves as a benchmark for multimodal empathetic generation. To advance further, we propose PErceive and Generate Stickers (PEGS), a multimodal empathetic response generation framework, complemented by a comprehensive set of empathy evaluation metrics based on LLM. Our experiments demonstrate PEGS's effectiveness in generating contextually relevant and emotionally resonant multimodal empathetic responses, contributing to the advancement of more nuanced and engaging empathetic dialogue systems.

AI Empowered Channel Semantic Acquisition for 6G Integrated Sensing and Communication Networks

Motivated by the need for increased spectral efficiency and the proliferation of intelligent applications, the sixth-generation (6G) mobile network is anticipated to integrate the dual-functions of communication and sensing (C&S). Although the millimeter wave (mmWave) communication and mmWave radar share similar multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) architecture for integration, the full potential of dual-function synergy remains to be exploited. In this paper, we commence by overviewing state-of-the-art schemes from the aspects of waveform design and signal processing. Nevertheless, these approaches face the dilemma of mutual compromise between C&S performance. To this end, we reveal and exploit the synergy between C&S. In the proposed framework, we introduce a two-stage frame structure and resort artificial intelligence (AI) to achieve the synergistic gain by designing a joint C&S channel semantic extraction and reconstruction network (JCASCasterNet). With just a cost-effective and energy-efficient single sensing antenna, the proposed scheme achieves enhanced overall performance while requiring only limited pilot and feedback signaling overhead. In the end, we outline the challenges that lie ahead in the future development of integrated sensing and communication networks, along with promising directions for further research.

InRank: Incremental Low-Rank Learning

The theory of greedy low-rank learning (GLRL) aims to explain the impressive generalization capabilities of deep learning. It proves that stochastic gradient-based training implicitly regularizes neural networks towards low-rank solutions through a gradual increase of the rank during training. However, there is a gap between theory and practice since GLRL requires an infinitesimal initialization of the weights, which is not practical due to the fact that it is a saddle point. In this work, we remove the assumption of infinitesimal initialization by focusing on cumulative weight updates. We prove the cumulative weight updates follow an incremental low-rank trajectory for arbitrary orthogonal initialization of weights in a three-layer linear network. Empirically, we demonstrate that our theory holds on a broad range of neural networks (e.g., transformers) and standard training algorithms (e.g., SGD, Adam). However, existing training algorithms do not exploit the low-rank property to improve computational efficiency as the networks are not parameterized in low-rank. To remedy this, we design a new training algorithm Incremental Low-Rank Learning (InRank), which explicitly expresses cumulative weight updates as low-rank matrices while incrementally augmenting their ranks during training. We evaluate InRank on GPT-2, and our results indicate that InRank achieves comparable prediction performance as the full-rank counterpart while requiring at most 33% of the total ranks throughout training. We also propose an efficient version of InRank that achieves a reduction of 37% in total training time and 36% in model size when training GPT-medium on WikiText-103 from scratch.

Electrically reconfigurable phase-change transmissive metasurface

Programmable and reconfigurable optics hold significant potential for transforming a broad spectrum of applications, spanning space explorations to biomedical imaging, gas sensing, and optical cloaking. The ability to adjust the optical properties of components like filters, lenses, and beam steering devices could result in dramatic reductions in size, weight, and power consumption in future optoelectronic devices. Among the potential candidates for reconfigurable optics, chalcogenide-based phase change materials (PCMs) offer great promise due to their non-volatile and analogue switching characteristics. Although PCM have found widespread use in electronic data storage, these memory devices are deeply sub-micron-sized. To incorporate phase change materials into free-space optical components, it is essential to scale them up to beyond several hundreds of microns while maintaining reliable switching characteristics. This study demonstrated a non-mechanical, non-volatile transmissive filter based on low-loss PCMs with a 200 $μ$m$ \times $200 $μ$m switching area. The device/metafilter can be consistently switched between low- and high-transmission states using electrical pulses with a switching contrast ratio of 5.5 dB. The device was reversibly switched for 1250 cycles before accelerated degradation took place. The work represents an important step toward realizing free-space reconfigurable optics based on PCMs.

Insight-HXMT on-orbit thermal control status and thermal deformation impact analysis

Purpose: The Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope is China's first X-ray astronomy satellite launched on June 15th, 2017, dubbed Insight-HXMT. Active and passive thermal control measures are employed to keep devices at suitable temperatures. In this paper, we analyzed the on-orbit thermal monitoring data of the first 5 years and investigated the effect of thermal deformation on the point spread function (PSF) of the telescopes. Methods: We examined the data of the on-orbit temperatures measured using 157 thermistors placed on the collimators, detectors and their support structures and compared the results with the thermal control requirements. The thermal deformation was evaluated by the relative orientation of the two star sensors installed on the main support structure. its effect was estimated with evolution of the PSF obtained with calibration scanning observations of the Crab nebula. Conclusion: The on-orbit temperatures met the thermal control requirements thus far, and the effect of thermal deformation on the PSF was negligible after the on-orbit pointing calibration.

Study of charm hadronization and in-medium modification at the Electron-ion Collider in China

Charm quark production and its hadronization in ep and eA collisions at the future Electron-Ion Collider in China (EicC) will help us understand the quark/gluon fragmentation processes and the hadronization mechanisms in the nuclear medium, especially within a poorly constrained kinematic region ($x<0.1$). In this paper, we report a study on the production of charmed hadrons, $D^0$ and $Λ_c^+$, reconstructed with a dedicated GEANT4 simulation of vertex$\,\&\,$tracking detectors designed for EicC. The $Λ_c^+$/$D^0$ ratios as functions of multiplicity and $p_T$, as well as the $D^0$ double ratio are presented with projected statistical precision.

MM-BigBench: Evaluating Multimodal Models on Multimodal Content Comprehension Tasks

The popularity of multimodal large language models (MLLMs) has triggered a recent surge in research efforts dedicated to evaluating these models. Nevertheless, existing evaluation studies of MLLMs primarily focus on the comprehension and reasoning of unimodal (vision) content, neglecting performance evaluations in the domain of multimodal (vision-language) content understanding. Beyond multimodal reasoning, tasks related to multimodal content comprehension necessitate a profound understanding of multimodal contexts, achieved through the multimodal interaction to obtain a final answer. In this paper, we introduce a comprehensive assessment framework called MM-BigBench, which incorporates a diverse range of metrics to offer an extensive evaluation of the performance of various models and instructions across a wide spectrum of diverse multimodal content comprehension tasks. Consequently, our work complements research on the performance of MLLMs in multimodal comprehension tasks, achieving a more comprehensive and holistic evaluation of MLLMs. To begin, we employ the Best Performance metric to ascertain each model's performance upper bound on different datasets. Subsequently, the Mean Relative Gain metric offers an assessment of the overall performance of various models and instructions, while the Stability metric measures their sensitivity. Furthermore, previous research centers on evaluating models independently or solely assessing instructions, neglecting the adaptability between models and instructions. We propose the Adaptability metric to quantify the adaptability between models and instructions. Our paper evaluates a total of 20 language models (14 MLLMs) on 14 multimodal datasets spanning 6 tasks, with 10 instructions for each task, and derives novel insights. Our code will be released at https://github.com/declare-lab/MM-BigBench.

Controllable Data Generation Via Iterative Data-Property Mutual Mappings

Deep generative models have been widely used for their ability to generate realistic data samples in various areas, such as images, molecules, text, and speech. One major goal of data generation is controllability, namely to generate new data with desired properties. Despite growing interest in the area of controllable generation, significant challenges still remain, including 1) disentangling desired properties with unrelated latent variables, 2) out-of-distribution property control, and 3) objective optimization for out-of-distribution property control. To address these challenges, in this paper, we propose a general framework to enhance VAE-based data generators with property controllability and ensure disentanglement. Our proposed objective can be optimized on both data seen and unseen in the training set. We propose a training procedure to train the objective in a semi-supervised manner by iteratively conducting mutual mappings between the data and properties. The proposed framework is implemented on four VAE-based controllable generators to evaluate its performance on property error, disentanglement, generation quality, and training time. The results indicate that our proposed framework enables more precise control over the properties of generated samples in a short training time, ensuring the disentanglement and keeping the validity of the generated samples.

SurroCBM: Concept Bottleneck Surrogate Models for Generative Post-hoc Explanation

Explainable AI seeks to bring light to the decision-making processes of black-box models. Traditional saliency-based methods, while highlighting influential data segments, often lack semantic understanding. Recent advancements, such as Concept Activation Vectors (CAVs) and Concept Bottleneck Models (CBMs), offer concept-based explanations but necessitate human-defined concepts. However, human-annotated concepts are expensive to attain. This paper introduces the Concept Bottleneck Surrogate Models (SurroCBM), a novel framework that aims to explain the black-box models with automatically discovered concepts. SurroCBM identifies shared and unique concepts across various black-box models and employs an explainable surrogate model for post-hoc explanations. An effective training strategy using self-generated data is proposed to enhance explanation quality continuously. Through extensive experiments, we demonstrate the efficacy of SurroCBM in concept discovery and explanation, underscoring its potential in advancing the field of explainable AI.

Saliency-Guided Hidden Associative Replay for Continual Learning

Continual Learning is a burgeoning domain in next-generation AI, focusing on training neural networks over a sequence of tasks akin to human learning. While CL provides an edge over traditional supervised learning, its central challenge remains to counteract catastrophic forgetting and ensure the retention of prior tasks during subsequent learning. Amongst various strategies to tackle this, replay based methods have emerged as preeminent, echoing biological memory mechanisms. However, these methods are memory intensive, often preserving entire data samples, an approach inconsistent with humans selective memory retention of salient experiences. While some recent works have explored the storage of only significant portions of data in episodic memory, the inherent nature of partial data necessitates innovative retrieval mechanisms. Current solutions, like inpainting, approximate full data reconstruction from partial cues, a method that diverges from genuine human memory processes. Addressing these nuances, this paper presents the Saliency Guided Hidden Associative Replay for Continual Learning. This novel framework synergizes associative memory with replay-based strategies. SHARC primarily archives salient data segments via sparse memory encoding. Importantly, by harnessing associative memory paradigms, it introduces a content focused memory retrieval mechanism, promising swift and near-perfect recall, bringing CL a step closer to authentic human memory processes. Extensive experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method for various continual learning tasks.

Multi-Prompt Fine-Tuning of Foundation Models for Enhanced Medical Image Segmentation

The Segment Anything Model (SAM) is a powerful foundation model that introduced revolutionary advancements in natural image segmentation. However, its performance remains sub-optimal when delineating the intricate structure of biomedical images, where multiple organs and tissues intertwine in a single image. In this study, we introduce a novel fine-tuning framework that leverages SAM's ability to bundle and process multiple prompts per image and seeks to improve SAM's performance in medical images. We first curated a medical image dataset that consists of CT scans of lesions in various organs, each with two annotations for organs and lesions respectively. Then, we fine-tuned SAM's mask decoder within our framework by batching both bounding boxes generated from ground truth masks as reference. The batched prompt strategy we introduced not only addresses the inherent complexity and ambiguity often found in medical images but also substantially enhances performance metrics when applied onto a wide range of segmentation tasks.

Rationality and connectivity in stochastic learning for networked coordination games

Coordination is a desirable feature in many multi-agent systems such as robotic and socioeconomic networks. We consider a task allocation problem as a binary networked coordination game over an undirected regular graph. Each agent in the graph has bounded rationality, and uses a distributed stochastic learning algorithm to update its action choice conditioned on the actions currently played by its neighbors. After establishing that our framework leads to a potential game, we analyze the regime of bounded rationality, where the agents are allowed to make sub-optimal decisions with some probability. Our analysis shows that there is a relationship between the connectivity of the network, and the rationality of the agents. In particular, we show that in some scenarios, an agent can afford to be less rational and still converge to a near optimal collective strategy, provided that its connectivity degree increases. Such phenomenon is akin to the wisdom of crowds.

Large Language Models Are Also Good Prototypical Commonsense Reasoners

Commonsense reasoning is a pivotal skill for large language models, yet it presents persistent challenges in specific tasks requiring this competence. Traditional fine-tuning approaches can be resource-intensive and potentially compromise a model's generalization capacity. Furthermore, state-of-the-art language models like GPT-3.5 and Claude are primarily accessible through API calls, which makes fine-tuning models challenging. To address these challenges, we draw inspiration from the outputs of large models for tailored tasks and semi-automatically developed a set of novel prompts from several perspectives, including task-relevance, supportive evidence generation (e.g. chain-of-thought and knowledge), diverse path decoding to aid the model. Experimental results on ProtoQA dataset demonstrate that with better designed prompts we can achieve the new state-of-art(SOTA) on the ProtoQA leaderboard, improving the Max Answer@1 score by 8%, Max Incorrect@1 score by 4% (breakthrough 50% for the first time) compared to the previous SOTA model and achieved an improvement on StrategyQA and CommonsenseQA2.0 (3% and 1%, respectively). Furthermore, with the generated Chain-of-Thought and knowledge, we can improve the interpretability of the model while also surpassing the previous SOTA models. We hope that our work can provide insight for the NLP community to develop better prompts and explore the potential of large language models for more complex reasoning tasks.

However, in situ characterization of their phase transition characteristics is a capability that remains inaccessible to many researchers. In this article, we introduce a multi-functional silicon microheater platform capable of in situ measurement of structural, kinetic, optical, and thermal properties of these materials. The platform can be fabricated leveraging industry-standard silicon foundry manufacturing processes. We fully open-sourced this platform, including complete hardware design and associated software codes.

Cones 2: Customizable Image Synthesis with Multiple Subjects

Synthesizing images with user-specified subjects has received growing attention due to its practical applications. Despite the recent success in single subject customization, existing algorithms suffer from high training cost and low success rate along with increased number of subjects. Towards controllable image synthesis with multiple subjects as the constraints, this work studies how to efficiently represent a particular subject as well as how to appropriately compose different subjects. We find that the text embedding regarding the subject token already serves as a simple yet effective representation that supports arbitrary combinations without any model tuning. Through learning a residual on top of the base embedding, we manage to robustly shift the raw subject to the customized subject given various text conditions. We then propose to employ layout, a very abstract and easy-to-obtain prior, as the spatial guidance for subject arrangement. By rectifying the activations in the cross-attention map, the layout appoints and separates the location of different subjects in the image, significantly alleviating the interference across them. Both qualitative and quantitative experimental results demonstrate our superiority over state-of-the-art alternatives under a variety of settings for multi-subject customization.

Few-shot Joint Multimodal Aspect-Sentiment Analysis Based on Generative Multimodal Prompt

We have witnessed the rapid proliferation of multimodal data on numerous social media platforms. Conventional studies typically require massive labeled data to train models for Multimodal Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis (MABSA). However, collecting and annotating fine-grained multimodal data for MABSA is tough. To alleviate the above issue, we perform three MABSA-related tasks with quite a small number of labeled multimodal samples. We first build diverse and comprehensive multimodal few-shot datasets according to the data distribution. To capture the specific prompt for each aspect term in a few-shot scenario, we propose a novel Generative Multimodal Prompt (GMP) model for MABSA, which includes the Multimodal Encoder module and the N-Stream Decoders module. We further introduce a subtask to predict the number of aspect terms in each instance to construct the multimodal prompt. Extensive experiments on two datasets demonstrate that our approach outperforms strong baselines on two MABSA-related tasks in the few-shot setting.

PVGRU: Generating Diverse and Relevant Dialogue Responses via Pseudo-Variational Mechanism

We investigate response generation for multi-turn dialogue in generative-based chatbots. Existing generative models based on RNNs (Recurrent Neural Networks) usually employ the last hidden state to summarize the sequences, which makes models unable to capture the subtle variability observed in different dialogues and cannot distinguish the differences between dialogues that are similar in composition. In this paper, we propose a Pseudo-Variational Gated Recurrent Unit (PVGRU) component without posterior knowledge through introducing a recurrent summarizing variable into the GRU, which can aggregate the accumulated distribution variations of subsequences. PVGRU can perceive the subtle semantic variability through summarizing variables that are optimized by the devised distribution consistency and reconstruction objectives. In addition, we build a Pseudo-Variational Hierarchical Dialogue (PVHD) model based on PVGRU. Experimental results demonstrate that PVGRU can broadly improve the diversity and relevance of responses on two benchmark datasets.

WSFE: Wasserstein Sub-graph Feature Encoder for Effective User Segmentation in Collaborative Filtering

Maximizing the user-item engagement based on vectorized embeddings is a standard procedure of recent recommender models. Despite the superior performance for item recommendations, these methods however implicitly deprioritize the modeling of user-wise similarity in the embedding space; consequently, identifying similar users is underperforming, and additional processing schemes are usually required otherwise. To avoid thorough model re-training, we propose WSFE, a model-agnostic and training-free representation encoder, to be flexibly employed on the fly for effective user segmentation. Underpinned by the optimal transport theory, the encoded representations from WSFE present a matched user-wise similarity/distance measurement between the realistic and embedding space. We incorporate WSFE into six state-of-the-art recommender models and conduct extensive experiments on six real-world datasets. The empirical analyses well demonstrate the superiority and generality of WSFE to fuel multiple downstream tasks with diverse underlying targets in recommendation.
